Sheik Voodoo |
Ack, sorry. Didn't think that our opponent could hover so I figured I was able to go without issues. That not being the case, I'll withdraw, no spell this round.
not hovering. He's hanging out with Karethas on the rock. I don't think a Fly spell allows hovering either, but it's kind of hard to work with that unless the creature has a fly-by attack feat so it's all good.
Sheik Voodoo |
OK, I do feel a slight tinge of guilt about this, but I am a cruel, cruel GM.
Bruised and a bit disoriented by the thrashing, Varkata swoops back toward Amir in retreat. Only when she nears him and the lammasu disappears again does she recall the limited range of her invisibility purge spell. The watery orb rushes upward again and hits leaving a leonine bubble for a moment before the creature beaks free spraying droplets through the air.
alright, the lammasu hasn't moved so 50% miss for each shot from Kzrira and Amir. The dice will say whether he falls or not.
Kzrira Maiwith |
Miss chance - first attack: 1d100 ⇒ 61 <-- Hit
Miss chance - second attack: 1d100 ⇒ 90 <-- Hit
Sometimes the dice are not completely evil (unlike certain Sheiks).
Sheik Voodoo |
ah, but Amir's luck always sucks! miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 56
BAH! should have waited for him to roll! and punch drunk wizard- nl: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3
The hail storm of blunted arrows from Kzrira and a lucky shot from Amir finally wear down the guardian of the damned oasis. At least that is what it seems when Karethas hears a moan and feels something large and unseen plummet past him to impact the desert floor below.
Varkata Steeleye |
Wasn't worried about it - figured it would have to enter the sphere to attack us.
Kzrira Maiwith |
Kzrira walks over while stashing her bow within her magical quiver.
This has to be the most obstinate creature I have ever seen. What do we do with him? We can tie him up and heal him. Or just leave him. For some reason, I think that we should heal him as he no doubt has information that will be useful to us.
She then looks over at Karethas.
And, I suppose we should bandage the human punching bag. He really needs to learn to stand behind me rather than sitting on a large rock.
Varkata Steeleye |
Varkata asks with a chuckle, "Can I hide behind you, too?". She then says, "We should find and stabilize him, just to be sure the fall didn't kill him. There is enough evil in this world that we shouldn't be destroying the good.... and then I'll look at healing."
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas stands up and brushes himself off. He seems abashed by Kzrira's words. "I didn't want to expend any more resources and hoped it would leave me out of it if I was not actively attacking it. It was stupid of me to underestimate it. I think we should heal it barely into consciousness and see if it has changed it's tune, so to speak."
Kzrira Maiwith |
Kzrira nods in agreement.
I will keep another of my blunt arrows aimed at it. I hate doing this to a clearly good, although stubborn and full of itself, creature.
Kzrira will nock another blunt arrow and stand ready to return the crazy cat to unconsciousness if needed.
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Sorry connection issues but I should be set for the foreseeable.
Amir is quiet as the group preps to work on the creature, having no animosity towards the animal but not interested in another altercation. Amir does place himself on the other side of the creature with swords still drawn, offering a "what?" type shrug to anyone who might look askance at him...
Kzrira Maiwith |
Kzrira lowers her bow, but keeps the arrow nocked just in case.
Why do you continue to refer to this as a fool's mission? We are those who destroyed the Carrion King. We freed the town of Kelmarane from years of gnollish tyrrany. We are opening trade routes that have been closed for years, if not decades.
The small archer licks her lips and she considers how to continue.
I understand that you wish to keep innocents from harming themselves and becoming corrupt undead. But, why not aid those who have proven themselves competent and capable? We have bested you in combat, and, although I apologize for having had to draw blood, we did so in such a manner as to minimize your injuries. Something that with a bow is no small task against a powerful guardian as yourself.
Thus, I shall ask that which I asked earlier. What aid can you provide us. I understand if you do not wish to join us in this quest, but any knowledge that you have wisely gathered over your many years watching over this cursed place would be of great benefit for our preparations. What type of creatures are here? How many? Are they organized, or simply chaotic? Do they posses magical or divine capabilities? And, anything else that might aid us in eliminating the curse that has despoiled this oasis for these many years.
Sheik Voodoo |
The big leonine creature stands wearily and settles its wings against its sides. It casts a spell to heal itself of some of the damage it has taken and then sits on its haunches gazing at Kzrira with the piercing blue eyes above its aquiline nose and beard that matches the color of its mane.
"Very well. You have proved yourself competent though killing gnolls and outnumbering me are hardly heroic feats. I see I cannot dissuade you though I have done my honorable best."
