So, I’ve been on the boards for a little bit and I’m looking at running another game here on the boards. A bit of background on me: I’ve been running games for over a decade and a half and most of that is an edition or incarnation of D&D. I love games of every stripe, so I’ve taken at least a look at most many things in different genres, but my knowledge is far from all encompassing. I like to have my posts organized, legible, and clearly marked.

I’m aiming for a group size of 5 to 6 characters, depending largely on how many interesting submissions I get.

My expectations of a player:

  • Able to post once daily. I understand that life gets in the way, so long as it feels like you’re posting daily, I’m good. Issues come up in my own life as well, but I’d ask that you inform me if something is coming up that is going to keep you away.

  • Quality posting. I prefer not to have to root through spelling mistakes and terrible grammar. Consistent structure is a boon.

  • The ability to work in a team together. I don’t mind party conflict as long as people are enjoying it. It can often add spice to the game. I’ve seen this only happen amongst people that communicate and are up for it. Which is to say, not often. Thus, I am leery of it.

  • Keep talking, even if it is only in the discussion thread. Ask questions, be proactive rather than reactive. I don’t mind handling questions for things that you might even be the least little unsure about. PM me about problems, plans, goals, if you had an issue with a call I made, so on and so forth. Communication is key to me.

  • Roleplaying. I love engaging others in telling stories rather than playing a skirmish game. Personally, I still feel that this is one of my weak points, and I want to have players that engage and challenge not only myself, but also the other players.

  • People who are willing to do risky things. I like to reward those that try to pull off unlikely, but epic stunts. It's not about trying to do anything that comes to mind, but rather about throwing some memorable actions into play.

Stat Stuff:

Building a Character:

I’m usually good with anything from Paizo, but I’m typically leery of 3rd party stuff. That said, feel free to ask about anything. I reserve the right to veto anything.
Point-Buy: 25 points (I like more powerful characters)
Races: Core, APG, UM, UC, ARG, BoA, BoF.
Classes: Core, APG, UM, UC, ARG.
Hit Points: Max at 1st, Average + 1 after 1st
Starting Wealth: Max for Class
Traits: 2 + 1 Campaign
Alignment: Any, although see above about teamwork. Alignment cannot be used as an excuse to not get along with the party and contribute.
Backgrounds: I expect a well-written background that ties the character into the AP. At least a paragraph in length, although what I’m looking for is an entertaining read.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I’ll keep the recruitment board open until next week, likely around Thursday or Friday. I’ll announce the close at least a day beforehand. If people wish to roleplay amongst their prospects, I’m game, but please keep it out of the recruitment thread. I’ll make a separate thread for it if there’s enough interest.

Interested! Perhaps you can shed some more light on which AP you are planning to run so the background may be tied in?

Count me as very interested. I will submit a character in a bit.

Pretty sure it will be Shattered Star like in the thread title.

dotting for interest.

Yup, Shattered Star alright. I'd also like to note that I like to change things up a bit, but keep everything roughly in line. So expect some things to be different and new bits to leak in, but otherwise it'll be as per written.

I'll be throwing something together for this tonight. I'll see what I can come up with.

Interested.

Emilian is a nonstandard fighter, ex-gladiator, and Pathfinder, eagerly awaiting his first assignment.

Dropping a word here on my interest. I'll stop by in a bit with a concept fleshed out.

I am interested as well but I would like to ask two things. First, does this AP contain much that would spoil surprises regarding Rise of the Runelords? I ask because I am playing in a Runelords campaign and don't want to have any surprises ruined. Second, does Shattered Star have an apocalyptic theme in any way? When I read the players' guide I got a slight sense of that but I could be well off the mark thinking that. If there is such a theme it would affect what kind of character I would submit for the campaign.

Currently I play in two campaigns: Rise of the Runelords, as a binder, and Skull and Shackles as a ranger. The first has been going on for about three years and the other for a few months. I post consistently and am more concerned with having fun than meta-gaming. I play the characters they way that I think they would react to situations based on their personalities and goals.

Here is the submission for Tanner Nielsen.

Sjurd
LN Male Ifrit
Sorcerer (Elemental - Fire) 1
Campaign Trait: Ex-Sczarni

Description
Hair: Red
Eyes: Yellow
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 180lb

You see a well-groomed ifrit man with flame-red hair swept back from his face . His eyes are a piercing yellow, with small flecks of silver near the iris. His skin is the color of hot iron, with high cheek bones, and a strong jaw. He is dressed in a tight-fitting black and gray scholar's robe and with a rust-brown cloak. He holds nothing in his hands and a dagger at his belt. He is quite tall, with a slender frame and straight posture.

