Male Human Bladebound Magus 3

I'll watch to see if Lamsfel's words get through to the goblin, though I'm not expecting much. I'll ready a charge in case the goblin starts swinging at the elf.

Male Varisian (human) Ranger 3

Tristan stands panting and insecure. "Shouldn't we just kill it and move on? I'd feel a lot better with some armor on."

I'll delay until violence erupts.

Will save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8. That counts as making an attack, automatically breaking the fascination effect.

The goblin shudders under the witch's malign glare, but seems to comes to an awareness of its senses at the same time.

Tybus Elhezen wrote:

As it turns out, you can't ready a charge. So I'll interpret that to a delay, as with Tristan.

As Marcelina continues to work on the fire (she has managed to douse the flames entirely on the side of the wagon nearest her), the last remaining goblin watches Lamsfel approach curiously. For a moment, it almost appears as though the elf's gesture of trust is enough to cross the language barrier... but then the goblin cackles maniacally and launches a flurry of attacks with its dogslicer and torch.

Dogslicer and torch attacks: 1d20 ⇒ 2, damage 1d4 ⇒ 1; 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (2) - 4 = -2, damage 1d2 ⇒ 1 plus 1 fire

Tristan and Tybus stop delaying, but that basically means everyone gets to go again.

Male Human Bladebound Magus 3

"That's it! Time to kill it!" I'll go ahead and charge to take a good swipe at the beastie.

Charge: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

"Sorry, Lam, but I don't think we need more kneebiters. I see where ye wot, though. Not that he'd appreciate it."

Tybus' blow slashes open the goblin's chest, leaving it staggered literally. It looks dazed by the blow, and stares at the blood pouring from the wound as though unsure where it came from.

Posted a couple discussion topics in the Discussion Thread, FYI.

Female Human (Varisian) Oracle (Waves): 1

Marcelina is pretty satisfied with the fire not spreading at this point, and turns her attention back to the goblin expecting it to be dead. Shockingly it isn't. And as it launches once more into attacks, she doesn't hesitate in moving in to help.

Wintery Touch: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

At Marcelina's touch, the cold of winter steals through the goblin's body, draining it of life's warmth. It collapses to the ground alongside the bodies of its companions.

121 XP more for each of you.

Looking around, the impromptu heroes see that the battle seems to be dying down - there are still shouts and screams from somewhere off in the distance, along with the occasional clash of weapons, but the immediate area seems to be calm. From their viewpoint atop the bluff, they can see across the southern half of town; fires dot the vista, smoke curling up to dim the last stray beams of the sunset and turn the sky blood-red.

There appears to be no immediate threat - what is your next move?

28/28 hp

The elf shakes his head sadly. "You know, I thought perhaps the little runt would stay calm and we could find out whose bright idea this was." He looks up at the others, "Someone defiled Desna's party by bringing these monsters into the heart of town. I want to know who would do such a thing."

He claps Tybus on the back, "Thanks for coming to my rescue, my valiant friend! And Lady Leena! I don't know what you did to him, but I think I will hesitate to shake your hand!"

Looking around at the continuing mayhem, "It appears to be calming down, maybe, but I don't trust goblins. What do you say we continue our plan to get gear at the Rusty Dragon and see if we can be of assistance around town? Much as I despise goblins, I haven't had this much fun in ages!" With that he gives Marcellina a grin and a wink. I don't know if she is still in babble mode or not - but Lamsfel knows nothing of babble mode yet.

Agreed--let's make haste to the Rusty Dragon, and stick together on the way. These creatures could be lurking anywhere.

Female Human (Varisian) Oracle (Waves): 1

I'm assuming she's not. Though she could have come back at any point during your speach. :)

Giving a weak smile to Tristan, Marcelina tries not to look at any of the bodies or the blood. Instead she just nods, and starts off in that direction, eager to put some distance between herself and the carnage she participated in.

