Take 20 saves the day, hooray!

Dasur is furiously modeling the inner structure of the tunnel on parchment when Glenda interrupts him. The wizard gives her a blank expression before getting up and looking at the area she was pointing at.

Several moments pass as he stares at it, hands going from his hips, to his chin, to the top of his head, before he unceremoniously announces- "I was wrong. Completely wrong. I did not see this before, and made incorrect assumptions based on the lack of visible structural fatigue. Knowing this, we only need to find the weakest point near the tunnel entrance for Regnir to strike. Now, is it here..? No, see, if you put your finger on it and follow the hairline cracks..."

Dasur taps his staff against a specific spot on the support near the tunnel entrance. "Here. Regnir strikes this pillar while we burn the vines where the tunnel meets the natural stone."

Snorri watches over his companions finding the weak points in the structures. As little as he knows of engineering, and as abhorrent as he finds the fleshwarped architecture, he feels that this must be done. The responsibility gnaws at him, as he wonders for the thousandth time whether he's doing the right and righteous thing, or dooming all of dwarfkind to death.

We know that you can accomplish the damage and the final strike. Regnir will eventually hit the attack ac, after all. Go ahead and write that up. Then we will probably hand wave the rush back to Fasturvalt, or at least almost there, unless there is something you guys want to get up to.

Standing as still as a statue and just as breathless. The only movement is the slow stream of the green goop that drips off of Regnir. Swiftly moving to the place Dasur is pointing to, "Finally! I felt that I might have to endure watching you all die of old age while I waited."

Looking over at Glenda, "Do not forget you are to heal me when this is done."

Turning to the stone, "Get out of the tunnel are know that you all might of died if not for me."

Waiting until he is told that they all are out of the soon to be pile of rubble and have lit the vines ablaze before repeatedly slamming himself into the pillar. Never stopping his fury driven assault on the stones until he again rests in the mind of Nalnera.

Shaking her head and backing out of the cave, "He is not a modest creature. Just ignore him, that is what I do."

Quietly watching the vines catch fire and Regnir repeatedly rush at the wall even as the rock start to fall. Biting the inside of her cheek to keep the tears away. He is not actually going to die.

Flinching at the noise. Regnir? Merciful Gods do you ever shut up?

Smiling and letting Regnir back out of her head. Again green thick liquid runs down from the crown of her head and starts to wrap around her like rope. Standing hunched forward made of swirling black and pale green. Looming over Nalnera and looking expectantly at Glenda.

Dasur moves out of the tunnel with all the speed of grazing mule, looking over the entrance once more before giving the signal to Regnir to begin bashing the support ribs.

The wizard extends his hand, fingers splayed, and utters a single magical word. Gouts of flame shoot from his fingertips, illuminating the walls of the cave with dancing orange lights. The "vines" sizzle and pop under the magical assault, and with Regnir's assistance the tunnel collapses with a mighty rumble and a rush of dust.

Dusted in a fine layer of stone, Dasur turns to the group and begins walking back to the cart. "It is done. May this be as the prophecy intended."

Buoyed by the success of your stone smashing, you begin the 10 day march back to Fasturvalt. Erebos seems troubled and then increasingly restless before finally coming forward with whatever is bothering him.

[b]"Noble Dwarves, there does seem to be one problem with your plan to march back into the gnomish settlement. You may certainly return without difficulty, but you cannot march into town with a Dark Elf as hostage, prisoner, or companion. I am known to Malathorn, the chief of the Drow delegation. My presence would alert him to the fact that the Baroness' plans have been disrupted. Of course, you will want me to testify before Lord Geirni, and so perhaps you can smuggle me into the Lord's presence, but we should plan for such difficulties before we arrive."[b]

This is fairly early, before you have made it back to the Throttleneck.

Dasur is quick with a solution, which ironically enough comes from the Drow's own spellcasting. "The scroll of invisibility I found on your person could be incorporated into your spellbook, providing yourself with a simple and consistent means of smuggling you anywhere. Of course I was planning on learning it myself once I have mastered its script, so I would ask for an opportunity to study it later."

The wizard seems to lack the innate distrust of the dark elf the rest of the group harbors, considering the Drow could litterally vanish if given access to this magic.

