Dismounting from William he moves forward.

"Welcome to Oleg's trading post. We had a slight bandit problem that we are working on, and we did request some guards to watch over them. We have done a small amount of exploration, but intend to get more of it done now that some guards have arrived."

"God save you!" Nalys put away his bow and walked down to greet newcomers.

"Stay!" he commanded to Seara, who was looking angry around and big bird took it's place behind a prisoners shed.

"My name is Nalys Stern and I am as well part of this exploration chapter group. We got lots of news to share, but I am not very talkative person. My storyteller skills are really mediocre.", he was staying behind Calum's back, awaiting that anything might happen.
"I will check for Oleg, he is moving slowly due to his knee injury"

The mailed and helmed soldier dismounts and looks at each of you. He gives what Calum intuits to be a somewhat resigned sigh, then begins shaking hands. "Well, so you are here, then. Good. That will save this from taking long to get to you."He pulls forth a scroll case from a saddlebag and hands it over to the nearest member of your group. "The Lord Mayor, after further... consultation with the noble houses, has refined the terms of your charter to be more in line with the reality of these lands and Brevic interests. You can read it at your leisure, but my understanding is that you are to limit their exploration to an area no further than 24 miles east of Oleg's and no further than 48 miles west and south of Oleg's. How the clerks manage to mess up intelligence from simple hunters is beyond me."

When he sees Oleg, he gives another small sigh and walks past you to greet him. "Oleg Leveton, then? I am Kesten Garess, here by the grace of the Lord Mayor of Restov in response to your plea for aid for a period of two months. At the end of that time, I shall make a report to Restov on the need for further guard presence at your trading post.

When he says his name, those of you with Knowledge(Nobility) can make a check - Garess is one of the main houses.

The soldier gives the fort a practiced eye. [b]"Hmm, defensible, certainly, but with need for a greater force to help defend it. I trust that you will permit us to set up an encampment here within your walls so that we may adequately keep ourselves out of the way of your business, and that my steed can find lodging in your stable? The Lord Mayor has disbursed these funds to offset the cost of our presence, which includes these needs, as well as food. You should find it sufficient."

Oleg bristles a bit at the soldier's initial manners, but turns more businesslike when the pouch of money comes forward. "Yes, we can see to you. Svetlana, five more for dinner. Best add more to the stew." He shows them where they can pitch tents on the south side of the stable, next to the outer wall, and leads the horse inside to try and find room for it in the already crowded stables.

Kesten turns back to you. "So, you say you have encountered these bandits? Do you think them a threat worthy of our presence?"

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger 1, Hp 13/13; Fort: +5, Reflex +4 Will +1; AC 17,

Easing now that Kesten has introduced himself and presented some credentials, "Aye lad, we dealt with the few what tried to rough up Oleg and Svetlana, but we didno want to leave them alone long enough to go strike at these bandits ourselves."

Considering somewhat carefully, "You lads will be a grand help to us here, and givin' us some backup if needed. Now we can take the fight to them and make them tremble in their sin." Brandt adds quickly.

Hmm, the Garess family. What did mother always say about them? This Keston fellow certainly seems to think he is important...better be polite, Isla.

Knowledge (Nobility): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 Isla would pay extra attention to whether the Garess family has any particular relationship with the Orlovsky family

"Pleasure to meet you." Isla says with instinctual formality and an awkward curtsy. "..and yes...your assistance would be of great help. Although we were able defeat a few bandits, it has been difficult for us to fulfill our charter, while also guarding this post. However, as Brandt has suggested, we could work towards entirely removing the bandit threat...if we were not as tied down."

Isla:
The Garess family is known for it's holdings in the Golushkin mountains, and their long historical ties to the dwarves that - until the Vanishing - lived in that mountain range. Your house - Orlovsky - has a citadel atop Mount Veshka from which one could survey a good portion of the Garess lands. While your house has yet to fully support house Surtova's bid for the dragonscale throne (a delicate dance that Lord Poul Orlovsky has been maintaining for over a decade), House Garess did support the Surtova's. There's never love lost between these fractious groups, but your house's claim to be "High Above" (their motto) the conflicts of a given day has kept them mostly neutral with the other houses.
As to Kesten himself, you have a stirring that there might be something there, but you aren't sure.

Ah, yes...the Garess family...the reason why I had to study Dwarven for two years. Can't seem to recall what was special about Keston Garess, though...

"So, what say you, mi lord?" Isla asks Keston, " Are you willing to aid us in this task?"

