"Insolent little creature... 'look after us so we don't break any law' *Grumblegrumble*" Lu mutters under her breath. Her mood soured by the fact that their personal guide, while helpful, would prevent her from engaging in some good old-fashioned shakedown. *Sigh* It has been a while! "I'm sure those are the sultan's words and not the mephits. I'm sure it know how unhealthy that would be for it." Sparel says as a consolidation to Lu, but also a thinly veiled threat to the Mephit.

The mephit bows deeply and nods at Sparel. "Yes! You'll be wanting the Great Fire Library of Arcanae. Right this way, masters." and then he turns and waddles along down the street, continually beckoning behind him for the party to follow him and turning around every few steps to ensure that they're all there.

He leads them through countless other circles of market, past crowds and shoppers of all sorts and kinds, the majority of which are significantly taller and/or broader than any of the medium-sized pirate crew members. Fire giants and efreet are the most populous members of the city.

It takes about an hour to get through the crowds and to the Great Fire Library, which is a massive, large-proportioned, red-columned brass building. Two-and-a-half foot stairs lead up to a pair of massive, open double doors bound in steel and forged of brass. Just inside is a desk manned by a bored-looking tiefling woman wearing eyeglasses and scholarly robes, leafing through a booklet. She looks up when the pirates enter and raises an eyebrow. "The nature of your inquiry?" she asks.

"I'd check in Arcane Conjuration, to your left," she responds, returning to her booklet and gesturing off to her right. On either side of her are different wings of the library, one apparently for divine magic and the other for arcane magic. Behind her (behind the desk, that is) is a staircase leading up to another, higher level of the library. Each of the wings are divided into circle and school, and the bookshelves must be thirty feet high. The aisles, too, are about a hundred feet long and the bookshelves contain a mixture of spellbooks, lore books, and scrolls, each meticulously organized and maintained.

Frequent ladder placement allows access to the higher bookshelves, although many of the ladders and creaky and apparently treacherous.

Looking in Arcane Conjuration, it quickly becomes clear that they don't have the spell that you're looking for. Or, indeed, any spell above 7th-level (and there are only a few of the seventh circle - plane shift notably not among them).

It was *awkward* to wander along the streets and halls of the larger folk. She wasn't used to feel so small. I mean, this form isn't that tall of a human but ... And she certainly didn't like the way some of them looked down on her - like they were annoyed to find her underfoot. She had to bite her tongue several times not to curse or threaten any especially smug giant. She couldn't help but to think that this must certainly be the world every day for her servant. I'll have to stop wearing my stompy boots around Lima or she'll die of stress soon. The somewhat comic thought lifted her spirit a bit.

Lu's eyes narrowed. This was the third spellbook she had checked to no avail. With hurried annoyance she slammed the book closed and put it back on the shelf.

"Damnation. Anyone else feel like ze Guild of Real Estate Agents and the Travel Company has conspired togezer to keep all ze juicy spells out of our hands?"

She turns around and looks back towards the reception.

"Or are zey simply upstairs ..."

Very well perhaps we should avoid making a show, at the very least until we have more strength to show. We need to be careful. If word gets around about our flying ship we may become a target from men like the Hurricane King. Perhaps we should avoid setting down in any port and should travel in by other means?

Before speaking Sparel reaches over and slowly closes her book even as she reads it.
Through gritted teeth he speaks very slowly and enunciates himself. He's not yelling, but is cleary annoyed.

Calmly and in low tones. Still looking her dead in the eye.

"I'm sorry to say," says the librarian, "But the conversation of an hour of your time is not of paramount importance to me." When Sparel turns away, she picks up her book again and resumes her bored look.

