After listening to the plan and everyone intentions Belor chimes in
"As much fun as it would be to visit a place as wonderous as the city of brass, I plan to stay aboard the ship with Aiesha and Beaufort. With any luck you may be back before we even reach the shackles. If not then we are more than capable of handling them on our own. Just do me one favor. Be sure to bring me back a souvenir."

With Belor's decision to remain behind on the ship and continue the trip to the Shackles, Sparel is ready to take the rest of the volunteers with him to the Plane of Fire. He casts his preparatory spells, ensuring that he and his pirate compatriots won't burn to a crisp immediately, and then casts plane shift.

Features around the travelers blur vertically, the colours and textures from each object around a central line blurring upwards and downwards to obscure everything else. Then the travelers' circle of hands begins to spin, and the travelers feel themselves hurled skyward, spinning at breakneck pace and flying in a random direction, the scenery around them a rainbow blur.

To Belor and the others remaining on the ship, he merely sees his crew members becoming enveloped in a multicolored wash of colour and disintegrating, though.

Just a few moments into their dizzying journey, the travelers are thrown to the ground in their destination. The ground beneath them is charred and black, and the sky above is devoid of a sun, but casts bright light as fiery red clouds drift beneath a sky latticed with a spiderweb of glowing magma.

Standing up, the travelers find themselves atop a shallow gnoll. It would be a sandbar on a more hospitable plane, sitting in the middle of a river. Instead, here, it is a small spot of obsidian rising out of a slow-moving river of lava. In the distance rises an immense mountain range entirely made of volcanoes, their summits spouting smoke and ash constantly and rivers of lava flowing down their sides. The party sits in the foothills of these very volcanoes, the landscape around them clearly an upward slope towards the range. "Growing" around the "banks" of the river of lava around the travelers is a "forest" of jagged obsidian trees, each tree no more than thirty feet high and each branch sharp and black. The air is thick, muggy, and burns the throat with each breath, ash infiltrating the breathers' mouths with each intake.

The sudden appearance of the travelers spurs quick bouts of movement in the forests around them, little flashes of red, and brown, and black scurrying away from the party.

Despite all of the discomfort, none of you are in pain due to Sparel's abjurations, and Tar'jub is almost reminded of home.

Lu eyes her new surroundings with suspicion, quickly circling the party as she does. That she went with thick-soled boots instead of the sandals that ordinary accopanied her summertime outfit seemed as a wise choice as embers and sharp rocks were imprinted by her footsteps. When her survey was done, she nodded to herself and snorted. A bit curious she tried to break away a branch from the closes obsidian "three" as she passed her judgement.

"Zis is clearly not ze City of Brass. Or else ze denizens are tiny tiny fire-ants and if so, I doubt we could read zeir scrolls anyhow ... So which way?"

She looks around one more time, squinting to see if there are anytell-tale skyline on the horizon. With a snort she realizes the futility of that, with the volcanoes and smoke and all and instead focuses on more intermediate matters. Like the foul-smelling aroma of this world. With one final snort she fishes out a lightly perfumed scarf from her belt pouch and ties it over her mouth.

Back at the Ship

Lima: The halfling stands in slack-jawed awe and confusion as the party disappears in a blast of colours. In her arms she clutches Lu's discarded fur-coat, clinging to the remnants of her normal life. Finally she blinks and looks down and up again.

"Wwaah?"

Tris: The tall woman in the emerald dress seemed much less impressed by the spectacle. But in truth, it was her lifetime in Nidal that had taught her to reflexively suppress tells and signs of emotion. Despite what she would later claim, she was no expert on planar travel. With one raised eyebrow and crossed arms she looked down on the halfling servant.

"It is supposed to look like that. Trust me."

Sparel surveys the surroundings a moment.

Taking a few rounds he casts a spell (find the path).

Then he starts a much longer spell (10 min. Phantom chariot)

A heavy chariot pulled by four jet black steeds rides in from the ether. With a flick of his wrist Sparel opens the door and folds the step down to allow entry to the inside.

"the city is that way (point). I can't teleport as I've never been. However, there's no reason we can't travel in style, not to mention fast. I know the way, but would anyone else care to drive? If not I'll take care of it. "

Phantom chariot - I'm one level too low for the thing to fly, but it's got a land speed of 100'. Mud, sand, or water will pose no issue. It can air walk for one round at a time. Should make for a fast trip.

back at the ship

Ringwald looks at the spot his halter is no linger standing. His jaw slacks slightly in a look of surprise. Then the little mephit crosses his arms and looks thoroughly dejected.