Iverna bristles, "Yes, Dasur, we should definitely teach the Drow wizard how to make himself invisible and then walk into Fasturvalt with him. Why don't we also teach him how to throw gouts of fire at the mushroom fields..."

"I agree. Erebos has not betrayed us up until now, but teaching him invisibility is more than I'm comfortable with. What if a couple of us tries to keep Dandiel occupied, and the others sneak our guest to Lord Geirni? This would require a way to communicate, however... Or perhaps we could lure them out of the city somehow? Forge a letter ordering him to return to Vothys?"

Iverna's sarcasm seems to be lost on Dasur, and Snorri's agreement with her words followed by dissent of Dasur's ideas just seems to confuse him.

The wizard furrows his brows, and after briefly considering if burning down the mushroom fields would increase next year's yield, concentrates instead on Snorri's idea. "I have access to Message, but the range is only 120 ft or so. Having Erebos draft the letter to recall Malathorn would be more effective. How do the Dark Elves receive messages from their superiors?"

Malathorn carefully ponders his answer. "By the beards of you ancestors, dwarves, is there nothing I can do to prove my worth!? Malathorn is operating mostly without interference. He has his orders, whatever they are, and will carry them out. Likely only the Baroness and possibly her lieutenants know exactly what he is supposed to be doing. Urgent messages could be sent through magical means. I suppose I could attempt to deliver him a message personally, but that would be done only under the most extreme circumstances. Your efforts at the secret tunnel might be enough to warrant such a breach."

Dasur nods slowly as he absorbs Erebos' words. "I recall a story of a wise king once saying "a drop of truth in a poisonous lie masks the foul taste". If Erebos tells Malathorne the tunnel is destroyed, he will be distracted attempting to communicate this information to Vothys, yes?"

Pointy ears, backstabbing nature, tall- it's nearly impossible to tell these elves apart!

Dasur shrugs at Nalnera. "The orc armies of Vothys will discover the collapsed tunnel as soon as they attempt to march through it, which according to Erebos will be soon. More importantly, how will Erebos leave Malathorn and return to us for an audience with the king without arousing suspicion?"

The wizard drones on as he argues his position. "I still believe allowing Erebos to become invisible has the highest probablility of success. If you desire insurance, a rope tied around his waist will remain invisible as well for up to 10 feet away. In addition, I have a scroll of glitterdust to reveal his location should he attempt to flee." Is stated matter-of-factly.

"Of course there is always the possibility that Malathorn will be on the way to, or meeting with the king when we ascend he stairs to the throne, at which point violence may become inevitable. No matter what course we choose there is a risk of being detected involved, but I suspect the ancient pyroclastic flows of Fasturvalt know of our mission to protect them and will hopefully shield us from harm."

"Trust may come with time, Erebos. We have given you your weapons back, but this will be the first real test. Regnir, I am not averse to risk but I'll keep it to a minimum."

Snorri rubs his chin, trying to calculate the odds for the different plans.

"Alright, Dasur, I'd go with the invisibility plan, as luring Malathorn out seems to be unfeasible." I'd be more comfortable if he were the one casting the spell, or if we could copy the scroll, but we don't have the materials. "And may the Earth Immortal help us."

Erebos takes the time to scratch the runes of the invisibility into his spellbook just before you are ready to take on the final march into Fasturvalt, the whole time discussing the spell with Dasur.

Iverna seems unusually twitchy and uncomfortable as you draw nearer to Fasturvalt. You return to the familiar mushroom and structure filled cavern to find it exactly as you left it. The river runs noisily through the cavern, the flowstone wall sits as it has for millennia, the mushrooms grow. All is well.

Iverna turns to you and says, "Do we want to go straight to Lord Geirni's hall?"

Dasur watches as Erebos pens the spell into his spellbook, asking a variety of questions about his arcane dictation. There are still things he does not understand about magic in the Underdark, but it is clear everything is being quickly absorbed.

The dwarf looks to the monumental flowstone as they enter the deep gnomes' cavern, staring for several moments at the wondrous structure. "After all this I must study the flowstone again. I must compare its current crystal structure to my previous notes- Now that I am aware of the impending danger I can look for specific signs related to the future of the cavern."