'Worthy of our presence...' we may have to find a new base if his head takes up all the space between the walls here. Seeing Isla take the lead, Geliglee bites his tongue as the arrogant noble pratters on.

Kesten nods slowly. "Yes, I am sworn to aid, and our being here will certainly free you to pursue your charter. Though let me be clear - my orders are to defend this post, and that does not include accompanying you on raids against bandit encampments or strongholds. That you must accomplish on your own. If you would do so at this time, then I urge you to go forth and accomplish what you can quickly, then return to tell me what further threats against Restov might be in these woods, so that I may make a full report. Is there any intelligence you have at this time that you will make use of, or are you going to blindly wander through the wilderness?"

Of course we aren't just going to blindly wander, you... Isla exhales a little. Calm down. It's one thing to let the gnome rile you up...but a noble like this? His ego is likely a fragile thing...and unfortunately we do need his help..."

"We do not expect you to travel with us. Only that you will be able to secure the post, protect the Levetons and manage the prisoners."

"As for intelligence, we know that there is a small bandit camp, run by a notoriously cruel woman named Kressle. She fights with two axes. The camp is directly south of here, a little more than a normal day's ride. It can be found by following along the forest, turning west when you reach the river and following it a mile upstream. The number of men at the camp varies, but is usually between six and twelve.

Also, Kressle's boss, a man who uses a silver stag symbol and seems to be coordinating banditry in the area, runs a camp about sixty miles from here, near Lake Tuskwater."

Doing her best maintain a polite smile and a non-sarcastic tone, she adds, "Do you have any other concerns, Lord Garess?"

This name seems unfamiliar to me. Maybe he's a major noble and not a member of the lesser houses that I am, was, accustomed to meeting.

Calum masks his lack of knowledge with a friendly smile, but trying not to be so informal as to cause an issue.

"Many thanks good sir. We have done some exploration but feared for the safety of Oleg and his wife. Now my mind can rest easy while out and about. I owe you a debt of gratitude."

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger 1, Hp 13/13; Fort: +5, Reflex +4 Will +1; AC 17,

Brandt, used to the byplay between members of noble families watches his friends attempt to deflect and manage Kesten Garess. Seemingly unsurprised at anything being said, he nods as Isla and Calum speak, unstringing his bow and going back to the maintenance on the wall.

Kesten gives Isla a cross look, but says, "No, that will be adequate."

He turns to Calum, claps a hand in as jovial of a manner as he is able, and says, "Yes, rider, you do. I trust you'll be leaving at first light for this camp of their? I'm sure that my men and I can oversee the completion of your defenses here, if you will but leave us the plans to do so with Oleg. We'll begin our watch rotation following the evening meal." With that, he heads over to give orders to his men to set up tents on the south and west sides of the stable.

Oleg grunts and heads back to his house, peering inside the sack of coins as he goes. He shakes his head, and mumbles a bit...

Perception (DC 15):
"Left Restov to get away from nobles like that one. Guess we didn't go far enough."

At this point, Sven peeks his head out of the door of the storage shed, then waves one of you over to ask, "What's happened, then?"

Nalys heard Kesten words, when he passed along, but made best effort not to disclosure that.

As he saw Sven picking, he walked back to barn:
"The guards from Restov arrived. They look competent and are pretty much sure to continue without our help. I think, it's time for us to leave and find others, who are willing to abandon banditry, but afraid to do that. From tomorrow, you will be under their protection and they will directly manage work you do. But now, we can return back to work."

After that, Nalys returned to his friends and gently touched Ilsa's elbow: "Kesten had some problems with nobles before. He left Restov because of that. Let's leave him be here for a moment and speak next time, we'll return. Might be he will be in better mood."

To shake away, Nalys took his hammer and moved up to continue working, while dinner is not served. Seara was making spiral flights around Oleg's to checkout for approaching people. Evening returned back to usual, except the population in that small fort grew by third in a moment.

Having listened for a while, Geliglee steps up, "At this point you should we captured three brigands who surrendered to us after we killed their leader. They have repented their brigandry and have been set to labor improving the defenses of this post as an initial sentence, so we spared them execution under the terms of our Charters. They also provided us with the intelligence that was just spoken of as good faith of their repentance.

I'm sure they would be willing to help you set your camp and other tasks as well, two have taken well to their new roles - though the one needs a little more watching..."

Oblivious to Oleg's words, she turns to the rest of the group and remarks, "I suppose we should prepare to leave first thing tomorrow. I have enough rations for ten days, because I'm not particularly good at hunting or scavenging. How about the rest of you?"