"I am Ashraf-Asim, sometimes called Hound of Ragathiel. This place was once known as the Deep Well of Paradise, a testament to the mercy of Sarenrae. The lovely shrine beside the cool water quenched the thirst and soothed the dusty blistered feet of many travellers until the coming of a Gebbite vampire and necromancer named Rotaimvei. Whether his goal was dark vengeance or just capricious evil, I do not know. Whatever his aims, he succeeded. The four imams that once served the thirsty, weary and injured that sought succor here were transformed into unholy creatures like the Gebbite. Though merely minion vampires and not as powerful as their master, they have still overcome far too many brave fools."
"Like a drop of blood in clear water, the taint of Urgathoa has diffused into the oasis corrupting the water, the plants, the creatures that lived there. None who have come to exorcize the blighted oasis have succeeded or survived. The last was a brave paladin of Sarenrae... and a dear friend. I cannot forgive myself for not stopping her. Her soul is forever lost now. Damned to forever haunt the shrine within."
"I have some ability to heal. If you wish, I will mend what harm I have caused you, but I must humbly request one last time that you turn aside from the doom that awaits you within."
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Well we have been charged to make this place right or put in the best fight we can trying. Looking to Varkata and Karethas, Do we have what we would need for such creatures? Cold iron is in ample supply but what of other materials to deal with the like of vampires and the dead?
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas shrugs, "I really don't have any expertise in the undead. I know silver is often of use with them rather than cold iron, which is more for extra-planar creatures. I don't know if it works against vampires specifically though. It sounds like this Rotaimvei is a magic user as well, and that may make him a much more challenging foe than the Carrion King. We should be very cautious. I'd say we want to go in first thing in the morning and make sure to be out before evening. Also, it sounds like he is saying the paladin has come back as a ghost as well. We have history with those at least and I think we found magic weapons to be somewhat effective."
Kzrira Maiwith |
Kzrira looks to the others.
I have only a few silver arrows. Twenty I believe. If we are fighting creatures that are vulnerable to silver, it might be wise to return to the city or an outpost to purchase some more.
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas sighs in relief that Rotaimvei himself is not at the oasis. "Creatures effected by silver can often also be effected by magical weapons. There is a spell that makes ammunition magical. I do not know it, but perhaps Varkata might know it."
Varkata Steeleye |
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Varkata says, "I have heard a number of stories about vampires, though it is hard to separate out the fanciful tales from truth when you learn your lore over cups. I believe that silver is the right of it, though enchantment is also necessary.... and sunlight, for certain."
She turns to the leonine creature and says, "I would gladly accept your healing... and any advice you could give us. I wonder if there might be a way to separate the minions from their master... erode away his power, as it were, before we face him..."
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Voodoo would a history check maybe give me an idea about what item Rotaimvei might have left behind?
KNOWLEDGE HISTORY CHECK:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14(1 rank, +3 class skill, +4 Int)
Sheik Voodoo |
Karethas has never heard of this particular Gebbite necromancer before the present moment and Varkata can add little more to the conversation. The lammasu heals the wounded with his curative magics and then gives a gallows laugh at Varkata's request for guidance. "My advice remains the same, turn back before it is too late."
With a flap of his powerful wings he returns to the top of the rock and lays down with front paws enfolded, splitting his attention between the party and the nearby oasis.
So what's the plan?
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas strokes his goatee thoughtfully, "I think we should spend a night in preparation and start tomorrow fresh. There are some spells I have memorized which will not be helpful in this situation and Varkata is probably in a similar situation."
Kzrira Maiwith |
We discussed buying arrows, but it was mostly about how many Cold Iron arrows I could get. Never really thought about silver.
Here --> [url=http://paizo.com/campaigns/SheikVoodoosKatapeshNights/gameplay&page=129#6414]Post 6414 -- I mentioned that I could get a ton of arrows. We never really completed this discussion and then I forgot about it.
Currently I only have 20 arrows unless someone has a spell that would make the arrows be considered to be silver.
-------
Kzrira looks to her companions.
Unfortunately, as I said, I have very few silver arrows. Only a single quiver full. If we are going to be fighting creatures only harmed by silver, it might be prudent to go back to the last town and see if I can buy another 100 or so arrows. They are not that expensive, just not something that I had purchased.
Sheik Voodoo |
Currently I only have 20 arrows unless someone has a spell that would make the arrows be considered to be silver.
Abundant ammunition(level 1 Cleric spell) would replace any silver arrows shot for the duration. I know I favor drawn out melees, but I don't see any lasting 60 rounds.
Varkata Steeleye |
Varkata nods, "I cannot silver weapons, but I can make sure you don't run out of arrows... And prepare several scorching rays."

Nice. I knew about that spell, but for some reason thought it was a wizard spell that Karethas did not have. Also, with Gravity Bow being a "Personal" spell, for some reason I foolishly figured Abundant Ammunition would be the same.
