The wizard shrugs, currently poking the obelisk with a bit of mud on the end of his staff. "I do not know, Nalnera. A few hours, a day, a week, many problems have taken centuries. I suggest we make camp for one day, at least, and I could give a better estimate."

Snorri indulges for a moment in a fantasy of splashing Erebos with the murky slime, before dismissing it as childish. "What I meant" he addresses Dasur "is that if you have a theory, we'll hear it, and if you can think of a test to run, we can run it; but if these runes are all that can be glimpsed from it, then perhaps we could consider them on our way to a more homely place."
"Could it just be a pillar marked with ancient words and a necromantic trap?"

Moving to the obelisk, the scieon of Tharnhammer raps his knuckles against the stone, trying to get a feel for it.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Yup, I know nothing about rocks. Karma for trading out racial bonuses.

Looking closely, Snorri can tell that the obelisk is a sort of grey stone that takes on no color from the strange radiation in this chamber. It is firm and resilient and about the same temperature as the air. Otherwise, it is not remarkable.

As you drag yourself from the mud, Erebos casually gestures with his index finger as if brushing something from your shoulders. The mud flies off, magically propelled. Iverna finds a spot nearby that is higher and drier and begins to set up camp. As she has for the past several days, she strings together long lines of gut with triple hooks, baits the hooks with bits of the previous day's catch, and casts the line out into the lake.

Erebos, troubled by the sudden lack of dwarven foolhardiness, moves out into the mud himself toward the obelisk. He moves lightly, hardly sinking at all, buoyed by his own natural magics. Carefully, without using his hands, he leans in close to the obelisk and his violet tongue lolls out and scrapes upward. He leans back, closes his eyes for a moment, and, apparently none the worse from the experience, turns back toward the shore.

He wears a smug but thoughtful smile, but, unusually, says nothing.

Dasur takes out a parchment and begins making notes, scanning the magical energies surrounding the obelisk.

When Erebos approaches he begins to toss arcane inquires towards the Dark Elf, momentarily pausing to watch Erebos lick the obelisk. A beat passes as Dasur carefully observes his fellow wizard, and then he looks down to rapidly scribble on the parchment: Licking obelisk had NO visible effect.

Is this going to be a skill challenge like collapsing the tunnel? That was fun.

Iverna cooks up the last of the mushroom-fish sausages that she brought from home, frying them in a small self heating pan.

"No need to keep these around now that we have so much aurochs meat. I'm glad we aren't staying here long. That thing gives me the creeps."

Erebos joins those who are studying the obelisk. He approaches to within a few feet of it and then raises himself slowly out of the mud, ascending to the top of the structure while appearing to be standing on air. He seems entranced by the object, occasionally commenting on observations Dasur makes.

It is necessary to use Read Magic in order to study the text of the obelisk, but of course there are also non-magical aspects to study.

I'm going to let you guys decide what skills you want to use to try to penetrate the secrets of the obelisk. Some ideas are obvious, like craft: stonemason, knowledge: arcana or religion or engineering, spellcraft, even healing, perhaps. Everyone who wants to play along can post in sequence just like a combat round. Everyone who wants to avoid the thing can camp and chat.

Anything revealed by Dasur's spellcraft check from before?

Dasur comments on Torvi's comment without looking up from the runes he's sketching onto a parchment. "Could it be tooth or bone? A horn, hoof or nail? Perhaps Earth did not deliver this mystery to us, but this is the enchanted carrion of some ancient great beast used in necromatic rituals." The wizard speculates, clearly of open mind on the subject.

Dasur believes that the spells are part of the object, not so much something imbued into it but something that is leaking out. He is able to trace out a spell for cursing a target with necromantic energy, permanently weakening it.

The obelisk does seem to be bone, though far harder and stronger than any humanoid bone.

This is what I was getting at with licking it. It is often possible to tell the difference between stone and bone (even fossilized bone) with a tongue test. Bone is porous and sticks to the tongue, while stone is usually smooth.

