Jian Xi bows before Laozu. "It's an honor to meet one such as your self." He says rising from his bow. His gaze sweeps across the mans home taking in everything. This is a man my master would have respected. He thinks silently.

Does Jian Xi normally wear his mask?

Only in combat....I might actually make an in combat alias and an out of combat alias....maybe perhaps

As Laozu recounts the ritual, he keeps looking over at Jian Xi with narrowed eyes.

Yes... it is an honor to meet you...

He shakes himself and returns back to the group. This ritual is very trying. I am loathe to ask you to perform it on your own. But, I must travel east to collect herbs for my decoctions. The journey will take days at least, and my old body doesn't move as easily as it once did.

Hayashi was silent so far, committing every step to memory, and remembering what demon-slaying techniques taught to him by the clan.

"Thank you, Laozu-sensei," Hayashi said, speaking up, bowing very low to the elderly man. "It is my hope that these men would repent and awaken their true potential with us, for the benefit of all. Your advice is ever sought, and your mind is ever clear."

Mental note: If ever I come across herbs that make good tea, I should harvest some for the old geezer. He's a likable character, GM.

Jian Xi can't quite put his finger on it. He knows Laozu means them no harm, far from it. The hermit would defend their company with his life. But, it's almost as if the shaman is afraid of Jian Xi. But, that's not right either. He definitely has the sense that he wishes to talk to the warrior alone, though.

Laozu smiles at Hayashi's words. You are kind to flatter an old man! My home is always welcome to you noble warriors. I sense greatness within each of you. One day, you will free this realm from the evil that infests it.

"Is anything the matter Laozu? I get the feeling you wished to talk to me." He states simply.

Jade Moon's curiosity began to grow. She wondered about Jian Xi and what he was thinking about. He seemed a bit off.

Laozu sighs. Honarable Jian Xi, forgive my words. I dare not say my fears for angering one as auspicious as you. But, if I am right, you bear a resemblance to one who holds great sway over these lands. A great evil. Now, go, I will not say more! Please! Do not make me say it!

He sighs, sensing that Jian Xi will not relent and in the interest of speeding things along. Very well. You bear a likeness to the Stag Lord. I look at you now, and it is as though I am staring into the eyes of the man who came here alone and lost from Lingshen all those many years ago. I cannot say why or what this knowledge may do to you. I speak only what I know. Perhaps you are of his house, and do not know? I am told his name is still in high regard in the lands of King Huang.

He bows again and then stands, rudely pushing at Jian Xi. Now Please! Go! Do not make me say any more of these dark words! Please! He pushes Jian Xi out and slams the door shut. It's clear he won't open it again any time soon.

Such dark words balance the great boon Laozu has gifted the noble heroes! Now, they can free the shinobi of the dark zhuyao gripping their souls! With heavy purpose, the noble warriors mount their proud steeds and ride west to Bai Cheng's trading post. Despite the weight of King Huang's command, their steps are light, and they make good time. The gengs pass easily, and there is even a brief break in unceasing drizzle and fog! The sun is setting at the Hour of the Sky Dragon as Baolin leads his party through the wooden gates.

Have you discovered a way to free the shinobi, Lord Baolin?

Baolin dismounts from his horse, stretching his tired legs. He bows to his hosts, grateful for their enduring hospitality. Once freed from their magical enslavement, we can discover how deep their fanaticism runs. How have the captives been under your watch, and the bandits?" He looks into the setting sun. The stars will be out soon. "On the day before our departure from Waigonshu, I requested assistance from Tang Fengzhi. Have you received word of the arrival of any assistance for our endeavor?"

The qinglong approaches Bai-Cheng, bowing its noble head as courtesy. The laconic dragon asks, "Have you heard any tales from Quain? Perhaps it has not been long enough for word to reach us here, but I wish to know what happened during the Ceremony of the Celestal Dragon."

His shocked expression is plan to his allies as the door slams shut behind him. He remains silent and pensive as they journey back to the trading post his mind consumed by his conversation.

It's here his thoughts are unable to go...never knowing either of his parents he couldn't even say what happened. Am I truly related to someone who'd ally himself with oni and other foul beasts...why was I abandoned...was it to hide the shame and pain of a ruthless attack... Bai-Cheng bows and head into the house. He returns a few moments later with a scroll bound in a bamboo sheath. My lord, this arrived while you were gone.

the Letter:

The letter is well crated. The calligraphy is impeccable and on the finest paper. The ink is well-blotted and dark upon the white paper.

Friend Baolin,
What could send you to Shenmen? My friend, that is such an ignoble and dangerous destination! Surely, it does not befit one of your stature or dignity. Forgive my candor, my friend. Your assistance during the war between Hu and Ma shall always be present in my mind! It is my honor to repay your kindness and bravery.