Definitely a spell worth memorizing as a level 1 cleric spell, perhaps 2 or 3x. Will have to look into getting a Wand at some point.
Varkata Steeleye |
It's one of those spells that, realistically, beats the heck out of existing items. (Who wouldn't enchant quivers with it?)
Kzrira Maiwith |
Yeh, as I said, I had not looked at it, but thought that it was a wizard only (or wizard/ranger like gravity bow) spell. It will definitely extend the use of my few silver arrows.
Kzrira looks to the others and the at the crazy, and relaxed, cat.
Can we safely make camp here near where you watch guard? We know that the oasis itself will be a test, and will need to be rested and restored before we head in. If you can stand guard over us, it will give us the greatest chance for success.
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas nods and starts to look for a likely place to set up camp.
I have reset my spells. Varkata, you may want still have Magic Circle against Evil. If I recall, vampires have some charm type powers.
Amir Awad Hajjir |
I got magic words...but a bad wil save. Here's hoping I roll well if they do charm?
Our thanks master guardian. I know it must be hard to see others risk when you feel certain of their doom but it is our way to try, even if the odds are poor in your eyes. I appreciate you giving us the chance to make a difference here.
Varkata Steeleye |
Varkata nods at Karethas' suggestion, "I will do that, but I will need to shed my dispel magic. I'm also trying to decide whether I'm better off with a searing light, or casting daybreak ammunition on Kzira."
Sheik Voodoo |
before you start resetting spells, you have to sleep through the night.
After the sun sets, strange and unsettling cries arise from the heavy growth of the oasis. The moon is bright overhead when a mist is detected flowing from the thicket of palms.
"The Unholy Imams approach," Ashraf-Asim warns as you grab your gear.

In answer to Varkata's dilemma, Karethas strokes his chin again and considers, "That could be very helpful, Kzrira's bow has been our most powerful weapon to this point. My only concern is if she is somehow disabled, what would our options be? Either spell could be useful, but assuming we can keep her in the fight the ammunition spell would probably be more damaging overall to the vampires." He suddenly shakes his head, "No, if we put too many of our eggs in one basket I think we are courting disaster." His head snaps toward the leonine creature as it announces their foes approaching. "Can you keep them at bay, Sahibi?"
Sheik Voodoo |
"Can you keep them at bay, Sahibi?"
The lammasu nods with a single shake of his mane. "I have spent much power healing us. I am not surprised they emerge having heard our battle and hoping to find the victor weakened and easy prey. I do not think they expected to find so many though. Stay near me and I shall ward you with a magic circle against evil. I have a few radiant bolts to burn them as well."
Kzrira Maiwith |
Round 1
Seeing the creatures approaching, Kzrira calls to Karethas.
What are these? Any specific type of arrow I should use?
If Karethas mentions a particular type of arrow, Kzrira will use that.
As usual, almost like an involuntary reaction, the bow appears in Kzrira's hand and begins to fire. Although it does not have the cool to the touch feeling of the Tempest bow, the new weapon is still a fine piece of work.
Attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29 <-- only single attack as I assume drawing the bow was a move action
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 <-- normal arrow unless Karethas says otherwise. +2 if these are somehow gnolls
Varkata Steeleye |
Since I have last night's spells and not the new ones I'd picked..
Varkata draws her longsword as she steps closer to her leonine companion, placing her other hand to the holy symbol dangling from her ear, loudly calling upon the Drunken Hero to reinforce her companions and weaken their foes. "Cayden Cailean's strength fill us, and displeasure splash upon you."
Cast Prayer -> 40' radius burst grants a +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks -- and the baddies take a –1 penalty on the same.

Amir knows better than to waste time shooting, he pulls his swords and stands ready with the others.

Karethas reaches into his spell pouch and flings dust towards the Imans that sparkles in the firelight. After an incantation sparkling dust explodes in a cloud around the Imans.
Glittering Dust. Ref Save DC 18 or blinded
Sheik Voodoo |
The four black robed figures run across the moonlit desert to close with the party and you now see they are still armed with scimitars though they serve Sarenrae no longer. Kzrira's arrow hits one and it curses loudly though it does not slow. At the sound of Varkata's prayer, the hooded heads turn toward her and eyes gleam malevolently with light not reflected from the moon. A blast of glittering dust catches two and they are finally slowed though not stopped.
The other two charge Amir as he draws his blades, but are thrown off by the combined auras of the warding circle and prayer. The scimitars miss their mark. The blinded pair slow feeling their way forward to the priestess. A bolt of radiant light arcs past Amir from behind and the lammasu growls in annoyance at his clumsy miss.
