Briana's Round 3

"Oh no you don't!" Briana cries as the remaining thug attempts to flee. She whips up the air and nearby debris in an attempt to entangle him before he can get away.

"After him!" she adds, with a glance at the first ensorcelled thug.

Entangling Curse; DC 16 Reflex save or he becomes entangled for two rounds.

As Joanna rushes to Kandamerus' side, her touch staunching the flow of blood from the wound yet not rousing him to consciousness, Teldon turns and rushes after the fleeing thug... his shortsword missing on his first instinctive slash... but stabbing deep on the second attempt...

...shoots burst through the pavements clutching at the ankles of the running man...

Black Kiss Boy, Reflex Save vs Entangling Curse: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17, saved

...but, fleet of foot, he isn't slowed by the rapidly growing plant-life...

Ziomarra and Arsith delay.

As the thug who smashed Kandamerus to the ground tries to lose himself in the crowd, he is caught twice – first by Teldon’s blade and, seconds later, by a shower of sharp stones ripped from the ground by Shadlah… with blood running from a gash across his brow into his eyes, he stumbles into the densest parts of the bustling crowds…

Briana's Round 4

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Even as two of the Black Kiss Boys flee into the crowd Briana spots them easily. She hesitates for a moment; she'd like nothing more than to turn all four of them over to the guard but with them diving into the crowds pursuit became more dangerous. What if they got desperate and took a hostage?

"Let them go," she finally says. "Hopefully we've put the fear of...of something into them, at least. Especially the one that ate steel and earth just now." She turns to the one still held under her spell. "Would you kindly secure your friend here, so he doesn't run once the magic wears off?" she adds, digging out her rope before hurrying to see to Jasper.

I think that will be two move actions for her; one to pull out her rope and give it to her charmed minion and then another to move over to where Jasper and Joanna are. Briana's not going to pursue, but won't stop anyone else if they want to do so!

Okay, Briana will just enlist a little help for someone to tie up the guy she's got charmed then :)

The two attackers who flee from the scene of the mugging are quickly lost in the crowd and, realising that the friends are more than a match for their crude attacks, they do not return... and any loyalty that their may have been between the gang, it doesn't extend to rescuing the two surly captives that Ziomarra and Briana now hold...

Unselm, limping towards Joanna and the fallen Kandamerus, urges the paladin to make the street preacher comfortable... and then, adjusting his glasses and seeing that Joanna is more than capable of providing succour to the injured, he nods in acknowledgement towards her. Joanna's spell, a wave of soothing warmth that closes the worst of Kandamerus' wounds, rouses the fellow from unconsciousness...

His eyes blink open and he looks from Joanna to Teldon and then to Arsith... reaching for the ache across his brow, confusion threatens to drag the unstable man over the edge, he starts to babble... peculiar half-formed words in an unidentifiable dialect... and his hand reaches for the flail at his side. And then he sees Unselm... and he instantly calms...

"Unselm? My good friend... I dreamt a dream of the world cracking open... and from it, there birthed a being comprised of midnight-black fire... it turned and gazed upon me, spoke my name and ushered me through to the end-times... tell me, have I died? Is Groetus come down to unhang the stars from the sky?"

Unselm smiles, and offers Kandamerus a hand... helping him to his feet, "I am afraid not Jasper, it's just another day in Beacon's Point... I'm afraid your preaching attracted the attention of some ne'er do wells - my friends here", Unselm points out the group, "they drove them off before they could do you serious harm".

Kandamerus looks at the friends, almost with a look of disappointment in his eyes, "Oh... oh, thank you... I suppose"... and then, turning to Unselm again, "You keep strange company Unselm... you should be careful".

Briana frowns at Jasper as he almost seems to lose himself for a moment, only to seemingly be calmed by his friend's presence.

Well, everyone's been saying that Groetus worshipers are half-man so I guess maybe it's to be expected?

"You're still a little injured sir," Briana says as she cautiously approaches the man. "If you'll hold still a moment I can finish what Joanna started," she says as she places a hand on his shoulder and wills the rest of his wounds to close.

Sorry, two busy days, catching up but nothing to add..

Grimacing as Briana provides a much needed wave of healing, Kandamerus focusses on the shaman, "You pull on the natural world amidst the ant-pile of this city... your friend wrenches Torag's own stone from the ground and uses it as a weapon... and the man, his mind is a weapon. I see the mark of the angels upon you all... the blind angels of judgement... and, before two winters have passed, those angels shall walk amongst us".

Tutting, Unselm suggests moving somewhere warmer, "...and maybe some food? You look like you haven't eaten in a while?"

Monetarily lucid, Kandamerus agrees, "That would be nice... thank you...".

run them through and be done with it?

"Oh, yes... I don't suppose there's a watchman nearby we could flag down..."

