For years now, the ruler of Kalsgard, Svienn Blood-Eagle, has been feeling the weight of age. Since no Ulfen hero has volunteered themselves, and because Svienn grows tired, he put forth a call to summon any who think themselves mighty enough to kill a linnorm.

If they do so, he will willingly give up the throne of his city.

The most daring to answer this first call is a half-orc man called Sven, an eldritch knight stupid or brave enough to travel to the volcanic wastes where the Tor Linnorms live.

Standing atop a foothill near the edge of the linnorm's territory, he surveys it. The linnorm is nowhere to be seen, but the active volcano nearest him seems like a good place to start.

Sven, make a Survival or Perception check to search the volcano for signs of the linnorm's lair.

Note: While I was prepping my character last night I forgot to add the ivory statuette for Contingency, so trade out 1500g of diamond dust for the statuette before we begin.

Prep before going on the hunt.:
1. Precast scrolls of clone and grow them, preserving them once a week with Gentle Repose. Store finished clones in bag of holding.
CL check for scroll vs. DC 16: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
CL check for scroll vs. DC 16: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
CL check for scroll vs. DC 16: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
Wisdom check to avoid mishap: 1d20 ⇒ 9

CL check for scroll vs. DC 16: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

2. Contingency cast the day before setting out, Condition: Cast Flaming Aura if I would take fire damage.

3. At the beginning of the day, cast Life Bubble, Overland Flight, Ant Haul and Mage Armor.

4. A scroll of heal and the vial of Saline Purge are in my wrist sheathes.

Having finally reached the nearest active volcano, Sven made a few preparations and then set to work tracking the great beast that would bring him glory.

Cast Heroism and See Invisibility.

Sven easily picks up on the tracks of a tor linnorm, winding haphazardly around the volcano's base and up its side. The tracks have wide gaps in them when the linnorm flew, but it's hunted and slithered enough in this territory that Sven can tell mostly where the thing's lair is.

Traveling up the side of the mountain, the mountain's top belches out a gout of magma near the top - it rolls very slowly down the mountainside.

Ahead lies an outcropping of rock, from behind which Sven can hear shouting, in Giant:

Giant:
"Stupid creatures! We must move swiftly if we are to avoid the linnorm's wrath! Now, come!"

Cowardly giants... you would think with bodies so large they'd have courage to match. Sven fell back and cast invisibility, shield and enlarge person, before flying forward to see what the giants were up to.

Sven gets up and over the rock outcropping to see a strange sight - a pair of fire giants arguing over a small group of eight Medium magma elementals. The magma elementals are all bound around their torso with iron bands that connect to chains - one of the giants holds a ring in both hands that connects to all of the chains, and thus has a handle on all of the magma elementals.

The other giant, meanwhile, chastises the magma elementals for not moving fast enough.

Sven Stealth (Invisibility, Heroism): 1d20 + 2 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 20 + 2 = 28
Giants' Perception (Aid Another): 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 14 + 2 = 27

OOOOOHHHHH

The giants don't notice Sven's presence as he hovers, invisibly, above them.

How big are the elementals? Sounds like they're being gathered up as slaves? For the rules of this game, must I fight this group? They haven't noticed me, don't appear to be blocking me and I have nothing to gain from fighting them other than increased risk.

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

Elementals are Medium - you certainly don't need to fight them if you don't want to. You're easily able to avoid them, using your resources, and that's good enough for me.

Ok, then that's what I'll do. If I come out victorious, perhaps I'll stop by let them know the volcano can be theirs, if they swear fealty to me. Having fire giant allies can't be a bad thing.

Sven had more important things to do than wrestle fire giants on the slopes of a volcano. Since they obviously feared the dragon, perhaps they'd be interested in joining him after the beast was defeated. Sven continued on his way, hunting his true quarry.

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

Sven passes invisibly by the fire giants and their magma giant slaves, and as he does so they get going, dragging the elementals forcibly away from the volcano.

Sven's easily able to pick back up on the linnorm's trail, heading up to nearly the peak of the volcano. It takes about an hour, and his shield, invisibility and enlarge person spells run out before he gets close to the entrance of the lair.

Before he reaches the lair itself, though, the mountainside rumbles - out of a cave entrance on the side of the mountain slithers an immense, serpentine creature. Over fifty feet long, the creature clambers out of the inside of the volcano on four immense legs, its eyes fixed down the mountainside. A quick look confirms that it sees the fire giants and their magma slaves escaping down the mountainside, but before it can take to the air in pursuit it notices Sven flying nearby.