Personality
Sjurd leads personal interactions with a no-nonsense, business-like attitude that comes from several years of mercenary work. He works hard to overcome his negative attitude to see the good in people, but has been disappointed enough in life to not expect much from those around him. He is loyal and courageous to those who have his friendship - while terrible and vindictive to those who attack or betray him.

Background
Sjurd's family - at least his human side - traces its lineage to the Land of the Linnorm Kings, home of the reclusive and brutal northern folk. His forefathers found ready work as mercenaries, campaigning during the harsh winters and returning in the spring with bounties for their family. This established a tradition of sorts, with each passing generation choosing whether to take up the mantle of 'coin-sword.'

Sjurd's father took a job protecting a flotilla of merchant vessels seeking to deliver a shipment foodstuffs from Magnimar to Korvosa. Unfortunately, pirates attacked the ships just outside of the Mushfens and sent Sjurd's father tipping over the side during the melee. He washed ashore and was found by a passing group of Shoanti, one of which was a fire priestess of Gozreh who took a liking to the fierce northman. After several nights spent in 'adult activities,' he was dropped off in Magnimar. Several months later, he awoke to find a small baby left in a basket outside his inn door. His new son bore the tall frame and angular features of his people, yet he was also marked by the blood of his mother's divine connection to flames.

Sjurd spent many years under the tutelage of his father in the ways of mercenary life and learning his own inborn talents. Striking out on his own, he was eager to make a name for himself as a spellcaster for hire. He quickly fell in with the Sczarni, working as a spellslinger and arcane enforcer.

Though he spent several years as a member of one of Magnimar’s various Sczarni gangs, he never fit in with the rest of his settled, metropolitan brethren. He found them too sedate for his liking. The Pathfinder Society in particular recognized his wanderlust and potential as an agent, and on more than one occasion he impressed or bamboozled their agents with his street smarts and finesse. Over the years, he fell out of favor with the Sczarni, and eventually left to pursue interests outside of simple thuggery, though he still remembers the lessons his criminal relations taught him.

Andoran

Dotting for interest.

I have a Sylph mobile fighter idea I've been wanting to play quite badly. I've got a rough background for her but it needs a lot of fleshing out. I've got a busy day, but I'll try and have something up by tonight.

Taldor

I'd like to throw my hat in the "Interested and Dotting" ring. I'd like to see what everyone else is putting up for ideas before I even think about comitting to something. Thinking a double klar Shoanti, though.

Intrigued, though with a concept forming that might require some generosity from the DM.

Would you allow a Gnome who has grown up among dwarves to take the Forgemaster archetype?

@Bill: Yeah, there is one major spoiler with this campaign right at the outset, as well as for Curse of the Crimson Throne and Second Darkness. This AP is assumed to have taken place after those three (RotR, CotCT, and SD), and thus part of the background for what is going on in Varisia currently is the outcomes of those APs.

As for the apocalyptic feel, it depends on what you're asking about. It's more of a "doom lingers on the horizon and intrepid heroes need to stop it," than a Final Fantasy 6 "the bad-guy wins in the middle and we're trying to set things right," or something akin to Fallout or Wasteland where the world has already gone to hell. More typical save the world kinda stuff.

@Mark: I'm not opposed to it. Draw it up and if the flavor feels right, I'm cool with it.

Interested and dotting.

Excellent good, I appreciate the reply. I'll let the concept sit for a while and marinate before putting the character forward.

The long term goal is to take the Skyseeker Prestige Class, but I'm tossing up a Cleric or Druid entry into it.

I can attest to Mark's ability to craft an entertaining and well written character. Stiehl9s is also quite good.

I am going to submit a dwarf fighter. I have a couple of good concepts to work out.

Thanks for the reply. In light of that I will bow out and save this AP until I am done with the Runelords game.

Happy gaming everyone!

I completely understand that. I don't want to ruin RotR for you. Good luck, happy gaming, and enjoy the ride. :)

I took a look at the Skyseeker Prestige Class and I must say that I like the flavor. Very fitting for a Pathfinder dwarf (or those raised by dwarves). Plus, I got to learn some more Golarion lore from looking up the lore surrounding the class. That's always a bonus.

Dotting for interest. I'm interested in building a an Elven Ranger, an ex Celwynian guard hopeful, who is now a bit disenfranchized with the whole elven establishment in Golarion. This would be tied into the events of Second Darkness. Likely a CN or CG character with problems with conformity.

will submit character shortly, very interested in this new AP.