With a huff he pushes off his feet and zips up to the crowd nest leaving a very temporary corkscrew vapor trail in his wake.

The Plane of Fire: Hottest in the Multiverse!

Lu grins as the chariot arrives, clearly pleased.

"Now zis is travel in style!"

I looked it up, and it seems as if chariots are driven by Handle Animal or Profession (Driver). Lu can get an untrained modifier of +9 on the former, plus perhaps Derring-Do if leinathan feels that it should be applicable on such a manoeuvre ^^ However, it kindof feels off to use Handle Animals on something that in essence is a construct of magic - so perhaps a diffirent skill should be used (like Spellcraft/Know(Arcana) for most magical vehicles ?

The spell doesn't say, but it works like a normal chariot. I assume it's a ride check.

That's okay - no checks necessary, drive checks will only be a thing in cases of dire trouble.

Everyone piles into Sparel's carriage, the head of which Sparel takes. The carriage is sumptuous and comfortable on the inside, and the "horses" make not a sound as they hop the molten river that the party found themselves on the inside of. Then the horses take off at high speed down the bank of the river, up the sides of the volcanoes (as directed by Sparel). They follow a snaking blue cord that runs from Sparel to, presumably, the City of Brass.

Running up the side of the mountain is easy for horses that never tire, and the fact that they have a limited ability to glide comes in handy because the side of the volcanoes that they climb run periodically with rivers of lava, which the carriage must hop.

At 2,000 feet/minute, it's a 472 minute journey to your destination. That is just shy of eight hours, if I'm not mistaken.

Fire on the mountain run boys run...

A short way into the trip Sparel looks like he's thinking especially hard.

A little over 4 hours into the trip Sparel recasts the planar protection spell. (from cleric list).

"We have a problem. The planar protection spell is going to end about half an hour outside of the City of Brass. I'll need to open a magnificent mansion portal so we can rest and I can prepare the spell again. It's high magic and I only have so many per day. Having to split the duration among this many makes it that much shorter. After I rest we'll have several hours within the city to locate our prize. If it comes right down to it I can planeshift us back to the prime, but when we planeshift back to the plane of fire we run the risk of being nowhere near the city again. Of course now that I've been here I'll be able to teleport closer."

"I don't suppose any of you have a way to make yourself fireproof for a long duration?" Sparel asks quizzically

Tar' Jub is Fireproof, right? I'm doing the math as if he's excluded. If not we'll need to stop earlier.

Indeed Tar'jub is immune to fire.

The Prime Material Plane

The airship soars through the air, bereft of the weight of several of its crew members. As it nears the Shackles, Aiesha brings the contraption higher and higher into the air, and it's increasingly recommended for Tris and Vimes to remain below deck, as the air is getting too thin to appropriately hang out on deck (for the mortals, at least. Belor is fine.)

Soaring over the Shackles themselves, Vimes speaks up at a quick team meeting with the other two. "So," he says, "If you'll be wanting central Shackles, you'll be wanting Port Peril. That's the capital of the Shackles and the home of the current Hurricane King. If you don't want to go there, there are a few other settlements, but the rest is mostly just coves and havens for ships."

I need the wild arcana to summon the magnificent Mansion. If I do use it for another planar adaptation it only buys us about 4 hours. Perhaps enough time for our purposes.

Watching Lu and eyeing the potion a moment sparel hands it back.
"Useful tricks, but not to solve our immediate dilemma. I think the best route may be to cast the planar protection spell one final time. When this duration runs out we'll have to return to the prime. Getting back to this spot will be easier next time. We can teleport as I have now been here. "

Sparel summons his mythic nature to cast planar adaptation one last time for the day.

Upon reaching the outskirts of the city (a hill overlooking the gates or something) Sparel takes as long as needed to thoroughly study the spot making notation of every geographical feature possible.

Unless something prevents it I think we head to the gates of the city of brass.

Tris gives the former captain a thoughtful nod. She had vent over the nautical charts Lu brought with her and looked at their potential courses and destinations together with Lima just a few hours earlier. They weren't that accurate in their representation of the Shackles however, such charts where hard to come by - especially in Cheliax. I should have taken the opportunity when they anchored back in Nidal... Instead of lamenting on opportunities long lost the sorceres focuses on the future instead and pulls up one semi-accurate chart on the table and expertly points her finger to Port Peril. She smiled. The others didn't have to know Lima had pointed out its location to her. And given her a small rundown ...