Kesten looks back at Geliglee with a flat, stern expression on his face. After a moment, he says, "So, you have brokered a deal with them? Then I will honor it - for now. Yet they may be of use to me, too."

He goes over to the shed and calls the three captives out to the yard. He looks them over, clearly hoping to see a face that isn't among them. "Tell me, criminals: where is Falgrim Sneeg? He is likely among your company, and he must meet justice. Answer me!"

The three captives clearly look worried that this man will strike out at them, but each replies,
- Happs: "Never heard of him."
- Sven: "Not part of our camp."
- Mielo: "No, no, not one of ours. Kressle would know, but she'd kill you before you can ask!"

Sense Motive (DC 20):

"Sir Kesten, those men where just a low brigands, why would they know anything about Falgrim? They were involved into banditry because due to lack of law in this lands. As now, we are here, you are here, and they are honestly working their way back to normal life."

Nalys made a pause and continued, trying to involve this unpleasant man into talking and make him leave prisoners be for a moment at least.

"On the other hand, we would like to know more about him. We are taking exploration seriously and if he is another bandit, who is a threat to a region, we should be informed. Might be this is a real name of their bandit king, the one who issues a stag-headed amulets? Why are you searching for him?"

Kesten turns back to face the rest of you. "Falgrim Sneeg is a traitor - one who threw aside his companions in their hour of need to save his own hide. He is out here, and yes, perhaps you might find him. My allies and I in Restov have a reward out for his capture - weapons of the finest crafting, made by Algus of Dorn, a smith reknown for his prowess across Restov. Bring him to me alive for me to mete out justice, and five of these weapons are yours. That man deserves punishment before the end. I do not believe him capable of organizing banditry across the region, but nothing should be ruled out."

Kesten's Description of Falgrim:
"He's a swarthy Varisian, quick of hand and dagger as any I met. He would be older now, into his middling years, and has likely lost a step, but not the quickness of his wit. You'll know him from his dark hair - though now likely greying - and dark eyes. He is of a rather exotic look."

"If he does not survive our attempt to capture him, is there still a reward?"

After the man released his hand, Calum smiled and headed back to the stables. Grabbing a brush from the wall he began to brush William to ensure that the horse was ready for going out.

"Looks like we'll have to pack up as we are heading out tomorrow William. It's going to be less stable time from here on out buddy. Ready for an adventure?"

Calum spent some time preparing his horse and thinking about which direction they should head. While heading south to the bandit camp would bring them directly to the bandits encampment he was pretty sure that the group should head west.

Ready for the morning, and will suggest West. I've got some food rations but if need be we can always hunt for food.

"Now that we've got enough help to manage 'ere, I suppose we should directly go after the bandit camp? Brandt asks the group that evening.

"Also I'd suppose either Nalys or meself should run point and the other hunt, but I'm amenable to any role what's needed. I suppose we should plan on five days away if the bandit camp is where we're headed. One to two to get there, one there, and one to two back. Those are my thoughts, the rest of you?" Thinking for a moment about roles, Isla remarks, "I don't really know anything about hunting or navigating...but I can stay in the back and watch for trouble...or do some mapping if Geliglee needs a break. Perhaps we should have Nayls hunt and Calum lead up the front? Brandt could swing between roles, perhaps working with Nayls to build up initial food supplies, then assisting Calum later when we are close to bandit territory?"

Geliglee takes some time to chat with Oleg about what he might recommend Geliglee purchase with his credit to make the trip a little easier on him.

To the group he suggest they might want to expand their thoughts on group-purchases as well: "Should we see about taking a pack-animal with us to carry food and supplies? If we are going on a longer excursion it might make sense, plus we may find some items along the way worth bringing back. We might even be able to bring tents along then, making the trip a little easier on us all."

Oleg grunts. "What'll keep you warm at night? You have a tent to share, or just counting on your blankets? Maybe an axe to chop firewood - best to make sure you have one of those." He gestures to the old cart in the yard. "Used that to get out here, but not worth much now. You could haul all the animal feed, firewood, or extra gear that you need in that, hauling it behind one of these horses. It's yours to use, if you want, just bring it back in one piece."

Isla looks thoughtful for a moment before responding, "I understand the concern, but I'm not sure how much longer we can afford to ignore Kressle. At the very least, I think we should scout it out. If there are too many of them, we don't have to charge in."

