Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas strokes his beard, "It's something about the wording of Varakata's divination: 'The eaters of The Eater of Magic'. It makes me wonder if they have partaken of it's essence." He nods at Kzrira, "If magic works, then flying will give us the advantage."
Varkata Steeleye |
Varkata chuckles, "You just lacked a cleric with sufficient inebriation then. Besides, I could always let you walk on the air and snipe from above their reach... assuming spells work."
Kzrira Maiwith |
Kzrira smiles.
I do not need to be above them. Get me within 500 paces and I can hit with fair accuracy. If the magic works here, I can probably shoot to the skeleton by simply going up 50 or 100 paces.
Sheik Voodoo |
He nods at Kzrira, "If magic works, then flying will give us the advantage."
Gen settles upon the wizard's shoulder and he can feel her shiver as she speaks softly near his ear. "Be careful, Master. I can feel the dead zone. It goes beyond the great bones and even higher than the spire."
Kzrira Maiwith |
When Amir mentions the cloud, Kzrira sighs once more.
That cannot be good.
She will ready an action to shoot at it as soon as it is within range, unless Karethas or someone tells her to hold her shots. She will use a cold iron arrow just in case.
Readied Action: Attack-cold iron arrow: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35 <-- minus any range penalty
Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Confirm Crit (if it has a crit possibility): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34
Damage: 2d8 + 14 ⇒ (2, 4) + 14 = 20
Great rolls, watch it not be an enemy or attackable.
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas nods at Gen, "Since you can sense it, can you tell if it will hurt you?"
Karethas looks around for cover, if none presents itself then he will prepare to use Tempest to cast Wind Wall if that seems like it could provide some cover.
Varkata Steeleye |
Varkata says, "Might that be our 'host' coming to see us?"
Sheik Voodoo |
Karethas nods at Gen, "Since you can sense it, can you tell if it will hurt you?"
"I do not know what will happen to me inside the anti-magic zone. We may have to find out, however." She look apprehensively at the nearing cloud and you can now see shards of whirling metal are disturbing the black scorched dust of the battle isle. As it draws near it becomes clear that the glittering metal is a swarm of broken blades and shattered armor acting as as if a plague of locust!
Kzrira releases a shot into the swarming steel to absolutely no effect.

Varkata says, "Too late. Where's a rust monster when you need one?" She pushes her way out of the cloud and rushes toward the others, calling upon the Drunken Hero for aid as she does, turning and hurling a concussive blast of sound at the blade-storm.
Sound Burst: 1d8 ⇒ 8 (Sonic, fort DC 16 or stunned for 1 round -- and, I assume +50% since it's a swarm)
Varkata Steeleye |
That's the plan, I think.
Kzrira Maiwith |
Yup. Retreat into the magic dead zone and see what happens.
Unless it is a really fast swarm, we should be far enough ahead to decide what to do if it follows.
Cap'n Voodoo |
Indeed, the steel swarm is not fast enough to keep up with the fleeing heroes though Varkata's pause to cast a spell allows the whirling shards to engulf her again knicking and slashing before she breaks out in a full run after the others. Varkata- 12 slash and pierce
There is a weird heavy feeling as you broach what must be the boundary of the anti-magic field. The swarm stops a short distance away as if it is familiar with the place and whirls ripping up dust in its frustration. Those within are not stilled however, and you hear a howling hunger as a dozen emaciated loping creatures rush out of the great bones.
40 from the steel swarm and 100 from the bones
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas shrugs and says with a smile, "The fire or the pan, either way we are cooked." He gives a half-hearted attempt to cast Mage Armor, "Just to be sure."
Kzrira Maiwith |
Hoping to be able to stop the undead appearing creatures, Kzrira begins to fire at them. She uses cold iron arrows just in case these creatures are susceptible to the metal.
At least we can fight these. . . . I hope.
She will aim at the closest ghoul/ghast creature.
Attack-rapid shot: 1d20 + 15 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 15 - 2 = 28
Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Attack-rapid shot: 1d20 + 15 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 15 - 2 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Attack-rapid shot: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 10 - 2 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
None of the shots are perfect, but some do land.
As she fires, she calls over her shoulder to Karethas.
Any clue what these are? Are they resistant to any materials?
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Amir pulls his swords and attempts to see if the one will ignite, otherwise he prepares to meet the creatures when they advance...
Sheik Voodoo |
One scavenger falls and another stumbles severely wounded from Kzrira's arrow. Amir draws his blades in preparation. They are well made if inert in the wake of the Eater of Magic. Gen has disappeared. Perhaps trapped in the Tempest Staff which feels dull and heavy in Karethas' grip. A question hangs in the air for Varkata.
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas backs up until his back is nearly touching the anti-magic boundary. "Undead have never been something I have had the interest in studying, sorry."

Varkata draws her blade and steps next to Amir, looking at the threats and narrowing her eyes, Ghasts... That's not good...
She grimaces and says, "Those'd be ghasts. Bigger, faster, stronger, smellier ghouls... So much so that the stink of them will make you sicker than mouldy mash rotgut, and their claws can lock your muscles up tighter than Abadar's vault."
She nods at Kzrira's question and puts her hand to the mug hanging from her ear, somewhat afraid of the answer as she reaches out and tries to fill herself with the heady power of the Drunken God, reaching for it with more desperation than she had in years, hoping to release it gently to burn away her wounds....
Trial channel - I may be the only one hurt, but if it works... well, it's a good thing.
Sheik Voodoo |
Karethas backs up as far as he dares and holds the dead wood in front of himself. If Varkata's god can hear her, he can't help her and her prayer goes unanswered as the hungry dead rush forward.
The stink hits you first, quite literally as you are buffeted by the gut wrenching stench. All-fort DC 15 or sickened for 5 minutes. She sighs, If I survive this, we are going to have a chat, you and I..., then shouts, "Maybe the blades out there will chop up the undead? Worst case, I like our odds with magic way better than without.", and tries to stand, hoping that the steel of her breastplate turns away enough claws that she makes it to her feet.
Kzrira Maiwith |
I think you get a standard action as well. Standing up us a move action.

I did not realize that Varkata was down. Kzrira will shoot at the ghasts next to Varkata, starting with the one to Varkata's right, C11, and then going clockwise from there. -- Sorry Karethas, next round.

The front line falters under the overwhelming stink of corruption. Varkata manages an awkward strike before she is overrun. Amir retches and flails ineffectively at the hungry dead that swarm his companion. Torn between the frightened wizard and the swarmed priestess, Kzrira fires at the mob. One falls to a pair of arrows. Another is further injured.
It is unclear whether he acts in unthinking panic, self sacrifice, or merely the inability to function without his magic, but Karethas moves back out of the dead zone.