Perhaps we should choose a smaller port where we can act more freely?" And not have some "King" watch over our shoulders!

Speaking of things preventing it....

Thus protected, the carriage continues on as far as it can. Unfortunately, the horses grind to a halt. Ahead of them, and preventing them from continuing (for a few seconds of walking on air can't get them across) is a vast lake of lava. It is, in fact, so vast that the other end of the lake cannot actually be seen, but plumes of smoke rising from the horizon past the city of Brass, as well as the fact that the volcanoes continue from the range that the party passed over around them to either side and out of sight, hint that the entire circumference of the lava lake is bordered by volcanoes.

Speaking of the City, it rests in the center of the lake of lava, resting atop a thick brass disc, its edge going nearly to the horizon, its stone and iron and brass buildings nearly a hundred times as numerous as those in the city of Absalom. In the center of the city, around which everything else is built, is a huge domed tower, made entirely of brass, its pointy spire reaching a thousand feet into the air. A few hundred feet above the spire is a false sun - a yellow ball of light a dozen feet across that casts enough light to light the city to a dim level even on the smokiest of days.

Lu steps off the chariot and leans over the edge (carefully!). "Right. Floating city!"

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

There are also no walls, no gates, no physical barriers preventing access to the City itself - the city's buildings and roads go to the very edge of the disc. There is, however, a dome of immaterial, glowing white particulates that covers the entire airspace of the city. The dome is subtle enough to be unobtrusive to the skyline but visible enough that it's clear that it's no mirage.

There are also a lot of efreet flying about in the airspace of the City, although they don't seem to be border guards or anything, as there's also the occasional flying traveler coming to or leaving the city, usually alone, and usually some other fire elemental creature.

Demographics of the city are impossible to determine from here, though - any figures are pretty small. There's about 2,000 feet of distance between the volcanoes' cliff faces and the edge of the brass disc.

Sparel dismisses the current Chariot and creates a new one. The new one can fly really really fast. :-)

There is no such bridge leading into the city, and there doesn't appear to be a centralized place for visitors. At least, not from where Sparel stands. He can't see 2/3rds of the border of the city, after all, and it would be many miles of traveling to be able to circumnavigate the city.

Several efreeti fly close to the chariot as it passes through the white threshold of the city, their eyes fixed judgmentally on the flying contraption as their red eyes twinkle against their muscular faces. Then, after a few moments of thoughtful inspection, they peel away, other matters on their minds.

As soon as the chariot passes through the white barrier, though, the atmosphere becomes noticeably cooler. Any ash residue in the air is immediately dispelled, and sightlines become clearer as the ambient smog falls away. It's fairly clear that the inside of the city is particularly less dangerous than the rest of the Plane of Fire. Perhaps it's actually safe for non-fire-immune peoples.

Flying over the metropolis, it's clear that this is a city the likes of which none of you have ever seen. Every building is built to the proportions of giants, for it was the efreet that built it, and there are districts for everything imaginable. Brothel districts, inn districts, smithy districts, housing districts, diplomacy districts...and the trade market. It's a massive circle full of tents and kiosks and full shops, members of every race hawking their wares. And the size of it! It must be the area of Magnimar, with twice the population, the population as eclectic as anywhere you've ever seen. The only populations not present here are those that have no hope of surviving anywhere on the Plane of Fire - water elementals, ice giants, white dragons, etc. But fire giants, fire mephits, efreeti and fire elementals are all native to the Plane, and dragons, shaitan, demons and devils of all sorts, azata, agathions, angels, axiomites, proteans, and Prime Material creatures of all kinds trade here. Elves, humans, gnomes, orcs are all represented, and countless tiny fey of the First World are here too.

Flying over the city, also, there is an evident stablery area, with large platterlike landing areas for flying creatures and flying vehicles, and large storage areas below for the travelers' mounts to stay.

Lu and the others also see another large courtyard of some extreme interest - there is a huge open, round area bordered by half a dozen 75-foot tall arches, each arch filled with rippling walls of energy, each wall a window into a vastly different landscape. Clearly half a dozen gates, connected to other planes for easier travel.

With her keen eyes filled with wonder Lu studied the city below them like a gastronome at a banquette. She was a bit curious about the faë - they had been rare in the swamp she crew up in, and rarer still in Cheliax. But they had other matters to attend to first! Like that scroll. And ...