Dm:
any objection to me playing a fetchling with the feat "pass for human" (+10 disguise checks to pass for human) I dunno if itd be more trouble than it's worth but I want to play a fetchling who does his best to not reveal his extra-planar origins.

i dont know if this would even work trying to keep from other PCs but it seems like a fun idea. class would be a summoner (shadow caller archetype)

he would essentially be trying to pass for an osirian in masking robes at all times.

CorvusRed:
It works for me. He'd need something to cover his eyes, as they're typically pupilless. Otherwise, they seem close enough to human to be easily able to pass for one.

DM Bound Shade, sent you a PM.

@Vixen: Yup, just read through it and responded.

Dotting for interest.

Interested, though not sure what.

Interested in participating with a ranger, will have something set up probably tonight.

Cade Greenbottle, presented for your consideration. There are still a few loose ends to tie up in the character design, but more than enough should be complete to get the character's concept across.

I do not possess much details regarding the adventure path itself (which is a good thing imo) - shall I take the notes from the Paizo site about this AP, and wrap my background around that?

The information on the site and, in particular, the Shattered Star Player's Guide should be sufficient, but if you have specific questions that are not answered by those, please ask.

Also dotting for interest - I've an idea for a Qadiran sorcerer with the efreeti bloodline.

I'll be posting a current list of characters as often as I can to keep everything straight.

So, right now, I've got two complete (or mostly) characters submitted as well as a number of interests and prospects. I'll just worry about the completed ones:

Character List:

Skill User
Cade Greenbottle - Halfling Rogue (burglar): Exchange Agent

Arcane Caster
Sjurd - Ifrit Sorcerer: Ex-Sczarni

Dotting for interest. My concept for a character would be a Human Cleric (Cloistered) of Erastil. I'm not tied to the deity at the point.

I'm actually going to back out of this one. A recent recruitment thread got me really jonesing for an urban game and this looks like it'll be out and about adventuring.

I'm slowly realizing that I may need to strong arm a GM into running an urban game, but I'll burn that bridge when I get there. Thanks for the opportunity.

DM Bound Shade wrote:

Thank you for the tip at this one - I will check it out.

One question, you have min max beginning stats?

i am interested. initially i would like to play a necromancer (not sure if arcane or divine, and i suggest this because i dont see any character concepts posted so far that would cause a huge party schism if i played a necromancer (like paladin, etc) although i dont know everyone's alignments).

Interested. I want to do a Aasimar Bard/Cavalier/Battle Herald. Gets awesome at 4th level ish

i would like to put in a KAPENIA DANCER magus. from varisia birthplace of legends. it is over all a weaker archetype, but full of flavor. that is perfect for this adventurer path. i have most of it done, just need to change things to fit your crunch.

Dot for possible interest.

yes i would definitely like to play a Undead Lord Cleric. Not sure on race, i have a couple of ideas that might amuse me (like goblin hahaha). However, i want to be LE, so goblin is likely not going to be my choice.

I suppose Lycanthropes are a big no.

I am looking to play either a martial class barbarian, fighter, or paladin. Working with GM Bound Shade on the race.

Dotting for interest

@Edeldhur: No more than 18 or less than 7 before racial adjustments.

@pavaan: I'll have to look over it, but I imagine it's fine.

@twilsemail: Understood, I'll make a general statement to everyone about the path.

Be sure that you like exploration and dungeon crawling. This AP is very much about the dungeon crawling, and even though there is more to it, it's the AP's major focus.

I'm certainly interested, but I'm going to wait until a couple of recruitment threads finish up shortly before applying. I do not want my enthusiasm to get me in more games than I can handle.

Good Afternoon DM Bound Shade. This is my submission for your Shattered Star campaign. Keeping in mind it was based in Magnimar I choose to create Nadja Cazynsik, a Varisian Human Witch who was raised as among the Sczarni.

Nadja
LE Female Human (Varisian)
Witch Campaign Trait: Ex-Sczarni

Description
Hair: Black
Eyes: Hazel
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 110lb

Across from the table sits petite raven-haired woman. Her hair is rapped up in a bandanna with large gold loop earning and her hands are bedecked with rings. Her eyes are a sparkling hazel, constantly seeming to shift in the candle light from grey to green to brown. Her skin is an olive hue, with high cheek bones, and and a delicate, well formed face. She is wearing several pleated skirts, mostly blacks and greys with the occasional glimpse of red or blue intermixed into the folds, and they are drawn together with a grey fishbone corset over top of a cotton shift. Seeing you enter, a small smile crosses her face, one hand reaching for her Harrow Deck, the other cradling a small black viper. "Greetings stranger. How may Madame Cazynsik be of service?"

