Xiang studies the aura, thinking, What manner of magic does this Yaoren wield?

To Xiang Lun's eyes, the manor house is covered in gossamer webs of illusion! Cobwebs cover every inch of the building, although the windows and doors are open. The cobwebs paint the building as a run down shack, barely in better condition than the others of the village. Beneath these webs is a brilliant pagoda of jade green and red with gold gilding. The muddied courtyard fronting the building is really a small reflecting pool filled with koi that surrounds the pagoda. The brick path trough the courtyard, a small arching bridge.

This is not a safe place to be!

Please, noble sirs! Yaoren awaits!

Male Human Summoner 4

Baolin and the qinglong both know that they are walking into a vile place. The dark aura of the yokai affects the dragon in particular, putting the great being on edge with a low growl. Baolin reassures the qinglong with a subtle nod and an acknowledgement that he understands the danger of the situation. Baolin's cousin nudges him to open his third eye to the see the auras of the place for himself. When he sees the illusion that overlays the palatial residence, he understands. "We are pleased to make the acquaintance of your wife. Please extend our compliments to her. This is a fine and beautiful house."

Thisis what the pagoda looks like:

The mayor bows again, and guides the heroes over the bridge and into the pagoda. The first floor is a large open room surrounded on all sides by red and green painted columns which support the second story. In the corners of the building, staircases arc up to a second floor balcony. Incense burners dangle from silken ropes suspended from the ceiling, filling the air with the heady scent of jasmine. Facing the center of the room, stand four very life-like stone statues in decorative armor. Their faces are terrible to behold, red or green-faced, with fierce, gaping maws and fangs that face up and down. They each hold double-bladed pole arms at the ready.

A canopy of teak and mahogany latticework dominates the exact center of the room. A light drapery of the sheerest silk coils about the posts and lattice and screens the interior of the canopy from view. The silk billows and flutters in breezes from the windows and doors, breezes not felt in Three Trees. Beneath the canopy, sits an elegant woman dressed in silk robes. She cooly regards Chao Shi and the heroes he brings to her.

Yaoren, my love! I have brought the newcomers to our village! I told them how lovely you are, and they said they needed to meet you! He rushes forward and bows to his wife as a commoner to a great Lord.

Greetings, weary travelers, please. You must be tired from your journey. Please.. Enter. Her voice is soft, musical. Chao Shi, please. We have guests. Offer them drink to slake their thirst.

Yes, my love! He claps his hands and servants appear from the shadows, each bearing trays laden with hard cakes and cups of hunagjiu.

I put the map up, just in case combat started. But I wasn't sure to put Hayashi. Feel free to rearrange yourselves as you want.

Moving swiftly, Hayashi faced no resistance on the grounds. As the heroes entered into the maw of the boar, he took care to stay close enough to help and hear, and hidden enough to throw what he suspected as an oni in disguise off.

Hayashi is behind the open window.

Xiang Lun sees the webs of illusion. He realizes the danger they face, and knows he needs to act quickly. He leans close to Jian Xi and Dawei and whispers, "Be on your guard, and accept nothing from them."

Upon entry, Xiang Lun studied the creature Yaoren, believing nothing about her appearance. At the offer of refreshment, he says, "I thank you kindly, but I have no need of refreshment at this time."

He continues examining the room and Yaoren, seeking to pierce the illusion she has created.

Baolin bows to Yaoren, fully appreciating the danger that they are in. Xiang's warning seems to echo through his mind. He pays particular attention to the statues. If she is an illusionist, they may be in greater danger than they understand. "We cannot impose your gracious kindness. Our only thirst is enlightenment, to understand more about yourself and this fine village."

Yaoren is resplendent in her red and gold hanfu. It trails beneath and behind her in a gentle waterfall of silk. Golden pendants and chains dangle from her hair. She laughs, and waves the servers away with a casual flick of her enameled fingers. You are very cordial. Clearly, you were well educated in Lingshen. Oh yes, I know where you're from. All of you. She smiles as her servers bow and quietly depart.

Chao Shi stands and intones in a bold, clear voice. You are in the presence of Yaoren, Advisor to the Mayor of Three Trees, and Appointee of She of the Jasmine Mists.

Yaoren nods her head. What would you know?

Wary as ever, Hayashi and Jian Xi do not spot any warriors or attackers laying in wait. The pagoda is secure and unprotected. Which is the most horrific thing at all. They do spot several large pieces of spider silk clinging to the walls of the pagoda. And, they hear the faint sound of spiders chittering in the rafters.

It was subtle, Hayashi almost thought he was imagining things. But, She did it again, and he was certain. Yaoren's eyes were subtly glancing over in his direction! She knew he was there.

I am pleased that we have been able to talk. She of the Jasmine Mists prefers the shadows, but, I do so loath hiding. Not all spiders spin webs, after all. So, King Huang thinks himself an Emperor, a god amongst mortal men. Hah!. she laughs and extends her hand outward. Chao Shi whimpers, but steps forward, placing his head beneath her fingers to be pet and stroked like a dog.

I love my wife. Yaoren is kind and gentle with Chao Shi. Yaoren loves Chao Shi. Tears trail down his cheeks, but still he stays put.