In response to Iverna, the wizard gives a curt nod. "Yes. There is no reason to linger."

"Aye. The more we loiter, the more likely it is that we'll bump into Malathorn. And this time we shan't leave our weapons. We won't attack unless attacked, but while Geirni holds the place, this is hostile grounds. For the gnomes' own good."

Iverna leads you through the mushroom fields and side streets until you get to the open square. At that point, you have to come out in the open in order to cross the square and ascend the steps past the armory and up to the Hall. Just as before, there are only two guards at the entrance to the Hall. They recognize you and allow you to pass into the Hall.

Hall Description Reminder:
This is a large columned hall with a great fire pit at he center and the almost comically oversized throne of the svirfneblin lord at the far end. The walls are adorned with richly made tapestries and banner woven of fungus fibers and even surface silk some of which are older than the town itself. The fire pit always burns low, the flames fed by mushroom bark. The warm orange glow keeps this room well lit by svirfneblin standards and anyone with low-light vis ion will have no trouble seeing. The room is also pleasantly warm if a little smoky at time.

As you enter the smoky Hall, you find Lord Geirni on his oversized throne, and Malathorn sitting on a large cushion nearby. Clearly you have interrupted a conversation.

Gerni addresses you, "Ah, the dwarven treasure hunters. Have you found your treasure already and returned to repay our kindness?"

They may regret not taking our weapons this time.
After checking that Erebos is still nearby, swallowing his concern for a betrayal, Snorri addresses Geirni. "In a fashion, milord. As we were on our way, we acquired precious information concerning a deadly threat on Fasturvalt, an invading army headed your way to enslave your people. An army, I am sorry to say, led by those you consider allies, none other than the Dark Elves. We managed to defeat a forward party, but the bulk of their army is incoming, while the foppish backstabber at your side tries to poison your ear with lies and empty promises. For the sake of your people, you must take up arms and set up a resistance, or this place will be burnt to the ground, and, if you are lucky, they may just kill you straight away, rather than binding you in chains to work in the mines or feed you to the silk-spiders." Not that he would be of any use to the drow, beyond amusement.
"Now, Malathorn will speak up, asking what proof we have, as they have been so generous to you, with their protection and all. Well, if it's not proof enough that the sheriff was specifically murdered by giant spiders, and he was the one to speak against the alliance, we have someone that can speak about those plans. If you may, Erebos?"
Earth Immortal, if he betrays us now I'll cut off his head, be it the last thing I do.

Dasur looks to the flowstone as they enter Lord Gerni's hall, searching for any sign of the events to come. Alas, if I only had a moment to use my magnifying lenses, we could be forewarned.

The wizard's brows furrow at the sight of Malathorn within the chambers. Fate turns against us. The entire prophecy is at risk.

Adding to the scion's case, he mentions: "The Skis'raal that kidnapped the Sheriff were guarding a highly suspicious emptied room, once most likely used to cache supplies, that contained a forgotten flask of gnomesblot."

Ink-stained fingers clutch his staff as a dire look settles upon his usually impassive features when Snorri calls upon Erebos to speak. The future of Dammerhall lies with the next few words of a Dark Elf.

Erebos steps from the shadows and begins to speak, bringing just a moment of confusion flashing across Malathorn's features. With a smirk, Erebos attempts to grasp Geirni's attention, "Lord Snorri speaks truth, Lord Geirni. Before these brave and fierce dwarven warriors destroyed them, I was the Captain of a squad of Black Orc scouts. We were holding a strategic point as an advance team, holding the intersection for an army of Orcs and Drow who are coming to make Fasturvalt a stronghold for their expansion into the Upper Azathyr. You, Lord Geirni, should immediately arrest and execute Malthorn there and then allow these warriors, and myself if you would have me, help you prepare for the coming invasion."

