This, their third trip out to the Crow, proves to be a far more relaxed affair than the friends previous tussles with the Tower Girls, the fiendish denizens of the Thassilonian Laboratories and the Derro kidnappers... this time, they have time to draw maps, to make notes about the likely purpose of certain rooms and, for the finest statuary and murals, to sketch and paint...

...but finally, with Teldon finding the concealed door once more, they make their way down the long staircase to the Sihedron Shrine. The doors to the chamber are closed... and from behind them, comes the sound of scuttling.

Before the friends get within hearing distance of the final door, Briana halts them just long enough to call forth a blessing for the battle ahead. Then, when they finally reach the doors she takes a deep breath and looks at her friends before nodding.

"Well, here we go," she murmurs as she begins to charge up her magic - ready to let it go once the doors are opened.

Casting Bless before we get too close to the doors; it'll last for 5 minutes so we should still have plenty of time left on it by the time we get to the doors and get positioned. Briana will ready a casting of Fireball to go off once we kick/push the doors open.

Zee prays to Desna as they approach the doors to the giant spider-creatures. "I plan to summon an entity from the Plane of Fire," she whispers to Teldon.

Ready to witness the horror ahead first-hand, Shadlah stands at the back, attempting to position herself where she can see the doors. Her hands clench into fists, clods of dirt and shards of jagged stone already covering her bare skin.

Shadlah will accept 1 point of burn (taking 5 nonlethal damage) to increase her damage reduction from Flesh of Stone to DR 3/adamantine.
She can gather power before we head in, allowing her to get off a powerful blast straight off the bat, but it's always loud, and could alert the monsters to our presence. Should she do it, or keep the (hopeful) surprise?


It seems that we are all ready to engage with the Shriezyx… time for the GM to move things on I think. If there are any other preparations that people want to do prior to the doors being opened, I’m fine with you retconning them in…

With their goal, the Shard of Greed, so very close… there is a degree of anticipation as the friends ready themselves outside of the Shriezyx’ lair… before, pushing the doors open, the friends discover that the beasts have been far from idle whilst they were in Magnimar – the chamber is liberally coated with webbing and, moving aggressively towards them as the doors open, the ancient servitors of Alaznist are clearly no longer prepared to listen to Teldon nor to enter ‘negotiations’…

As Teldon and Jo push the doors open once more, Briana's eyes widen as she spots the shriezyx already racing towards them with murder clearly written on their features. With a loud cry she releases the magic stored in her palms and sends an orb of fire streaking into the room, which explodes on impact with the far wall.

sorry for the delay- I was trying to work out a little monologue and translate it but it proved too much for my drug addled brain. Plan B...

As they near the bottom of the stairs Teldon drinks his mutagen and an extract of bull's strength. "Ready yourselves," he whispers, "I'll open the doors, if you have any offensive spells or ranged attacks be prepared to unleash them as soon as I do..."

Once Briana and the others indicate they're ready, he conjures the image of an enraged Alaznist once more and swings open the door for her to stride through as the fireball and other attacks erupt. He answers the creature's chittering words with a pronouncement of his own in the ancient tongue...

Thassilonian:
"Our Mistress warned of your treachery- and prescribed your payment: WRATH!!!"

Before heading into the Crow, Zee uses a charge from her wand of mage armor on herself. And just before the confrontation with the shryiex, she casts false life on herself for 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 temporary hp.

As they approach the doors to the shrieyz lair, Zee fans her Harrow deck and gets ready to begin casting a spell.

As the doors swing and the spiders charge, Zee begins casting.

Zee begins casting summon monster II to summon a small fire elemental. The spell has a one-round casting time. The elemental will appear at the very start of Zee's next turn.

Immediately before the doors are opened, Shadah will spend a move action to gather power.

Jaw clenched as she tries to aim around her companions, the Shoanti opens her hands to the elemental plane of earth, allowing jagged shards to punch through her palms and towards the closest creature.

Using an earth blast with the Extended Range infusion and the Empowered metakinesis, aiming at #2. Total burn cost is 2; gather power reduces it to 1, and infusion specialization reduces it to 0.

Extended empowered earth blast: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 includes bless and Deadly Aim
damage: 3d6 + 11 ⇒ (6, 1, 1) + 11 = 19 after empowered, that's 23 damage.


As Teldon pushes the huge doors open, and the Shriezyx declare their intent to relieve Teldon of the Shard he carries, Briana turns the web-choked chamber into an inferno. Gouts of flame roll up the walls and across the ceiling as the creatures' lair becomes a vision of hell...

Joanna, standing ready for their attack, slices her sword into belly of an arachnid as the battle for the possession of the Shard of Greed is joined...

"Teldon, swap with Arsith. That spear of yours should be long enough to hit them from behind us," Joanna calls out as she pushes the shriezyx back from her and stabs forward with her sword again before moving behind the protection of her shield.

Umm, my AC is 18... So I'm pretty sure it missed me? Also, do they have reach? Otherwise, it provokes an AoO because I have reach... based on Jo attacking it seems they don't?

Teldon - even though I have let folks ready actions / coordinate attacks, that was outside of initiative... when the combat officially started, you folks rolled low on initiative and are flat-footed as the Shriezyx attack... You could call it being taken a little by surprise by their immediate charge (they knew you were there through Tremorsense BTW)... and so, the attack hits your flat-footed AC and you can't take an AoO either.

It's little consolation but your rolled AoO would have missed anyway.

Also please roll the Fort Save against poison - and don't forget bonus from Bless

...stepping back, trying to gain the space to stab at the Shriezyx, Teldon brings his spear up... but not before the scuttling monster has closed the space and his advantage lost.