Personality
(Lawful Evil) Nadja believes in using society and its laws to benefit herself. Structure and organization elevate those who deserve to rule as well as provide a clearly defined hierarchy between masters and servants. To this end, Nadja support laws and society in order to protect her own concerns. If someone is hurt or suffers because of a law that benefits Nadja, she would simply shrug and continue on her way. The cliché that there is "No honor among thieves" is false when dealing with her. Nadja will always keep her word of honor and uphold any bargains she makes, though you have to be sure you know what you have agreed on. Nadja has a clearly defined code that she lives by. She expects loyalty from those she works with and she would punish disloyalty and treachery with a swift, merciful death. The tenants of her belief, both as a Sczarni and as a Varsian are as follows:

1. Nadja always keep her word of honor.
2. Nadja has no qualms about lying and cheating those not worthy of her
respect.
3. Depending on the situation, Nadja may or may not kill an unarmed or helpless foe.
4. Nadja will never kill (may harm, kidnap) an innocent, particularly a child.
5. Nadja will never kill for pleasure.
6. Nadja will Not resort to inhumane treatment of prisoners, but torture, although distasteful, is a necessary means of extracting information.
7. Nadja will never torture for pleasure.
8. Nadja may or may not help someone in need.
9. Nadja will work with others to attain her goals.
10. Nadja respects honor and self-discipline in others.
11. Nadja will never betray a friend.

Background
Nadja was born in the along the southern reaches of Varisia somewhere between Riddleport and Magnimar in an area known as the Varisian Gulf. As a member of Cazynski tribe she was raised on the roads and paths of Varisia constantly traveling as her tribe wandered from town and settlement to the next. From an early age Nadja learned the intricacies of both real and fake fortune telling from her Mother, as her Mother was taught before by her's and so on. Fast-Talker (trait) / Knowledge (arcane) By the time Nadja was ten she was given her first Harrow Deck, and during her tribes visits to settlements she began to learn the art of grifting Bluff. To her great surprise, Nadja found that the cards, did seem to speak to her in a way that she did not quite understand. When Nadja asked her mother what was happening, the grey haired woman only smiled. Witch 1

In the days and years that followed, Nadja continued to travel with her tribes wagons all along the lost coast. Nadja still carry's the same Harrow Deck she was given years ago. The deck like her, has started to become aged and creased, but still contains an unknown power. Recently her mother and father passed away from old age, and though expected, it was more then she could bear. Rather then staying with the rest of the Cazynsik tribe, she choose to take her things and leave. That was two years ago, and the death of parents still remain her mind, though time has eroded the sting. In the years since then, her one solace has been, Dagon, her mothers pet viper. She doesn't really understand why or how, but she instinctively knows that the bond that her mother once shared with the viper has somehow been passed to her. Familiar: Viper

DM Bound Shade: I hope you like my application. I understand that you might be wary of me playing a Lawful Evil character, but I hope that the tenants I have laid out as to her conduct will put you at ease. I am open to suggestions and feedback. Mechanically, Nadja will acting play several roles within the group. First off, she is very useful as a "face" for the party. With a CHA of 14 and skill points in Intimidate, Bluff and Diplomacy she should be able to interact with others quiet well. She also has four knowledge skill and this will allow her to provide alot of information to the group. This will be supplemented with divination's as she gains levels. Hopefully this will allow the group to avoid any knowledge "road-blocks" during the campaign. Finally Nadja will act as a single target controller/debuffer. At first level her Slumber Hex is quiet powerful and will allow me to lock down one hostile target. At later levels with Cackle, Ill Omen and Evil Eye, I would be putting alot of negatives onto other targets. I can also supplement the party healing via Infernal Healing.

GM Bound Shade, I sent you another pm. Ideas for my background.

Lantern Lodge

I'd love to join Shattered Star, thinking of playing an Elven Magus using both Spell Dancer and Hexcrafter archetypes. The gall would be obsessed with the Varisian Wanderers and have travelled with them for the last 75 years and only recently parted ways after the woman who she saw grow up from toddler to troupe elder and who became her closest friend passed away due to old age, which once more confronted her with her incompatibility with the short-lived races. She grab the Non-traditional Native campaign trait for Varisians if you're ok with it. She may not be a Varisian by birth but she feels more part of them than she feels part of Elven society.

Background and fluff in the making.
