Talvek has no problems following his nose to the door of the bakery.

***

Aldren and Lubella determine that Rexus, while ill, appears to be ok enough to make it back to the Longroads.

He smiles with a well meaning nod.
Yes, very well. I guess we are really all in this together now. You are the closest people I have to family now. Well, I better get back. See you there.

He departs with his cane and package in hand.

***

Lubella does not see any other customers in the shop.

Greetings! I am the owner of this shop, Maercin Kelimber. If you are friends of Rexus', you are welcome any time.

After a short bow and nod, he pauses to look at you both, obviously studying your gear and clothes.

Well, let us see. You do not appear to be students or aristocrats. Can I help you find anything, more...out of the ordinary? he smiles.

I try to keep my store well stocked with many of the common adventuring supplies, including alchemical gear and minor magic items. Unfortunately, since the new city leadership, I rarely have any items of significance to sell.

Aldren looks briefly offended with the judgment he’s not an aristocrat — Look at my clothing, you horser! — and is about to snap off a retort until the man follows up with the invitation for something less than ordinary. Now, he’s all smiles. ”I don’t need much at the moment but it’s a shame your sales have slid. I’ll definitely be back in the future. In the meantime... I don’t suppose you’ve any rum?”

I'm presuming that he didn't say anything when Lubella mentioned the murders.

"Well, I do need a better backpack, but I don't have enough money with me at the moment," Lubella replied. She had look at the halfling sized packs anyways.

She's looking to buy a masterwork backpack at some point.

Rebels Map

He has the MW backpack. He did not say anything about the murders.

I am sorry, but rum is one thing I do not carry. Alchemical supplies and ingredients like I sell Rexus for his health problems would be the closest I have. You would be better off finding rum at a local pub.
I would recommend Clenchjaw’s, although it used to be a quiet, friendly tavern, the recent loss the Thrashing Badger, has resulted in Clenchjaw’s gaining a sudden influx of new customers, and the resulting “culture clash” has caused it to be less relaxed than usual.

Not much out of the ordinary happening at the bakery. The lunch crowd will be arriving in awhile. The bakers are hard at work, and seem to be content with Julessa's response for now.

Lubella finished inspecting the available wares, saying, "We really should be going now. I'll be back in the next few days to buy the pack."

Once they were outside, she commented, "He didn't seem to want to talk about the murders, did he? Anyway, I guess we should head to the Owl Bakery and join up with Julessa and Talvek."

Rebels Map

He definitely heard the question about the murders, but after a short pause, you could tell he was reluctant to say anything and changed the subject.

Unless there are any side trips, you are able to rendezvous at the Owl Bakery right around noon.

I will assume you five are all back together.

Lubella entered the Owl Bakery. She joined Talvek and Julessa, and told them that they had met up with Rexus.

"He's a bit under the weather. I didn't enquire too closely about whatever his condition is; he seemed reluctance to discuss it. He's off to the Long Roads now."

She looked around at the bakery, and nodded approvingly at the apparent quality of the baked goods. The aromas reminded her that it was lunch time, and she was ready to sample the different wares!

She is naturally expecting to pay for what she eats.

Talvek's face lights up as Julessa presents him with an entire basket of goodies. He follows her to her study and sits at the table, grinning as he takes another sniff at his plunder. "I left them at the temple of Shelyn, we hadn't found Rexus yet but they had some good leads. I understand their concern, but... my people are getting murdered. I care more about that, and I just couldn't waste any more time chasing down someone who might just be feeling under the weather. These are fantastic, by the way."

He takes another bite of the savoury tortilla, closely followed by a bite of the honey bread, chewing thoughtfully and appearing to thoroughly appreciate the taste and flavour. As he opens his mouth to speak again, footsteps sound in the corridor outside and Lubella joins them with news. Talvek gives Julessa a look and shrugs, as if to say "see? he was fine". Carefully wrapping the rest of the food to take with him, he retrieves a few coins from his pocket and puts them on the table and winks. "A donation for your bread wagon." Subtracted 5 gp from his inventory which Julessa can add to hers.

Turning to Lubella, he asks with a note of anxiety in his voice. "Are we heading to the Nursery again?"

Rebels Map

After lunch you are able to depart the bakery, well fed and eager for answers to the crimes plaguing the denizens of the Nursery.