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger 1, Hp 13/13; Fort: +5, Reflex +4 Will +1; AC 17,

"Isla speaks wisely, I suppose. I feel like my ancestors would expect me to charge in and begin swinging when we first sight them..." Brandt feigns mock indignation at the thought of not immediately charging overwhelming odds...

"I imagine lads if we get ourselves one tent, and Isla gets her own tent, then we'd all suffice the needs of both warmth and propriety."

The next morning, the five of you prepare your horses for riding, and get a sixth ready with the cart to haul your supplies and camp gear. Nalys was surprised to see such creature, so he draw his club closer and made a loud whistle to call his winged friend attention.

Surprise round: draw weapon, call Seara closer (charge distance)

He was looking at approaching creature as he saw, Geliglee's warning. Without waiting for creature to attack, he jumped of his horse and called for divine power.

Normal round: dismount as move action, cast shillelag

Geliglee steps to the side as to not get his allies in his spell, and blasts a blinding cone of color at the beast.

Nalys gets his weapon out and whistles for his Seara to come closer. The bird wheels down near at hand.

[spoiler=GMScreen]1d6 ⇒ 3[/spoile
The worg capitalizes on the surprise advantage that it has against the party and charges forward, biting at the hindquarters of Gelliglee's riding dog.
Charge + Bite Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Trip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
It scores a massive bite on the poor riding dog, and manages to pull it down to the ground.

Round One

Nalys's spell causes his weapon to take on a different, more wicked hue, after he dismounts from his horse.

Isla's story rings out across the hills, and fills each of you with greater insight into combating this menace. She pulls her bow and arrows to the ready from the back of her horse.

The worg continues to bite at its downed opponent...
Bite Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Bite Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
...and you hear a leg bone crack under the force of its powerful jaws! A murderous gleam fills its eyes as it backs slightly away from each of the encroaching party members.

Gelliglee's spell blasts out a prismatic spray of lights and colors...
Worg Will Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20]
...but it manages to shake off the effect, and fixes Gelliglee with intense hatred.

Brandt leaps from the back of his horse, and calls it to stay in place as he readies his longbow. The arrow he looses into the worg thuds home with deadly accuracy, and the creature squeals at the impact.

We'll insert Calum's action as appropriate. I'm guessing a lance charge, but I could be wrong. Go ahead and post Round 2 actions. At this point, it appears to be injured, but not horribly, and has its eyes fixed on Gelliglee.

Well I mentioned I'd be taking the vanguard position so I was going to ride up and swing my sword since I would not have a straight line to charge through.

---Round 1---

Calum rides up to the beast, steadies William and swings his blade.

Mounted Sword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 241d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Add +1 to hit if attacking from my horse counts as higher ground. I don't think I'll confirm but if I do total of 15 to the beast.

Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 161d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

"What kind of creature is this? It walks like a wolf but appears to be intelligent. Regardless, taste my steel foul creature!"

---Round 2---

The momentum from his previous attack had placed Calum in a fairly uncomfortable position in his saddle and his sword arm went wide over the creatures head.

Mounted Sword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 81d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Round 2
Nalys felt himself pretty defenceless in front of that creature, but he imagined how small gnome should felt and this gave him some rage.
"Get away! We are not your pray!" he shouted, charging the wild animal.

Charge (+Inspire): 1d20 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 24 Damage(+Inspire): 2d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1, 4) + 1 + 1 = 7

He felt wolf's bones crushing under his blow. He whistled again, calling Seara to help him and she made her attack with her hard beak, falling from above.

Seara Charge (+Inspire): 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 1 = 15 Damage (+Inspire): 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 1 = 7

Round 2

Horrified by the brutal attack on the dog, Isla continues her song, hoping that its magic will continue to aid her allies.

Dismounting from her horse, she nervously fires her shortbow at the Worg.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 + 1 = 7

Brandt, seeing Geliglee in perhaps mortal danger, discards his longbow while rapidly closing on the beast and swinging his greataxe in a large arc. "You picked the wrong group wolf-thing!"

Attack +Inspire: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 1 = 19
damage +Inspire: 1d12 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 1 = 17

Calum's sword swings low and hard, opening a great rent in the dark beasts hide. It hisses evilly, but is not prepared for an equally hard blow to come from Nalys and his now-enchanted club. The creature is struck hard in the head, and collapses wetly to the ground before Seara can dive in to strike. It lies still, and does not move.

Dog Stabilize Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 (Insufficient)

Gelliglee's dog lies bleeding on the ground, clearly horribly injured and in need of immediate attention to evade death.

Combat ends after Nalys' turn at the beginning of Round 2. What do you do?