It laughs, a sound like an old car shuddering to life.

Draconic:
"Ah, good - an appetizer before the main course."

"Come, rest in my maw."

It opens its mouth wide, holding it there for a moment, before leaping up to attack.

Tor Linnorm Initiative: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25
Sven Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

It leaps into the air, wingless but magically winding into the air towards Sven. It closes to within 60ft in the air, and opens it mouth. It belches forth a wave of searing-hot ash and smoke. As the breath weapon collides with Sven, his contingent flaming aura spell activates, inuring him against the fire effects of the breath weapon. Meanwhile, the choking and blinding smoke that accompanies it is held at bay by Sven's life bubble.

Sven, you've found the tor linnorm! It's your turn. You're both in the air. It's 60ft distant from you.

Sven drew his greataxe as he flew up and out of the smoke as he closed within forty feet of the great wyrm, unscathed by its fiery blast.

Draconic:
"I think you'll find me a bit tough to swallow, pathetic snake."

Floating above the billowing smoke, Sven hefted his greataxe and gathered the power in his blood, forcing a pure black beam to erupt from his forehead and streak towards the ferocious linnorm. A moment later, a second ray blasted forth from his outstretched hand.

The twin beams both penetrate the dragon's resistances, and easily find purchase in the immense beast's hide. Where the two beams strike, the linnorm's scales crack and turn black, and rage clouds the thing's eyes.

Draconic:
"You'll pay for that pain, puny human."

It spits out words as it charges. When it closes to twenty feet, it lashes out with its tail - the long appendage attempting to wrap around Sven as surely as it strikes him.

Tail Attack vs. Sven (Power Attack, Negative Levels, Charge): 1d20 + 29 - 7 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 29 - 7 - 3 + 2 = 27
Damage (Power Attack, Vital Strike): 9d6 + 9 + 14 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 1, 4, 6, 4, 3, 3) + 9 + 14 = 58

The tail strikes heavily, knocking the breath out of Sven. Unfortunately for the dragon, Sven's a little tougher than most of its prey. Not only that, but his freedom of movement effect protects him from the grasping of the thing's tail. The linnorm can't find good purchase and snarls as it pulls its tail back.

Tor Linnorm HP: 405/405 (Max 420) - Three negative levels, Charge AC

Sven takes 58 damage from an Improved Vital Strike tail attack, then it's his turn.

Sven staggers under the vicious blow, but maintains his resolve; he knew what was in store for him. Still too far to properly engage, he opted to further weaken the creature while he closed the distance.

One of Sven's enervations spiderwebs off of an invisible barrier of antimagic before colliding with the beast, and then it lashes with one of several claws while he closes with it. The other enervation blackens another wide section of the thing's scales, and it visibly weakens.

Snarling, the tor linnorm sees that Sven is severely wounded. It lashes out with six attacks - a poisonous bite, four claws and a tail attack. While Sven is immune to the poison from the bite and the grapple from the tail, he isn't immune to the damage from all of the blows.

When the linnorm finishes its attacks, it looks at the torn-up Sven and exclaims in surprise,

Draconic:
"How is it that you still live, little one?"

Tor Linnorm HP: 390/390 (Max 420) - Six negative levels

Sven takes 40 damage from an AoO and then a shit-ton (that is, 258 damage) from a full-attack from the linnorm.

Draconic:
"There's still some fight left in me. Let's see how you like it."

With deep slashes across his chest, Sven smiled through the pain, raised up his axe and shouted an arcane challenge. The blade of the axe twisted, then became impossibly thin just before Sven swung it down with renewed vigor.

The dragon snarls, intent on making sure that even this immensely tough hoo-man falls to his might. The dragon is fast and precise, and Sven not very well protected - more mortal wounds appear all over Sven's body, but Sven still doesn't fall - the tor linnorm's lack of acid damage attacks prevents him from outright killing Sven.

When does regeneration end? Yai-mimic gives me regeneration for a number of rounds equal to the spell, and I cast it on round 2. We're coming up on round 5. Do I need to refresh it this coming round, or can I do that on round 6? I'm a little unclear if round 2 counted for the duration.

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

I don't think that round 2 counts against the duration. It gives you regeneration on rounds 3, 4, 5 and 6. You need to refresh it by round 6.

The dragon, now severely wounded, growls as it tries to finally slay this creature. Even another tor linnorm would have died at this point - the tor simply doesn't understand what's going on.