As you (assumingly enter) the slum area, there are a few stares from upper windows or doors that close quickly when you look. Fear and distrust are tangible.

Talvek knows the area well enough to navigate back to the site of the last murder...the spot the tiefling, Zea, had revealed yesterday.

Other than it being a secluded side street, there is no obvious sight of any issue.

Pushing us along for a bit...any special plans or actions?

Lubella polished off the last of her mince pie and declared, "Delicious!" Feeling rejuvenated, she was ready to continue the investigation.

When they reached the murder site, she said, "I couldn't find any real clues when I looked here yesterday. Someone around here must have seen or heard something; the challenge is getting them to talk to us. Maybe they would be more likely to open up to Talvek. We would probably be best to let him introduce us."

She looked around to see what buildings nearby would have the best view of the location, and what residences might have been within earshot.

Aldren is somewhat indifferent on the pastries — he knows there isn’t a lick of alcohol in a single one of them and he already loaded up on sugar at the coffeehouse — but, with Rexus’s safety confirmed, he’s also eager to get to investigating the murders. Yet, on the way, he adds, ”Assuming we live through the day, anyone mind a trip to that pub the shopkeeper mentioned? Clenchjaws?”

Yet, once in the Devil’s Nursery, his affect becomes more subdued. Mailani said this place was fertile ground for the Faith. Oppression, suspicion, anger, resentment... She was right. The looks... the fear. A tinderbox. As they walk about, he asks, ”Was there anyone you spoke with who seemed less than forthcoming or helpful?” If they are found again, Aldren figures he could try to charm the person.

Otherwise, he tries to assist Talvek with gathering information.

Returning to the murder site near the south wall turns up nothing new. However, Talvek is able to speak to several of the locals, and between promises and pressure, backed by Aldren, he uncovers some useful information.

One elderly tiefling woman steps out of her cramped apartment.

You are the boy of Pella, so I will tell you this. The tieflings of the Devil’s Nursery are on edge, and most will go out of their way to avoid speaking to strangers. she says the last part looking at Aldren.

But then she smiles with a knowing grin and continues.

Grelda I am. And I will show you children the locations of all the murders.

If you are willing, she leads you to five different allies or secluded areas in the slums. Here, and here and here are where they were cut down in their prime. Yes! Always alone, and none escaped to say who attacked them.

After spending 1d4 ⇒ 1 hours in the slums, she has led you to each of the spots, although there appears to be no evidence at the sites.

She finishes with a simple explanation. Each of the bodies was carefully cremated to prevent diseases of the worldly kind...or the unworldly kind. Undead could ravage our homes, and the Thrune would not raise a finger to stop it.

One of the things his training as a sacred courtesan had taught Aldren was there were times to be dominant...and times to be submissive. He bows his head low, staying behind Talvek to let him take the lead. He says only, "Mistress Grelda, your kin are wise to be distrustful of strangers, though I hope I can help Talvek, son of Pella, find vengeance for the victims and bring peace to their families, should you wish it."

As the morbid tour continues, Aldren considers the news. Five murders!? All tieflings in places with low visibility. Burning the bodies, no evidence.

"Mistress Grelda, Talvek, please forgive me any disrespect, but whoever is killing these poor souls is a coward. The plane-touched are fierce and dangerous. To strike them when alone, out of sight of others, in secluded places... well, I'd like nothing more than to bring an end to such a miserable and loathsome existence. Perhaps, if any would know, we might inquire as to the how they were murdered and if they had any shared interests or hangouts."

That they might be able to inspect the "next body" before it is burned may not be a request well received, so for now he keeps the thought to himself.

"I checked out Clenchjaw's a couple of days ago," Lubella replied to Aldren. "It was pretty quiet then, but that was in the morning. I wouldn't mind going back sometime later in the day. The curfew sure puts a damper on things, though. A 6 o'clock closing time isn't exactly what I'm used to!" Lubella was usually up for a trip to a tavern (which had got her in trouble a few times, when she was in training with the Cult of the Dawnflower).

**********

Lubella followed Grelda on her tour of the murder sites. So far they hadn't uncovered much in the way of clues. "Grelda, sorry to have to ask morbid questions, but do you know how they were killed? And have you heard of anyone seeing anything or anyone unusual in the area at the time?"

Rebels Map

She looks at Lubella and Aldren and decides to trust them.

I ain't heard anyone say they knows how they were killed mind you. Always in the middle of the night when decent folks are asleep.

