Kzrira looks about for any other targets.
Varkata. Amir. Karethas. What is next? The gnolls have broken, I assume the priests will be about soon. Light them up when you see them.

Nice - 9000 posts. 5 digits is next.

EDIT - DM Voodoo - let me know if Kzrira can see the priest with all the archons blasting it.

Varkata bolsters her defenses as she glides to the ground. Shaking off the spell, she charges calling her allies to her side. She strikes the blasphemous priest hard with her blade of freezing flame (not a crit). The swarm of glowing orbs buzz around the dark figure blazing away with holy rays. 4d100 ⇒ (44, 2, 17, 63) = 126 The shadows absorb most of the beams.

The beast roars as he swings his great axe matching her speed, but calling upon the destructive might of the Rough Beast! Varkata- 31 slash, 18 slash The sounds of battle from the temple causes some of the fleeing gnolls to slow to watch the battle between the powerful priests.

Kzrira-hopefully someone will give you some light. I'll say that the Archon beams let you target if you get close enough, but 50% miss.

Question: My read of summoned monster rules is that the archons can use their Continual Flame ability, but that the spell effect ceases when they blink out of existence when the Summon expires -- is that right (such that Varkata could ask one of them to light the area for Kzrira)?

Varkata feels the axe bite into her flesh, surprised by how the pain can't quite reach her over the loud song in her blood. That's helpful. Dangerous, but helpful.

She calls to the nearest Archon, "My friend needs a little light to see Shaggy, if you'd be so kind.", then smiles as the glowing ball seems to ignite in a heatless flame, burning like a bright torch.

Solved one problem, but right now, it comes down to him or me... So it's got to be him.. She closes her eyes for a moment, mentally reaching for the power within her blood, releasing it all. When she opens her eyes again, the grey thunderclouds of her eyes are shot through with blue lightning, which mirrors the blue sparks arcing across her blade. She snarls, calling upon the ferocious strength of the drunken hero to add more power to her attacks, then lunges forward at the Gnoll.

Unseen above the fray, Karethas continues circling as he calls to far planes. Kzrira guides her magical mount closer skimming the ground as she calls for light. The darkness foils her as Varkata can see that only one arrow hits. One of the dimly glowing Archons suddenly flares up like a torch upon Varkata's command to shed light on the enemy. The other minor celestials keep zapping amber beams at the tall powerful gnoll dressed in tarnished heavy armor and raw, ripped hides black with dried blood. Shifting shadows still dance over the form, but seem to bear no relationship to the flickering Archon light.

The sorely wounded priestess of fortune spins her long blade which roars as the motion fans the dark flame. Buffered by steel and spell, the Beast Priest only suffers the first strike using his mass and armor to ward off the blade. The horrible great axe reminiscent of the the Carrion King's lethal weapon rises over the Varkata as Amir swoops down on his magical carpet and Sholeh slashes a hairy arm between the metal plates. The priest ignores the meddlesome rogue to focus on the envoy of good. The great axe hisses back and forth with horrible speed and unholy power as the vile gnoll cuts Varkata down. Varkata-16 slash, 17 slash

The gawking gnolls scattered about the darkened ruins begin to chant. "Narrgok! Narrgok!"

Technically, ending bloodrage is a free action. If Varkata realized that she was in peril of dying, she could have ended the bloodrage in-between attacks by the priest, which would have made her unconscious (at -3HP), rather than taking another blow. This does not mean the gnoll would not keep attacking the unconscious priestess, but it would keep her alive.

Just an option, if DM Voodoo allows it.

Karethas finishes his spell, but as he turns back to the battle to direct where his ally will appear, he witnesses another friend sundered by a great axe. Bile rises in his throat, and only with great effort of will does he manage not to empty his stomach. His sight blurred by tears he points to the great shadowed figure. It's not very dramatic to immediately begin ransacking the body, pockets first. Even if it is appropriate for someone of Amir's religious leanings. :-)

Breathing a great sigh of relief at seeing Varkata rise from such a vicious blow, Karethas quietly casts a spell, causing rippling waves of distortion rising off of Varkata as she rises, as if waves of force are twisting the very air around her. He invisibly floats near her and whispers, "Look impressive habibi, there are still gnolls about. Cut off his head perhaps."