Inactive

"That's what I had in mind; flag down a watchman and hand them over," Briana agrees. "Even here there were enough witnesses that I don't think we'll be stuck answering question for long."

She glances at Jasper. Shadlah's power was obvious but how did he know the nature of her own powers? Or of Teldon's sharp mind?

Maybe he really does carry the gift of prophecy? Or was it just a lucky guess?

It doesn't take very long to find one of the city guard, although when it comes to witnesses to the events, none are forthcoming... asking around, Briana and Ziomarra are rebuffed even by the folk who were operating market stalls in the area and must have seen the attack. It matters little though, the watchman recognises 'the Black Kiss Boys', "They've been on the run from us for the last couple of weeks... pickpocketing, burglary and a couple of charges of assault... these boys have got a lot to answer for. Thank you for helping out the street preacher... and for getting this scum off of the streets".

...as the petty criminals are led away, talk turns to finding somewhere to eat - and before Ziomarra can suggest anywhere, Unselm proposes that they go to 'The Mad Queen', "It's a quiet tavern just off of the main street here" and then, out of ear shot of Kandamerus, "Busy places tend to agitate poor Jasper... better that we talk somewhere less popular". Unselm's prediction that the tavern would be quiet turns out to be remarkably accurate, with a clumsy portrait of Korvosa's Queen Ileosa painted on the side of the building, the drinking hole turns out to have a clientele of precisely zero...

...which ensures that the friends are quickly served with some passable fare, a hearty broth with what appears to be freshly baked bread accompanied by a couple of jugs of chilled water. Wolfing it down, Kandamerus doesn't speak for the first ten minutes or so... with his bowl finished, and tucking into more than his fair share of the breads, the scraggy-bearded street preacher turns to Unselm, "You are a good friend... thank you".

Unselm smiles and takes a moment to introduce each of the friends to Kandamerus, "They are working for Lady Heidmarch... and it turns out that you may just be able to repay their good deed". A quizzical look comes over Kandamerus, "Oh? How? I am but a mere cog in the collapsing mechanisms of the world... my purpose, piteous as it may be, is to prepare those who can hear our approaching fate for the end times. Lady Heidmarch, as wise as she is, thinks too much of me".

Joanna nibbles on a piece of bread, trying her best not to inhale the food like Kandamerus was, or like she normally would. The Painting of Ileosa on the side of the place was a bit of a shock, but she supposed if any deserved the title of "Mad Queen" it was her. Her attention now is focused on the prophet devouring the food with unseemly haste.

The poor man must not get many good meals, she thinks as her friends take charge of the conversation. Seeing that she really had nothing to add, she keeps silent and waits for Kandamerus to respond.

Unselm, taking small and tentative spoonfuls of the soup, answers Arsith’s query about the apparent danger of the streets, ”Beacon’s Point isn’t a bad place but you have to learn to blend in… make any sign of having something worthwhile… well you’re going to draw some unwanted attention for sure. But I’d say it’s no worse here than it is in certain districts of Kaer Maga or Korvosa. And it’s, for sure, a darn lot better than anywhere in Riddleport. Old Jasper here… he’s just got a habit of riling people up with his prophecies of doom and destruction… folks don’t like to hear that the world isn’t going to survive beyond next Oathday”… Kandamerus, oblivious to Unselm’s observations, continues to slurp at his broth.

When the conversation turns to the Lady’s Light, Kandamerus suddenly becomes more animated… his eyes seem far more focussed as lucidity briefly returns to him, ”The Lady’s Light? You wish to travel the Mushfens… you must be cautious, it’s a wild, wild place – you don’t, if you don’t mind me saying, seem like the kind of folks that have ought to be trekking through such a place… Many months I was out there, searching through the swamps of the Lady’s Cape – not once did I meet a creature that wanted nothing more than to make me their meal. I could help you… There’s a woman out that way, you should seek her out and find out more about the local tribes”.

”…and another bowl of that soup wouldn’t go amiss”

Of course.

Arsith orders and pay for another bowl of soup, asking for bread and meat too for the poor hungry man

As the second bowl of soup, with bread and some passable meat, arrives on the table in front of Kandamerus, he nods at Arsith, "Much indebted to you miss... Now, where was I? Ahhh, it's Maroux you'll need to find out at the Lady's Cape - last time I saw her, she'd built herself a little shack to the east of the Lady's Lagoon. She's made her home on a small islet there... I guess she reckons a bit of water around her home will keep most of the critters away. Anyway, you'll need to tell her Jasper Kandamerus sent you... and, word to the wise, if she asks you for a little help - you should probably agree... otherwise you'll get nothing from her".

Kandamerus pauses between spoonfuls, "What are you wanting out there anyway? I hunted out there for months and never found anything... the swamps have swallowed up most of what may once been there".