If she sees a fire that's about to say burn down a house with people in it, she'll stop to try to put it out. Otherwise she's heading with all speed to the inn.

Male Human Bladebound Magus 3

Aye, let's make for the inn. I've got my bow and arrows there, since I might need to keep some distance now. They chewed me up good. And let's keep our eyes sharp; I've no wish to go walking into a goblin ambush.

28/28 hp

"Oh! I hadn't realized you were hurt! Lady Leena..." Realizing that she's making haste for the inn, Lamsfel says, "I guess we're leaving, gentlemen. Lady Leena, hold a moment!" He jogs to catch up, "We can't go rushing into an ambush. Also, are you able to heal Tybus? He's been wounded, I'm afraid, and we need everyone at their best if we run into more of the knee-biters."

Female Human (Varisian) Oracle (Waves): 1

Marcelina pulls up short as she hears Lamsfel's words, an embarrassed look on her face. "I'm so sorry! I didn't see..." She hurries back to Tybus, her hand already glowing softly as she reaches out for him.

Cure Light: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Sorry bout that. I must have missed where he got hurt. But then, it was probably IC anyways. She was in a pretty good hurry to get away from the mess. :)

Will get next scene moving once I regain consciousness. ;)

Once Marcelina finishes her spell, soothing the worst of Tybus' wounds, she leads the way through town toward the Rusty Dragon. As the group makes its way down High Street to Festival Street, then through the market square toward Market Street, they see a number of signs of the battle - small fires burning, discarded weapons or upended barrels, and the occasional body, mostly goblins - but encounter no serious obstacles. None, that is, until they round the corner onto Market Street just a few dozen yards from the Rusty Dragon's front door and come upon a chilling scene:

In the center of the street, a goblin wielding some kind of long, hooked polearm is facing off against a large dog. The goblin is mounted atop a bizarre animal that looks like nothing so much as a cross between a gigantic chihuahua and a goblin, an almost-hairless creature with a face somehow both ratlike and oddly swollen. Nearby, two other goblins cower away from the dog in an alley alongside the inn, while behind a couple of rain barrels to the south, an old woman in a Varisian's brilliantly colored scarfs hides away from the marauding goblins. Even as the PCs take the scene in, the mounted goblin cuts down the dog with a squeaky shout of triumph, and it and the two others nearby hurl what seem like insults and invective toward the dead animal's body for several long moments.

And another map. The weirdly-shaped building on the right side of the map is the Rusty Dragon, while the rest are just regular houses. Place yourselves on the map - you will be coming in from the west along the road - and roll initiative, but you all gain a free surprise round against the goblins, as they are busy focusing on their "triumph."

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 initiative

How far away should we be?

Male Human Bladebound Magus 3

Initiative 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

I don't think I can do anything but move closer. Well, actually, I'll use another Arcane Pool point to recharge my weapon, then move.

Also, previously,That's better! Much thanks, Marcelina. That's some potent magic ye have!

Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

With a grin, Lamsfel whispers to Tybus, "I'll go left and meet you at the goblins."

Assuming this is the initial placement and you'll tell us when to make our changes for the surprise round. Lamsfel's intent is to move with all haste up to the next alley, then around the house, to come up behind G1 and G2, hopefully providing a flank.

Male Human Bladebound Magus 3

Responding to Lamsfel in a hushed voice, "Gotcha. I've got something for the rat-dog thing, too."

I'll move my 30 during the surprise round.

Ok, so I just put Gan near Lamsfel's before square, which is too far away for any spells or hexes, so I'll use Guidance on Tristan again.

Be careful--that thing looks dangerous.

Know Nature to see what else Gan knows:
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Tristan draws his sword and moves closer, looking for an opportunity to strike. Initiative:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Lamsfel wrote:

Surprise rounds are single move or standard action only - if you're moving, you can't really get further than I7 or so. Whether you'll want to keep going with your current plan might depend on how the goblins roll for their intiatives, but for certain you can't really make it up the alley as far as you are at the moment.