Silent Image, DC 15 Will if they interact.

The great hound Archon blinks at Karethas and then turns to the suddenly silent gnolls. With a deep howl, he lifts his great sword high and lunges forward. The gnolls break, fleeing down the path to the Lower Town. Before long all the gnolls have fled Kelmarane to slink off into the night and their barren desert haunts.

Slowly, lights appear in some of the homes where the few citizens who were enslaved rather than immediately killed or taken away remain. Otherwise all is still in the town including the great brass tower that has replaced the Battle Market.

Bah - meant to post this earlier, but had family stuff.

Seeing the gnoll priest fall, Kzrira directs her flying mount toward the next pack of gnolls, arrows flying from her bow, one after another. Even as the gnolls flee, the arrows continue to fall on the gnolls as the archer cackles madly.

Run run all you want. You will all die. This is the last time one of you accursed curs ever sets foot in this town.

She continues to shoot until the last gnoll is dead or fled beyond her sight. Once she has finished destroying the remnants of the pack, she returns to see what her companions have found.

Amir ignores the howling and screaming around him to focus on picking over the corpse. Though the old rogue lacks magical sight, he does have an eye for value. He reckons the thick belt of some strange leather and a tarnished Bestial buckle holds arcane power, as well as the unholy amulet still somehow hanging off the headless gnoll. The full plate is masterwork and obviously of great value and finally, the greataxe itself probably enhanced.

Sorry I missed the Archon chopping off the priest's head.

Karethas drops his chin to his chest with relief as the remaining gnolls flee. He appears next to Varkata as his spell expires. As Kzrira flies off he flicks his head towards the battle market, "There are friends still missing. Let's get in there and find them." He turns to the archon, "Bring the body inside while we look for our friends. I will not have the gnolls scavenge it for their advantage." He walks confidently towards the gates.

She adds, "Though that key will probably help."

Call it what you will but I believe my actions show cool headed pragmatism. I'm not looking for spoils, I'm looking for shit to kill all these other creatures with, lol. That was the chain of thought anyway. A rod or wand to UMD some hyena's with or something, lol.

Convinced that the priest holds no further power in the moment Amir hooks a hand on the neck of the armor and drags the body onto his carpet. Looking around the rogue will be ready to fight on or, if it seems appropriate in the moment, move toward the door of the great brass covered building, key in hand.

Amir efficiently loads the corpse onto his flying carpet and with key in hand, the Heroes move to the great brass tower. Few things are ever so easy though and they find no keyhole in the heavy brass gates. Come to think of it, the rather plain iron key doesn't resemble anything one would expect to open the shining magical bastion.

Having harassed and killed as many fleeing gnolls as possible, Kzrira guides the metallic griffon back down to where Amir is.

How do we get in? I believe there is a genie in there that needs to be sent back to the realm of fire.

Varkata suggests, "Maybe we should search in there where the beast and the gnoll emerged? Might be a clue on how to get in, or something that key actually opens"

Did we neglect picking up a new Wand of CLW? I was sure we had.

If we did get another wand I can't find it in the thread but I vaguely remember something about it so my search-fu might be off.

YEs, let's check where the priest came from...

Uncertain how to enter the Brazen Redoubt, the Heroes head back through the dark quiet streets to the defiled temple looking for some lock that the key might fit.

The entrance to the temple is filled with rubble from the broken stone wall that once covered the battered doors. The entry annex is scarred by fire and covered in more rabble from the cracked walls. The stink of gnolls, urine and garbage fills the great prayer hall. Across the domed room, the raised dais is flanked by piles of burning trash that eerily light the defiled apse. All the golden accouterments of the Abadarians have been stripped and the remains cobbled into a makeshift idol of the many-legged maw.