Teldon picks absentmindedly at his food but doesn't say much of anything, apparently sulking a bit that his plan to capitalize on the prophet's madness hadn't fully played out.

Huh...Teldon's usually more talkative than this. Maybe he's feeling sick?

Briana fidgets, ever unsure of just how much information she should reveal - it always seemed that Teldon or Zee had a much better idea of such things. But with neither one appearing to feel very conversational, she tries her best to answer the man's question.

"Well...we're looking for something and we think it's hidden somewhere in the Lady's Light," Briana responds. "Some sort of artifact, maybe. We don't really have much to go on but it seems to be our best lead so far."

"Um...if you don't mind me asking, what sort of woman is Maroux? Why does she live out in the wilderness alone?"

Shadlah lowers her own bowl after draining the last of the broth, wiping her mouth on her wrist-wrappings and tearing a chunk of bread in half. As she mops up the last few drops of broth, she adds, "We are looking for something very important, so everything you can tell us will be appreciated."

"Maroux? She practices witchcraft out there in the swamp... I don't know where she comes from originally, she isn't one for long conversation, but it seems that the hermit's life suits her well. She's half orc as well... and got the moods to go with it", Kandamerus thinks a little more, "So you think you might be going into the Lady's Light? Can't say I ever ventured into the structure... what I was looking for would never have been in there..."

Kandamerus seems ready to talk further when, from behind the double doors that lead to the kitchen, there is a terrible clattering of metal... the sound of pots and pans dropping to the floor... when the cacophony of noise is over, the clarity in Kandamerus' eyes is gone. His eyes dart around the table, looking at each of the friends in turn before fixing upon Joanna... his eyes narrow and he hisses at her, “Steel is a thin reed on which to hang thy hopes — remember the strength of stone!”

Completely caught off guard, Joanna let's a quiet "eep" as Kandamerus fixates on her and hisses his warning.

Kandamerus tone switches to an almost conspiratorial tenor, "In time, you will know... before the day that Groetus climbs down from the heavens, you will see... oh yes, you will see..."

Unselm, sitting next to Joanna, whispers into her ear, "Don't fixate too much upon it... poor old Jasper's revelations are mainly flights of fancy and barely remembered script... he is getting worse, as the months go by he becomes closer and closer to madness".

Teldon perks up as Jasper's madness begins to manifest again. "Listen, prophet," he says quietly, "I have seen the means of the end's coming. A power from ancient Thassilon that we must salvage. If you truly wish to see Groetus climb down from heaven with your own eyes, you must come with us and lead us through the Mushfens. Will you accept this sacred charge?"

Briana isn't sure of whether to be impressed by Teldon's quick wit or infuriated at the attempt to take advantage of someone that clearly wasn't always in their right mind.

"I know we really could use an actual guide with us instead of just having some vague directions on to go, but this is dangerous - I hope you realize that," she whispers softly, a hint of steel in her tone. "If he comes with us you need to be prepared to take responsibility for keeping him safe because he clearly can't do it for himself when he's like this!"

Before Joanna can whisper a reply to Unselm, Teldon begins to try using the man's madness to get him to help guide them. The paladin narrows her eyes to glare at him for a moment, not at all amused by his plan.

We aren't even sure that he'll be able to take care of himself, her thoughts unknowingly echoing Briana's words. Still, there wasn't much she could do now, but hope for the best. her gaze softens and she turns her attention to Unselm.

"Forgive me," she whispers, "it's just unsettling to rely on steel to protect my self and my friends and then hear that. Maybe I've been hanging around a certain Harrower for too long." Humor flashes in her gray eyes as she flicks them to the unusually quiet Ziomarra.

Maybe he could draw a map? Or tell us as precisely where to go, while Briana draws the map? I'm sure she has the skills to do it. I don't like the idea of endangering this poor man. Desna can't keep an eye on him permanently.Taking a sane, defenseless person through this trek could be dangerous enough... If we have to watch him constantly, it means we can't watch each other.

Kandamerus, spittle starting to dampen his beard, stares at Teldon, "A guide you are wanting? Through the sucking tentacles and shivering trees of the swamps... through mangrove, bog and ruin... and, if I help you find this thing of ancient Thassilon, the end times will be ushered in?" For the record, Teldon believes the man is having true visions and that his prophecies really are related to the shards... so he's not trying to exploit Jasper's madness as much as manipulate him by his religious beliefs (which is maybe more of a lateral move than an improvement?)- he certainly intends to use the sihedron to stop whatever calamity is coming, not usher it in though so bluff it is...

No worries Teldon! For the record Briana isn't super upset or anything, just a bit disapproving of the manipulation. If this had happened much earlier in the game she'd probably be more upset but well...people usually tend to be more lenient with those they love ;)

"Well...I guess that settles it then," Briana sighs. "We'll do our best to protect you from harm as you guide us along - whether we go by land or by sea."