She pauses, trying to think.

Some have said the bodies had small bites or punctures. Others say they saw bloodied mouths. I am not sure who to believe.
But I can only hope you young ones are able to stop it.
None of the folk around here seem to be willing to stand up out of fear...not only of the murderers,
but the fact that the city's dottari would turn a blind eye if they called fer help.
With the curfew, folks stay inside. Safer and all.
Nobody is going to risk going out to see what is happening.
If these poor victims had known better,
or were not forced out of need, they probably would be ok.
But some cannot help it if there is something needed in the middle of the night.

Lubella paused to consider the situation. The curfew certainly made it harder to deal with this mayhem. "Hmm. It seems we may need to be here at night, if we are to catch this killer."

Tiefling Investigator (empiricist) 6/Swashbuckler (inspired blade) 1 | HP 34/66 | AC 25 Tch. 15, Ff. 21 | Fort +6, Ref +12, Will +3 | Resist cold/electricity/fire: 5 | Init +5 | Perception +14; darkvision 60 ft. | "Jackdaw"

"Hmm, by what you are saying, Mistress Grelda, those murdered were victims of opportunity. Our killer stalks the streets at night and falls upon those who find themselves alone and isolated. As my companion says, we need to stalk the stalker and catch them before any more poor souls lose their life. And may I ask, what is it that people around these parts need at night, to make it necessary to be out in the streets by themselves? Perhaps we can help provide that which they need, at least until we deal with the killer."

Talvek thinks for a while, drawing the map of the neighbourhood in his mind and mentally dotting the places where the murders took place... or, at least, where the bodies were found. He has difficulty seeing the pattern, however, so he asks Grelda again a few questions.

Intelligence: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

"Are there any places near the murder locations that are uninhabited, abandoned? A building where the killer might hole up during the day?"

Knowledge local?: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Rebels Map

The old woman ponders the questions.

There are lots of abandoned buildings around here. But none that I recall next to them murdered places. I don't go snooping in other buildings. As for people getting out....you know our heritage. We are not normally bothered by the dark. While some may be up to no good, others may simply prefer the night to the bright sun.
Or they may simply need food or medicine for one of their own.
I didn't know them all personally.

Talvek is able to mentally overlay the murder sites with his understanding of the Nursery streets. (See map, violet dots near R6)

"Does anyone have pen and paper?" Talvek turns to his companions. He makes a quick sketch of the neighbourhood's streets, marking the murder sites and showing the result to the rest of the group.

"What do you think? It seems like the center of the area delineated by the dots would be the place to search."

"I hate to suggest it, but what do you think of acting as bait, Talvek?" From Julessa's apologetic expression, it's clear she finds the suggestion distasteful. Then... if you're attacked... we come to your aid and apprehend this killer."

"That is a fantastic idea! I can try and disguise myself to appear like a regular, down-on-their-luck citizen. Our killer won't find me easy prey, though." Talvek puts a hand on the hilt of his rapier and winks. He seems inordinately excited about being bait for a serial murderer.

Lubella had to admit that Talvek trying to draw out the killer was less likely to result in loss of life than waiting for a passerby to be attacked. Still the idea of using her friend as bait made her worry. "I suppose. You'd have to keep a careful eye out, so whoever it is doesn't catch you unawares. The rest of us would need to come to your assistance right away!" If were to happen to him, I'd never forgive myself.

"Let's look around for a suitable hiding spot. Grelda, after we find a good place, would you be able to discretely warn the locals, so they don't panic if they notice us? We'd have to be there for several hours."

Aldren falls silent while the others discuss next steps, eyeing Grelda but in thought, not suspicion. He agrees with Talvek acting as bait, yet... "I'm not sure we're dealing with a humanoid. Or, if we are, not a normal one. Without seeing the victims in person it's hard to tell, but small bites or punctures? Bloodied mouths? Something beyond mere murder is going on here." Laria is going to worry when we don't return by the start of curfew. Lubella considered going back to let the other woman know what they were up to, but crossing the bridge twice in a short period of time seemed like an unnecessary risk.

She surveyed the area and picked out hiding spots. She helped people with their disguises, if they wanted, and checked to make sure they were well hidden. After helping the others, she picked out suitable concealment for herself. As darkness fell, she tried to keep a light spell going on her scimitar. She kept it hidden under her cloak while she withdrew the blade just enough to renew the spell periodically.