"Let us start with ze Portals! It might make it easier to get here, noh? If zey have ze right one for ze right price ..."

Without waiting for a proper response Lu steers the aerial wagon towards the arches and swoops by close. She is interested to see if she recognizes the landscapes of anyone - or if there appears to be some sort of toll attached to them. She frowned. She didn't like tolls. Then she rather have Sparel teleport them around.

"Now that I've been here once it'll be considerably easier to get back. Seconds even. "

Sparel attempts to determine where the portals are going and what spell may be in use, though he suspects he knows.

Planes 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (3) + 20 = 23
Spell craft 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (12) + 25 = 37

Also, I'd like to see if I can determine if the city is safe without the planar protection. Not sure what I roll for that.

"Good. I wouldn't want to wait in line for zose!" she laughs and steers the chariot away from the portals as soon as the mage has finished his survey. She looks around once more and circles to get a better view of the city. Then she sets course for the trade districts - her grin growing with anticipation.

City of Brass (and maybe my dreams)
"This would make an excellent location for a retirement home, especially if we can make it less lethal to get here. But anyway back to the matter at hand Lu bring us down somewhere nice, Tarjub try not to get into any trouble for now, if you do well we might buy you a slave for your good behavior."

If you're not sure how to check, I don't think that I can tell you. You've got about three in-game hours to find out.

On the other hand, the six gates correspond to Axis, The Abyss, Hell, Elysium, Heaven, and The First World. Each is labelled (in Ignan), and Sparel is able to remember what each of them are if not the specific facts about them and all of their inhabitants.

Once we land Sparel gets out of the chariot with a curious look on his face. He then casts a spell to summon a light riging horse (Mount using mythic power). He then casually observes the effects of the plane on what is for all intents and purposes a standard horse.

Basically I summoned a horse to see if was damaged in any way by being in the city without protection. :-)

The horse is not, in fact, burning to death. It doesn't even seem to be uncomfortable. Clever!

"Zey probably have a really good hot spa around here too!" Lu remarks to the retirement comment. Meanwhile she watches Spa's horse experiment with curiosity. When nothing really happens she nods and remarks in a wry voice. "Always nice to watch a master working heh. Now, shall we take the pony to ze market square?"

"If you like. It'll last for most of the day. More importantly though it looks like we don't need the planar protection spell while within the city. I'm sure we have the board of tourism to thank for that. We're not in as much of a hurry I had initially thought. "

Thanks.

"We need to look for someone selling high level scrolls."

Sparel looks around. Is there a barker or "you are here" map? If nothing else I'm going to go to the nearest merchant and ask.

"Maybe we should procure that guide we discussed yes?" Lu looks around after someone that doesn't seem too important, someone she could grab out of the crowd ...

Ask what? And where are you?

We landed near the bazaar. I believe.

Indeed, I think so too. Lu was looking around to see if there was someone unimportant looking around that she could grab by the shoulder and ask to "take us to ze scroll market!"

The party lands in one of many smaller circles of trade - this one apparently for exotic and expensive jewellery, and attended by many different personas - lovers seeking gifts, nobles seeking ornaments, thieves seeking a target, and so on.

Just as soon as the party lands, a tiny red creature reminiscent of an imp but with larger wings and a punier frame, and without the horns, lands right in front of the carriage. The creature has a brass choker around its neck, a tiny bell jingling on the front. It bows deeply, and intones what is clearly a very practiced message. "The Grand Sultan Hakim Khalid Sulieman, the Twenty-Third of his name, welcomes you personally to the City of Brass!"

Looking around, it's clear that most of the guests of the city (that is to say, non-efreeti) have an accompanying mephit (for that's what these are - fire or magma mephits) with them, guiding and following them around, offering chittering advice or warnings. The mephit in front of all of you continues, though, despite wandering eyes. "He hopes that you enjoy your stay, and has sent myself, a trusted servant, to ensure that you avoid lawbreaking and find what you are looking for! You may call me Wazi. How can this one help you?"

"The sultan has my thanks a hundred fold." Sparel says sounding very formal. "He shows great wisdom in sending emissaries to visitors. For my task it will aid me greatly."

He continues sounding far less formal. "You have my thanks as well, little one. I have no idea how I was going to find what I seek without a guide. That being said I see a purveyor of powerful spells. Scrolls specifically if possible. "

Edit: "Almost as an afterthought. You may call me Master Radtymah. These are my companions who will give you their own names if they wish."