Goblin warrior initiatives: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Mounted goblin intiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Marcelina still has a surprise round action to take, then Lamsfel (and Marcelina if she happens to roll better than a 12 on her initiative) can take another action before the goblins get to go. Tybus, you will get to take your action before the mounted goblin, so you might want to post your intended action (and possibly a contingency in case the first action isn't feasible) as well. After this round, all the goblins will go at the same time.

Gan:
The mount is a rather hideous creature called a "goblin dog," which despite the name is actually a rather large rodent, somewhat distantly related to the donkey rat [ooc](capybara to you and me). They are often bred by goblins to serve as mounts, and are notorious for their allergenic dandruff, to which just about everyone who isn't a goblinoid has a rather severe reaction to. Skin-to-skin contact is not recommended.[/ooc]

Wait! We might want to fight these things from a distance! If you need to get close, try to stay away from that thing's skin.

Points at the goblin dog.

As a tactical note, lest I forget later, the mounted goblin's weapon has reach. Characters who are proficient with all martial weapons recognize it as a horsechopper, a goblin-made variant on a halberd. It has the trip property as well.

Blast it, I know better! OK, he would have run out of movement at the end of the alley. He would take a double move from there up the alley, around the back of the building and up the next alley as far as he can get. I don't know how deep the alley is, so you will have to tell me how far he gets.

Lamsfel wrote:

Placed you at the closest-to-the-goblins point you can get. If you do not wish a clear charge lane and/or would prefer some cover, you can readjust one square to the west if you like.

Female Human (Varisian) Oracle (Waves): 1

Sorry for the delay, busy day yesterday.

Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Marcelina approaches the goblin carefully, all too conscious of the fact that her magic is nearly spent and that this is likely the most challenging opponent yet.

Just movement forward, keeping close to the other fighter typ0es. :)

Seeing the newcomers, the goblins shriek and gibber, their previous focus of attention seemingly completely lost. As though inspired by their mounted champion's actions, the two goblins hiding in the alley rush out into the streets, waving their dogslicers menacingly as they try to match their hero's bravery.

The two goblin warriors move forward to attack Tybus and Tristan. Charging dogslicer attack on Tristan: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21, damage 1d4 ⇒ 4. Goblin2, headed for Tybus and unable to charge, provokes an attack of opportunity from Tristan as he goes by, however.

If the goblin is still alive:

Spoiler:
Regular dogslicer attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17, damage 1d4 ⇒ 4.

Tybus can take an action, though he might want to offer a contingency in case Tristan pulverizes his likely target.

Male Varisian (human) Ranger 3

Attack of Opportunity:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 82d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11

Tristan takes the blow to his side and looks incredulously to the blood streaming forth.

Male Human Bladebound Magus 3

Gaah! Nasty little bugger! Tybus yells as he slips around Tristan and tries a fancy move.

Spell Combat: Casts Grease at the squares indicated defensively, and attacks Goblin 1 with his cutlass.

Defensive casting (using additional bonus +2 to cast defensively) 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 versus DC 17

Attack 1d20 ⇒ 16
Damage 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Male Human Bladebound Magus 3

Ha ha! Can't believe that worked!

So we can keep track, here's an attempt at an initiative order. I think there may be adjustments needed, but it's a start.

17 Lamsfel
12 Tybus Elhezen
12 Goblin Footsoldiers
11 Goblin Cavalry
11 Tristan Tarrascon
08 Gan Liang
03 Marcelina

Actually, after the first round, I'm just sticking with "you guys go, then they go" - we've got a good group here that's posting regularly, but I think we'll keep moving better if we don't have to wait on specific players too often.

In the middle of the street, the goblin dog scrambles for purchase on a road suddenly covered in slick goo. Ref save, DC 13: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13. For a moment it almost appears that the beast will fall down, but it abruptly manages to catch its footing. The target of Tybus' attack, however, is not so fortunate. Having charged into range, it cannot manage to get its small wooden shield up fast enough to block Tybus' blow, and he runs it cleanly through.