"Um...Ik stim troch lân! Neidat alles, oefening is goed foar jo rjocht?" comes a voice from underneath the table.

Familiar Speak:

"Um...I vote by land! After all, exercise is good for you right?"

Kandamerus seems momentarily surprised by the voice beneath the table - 'composing' himself as much as us possible given his tenuous grip on reality, he mutters "...and the beasts, the plants, the stone and the sea shall all call out at the arrival of the last moon".

Unselm nods at Joanna's observation, "The Lady's Light is used by seafaring folk as navigation around some particularly dangerous rocks and shoals... you won't find a boat that will take you to shore, that much is certain, but I would think you could get within rowing distance of land. And surely travelling by boat would be safer than braving the Mushfens?"

Earlier...

Zee gives a statement to the Magnimar guardsmen as she hands over the captured Black Kiss Boys. She unshackles the one she'd captured as soon as the guards have them. One of the guards looks at her questioningly when she stows the manacles in her satchel... with a smile she says, "These are mine," and winks.

She remains mostly silent at the rantings of Kandamerus, rolling her eyes a bit and shaking her head dismissively. At one point, she mutters, "E un adorator de Groetus pentru tine..."

Varisian:
"There's a Groetus worshiper for you!"

As the party approaches the Mad Queen, Zee narrows her eyes at the painting of Queen Ileosa, and makes an odd hand gesture.

Knowledge (local) DC 10:
The gesture is a traditional Varisian ward against curses.

She shudders for a moment, remembering those nights at Trail's End outside of Korvosa when Blood Veil ravaged the Varisian encampment... and how her beloved grandmother succumbed to the plague. She still does not trust any "doctor" wearing one of those damnable beak-masks...

Now...

Zee rolls her eyes again as Teldon tries to play off the Grotean's madness. "Aripile lui Desna frumoase..." she mutters.

Varisian:
"By Desna's resplendent wings..."

She finally jumps into the conversation as it turs to the specifics of the journey itself...

Takes 10 on Knowledge (geography) for a 15...

"I've been in a caravan that skirted the Mushfens, and I must agree with Unselm: Slogging through the mire is one journey that I think would be best avoided. I think that approaching by water would be a safer way."

Seeing how agitated Zee is getting, she leans in a little closer to her.

"Zee," she whispers softly, "are you okay? You normally aren't this..." she pauses a moment as she tries to think of the right word, "annoyed, I guess."

What was that, some sort of Varisian 'bugger off' thing? Maybe I'll ask her about it later.

"Er, sorry...Rowenna was saying she'd rather slog through all that mud...and grime...and deal with all the nasties that live in the swamp...instead of taking a quick sea voyage and staying clean and dry..." Briana mutters, glancing underneath the table at her companion.

And you, Shadlah, what do you think? We don't know you much yet, but we'll appreciate to have your opinion. Besides, I guess your powers should work better on land than at sea, no?

A particularly crusty hunk of bread crumbles in Shadlah's fist as she stares at Teldon in disbelief. She finds herself wanting to confront him, wanting to point out his trickery in front of Kandamerus, but as she sees the others resort to more covert warnings, she adds her own, hissed through gritted teeth. "You would lie to a madman to further our ends? To put his life in danger over a coincidence? To take advantage of his state?" She shakes her head, tearing into the bread and grinding it between her teeth, staring dispassionately at the far wall.

Arsith's question breaks her forced focus, and she turns to the priestess suddenly. "Yes," she says evenly. "If nothing else, I feel as though my abilities are more potent on land than water. It makes me feel more comfortable, as well."

Teldon furrows his brow at Shadlah's total misreading of the situation (and at the fact that she would jeopardize their mission by saying such a thing in front of Jasper). Turning to their guide he asks, "Jasper, E korero koe tenei reo?"

Shoanti:
"Do you speak Shoanti?"

Kandamerus looks incredulously at Teldon as he talks in an alien tongue... and then, having become increasingly agitated as the discussions moved away from the purpose of the journey to the Mushfens and on to the method of travel, suddenly stands and with the vaguest tinge of clarity in his thought pronounces, ”The void will take us whether we travel in a vessel across turbulent ocean or hike through insect-infested swamp… there shall be no escape from the end-times… friends, forget about today’s woes and embrace the inevitability of the end”. Turning to Unselm, he states that he plans on being in Beacon’s Point, ”The word of Groetus shall be heard in the highest and lowest places”, for a few more days and if Unselm’s friends still wish to have him travel with them, Kandamerus will be ready… and, with that, the prophet of Groetus strides out of the tavern, his final words ringing around the room, ”Fear is far wiser than folly… but it is folly that will aid thee in the nights to come!!!”
