Actually, I agree with your interpretation. I didn't think about the targeted allies vs. enemies wordings of the two spells.
2d20 ⇒ (12, 3) = 15
The red-horned creature seems to be unaffected by Chusynd's bane, but ol' blue is baned!
Toshi Ibi |
That's... actually a really poorly-coded spell. I could see a hardcore argument based on a "There's no 'targets' setting; why would Selective Fireballs exist if you can just pick the bads out of a crowd?," ideology. Intent is pretty obvious, but dat 3.5 copy paste. It looks like either the actual intent was the "nobody keep attacking' result OR someone looked at Bless and not Bane. Looks like it was the same in 3.5, too. Neat.

Thought much the same thing when Signboy brought it up — couldn't really argue much if that was the GM's ruling cos it's ambiguous as all get-out as it's written.
Signboy77 |
So, just read through a thread (okay, I'll be honest, I didn't read everything). I'm sticking with my ruling, even though it seems that most commentors (I didn't notice anyone official) seems to think that the two spells would essentially cancel each other out. But, I didn't see any reference to the spells being cast by the same caster (or ally) - but I don't know if that actually makes a difference.
Senjin Alatriste |
Fort save 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
2 points of Wis damage to Senjin.
Hearing that the creature he was fighting couldn't see him any longer, Senjin drops to the ground, and moves to climb up after the southern most creature next round.
Signboy77 |
Thanks for your patience. Things have been busy at work and I've been struggling to keep up.
The swarm of monkeys disappears, taking the creatures' weapons with them. The blue demon crawls down to try and sting Darvik. It manages to dodge the fighter's sword, but takes a hit from the shield.
Sting, Bane: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 7 - 1 = 18
The red demon, being blind wails a terrible scream of frustration. In its frustration, it tries to give chase, climbing down the statue (spider climb) and trying to lash it's tongue out at whatever creature is nearby.
1d3 ⇒ 1
Sting vs Roscoe, Bane: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 7 - 1 = 9
Both demons are unable to have any effect at all.
Red (Blind, 4) Blue (1)
Party Up!
Both creatures are on ground level.

Did my 'Produce Flame' damage the Blue creature?
Round 3 Bless
Roscoe takes a 5 ft step back and casts Shillelagh on his sling staff ...
Senjin Alatriste |
Senjin lashes out with twin kicks at the closest monster, still using Pummeling Style.
Attack One 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Attack Two 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Signboy77 |
Sorry, Roscoe. I missed that.
Roscoe's flame, though clearly hitting his intended target, doesn't seem to have any effect on the creature at all - simply singing a few hairs harmlessly.
Crit didn't confirm, you could see that it has some resistance to fire.
Darvik Willowbrook |
Darvik continues to assault the creature that tried to sting him!
Scimitar: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 1 = 27 for Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Shield: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 1 = 19 for Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Scimitar Confirm?: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 1 = 11 for Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Khamûl Unqualë |
Khamul tries to shoot a ray at the non-blinded one.
ray of sickening
ranged touch: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 3 - 4 = 5
DC 15 Fort save or sickened for 4 minutes.
Toshi Ibi |
Toshi probably misses again! This time, he uses two hands (since nobody seems in danger of needing Feather Fall)!
Longsword (vs flat): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 221d8 ⇒ 31d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Longsword confirm: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d8 ⇒ 71d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
"Oh! I can see why the Brute Squadron members were so intent on large weapons. It was so they could not forget to use two hands, because one does not work nearly as well." Toshi nods.
Signboy77 |
Senjin and Toshi both viciously attack the the blinded demon, almost killing the creature, but the demon is just able to withstand their attacks and lives on. In fact, he seems to regenerate a bit of his health.
Meanwhile, Darvik's cold iron scimitar cuts deeply into the other demon, though his shield seems to be ineffectual. This one also regenerates some of his health. Chusynd reloads his crossbow while Roscoe grants himself a much bigger stick and Khamul throws magical rays at the walls.
The demons try to lash out with their tongues.
1d4 ⇒ 4
The blind demon lashes out in Darvik's direction.
Sting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Darvik is able to easily bat the tongue away with his shield.
The not-blind demon tries to sting Chusynd.
Sting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
DC 12 Fort Save or take 1d2 ⇒ 2 Will damage.
Red (15, Blind) Blue (10)
Party UP!
Chusynd Karkota |
Chusynd is unable to avoid the demonic tongue!
DC 12 Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
I presume that's Wisdom damage, GM? Something Chusynd didn't have much of to spare... ;-)
Also, no one identified these things, I don't think? So Chusynd wouldn't know which weapon to draw.
The shock of the hit makes him drop the newly-loaded crossbow in his hands! He looks at it dejectedly, then pulls his 1 silver mace, 2 cold iron sickle: 1d2 ⇒ 2 and five-foots into flank with Darvik to attack!
attack!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
damage!: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
confirm?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Round 4 Bless; Shillelagh
Roscoe moves to attack the blue demon with his Shillelagh ...
Shillelagh: 1d20 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 24 for bludgeoning: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Confirm: 1d20 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 5 Not Confirmed
Then George will attack as well ...
Claw: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4 for Slashing: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Claw: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 1 = 13 for Slashing: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Bite: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 2 + 1 = 22 for Piercing: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Senjin Alatriste |
Senjin will move to Attack any of the monsters still standing.
Bless Attack 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 1 = 21
Damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Darvik Willowbrook |

