Teldon might have had an easier time with a barbarian honestly... its easy to plan tactics around 'the oaf will always charge in right away'. Plus a barbarian probably wouldn't get upset about some of his less righteous ideas, or swear to help people/things that have nothing to do with our mission. I like the RP dynamic between them though (and the relationship with Briana has, I think, definitely tempered some of the friction that otherwise might have been likely).
Joanna Whitehall |
I don't know if it would have been that much easier. I would have probably played a member of a clan I came up with which happens to be a bunch of do-gooders with chronic hero syndrome. True the reactions so some of Teldon's more morally gray plans wouldn't have been as severe, but on the flip side, they would have much more violent reactions when their ire's roused.
That and they'd be more likely to tweak his nose just because. There might or might not be more than a little fey blood in them. :)

I'm having work done on my house that generates fumes, and we can't be in the building for the next 48 hours. We're therefore taking a mini-vacation. I may not get a chance to post again until Monday. Please bot me as needed.
Teldon Moore |
My phone (which I do most of my posting from) isn't working, so my posting may be a bit sporadic for a few days. I'll try to get a post up from a computer tomorrow.
Joanna Whitehall |
Cool. :)
I've got something I want to do because it'll set some things up that I want to do when we get back to Magnimar.
Ziomarra Callinovo |
So this is appropos of nothing, but I wanted to share with someone...
I have been cleaning out a bunch of boxes from my attic that I haven't looked at in 20 years. I've made some discoveries of my gaming past that I thought were lost to the ages!
...The first 13 issues of The Sorcerer's Almanac, the newsletter of the Cornell University gaming club/D&D fanzine: Sept 1989 - Sept 1991. I was on the editorial board.
...The Horror of Castle Nostromo (1989): An AD&D horror adventure I co-authoried that included a full description of a castle about the size of Castle Ravenloft. We ran this as a team-advancement tournament adventure for Cornell University's RPG convention "Pentecon II" in 1990.
...One of Our Wyverns Is Missing (1990) An AD&D tournament adventure, I co-authored, where the PCs are evil, high-ranking officers in the army of the Orcish Lands, trying to stop a rogue element from sabotaging peace negotiations with the bordering human kingdom.
...Galena (1991) An AD&D 2e tournament adventure I co-authored. Billed as "D&D as you've never played it!", the game was set in an all-new campaign world, with all-new PC races, classes, spells, and magic system.
I'm really considering trying to scan and OCR the documents so that I can share them with the world once again!
Ziomarra Callinovo |
...so, I went ahead and scanned/OCRed the first six issues of Sorcerers Almanac.
So, feel free to take a look at gaming goodness from 27 years ago, written by a bunch of college kids, including yours truly!
Joanna Whitehall |
Same here. I'll have to take a look and maybe throw some of this at my Skype group.

What fun!!! I shudder to think what I would find if I went digging around for my school / university age 'adventures'!!! I was more into the 'grim and dark' world of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and I have recollections of 'developing' scenarios that were based in that world... I imagine that they were chock full of teenage angst!!!
Very impressed though that you actually got it together to publish an actual magazine - maybe it's time for a glorious rebirth of the Sorcerer's Almanac!!!!
Joanna Whitehall |
If I may be allowed to do a little plugging, I got involved with a Warhammer fantasy wargame with a heavy RP element. It's been pretty fun. The guys that run the site are looking to attract more players.

We're in the middle of a campaign, but turns go by on a weekly basis, so feel free to hop in.
Ziomarra Callinovo |
One of the contributors to the magazine is now a published YA sci-fi/fantasy author!
I haven't seen her in person in decades, and I don't know if she plays TTRPGs anymore, but I still consider her to be one of the BEST role-players I've ever had the pleasure to game with!
And I just uploaded the next seven issues of the magazine.
I was involved with the campus gaming club through Sept 1991 (my senior year). I was seriously injured in a car crash in October of that year, and I ended up having to drop out of the gaming scene first to heal, and then to concentrate on my coursework so that I could graduate on time. (My parents didn't have the money to pay for a ninth semester, and I didn't know that the insurance settlement I would eventually win could have been enough to cover it...)