Malathorn bristles with the accusations, his face contorting in anger, "LIES, Lord Geirni! I demand satisfaction. This dwarven rabble comes here to attempt to tie us to the atrocious murder of your Sheriff, just because there were spiders involved. Oh, and the Skis'raal villains had a cache of poison, which, by the way, we have seen only in the hands of these dwarven shysters! I ask that you allow me to drive these scoundrels from Fasturvalt. Snorri's smile is fierce and predatory as Erebos proves loyal and Malathorn squirms. "And what cause would we have for not taking over as we came here, rather than coming back and lose the surprise factor, if we wanted to take over Fasturvalt? Which we don't, incidentally."
"This place holds no strategic advantage for us, since there are no dwarven strongholds near it, while Vothys is right next door and could use an outpost towards the Deep Roads. Dasur loves the flowstone, and we all loved Mother Mee's soup, and these are our interests in Fasturvalt. Snorri's voice is loaded with disgust. "Calling us, calling me a liar will not help your life expectation. But I'll be generous, and give you a choice here. Return to Vothys bearing news of your failure, try to fight us and force Lord Geirni's cleaners to wipe your blood off this nice floor, or run away as far as your legs can carry you. "It is so. I doubt that Malathorn's information will lead to a change of plans, but that army is no joke. By the way, Iverna, I'd appreciate if you could shadow Malathorn and be sure he doesn't leave any ugly surprises behind."

It's more than likely that the orcs will smash through any barrier, unless there are ways I don't know of raising the stone against the attackers. This means that we'll have to switch to guerrilla tactics. Ambushes, attrition. Possibly sabotage. An open clash will be unwinnable, but gnomes are stealthy. Traps will be our friends, carpenters and stonecutters should get to work. Send word to Tamar, his knowledge of the tunnels will be invaluable. Any secret passage that is around we must know. Blacksmiths and fletchers must get to work until we have enough weapons for a siege, I'll start training and drilling everyone who can hold a spear or a sword. Then food. It's possible that they'll block the roads, so a stockpile is needed. And it must be hidden, so that the attackers can't make use of it."

Snorri glances at Geirni as he realizes he's bypassing the gnome lord and assuming control.
"This is my advice, my Lord, the call is yours, but the army is coming. And if they break through, they won't be kind to you."

Geirni pops another candy into his mouth, sucking feverishly. He is clearly deeply troubled. "Of course, of course. We don't know anything about war. We should bring together the other leaders and see what they have to say. Tamar, yes. Tamar can build walls or something."

In game terms, Sheriff Gunther was a 3rd level Ranger, and Harvald is a 1st level warrior.

Geirni tries to keep it together in presenting the situation, but a few sentences in to discussing the drow invasion, he breaks down in sobs.

"Tammar and Miatha, you are our respected elders, and Harvald, you are doing the best you can. We are out of our depth here. Thank the stone that these dwarves were sent to help us. I am going to name them the Defenders of Fasturvalt and give them control of our defense. Lord Snorki, I mean Snorri, please forgive me. Let us descend the flowstone stairs to the city square and announce our troubles to the people. We need to begin preparations immediately."

Geirni continues to munch on the candy, sucking it like a chain smoker. If it is poisoned, he is in trouble.

Dasur watches Geirni with growing unease. It was clear the gnome was unfit to rule- compared to even the stories of their ancient dwarven kings, Geirni was a soot stain on their boots.

As they descend the steps of the flowstone, Dasur turns to his future liege. "Snorri, with your permission I would perfer to skip this announcement and get straight to work. If I may borrow Tamar, the two of us can identify tunnels the drow invasion could pass through and collapse all but one. This will both funnel the army in a predictable fashion and allow us to engineer a trap to devastate their forward orcs as they pass into the cavern. For this task I request the services of Fasturvalt's most skilled quarriers."

Snorri clenches his fist and his jaw. Next one to call me Snorki gets punched. And I do hope that deep gnomes have a democratic system of sort to change leaders.
In a masterful exercise in self-restraint, he steadies his voice.
"Aye, Dasur, get to work and let us know if you need anything else."
"Master Miatha, I would welcome any advice or ability you could lend to the cause. Master Harvald, we'll need a spear or a crossbow in every gnome's hand. I'll try to make a militia out of you."
"Glenda, any support magic you can lend us will be like gold. Ancestor Regnir, would you be a sentry for us?"
"Iverna, perhaps you could be helpful to Dasur and Tammar, but if you have a better idea on how your skills may be of use, I'll gladly hear it."