Alas, I am no great warrior. I am a merchant, better suited to the counting house and trade. I have sent you my eldest son, Tang Bohu. He studied fighting in the House of the Iron Lotus in Xiwu and has served in the army of Lord Chang Wen. Recently, he has served as captain of my guards.

He brings with him six brave guards who have served me well for many years. Their loyalty and valor is without question. They also will bring with them a cart of supplies to assist you in your mission.

Their travels shall, of necessity, be slow, as they are laden with provisions for you. However, they shall not be long after you receive this message. Perhaps a day or two at the most.

As always your friend,
Tang Fengzhi

As Baolin reads (assuming he reads the scroll), Bai-Cheng turns to Qinglong.

The courier said the Celestial Dragon did not appear to claim the heart of Princess Dexiu. They said that there was a giant storm for a full month surrounding the Dragon Temple and there was flooding in Lamning and Nanzhu!

He wrings his hands together in worry and shakes his head at the dolorous omen.

In Lingshen, a fire breathing lion appeared and sat on King Huang's throne. The courier said that it was a fierce creature and snapped and swiped at the King's retainers and courtiers that approached the throne to remove the suanni. It spat fire at his seven children, and roared even louder. They say its claws dug deep furrows into the king's throne! Then, when King Huang appeared in his armor to slay the beast, the lion dragon roared and filled the room with smoke that smelled of imperial incense! King Huang sheathed his sword and the suanni leaped at him! It burst into smoke and flame and when the smoke cleared, the Imperial seal of Lung Wa was burned onto his breastplate in jade, gold, and red.

He bows and steps back.

I am no great scholar, but these are all powerful omens. What could they all mean?

The two men and Jade Moon enter the makeshift jail cell. Gao has his brigands doing basic exercises within their small room. He counts out repetitions and calls out different moves, and the brigands respond quickly. As Xian Lun, Hayashi, and Jade Moon walk past he orders the brigands to stop and bow to the "Three Nobles". They all do this, then return to their practices.

The shinobi are kept in a small room at the far end of the stable. a tiny window gives access to the bound shinboi. They're gagged and tightly secured by thick rope. Even if they could move, there's hardly enough room for them to walk. As Hayashi opens the window, the two shinobi give murderous glares at the noble warriors. Clearly, whatever calmed their emotions the day before has worn off.

Dat foreshadowing, though!
With regards to Hayashi--he would do it in the clearing of the fort, since it needs the sunlight.

"The next sun will set on enlightened men," Hayashi said to the shinobi from the window. "Once the justsu upon you is broken, your choice will truly be your own."

Hayashi turned to the Shugenja*, closing the window, and told him, "For now, we must prepare the herbal concoction. Tomorrow at high sun, I will need your help with them."

It is the hour of the Ogre, and sun hangs full in the sky. Its bright warmth has burned away the clouds and mist for a few precious moments. Now is the perfect time for the ritual!

Xiang Lun shuts the door behind him and sets two cups of tea on a barrel. Come! Let us enjoy this simple tea and meditate on its simplicity. He lifts the tea and breathes in deep.

Charm Person DC 15: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

As he speaks, a breeze carries the scent of bamboo and cherries through the stable. One of the possessed ninja smiles and drinks his tea. Thank you, great lord! Xiang Lun stands and leads the warrior from the stable. The shinobi lays down on the ground in the light of the rice ball.

Hayashi lights the bundles of herbs sets them at the five cardinal points. The fifth bundle he places atop a small platter atop the shinobi's chest. Meanwhile, the others brew the tea. When the tea is ready, Xiang Lun holds up the shinobi's head and gives him the tea. The warrior splutters, but manages to choke it down.

Hayashi lights the sage and shakes the smoke over each direction, hovering them over the lighted bundles of herbs on the ground, and then sending the smoke over the key pressure points.

The shinobi screams and shakes his head, then his mouth opens impossibly wide and a spider with a human face crawls out. It howls in rage and tries to scurry away fromthe body, but it's drawn towards the rice ball.

Is the spider-thing drawn inside the riceball, or is it just observing it as if hypnotized?

Hayashi's brow furrowed at the horrific sight of the tiny man-faced spider. He then turned to the shinobi.

He would lead him to the room again, and leave him to rest, nodding sagely at any observers of the ritual.
He'll then escort the other shinobi with Xiang Lun to perform the ritual on him, hoping the Shugenja can cast another charm upon the second shinobi.

Once more, Xiang Lun enchants the shinobi and Hayashi conducts the ritual. This time, though, the possessed ninja fights the ritual. The spider sinks its pincers into his flesh, refusing to come out. But, the smoke from the sage mingles with the fumes of the incense. They draw deep into the shinboi's chest through his nose with a single breath, and then force out zhuyao as he exhales. The thing screeches and tries to run away. But, instead, it joins its fellow atop the rice ball. It howls again as the two are drawn into its confines.