Did not know about the tongue test! That's fascinating and a clever way to physically test samples. I want to know who the first person to go around licking fossils and rocks was, though.

"Mmm." Dasur makes something akin to a rumbling noise as he comes to a conclusion on the nature of the spells surrounding the obelisk. "This object is intrinsically magical and leaking arcane energies from within. Much of it is chaotic, but amongst the chaos I can see at least one familiar, fully-formed spell. It is a necromatic curse, one that can permanently cripple a living creature or bestow a lifetime of unfortunate luck."

He lowers the parchment containing his magical formulae, looking the obelisk up and down once more. "The evidence we have collected indicates this is the skeletal remains of a magical creature of great power, so much its bones still resonate powerful necromatic energies. Given the history of Jungle, and lacking any counter evidence, I believe we can say with confidence that this is bone fragment of the ancient Titan of yore Z'ggu-Xan-Zara, marked for death by the gods and defeated by their champions centuries ago during our ancestors Quest for Sky. "

The wizard begins walking around the base of the obelisk, looking for any tool marks or other attempts to modify the obelisk. "In the right hands fragments of this bone, when used as a base material, could be used to create powerful magical items. A staff capable of raising an entire graveyard, cursing an entire village, sucking the life out of many peoples." He drones on in a lecturing tone, speaking from the top of his thoughts. "I do not know if it can be harnessed or destroyed, or if we possess the means. But it is here, and fate has brought it to our attention."

You have several days of travel here to take care of any sort of downtime activities you want to get up to. Iverna seems restless and agitated. Erebos draws and writes fiercely, trying to decode the things he failed to learn at the obelisk.

Finally, skirting the shorline, you come to a place where the ground is firm all the way up to the water, as if the underlying stone comes closer to the surface of the loam here. You find an aged stone dock jutting into the Lake. It is made entirely of quarried stone that matches the stone and construction of the bridges in Fasturvalt.

Iverna stare with her eyes even wider than usual and softly says, "The svirfneblin had a colony in the Fungal Jungle? Who woulda thought so."

The water around the dock is muddy and still. Strange bioluminescent algae bloom in the water, giving it a faint violet glow or visible light.

Their arrival at the ancient docks causes a pause in his studies, and the wizard climbs out of the back of the wagon. He approaches the quarried stone and couches, placing an ink-stained hand upon the rock.

"The Stone guides us once more, my friends. May the Svirfneblin ancestors watch over us from the Flowstone as we cross the water to their ancient constructions." He murmurs, standing up to look across the waters. The glowing algae catch his attention, and he gazes at the sparkling shapes for a quiet moment.

Looks like it's raft building time. Dasur can use Animate Rope, Enlarge Person, Ant Haul, and Unseen Servant to help out, but we're mostly lacking in materials. We could spend a few days on the docks researching the nearby Flora and Fauna to see if we could float over on a mushroom cap, find any kind of binding or sealing agents for converting the wagon to a raft, etc?

"I shall not be tasting the dock, Torvi."

Erebos and Iverna spend some time talking before sharing their limited knowledge of the fungus.

Iverna speaks, "Most of the fungi we use the way you surface folk seem to use wood require either alchemical hardening or at least smoking. Fungi are porous and will absorb water. The gnomes of Fasturvalt build coracles from leather, not fungi boats. Erebos says that his people mostly build vessels from metal. But maybe if we used the wagon for the parts of the boat that touch the water, we could use fungi for the rest. Are any of you carpenters?"

"Not a carpenter, no... there is a spell I might try on the morrow, flotsam vessel, that creates a raft out of river detritus, but it would only last a few hours and support two of us. Other than that I fear there is not much that my magic can do to help here."

Knocking into Torvi with her shoulder, "Nope, your turn."

Shrugging, "I guess we have to use the fungus and cart. Might as well learn a trade now."