Scratch one goblin.

The goblin dog eases itself out of the slippery area, but takes off running toward the group as soon as its paws touch solid, dry ground. Its rider seems to be guiding it effortlessly with his knobby knees, a surprising display of grace from the normally awkward and jittery goblins. Coming within range of his long hooked blade, the goblin rider slashes at the wounded Tybus, seeming insulted by the spell effect it just suffered. It rages and foams at the mouth while it swings. Dogslicer attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14, damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Knowledge (arcana), DC 22:
The mounted goblin seems to be under the effects of a rage spell.

You guys are up.

FYI--I couldn't see the full post until I quoted it (like what happened in the discussion thread. Not to pry, but did you roll an acrobatics check for the Goblin Dog? The initial save is just to avoid falling down, but if you try to move I believe you need to make an acrobatics check.

The exact text is "within or through," which isn't exactly clear when it comes to "stepping out of." However, since I didn't require Acrobatics checks from you guys to move out of the grease in the previous encounter (only Tristan had to make one, and it's 'cause he was forced to go forward to get past it), I didn't make the dog roll one either.

Gan hurries to catch up, moving into position behind Marcelina.

Foul creature! The Faceless One curses you! Your shots of triumph shall turn to ashes in your mouth.

Gan denounces the Mounted Goblin, casting Ill Omen on it.

Tybus, fall back! Don't let them surround you.

No worries. And I don't want to be a rules lawyer either. I was just checking 'cuz you had rolled all the other rolls in the open. And Gah! Missed the Know Arcana check by one.

Is everyone else able to see the full post (about the Goblin Dog)? Or am I the only one where the "can't see the post" thing is happening?

Male Varisian (human) Ranger 3

With grim determination, Tristan moves to engage the mounted goblin and its beastly mount. His face wrinkled in disgust he raises his sword, trying to strike them both down in the same blow.

Attack on mounted goblin (with Guidance):1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 262d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 = 13 If attack hits, Cleave on goblin dog:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 172d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16

Edit:Crit confirmation:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 82d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 1) + 6 = 8

Tristan's vicious blow hammers the goblin rider, and although it does not fall, it seems to keep going only by virtue of the rage that has apparently consumed it. As he turns his sword toward the goblin dog, though, the rider pushes hard with his knees, trying to force the beast away from the blow. Mounted Combat reaction to try to negate the attack on the goblin dog: Ride 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22. The desperate tactic works, and Tristan's greatsword slams into the earth rather than the flesh of the animal.

I did not see the edit to that post until this morning or I would have posted last night. *shrug*

Seeing the goblins all running toward the party, Lamsfel mutters a salty sailor's curse in elven as he realizes his tactics have completely removed him from the battle.

He moves one move action, to N7, and takes in the scene. The mounted goblin is badly wounded, but his beast does not appear to be. The one on foot is untouched and can threaten Gan and Leena easily, the second foot goblin's blood bright on Tybus' sword.

Trying to move stealthily, Lamsfel will try to move behind the mounted creature and surprise it with a dagger or two next round.

No, I don't expect this to make any difference, but Lamsfel thinks it might: Stealth 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Too bad I cannot charge. 'nuff said.

No, you are absolutely right. I had it in my head when that roll was going to be, and then completely failed to realize an immediate reaction would change things.

Goblin cav's other Ride check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

The desperate tactic almost seems to work, but a clinging bit of grease causes his knee to slip and practically forces the animal into the way of Tristan's blade. OK, trying to picture in my head what Lamsfel saw when he came to the end of the alley. With the failed ride check, Tristan has driven the goblin dog into the ground and the rider is prone, yes? If that is the case, Lamsfel will go for the still-standing foot goblin instead. Still cannot attack, but hoping to do so next round.