Men are so easily controlled. King Huang shall be no different. Soon, he, too, shall bow to She of the Jasmine Mists. She gives them all appreciative glances. You are all comely and skilled, I could find places for you here, in my service.

Hayashi sighed, and moved out from cover, shuriken hid in his palm. Moving towards the center of the room, he distrusted his senses, and whispered "Dispel," under his breath as he approached what he saw as a yokai in disguise.

Hayashi moves to Q-11. Can he make a Will save to disbelieve?

Yaoren smiles as Hayashi steps from the shadows. So good of you to join us Natukami-san!. Her long lacquered fingernails lightly clack against the arms of her throne. To his eyes, though he is convinced she is a yokai, she appears as she has before: an exceedingly beautiful woman from Tian-Shu woman dressed in the ornate costume of imperial Lung Wa nobility. I assure you, noble shinobi, I am as you have always seen me. I have no cause to lie.

We came with a job to do, yokai! You will not stand in our way!. The brave warrior spits defiance into her face, but all the yokai does is laugh.

"I do not call you a monster," Baolin says with sadness and pity. "We seek only to live in peace, to prosper in harmony. We sought an audience for understanding and dialogue, even as we have been beset with attacks from a hidden enemy since the day we set out to bring civilization to this small stretch of land. That is what we seek. What do you seek?" Baolin seems relaxed even as he speaks to this creature, knowing that she is likely immune to the temptation of forging a peace. He can feel the qinglong coiled to strike behind him, as well as the tension of the other brave warriors. Yet he hopes to learn more about their enemy, so that they will not be so blind in the future.

Jade Moon and Xiang Lun both recall that thousands of years ago, before Lung Wa, before Yixing brought enlightenment of civilization to Tian Xia, humans revered the Kami and the other creatures of the spirit world. They built torii to honor the kami, and even offered them prayers and sacrifices in incense, flowers, and fruits. Other spirits demanded other offerings. The spider spirits of the waterfalls demanded human sacrifices. Legends say that these waterfall guardians were the first yorogumo.

Hayashi speaks in a low voice, You know of the dark spirit, the fallow wood, and the red moon. All the shinobi touched by your evil know of it. This cannot be your doing: whose works are these?

These works were not mine, shinobi, but they are the works of my kind. Yaoren smiles, and sips her wine. You think yourselves so strong. So powerful. Safe, with your enlightened ways, and your laws. But, you did not see the oni hiding among you in Chu Ye. you did not see the monsters lurking in the depths of Xidao. Fools.

The globs arc through the pagoda, striking only the flagstones and statues of the building. But, one web strikes true! Hu Baolin, hero of the Struggle of the Twin Cranes, finds his limbs bound by the sticky white fluid. He will not be undone! He has sacrificed the white horse to the gods, pledged his fate with those of his fellows. He is of noble purpose and great dignity! His honor demands that he defeat Yaoren and free this lowly village from the tyranny of the terrible yokai! Jade Moon continues her song, rallying her companions in their battle against the foul Yaoren. Lady White Snake joins against Fahai in another of their epic conflicts. This time, the evil turtle is too strong for her magic. His great shell turns aside even her most powerful enchantments. His heart, long hardened by evil, is immune to her song and pleas for mercy. The only choice she has is to ask him a question. The old turtle is wise, however, and answers the question easily. But, it is simply a trick to lull the evil sorcerer into weakness, as Lady White Snakes asks another riddle, this one far more challenging.

His starry scales flash and flare brilliantly as his claws rip apart two of Yaoren's false images.

Xian Lun summons his own chi, his fingers flicker through the forms, weaving like vines through the air. Baolin and the dragon both struggle to free themselves from the sticky webs. The soldier has trouble, but the dragon tears free easily and charges towards the nearest spider to rip it into shreds. The qinglong roars loudly at the sorceress and her minions. The spider rears on its legs, ready to strike!

Then, everything happens at once. The vines and long grass coil and thrash about the air, fully binding themselves around Yaroen's legs, trapping her in place. She howls in frustration and tears and pulls against the cords, exposing her back to the heroes. Hayashi draws his ninja-to from his back sheathe and cut upwards in a single motion, shredding the webs, before flicking a shuriken at Yeoren while taking a step forward. The blade flies through the air and slams deep into the sorceress' back! Her howl turns to one of agony as she whirls around, seething.

You dare! I may fall! But you will suffer! Even monkeys fall from trees! She of the Jasmine Mists will have her vengeance! I swear to you! I SWEAR IT!!!

Xiang Lun's frustrated oath turns to one of stoic pride as his spell finally catches purchases, and Yaoren is entangled in the thrashing underbrush. He breathes deep, summoning his ki within him, steadying the wild flow of energy that swirls within him as a great river. At first it is a torrid rapids: wild, uncontrolled, and undirected. It bounces and chokes within him, providing great bursts of power, but her foul spell has dammed the flow. Then, slowly, the ki finds a new path. WIth each steadying breath and measured thought, he calms the flow and guides it, momentarily, around the rapids. The energy becomes a powerful river once more, and fuels his swing with great strength and sure aim! The warrior swings and his blade cuts the sorceress deep, running through her heart and nearly cutting her in half.

She collapses to the ground, dead. Her spiders, no longer under her control, flee the room. The day is won! Three Tree Village is saved!