Before his next line, Snorri takes a deep breath and sends a quick prayer.
"Erebos, you could have betrayed us, but you kept your word and helped us. Would you help us in defending this place? Once we are victorious, you may walk free, if you so wish. Or you may... you may swear fealty to me as your liege lord, and I would take you as my retainer. You would join us, not as a prisoner, but as an ally, share in the danger and the rewards of our quest."
If there's doubt in the dwarf's heart, his voice is steady. No risk, no glory. May the Earth Immortal watch over us all.

Once Dasur and Tammar are alone, he loads a pipe and smokes while the two of them discuss what is possible and what is best.

"Working ourselves near to death, we could plug the northern and southwestern entrances in two weeks. That would let us control where the enemies are coming from. After that they have to come across the bridges. We could rig those to collapse under them, dumpin' some of them into the Snabbenflood."

Mistress Miatha and her rascally pet compsognathus will discuss healing with Glenda.

"I have a small supply of medicines that can be prepared and used by any numbskull. We can concentrate the wounded in one of the homes near the staircase, well back of the conflict."

Miatha has a small stockpile of alchemical healing items like blood block and healy myrrh, as well as a few doses of things like Troll Oil and Troll Styptic.

Harvald does his best to look grim and fierce, "Of course, Lord Snorri. I will gather a group of strong men and collect the weapons and armor from the Armory. We can outfit 60 gnomes with short sword, spear, crossbow, shields, and chain shirts. More than that if we split the weapons up. You will find that, though we are small, we will be fierce in defending our home! With your permission, of course, Lord Geirni."

Geirni swallows hard and says, "Of course, take my guards and deputize some gnomes to help you with arming everyone. Snorri and I will join you after our announcement."

------------------------

Erebos replies, "Lord Snorri, I am a trained officer. Though these gnomes are quite different from the troops to which I am accustomed, I am happy to take on the training of a squad of militia. When the time for battle comes, I will lend sword and spell to the defense of this town if that is what you wish. It will be fun to watch the faces on my commanders' faces when they see what we prepare for them."

Here are the checks I need from you folks.

Snorri (I assume) make your speech to the gnomish population and make a Diplomacy check. You get a +2 bonus each for befriending and involving Tammar, Miatha, and Geirni, and Harvald, but a -2 penalty for being chummy with Iverna, who people are sort of afraid of. So a +6 bonus total.

Dasur, decide exactly what you want to do (plug tunnels, trap bridges, etc.) and make a Knowledge (Engineering) check for each item.

Glenda, make a Diplomacy check to represent organizing your medic teams, and a Healing check to represent how good a job you do preparing.

Snorri and Erebos can train 20 gnomes each of the 60 or so who can be fully outfitted, which accounts for 40. Harvald can lead the remaining 20, but Nalnera and Regnir would be a better choice. The gnomes are in such terrible fighting shape that having any leader is better than what they would have otherwise, so they gain benefits for each week they are trained. I think you have a total of 3 weeks to prepare.

Dasur unrolls a basic map of the deep ggnome's cavernous home, though it contains some information about elevation and structures. "Then we will work with little rest. Concentrating their orcs into a funnel will reduce the effectiveness of their numbers. We should prioritize collapsing the northern and southeastern entrances so we are not caught unaware. With any remaining time we wll set traps and modify the fortifications I will be readying. Every sleep cycle I will ask the Stone to aid us, raising walls and sloping the ground on our choice battlefield."

Okay here's Dasur's plan with Engineering rolls, in the order he will attempt to see to their completion.

Engineering (collapse northern tunnel): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Engineering (collapse southwestern tunnel): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

Engineering (Trap bridges over Snabbenflood): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19

Every day for 10 days Dasur will be preparing and casting Expeditious Construction 5 times a day to make 50 feet of 3-foot wall. That's at least 500 feet of 3-foot wall to serve as cover / orc speedbumps on their chosen battlefield. It will be one contiguous wall, and he will cast more days to finish the wall if it requires over 500 feet. If they finish all the tunnel collapsing and bridge trapping before the army arrives the remainder of the time will be spent fortifying the wall.

Engineering (Expeditious Construction wall): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