Sven kills the tor linnorm in a burst of glorious energy, severing its head from its body before the thing even hits the ground.

It bestows one final bit of harm on the destroyed half-orc. He is cursed by it and his blood begins to boil, delivering searing pain. Beyond that, though, Sven's body is completely destroyed. Only his willpower holds him together.

Luckily, when he dies (which he will, in mere moments) a clone inside of his bag of holding will awaken!

As a quick wrap-up before we turn it over to the next challenger, here's how Sven lives to claim his rightful place:

Epilogue:
Chasing the body downward, Sven fired off a victory shot from his forehead, as much for celebration as it was to hold his tattered body together for a few more moments. With that handled, he drank his saline purge, which cooled the fires in his blood.

Landing next to the fallen corpse, Sven retreived a fresh body, from his bag, along with a scroll of Restoration before he lied down and finally allowed death to take him.

His eyes opened. To the right of him a massive draconic corpse. To the left, a miserable pile of shredded meat vaguely in the shape of a man. He stood up, collected his gear, and removed one of his negative levels with the convenient scroll. Next, he carved up the dragon's hide, infusing it with magic and a spidery script appeared, showing a map to the linnorm's hoard.

After refreshing his magical protections and enhancements (especially ant haul), he gathered up the great wyrm's head, and his own remains. After tossing the latter into the volcano, he flew to claim the dragon's treasure, before heading back outside. After offering the fire giants control of the volcano in return for fealty, he teleported back to Kalsgard with his trophies.

After Sven took down a tor linnorm, Svienn Blood-Eagle stepped down as the ruler of Kalsgard and took his final voyage across the sea, to the happy farm with green fields where all the Linnorm Kings go when they're bored with being king.

Sven became the ruler, but Svienn's departure didn't put an end to the competition for the throne of Kalsgard. Competitors to Sven show up, starting with the chakram-thrower Churley, who's looking to replicate Sven's deed of taking down a tor linnorm...hopefully without dying, and then wrest the throne from the man.

Traveling to a different volcanic area takes a few days out of Kalsgard, but Churley can tell at first glance: This area contains a linnorm.

Churley starts to move through the volcanic wasteland, having spotted the entrance to the linnorm's lair from afar. He moves up increasingly steep hills and leaps acrobatically across a thin lava flow.

When he reaches the foot of the mountain, still a few hours' hike away from the peak and thus, the linnorm's lair, he hears some chittering from... somewhere, in a language that he doesn't speak. Suddenly a group of red-skinned, emaciated humanoids carrying longspears appears near him, led by a larger, muscular demon. The leader demon walks on cloven feet and has purple skin, a big, complicated set of horns and razor-sharp claws.

"Boss, this one's got as much loot as any linnorm!", one of the emaciated ones calls, his voice little and snivvelly. The lead demon cackles.

"Mortal!", he calls, his voice deep and booming. "You have heard there is a linnorm in the area, yes? Perhaps if you tell us exactly where to find it and its hoard, we will be quick when we kill you."

He grins evilly. "Perhaps."

There are seven creatures in total. Six of the smaller, thinner ones, and one of the larger, stronger-looking demons.

The remaining six demons chatter between themselves in Abyssal before snapping their longspears up.

Four of them circle around the long way, two of them moving behind Churley and two of them moving to flank the sides of him. Eyes far too tiny for a head of that size regard Churley coldly. Slowly, the whole of the thing's body comes out of the cave, four legs propelling a massive serpentine body. It speaks, though Churley cannot understand its arcane tongue.

Three of Churley's starknives land hits, carving deep bloody rents in the linnorm's flesh. Even after only a few hits, the linnorm's hide is ragged and torn, and blood splashes on the ground and onto Churley, giving him an extremely intimidating presence.

The linnorm roars and launches into a series of devastating blows - well, devastating to a lesser man. To Churley, they individually barely even faze.

Beauty of this is (from the PRD:
Unless otherwise noted, performing a combat maneuver provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of the maneuver. If you are hit by the target, you take the damage normally and apply that amount as a penalty to the attack roll to perform the maneuver.

So the trip is only a 41, which fails to trip.

The first disarm works, then the second has to be a steal, which works as well.

However I do have called property on the adamantine chakram, so as a swift action on my turn I can call it back to my hand even if held by another.

I think it will likely come down to who wins initiative. Your AC is so high that I'll have a nasty time hitting you, and I've got regeneration to keep me alive. If I don't get a turn before you I don't expect to live long enough to get one.