The adventurers make their way through the despoiled temple of the God of Wealth finding nothing left of value. Finally, they find a locked sacristy with a keyhole to match the corroded iron key.

Varkata shakes her head, her distaste for the defiling clear, "We will need to reconsecrate this place... though I'm not sure that the Lord of the Vault would appreciate the Drunken Hero's work in this case."

She nods at the door, "Hopefully, that leads to a way into the Brazen Redoubt... though I think I'd be happier if the Old Man checked the door, just in case."

"I don't remember there being any passages between the buildings from when we last assaulted the town, and we searched both buildings thoroughly then. I believe that if we pull some resources together, we can break through the gates leading into the Battle Market. My Ring of the Ram and maybe a summoned creature or two, could be sufficient to break them."

I'm moving 400 miles the weekend after this and there are a hundred and one things to do. My posting maybe spotty until after the 22nd, feel free to bot me or move on without my input if I am holding back progress.

Amir finds no traps and the key unlocks the door. Upon opening it, the Heroes are subjected to another stench. Amir's flaming blade reveals the pitiful source in a moment. Three priests of Abadar in soiled robes and weak from hunger blink up at the light. It takes a moment to realize that one of the captives is Zayifed, the high priest, now reduced to squalor in a vault of his own temple.

Kzrira looks at the priests.
Time to get up my friends. We have efreet and demon worshippers to remove from this town.

Karethas covers his nose and mouth with a handkerchief as he casts Prestidigitation, cleansing the worst of the filth. He gives Kzrira an eyeroll before addressing the priests. "Thank Sarenae that they did not kill you! Come out of there!" He pulls his own waterskin to give to the priests as he urges the others to give them some food. Distancing himself from the priests quickly, he continues to cleanse them with Prestidigitation. Through his handkerchief he asks, "Do you know where Faelar is being held? What about where any others are being held?"

Karethas' cantrips freshen the air and remove the grime and filth from the poor priests. They rise and slowly, cautiously step out on stiff legs. They thank their rescuers and Zayfid replies, "The temple was captured early on by the dread Efreet. We were defrocked and have been locked up here since the beginning. The Beast's minion barely gave us enough to survive taunting that he was saving us for a great sacrifice. I do not know what has happened to any others." The priest look sadly around. "Oh, what have they done to the temple?"

Varkata says angrily, Nothing that true faith cannot repair on trying... And that they haven't already paid for with their lives."

She takes a breath to calm herself, then asks, "I don't suppose you overheard then talk about a way into the Brass Tower? Maybe while they were taunting you."

Amir is quick to take to guiding Zayfid to a better place to rest and produces a blanket, water skin, rations and so on as they ask after entrance to the temple.

YEs, do think back. Anything that help us get in.

"No." The priest sighs and his hand goes to his neck. "If only I had a holy symbol. I might be of more use."

Amir digs in his bag and pulls out a wooden holy symbol of Abadar, Would this work?

Zayifid stands and bows deeply as he accepts Amir's holy symbol. "Thank you, my friend. This can help us all," he says reverently. By the light of Amir's sword, the priest moves quickly through the ruined temple shaking his head in sorrow. Once back out in the night, he breathes deeply and gathers his strength saying a prayer with the wooden key squeezed between his palms.

"Now then, let us see this Brass Tower." Once before the still silent and seemingly impenetrable tower, the priest again prayers and studies the doors. "If there is one thing that a priest of Abadar should know about, it is locks," he says with a slight smile.

"This door is not held by any physical means, but by magic locks." He looks to Varkata and Karethas. [b]"Do you have the means to dispel magic?"{/b]

A chagrined Karethas rolls his eyes, [b]"In all the excitement I forgot to even cast a simple Detect Magic." He pushes up the sleeves of his robes and casts Dispel Magic, his mouth a thin line of determination.

Sadly, no. Took Resistance instead of guidance.

Karethas finds himself rather unpracticed in the abjuration school and even with a quick benediction from Zayifid his spell fails to open the great doors.