Small Shield: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 2 = 17 for Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Khamûl Unqualë |
Khamul casts a spell and his pale hands grow icy cold. He moves up to the blue creature and tries to smack it!
frigid touch
melee touch attack: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 1 = 15
cold damage: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 5) = 11
And the target is staggered for 1 round (no save)
Signboy77 |
@Chusynd, yes - WIS damage.
Chusynd chooses his weapon wisely, scoring a solid (but not critical) hit on the blue demon. Roscoe then sidles up and smacks the same demon upside the head with his big stick, while George manages to bite the demon, giving just enough effort to bring the creature down.
Meanwhile, Senjin continues to pummel the blind demon, causing a little bit of damage. Darvik slams into it with his shield and Khamul moves around to give the demon a touch of frosty justice.
The demon wails at the touch of cold and lashes out ineffectually with his claws as he succumbs to his wounds and collapses on the floor of the temple.
End Combat.
As the demons fall, a stillness settles on the party. With their senses returning to normal after the adrenaline rush of battle, the smell of rot becomes more apparent. Searching among the detritus of the temple floor, our Pathinders find some interesting treasure: a richly illuminated copy of the Vigrahin Patitraka (a Vudran holy text) worth 50 gp and a handwritten journal belonging to a priest who accompanied Khiben-Sald on his travels around the Inner Sea.
Also, you notice that around the waist of the statue of Ragdya is a monkey belt (how apropos)
Upon returning to Absalom, VC Valsin is especially thrilled by the journal that recounts Khiben-Sald's travels. "Oh, there is much to be learned in here! You've managed to do a lot of good for the Society on this excursion." He brings his gaze up from the journal to yours, "So, did you get along with the Baron and the Count?"
End of Scenario. Feel free to roleplay anything out. I'm pretty sure everyone's posted their pertinent info in the discussion page, but double check that it's all correct. I'll have this reported by the end of the day and will have the chronicles posted either tonight or tomorrow.
Senjin Alatriste |
Senjin waited for the others to answer the question. He didn't want to give his opinion on those two "great hunters." As he became more experienced, if it were up to him, the Society would not deal with trash such as that.
Khamûl Unqualë |
Khamul sighs and leans on his scythe as the last creature falls. "Well, I believe that means the temple is ours and I'm sure this place is ripe for discovery. Let's head back and let the superiors know."
Khamul is friendly and relaxed on the way back and reports in to Valsin right away. "Thank you, we did our best. I believe the local primate population appreciated us as well. The Baron and the Count were gracious hosts and I think we left having made a good impression."

Chusynd Karkota |
Chusynd smiles at the Venture-Captain's question. Of course, of course! The nobles were only too pleased with our presence — pleased enough to give us unfettered access to the temple, wherein we found...what were those things, anyway, Khamûl? He ponders a moment, then continues. We did our best to give a good impression of the Society to Baron Rudyahm and his new son-in-law, Count Matsanda. Didn't round up much coin for the Church of Aroden, though.. Hmm.