When discussing a plan, Aldren says with a completely straight face, "Generally, I find that if you're being attacked by someone with murderous intent, a simple, 'Help, this bastard is trying to kill me' tends to suffice. An owl's hoot might be difficult to pull off." He winks, then adds, "If you're pretending to be drunk, make the sound of a drunk. Start coughing and hacking, but do it with your eyes turned away from the threat you've identified. You signal to the hunter that his prey is distracted and weak, while you let us know something is about to happen. Don't make it fancier than it has to be."

Later, during the final preparations...

"Really? I can't believe it. I have to wear... this!? Ugh!" Aldren holds up a moldy blanket carrying a strong stench of urine and wrinkles his nose in disgust. The fact that he was the one who originally suggested it is forgotten for the moment. "When do I get to get drunk and turn a trick again? I swear, this whole 'Save the World' thing is for suckers... I'll never forgive Rex for dragging me into this." Regardless, when the time comes, Aldren finds himself a corner to huddle in and pretends as best he can to be a down-on-his-luck member of the lowest caste in Kintargan society.

Mistress, I've done some weird stuff for you, even by my standards, but this one... never again. Sorry. Just, no. Never again.

Yup, can't edit my token either.

Julessa is happy to let Lubella take the lead in suggestion where to hide, and pulls her hood down low over her face as she squats down in a corner behind a rain barrel, crossbow on her lap. There's a large brick luckily on which to sit, and leaning against the rough stone wall she feels almost comfortable; she'd normally be in bed by this time, ready to snatch a few hours sleep before rising to bake the next day's batch. As the darkness falls, she fights as best she can to keep her chin from nodding and her eyelids from going heavy.

His disguise isn't great, but hopefully it will do in the dimness. Before starting his "drunken" circuit, Talvek drinks one of his special extracts, enhancing his awareness of danger and reaction speed. His heart is hammering in his chest, but he tries to appear calm and collected. That is, until he gets out in the street and starts staggering about, singing off-key and muttering to himself. There was no shortage of people with drinking problems in the Nursery, so he had pretty good knowledge of how a drunk person acts and moves.

The ladies move into position shortly before sundown. Talvek works on his convincing disguise and Alden and the Blue Warlock stay to the north out of sight.

The sun goes down and the streets clear as the sixth bell rings the start of the imposed curfew. The first hour passes uneventfully. None of you spot anything or anyone moving.

The second hour, a couple of tiefling teens are seen chasing rats and an old woman gives Aldren and Arcos a dirty look as she pushes past them in the alley and starts searching refuse bins.

Lubella and Julessa figure about half the buildings inside the square are abandoned and normal rats scurry about for food.

how late do you want to stay out?.

Lubella quietly recited her evening prayers at sunset, then got into her hiding spot and waited. She kept a light spell going on her sheathed scimitar, renewing it every 20 minutes (being careful to not to allow a flash of light to escape. She figured they would have to wait quite a while. By the sounds of what Grelda has told them, the murders often happened in the middle of the night.

I think we have to be prepared to stay out all night.

Around 11pm, Lubella hears some flapping and high pitched squeeks overhead, going towards Talvek's position. She had not seen anying, as it was over by the roofline.

What was that? Lubella was just reaching into her pocket for a snack, when she heard squeaking and fluttering. She cast a spell to give her more mobility, stepped around the corner, and looked up to try to locate the source of the noises.

Casting Expeditious Retreat, making a 5 ft step, and looking up towards the roofline of the center building.

She doesn't have low-light vision, so it might be a matter of trying to catch a glimpse of something passing in front of the stars.
Her scimitar is still in its scabbard; she doesn't want to give her position away just yet by drawing the glowing blade.

Lubella catches a very brief glimpse of what appears to be large bats or bat-like. It is very hard to see in the dark before they disappear behind the corner and roof of the next building. The handful of creatures is heading towards Talvek's last location.

While the rest of you do not hear or see anything of significance, Lubella hears the fluttering and high-pitched laughing of several creatures, but does not see anything in the night sky.

Suddenly there is a shimmering about 10' feet above Talvek and two strange, winged-humanoid creatures appear in mid-air. Both very small, almost bird-sized with bat wings and large, grinning mouths.

As they appear, they point at Talvek.

Talvek make 2x WILL save vs enchantment spell/spell-like effect.