The Shriezyx have the Step Up feat meaning that, once per turn, they can move with their opponents 5ft move (taking a 5ft step as an immediate action). I won't use this feat too often as it messes with the way PbP works - but, given that Teldon rolled a 1 anyway, it doesn't fundamentally change anything this round.

Whilst Joanna, slashing in a wide arc, has to hold tight to her weapon as the blade bounces harmlessly against the arachnid's natural armour...

Caught off-guard by how quickly the shriezyx move through the flames, Briana is slow to react as they clash with Teldon and Joanna. Hoping to offer her friends some assistance on the front lines and reasoning that the best defense might be a good offense, she summons forth a small orb of fire in the palm of her hand.

Teldon grits his teeth and scowls angrily at the creatures, partly due, no doubt, to the pain of the venomous bite but even more so because of the insult of the shriexyzs' apparent utter disinterest in his elaborate ruse.

As Zee completes her spell, she throws a particular Harrow card--The Brass Dwarf toward the two spider-monsters. The card grows larger and larger, and the image within becomes more and more distinct as the card itself fades out to nothing. The image then steps out of the card: A vaguely humanoid-shaped entity of living fire.

The fire elemental then attacks the spider-creature to the north of Joanna.

fire damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 + burn (1d4, DC 11)

Zee then steps forward and to the side and casts another spell. The image from a different card rises from her fanned deck. A storm cloud appears, and a lightning bolt crackles from it, striking both of the spider-creatures. The cloud then fades out of existence.

With a grinding of teeth, Shadlah takes a moment to spit out a few curses regarding such narrow passageways and those who designed them, before allowing another burst of earth and stone to fly from her hands.

Could make Joanna bigger. That would hopefully buy us some breathing room and up the damage Joanna can dish out. Don't know if you have enlarge person prepared though.

Don't worry about it - it's not clear in the descriptive text for the area and I think, from a logical perspective, they should be waist height walls that run alongside the stairs. As far as I am concerned, Ziomarra has LoS from her position. Let's not retcon anything... especially as your GM has half-written his post (and there's a load of d20's floating about with the Shriezyx!!!)

Ah, the infamous Dirt Devil. The bane of celestial and chaotic dust bunnies everywhere.


As Briana brings a flame to her hand, Ziomarra finishes what she started... and wrenches a small fire elemental from the Plane of Fire. The temperature rises at the entrance to the shrine as Ziomarra's summoned elemental slams into the surprised Shriezyx - but, agile and terrified of the flame, Alaznist's servant manages to swerve out of the way...

...but that is not all Ziomarra does. Lightning rages within the room as she summons an electrical storm... sparks fly as the arachnids are silhouetted by two lightning strikes... the smell of ozone combines with the stench of burning chitin...

Joanna grimaces in pain as the arachnid flails wildly at her. She manages to avoid or block some of the blows, but the vile beast proves to be a tough opponent. A bite finds her thigh, just above the knee. The venom begins to course through her veins, trying to weaken her, but thankfully, the paladin is made of sterner stuff than that. Claws rake and scrabble at her shield, and two of them find their marks, opening up her shoulder and arm. None of the wounds themselves are serious, but Joanna can feel the hot blood, her blood, running down her arm and her leg. She could already feel the quiver in her limbs as the pain lanced up them.

She could not falter though.

Seeing Teldon under a similar assault, she knows that they need to focus on one opponent at a time.

"Focus on the bug after Teldon's face! Kill it then worry about the one on me!"

Putting her words into action, she slashes at the monster after Teldon, her blade leaving a vicious wound. As she moves back to defend against the counter that is sure to follow from the bugs, she touches the holy symbol hanging from her neck and for a moment, her eyes glow silver as divine power rushes through her to seal her wounds a little and stem the flow of her lifeblood through them.

Oops, GM error... I went against AC w/o shield (even though I went with F/F AC w shield in the first round)... anyway, rather than retconning to the max, I am going with your suggestion that the Shriezyx - at the top of the stairs - have higher ground and hence, everything hits.

Turning to her left, Joanna sees that the Shriezyx has left itself dangerously exposed in its urgency to attack Teldon. Bringing her weapon down, she near cleaves through the beast's thorax... and then, following up, Arsith smashes at it once more... with scarlet entrails dangling from a brutal crack in its chitin, Joanna's target is surely close to death.

Joanna grits her teeth as tooth and claw rip into her skin. Her legs and shoulders are bloody from the gashes left by the vicious attacks. She can feel the tremble of her muscles, the fear that's she would die here. Teldon would say she should retreat, she should let someone who hadn't been cut to ribbons take her place while she recovered.

That was not the way of Iomedaeans. She would retreat only if her friends would not be endangered. She would stay if even one of them would be put in danger. Doubt clawed at her. Her step-mother's voice rang in her ears. She could feel the madness from Ravenmoor threatening to drown her again.

This time, though, she was not alone. She would never have to face her demons alone again.

Striking at the monster on its last legs, Joanna made ready to take another punishing assault.

Zee steps up to the giant spider-things and, brow wrinkled in concentration, speaks an arcane incantation. She then throws her Harrow deck at the giant spiders. The cards burst into a cone of flames that immolate both of the ancient monsters.

Arsith, seeing that Joanna is flagging, is inspired to greater things… and her mace crashes through the thorax of the beast at the exact same spot where Joanna had failed…

Arsith – Shriezyx 1 is not down at the start of your turn so no opportunity for you to divert an attack to Shriezyx 2.

…and then, once again the shrine is filled with fire. Ziomarra steps up and, slinging a fan of cards into the chamber, creates a super-heated inferno. Screeching at an excruciating pitch, the arachnid that bore the brunt of the flame is incinerated… the scorched, empty husk of the beast collapsing as the flames subside.