Sparel is met with a hurried diatribe from the mephit, who gesticulates wildly as he speaks, "Many regions of the city require special permissions from city officials if you wish to enter. Special permissions indicate that you are a credit to the city's infrastructure or functioning. Services for the Sultan or his Viziers, as are available, may be performed for permissions. Special performers who live long enough to excite the crowd often in the Coliseum may receive them. They may be received for a significant enough gift or a big enough blow to the dastardly djinni. Then continues to the Mephit.
"Presumably there is a list of such tasks somewhere? If so please show us to it. It not please direct us to someone who knows what things may constitute service to the city. Also, go fetch the captain from the roof. We've got options to discuss. We'll meet you out front. "

Following party consensus, there is a little caravan, led by their fire mephit guide, out of the trade district and into the palace district.

The palace district sits in the center of the city, and comprises the massive, thousand-foot-high palace itself, along with hundreds of feet of wide, open brass courtyard surrounding them. The courtyard is hemmed in by a circular, hundred-foot-high brass wall that surrounds the entire district. The wall is broken in many places by wide gates that seem to stand perpetually open but are all guarded by quartets of brass golems - 20-foot high brass statues built to resemble their efreet creators and holding huge curved brass swords. The golems stoically stand, looking out into the horizon.

The mephit leads you all in between four of the golems and into one of the gates, chattering the whole way about the pride that the genies possess regarding the knowledge of how to craft the huge brass monstrosities, a secret that no other race possesses.

The entrance arch of the palace itself is built to size and to impress, at least a hundred feet high and fifty feet wide, gleaming and pristine, and guarded by another quartet of brass golems. The receptionist is an efreet this time instead of a tiefling, and receives the news that the vizier has visitors silently and with barely a reaction, and tears off a tiny strip of paper for the fire mephit that reads "11,768". "The vizier will be with you in due time. Approach the desk when your number is called."

"Verily." Sparel says with a harumph."If this is what's required to provide something to the city can see how it such a rarity."

With a moment of inspiration Sparel says to his small group, "Lets see if we can make this trip noteworthy. Perhaps we can thin out the group or find some crew members."

With that Sparel Pushes himself to his feet and goes to talk to the humans.

"Good day, Gentlemen/Ladies(As appropritate). Nice to see more primes around that I expected. We seem to have some time, so I thought I'd make an attempt to be friendly. Perhaps we can chat to pass the time and if fortune smiles perhaps we can find some common ground for mutual assistance. Allow me to start. I am Sparel Radtymah. Whom do I have the pleasure of speaking."

Remember "-Mah" is a title for an elven high mage. They may or may not know that.

Also, I'm basically going to try and determine if I can either thin the people waiting (one way or another) and/or gauge if these people would be good crew members. All of this while wearing a friendly helpful face.

Against my better judgement here's a Diplomacy roll.

Diplomacy 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Edit: Eh. Not bad. Hopefully there are some situational modifiers, such as their boredom.

Approaching the pair of humans, Sparel notices something strange once he gets close enough to get a good look. The skin and hair of the humans he approaches are devoid of all colour, and their skin is an unnatural sheen of grey. Their eyes lack pupils , gray irises sitting empty in their eyes. Both of them are decked out in adventurers' gear - what appear to be handy haversacks sitting on their backs, weapons at their belts, a plethora of magical items bedecking their bodies - even an ioun stone orbiting one of their heads. One of them is a male and the other a female.

One of the azers actually appears to be with them. The azer carries a staff on its back and wears what appear to be wizards' robes. The azer is a male.

The man flicks its eyes at Sparel - not even turning his head to acknowledge the mage's existence. "My name is Yetar, and these are Zilfiena and Glomrin." he responds, motioning to the woman and the azer with him. "Did you want something, or are you just looking for...small talk?"

From the looks of you you're adventures, Yes? As am I and my crew. I've come from the prime to get a powerful scroll with which to upgrade our ship. Now I find myself in a position where we have to do some duty or other for the city to even be allowed into the correct sections of the city that might have what I seek. It's quite annoying really, though I'm trying to be patient. I suspect perhaps you're in a similar situation? "

"Regardless, depending on what your next step is I may have opportunity for employment if it's determined that our goals are aligned."

"So yes, Small talk would be a good place to start for a few reasons. In that vein, I've told you why I'm here. What plane do you normally adventure on and what brings you here today? "

The fetchling turns to face Sparel head-on, taking a quick note of the gesture that Praetorius makes - clearly threatening - before he responds. "Umbral dragons."

He waits a moment before he spots the look of confusion on Sparel's face, and he clarifies. "What do you think of umbral dragons? What's your opinion of them?"

The fetchling doesn't seem like he's listening for the majority of Sparel's tirade, a bored and indifferent look on his face. The female seems to take her cues from him, looking at him and then adopting the same look on his face. At Sparel's mention of "aligned goals", however, the fetchling re-tunes his attention to Sparel, actually turning to face him. The fetchling takes a quick note of Praetorius' threatening papa-stance and then flicks his deep, dark eyes back to Sparel. "One question. Umbral dragons."

"What do you think of them?"

"Hmm" Tris pokes the map. "Maybe we ought to simply head for the closest port first - and take it from there. That should be Bloodcove right?"

Alkenstar is straight to the east from the Shackles, so Bloodcove should be both close-ish and a bit away from the Eye - so we don't get sucked into that whirlwind o'trouble just yet :)

"Umbral Dragons as a species I have no opinion of as I have never dealt with them. It would depend on the specific dragon and if we need to work with them or against them. Why? Are you working for or against one?"

"Neither." he says, turning away from Sparel. "I have no opinion on you, and it depends on whether I am working with or against you. Umbral dragons, on the other hand, deserve to be wiped from the face of the Shadow Plane. If that interests me, you should come find me after our meetings with the vizier. If not, go about your business and bother me no more."

[b]"You should work on your sales pitch or at least be less of my b*$!% about it. Enjoy getting eaten by a dragon. "[\b]

Sparel turns away from the unpleasant little man and speaks to Prateorious not caring if the man can hear him. [b]"I'm increasingly beginning to understand why everyone here is so unpleasant. Endless bureracy to get anything done. I too am done trying to be friendly. Let's do what we must, get our scroll and get the hell out of here. All they would have to have done is act with a modicum of decorum and I may have been able to help them. I could have been an umbrella dragon slaying specialist for all they know. Bah! The arena is looking more and more like out best option. "[\b]

"Eaten by a dragon?" Lu looks up from her resting spot. "I saw someone being eaten by a dragon once. Partially anyway. Zere was blood everywhere!"

She doesn't sound overly bothered by the fact, treating it more like an interesting trivia. He tasted horrible too. All that plate and chain and the *stench*! Bleh. The medium-sized woman springs from the bench and approaches the fetchlings with wide eyes.

"Did a Umbral Dragon eat one of your lot? Is zat why you want to slay zem?"

Perhaps to make them uneasy enough to second-guess their interaction with Spa. And because she can.

Imperiously, the fetchling puffs out his chest and stands up straight, throwing out his chin and lording his height over Lu. "Umbral dragon overlords have held sway over my people ever since we fled the Great Catastrophe eons ago."

You may have finally flipped a switch, for he begins to face and monologue, "Our settlements have flourished upon the Plane of Shadows for thousands of years, and have done so since the beginning of our presence, but we have also been oppressed by those who would see our communities as opportunities to profit and to exercise their over-important senses of self."

"So, yes," he says finally, amping back down again, "Umbral dragons have eaten many of my lot. And I'm done with it."

Sparel turns, suddenly interested again.

"Have you tried firearms? I hear if you get enough of them even a relatively unskilled force can take one down fairly quickly."

"How terrible!" Lu replies in mock horror before jumping back to morbid curiosity. "And now you are going to kill zem all. How?"

Sorry for the short reply - duty calls :)

Thinking out loud Sparel continues

"There's also a dust, well it's more a product of poor item crafting. Anyway. The dust will disable any creature, dragons included for at least thirty seconds. All you'd have to do is have a few people at the ready to cut its throat or something equally unpleasant. "