That is so cool (the fact that one of your 'co-contributors' is now an author - not the car crash dramas!!!) - once I've caught up with my GM posting, I'll take a little time to peer through the mists of time and read more of 'the Almanac'...
...on an unrelated note, and because I'm perusing the Paizocon schedule in another browser window, which events / games are you planning on attending at the event? It looks like a great couple of days!!!

Looks pretty cool but, for now at least, I'll have to pass... having said that, I found my original hardback tome of the Warhammer rules (complete with various photocopies of additional rules from White Dwarf back in the day)... maybe I will be inspired!!!
I have a real fondness for Warhammer RPG! If you ever want to give it a go on these forums, I would join your game, Zed!
...who knows, maybe one day I'll get something together - as always, folks within my long running games will hear about any such developments first!!!!

I have my Paizocon schedule!
I didn't get into everything I wanted (unfortunately no Starfinder games), but I did get into three very desirable lottery events...
Escape From Briarstone Asylum
GM: Adam Daigle. Other playes include Robert Brookes (creator of the Aethera Campaign Setting), and Jacob W. Michaels, both of whom work in the industry.
Aethera: Wanted in the Wastes
GM: Amber E. Scott. (I'm a Kickstarter backer of the Aethera Campaign Setting)
PFS Scenario 8-99: The Solstice Scar, the 2017 PFS Special
And, I am attending the Preview Banquet.
I am also running two events, both of which filled!
Night Witches: Introductory Game
An introduction to the Night Witches role-playing game, where the PCs play airwomen of the all-women 588th Night Bomber Regiment of the Soviet Air Force, 1939-45.
Dungeon World: Murder's Mark
A conversion of the Pathfinder adventure Murder's Mark to the Dungeon World RPG.
I have a couple of holes in my schedule that didn't get filled with lottery events. I'm expecting to use that time to check out the vendors, get food, socialize, or maybe play a short pick-up game.
Briana Kaddren |
^Oh wow, you'll have a lot on your plate then. I hope it all goes as smoothly as possible!
In other news, it's not PaizoCon but I will be going to DieCon in a few weeks with my brother and some other friends! I'm a little nervous because I'm actually rather shy and reserved IRL when I'm around people I don't know but I'm also excited because I've not been to a convention since I was 15 :)
Haladir |
...looks like a load of really good events (great that you are running as well as playing) - also, fun fact, Robert Brookes was in one of my very early PbP's here on the boards :)
...and I shouldn't worry, I expect you'd be hard pressed to avoid Starfinder at this Paizocon!!!
Robert was in one of my early PbPs, too. The GM was Mike Kimmel... who went to on to be an RPGSS finalist the same year that Robert was.
Fun fact: Robert lives about 25 miles away from the city I grew up in.

It's game day, so my post might be coming tomorrow morning. It's been a busy few days, so I need to spend today prepping The Cyphermage Dilemma, which I'm running in 4 1/2 hours >.>
As for Paizocon, I wish I could make it, but it's prohibitively expensive to fly internationally. *sigh* Maybe one year...
Ziomarra Callinovo |
Paizocon is a bust this year.
Flight was eventually canceled after a six-hour delay. There were no flights that could get me there today (Friday), with the possible exception of getting on standby for a 8:30 PM arrival. Best guaranteed seat would arrive at 1PM Saturday...which would have meant missing half the con.
I made the decision to just cancel the trip.
So many flights were canceled that there were no rooms at any hotel with airport shuttle service, so I had to take an Uber across town to a so-so Hampton Inn. Checked in at 2:30 AM. At least I got five hours of sleep.
And there are no flights home today, either. Soonest is a 6PM Saturday flight. I'm looking at a one-way car rental for a 5-hour drive home... assuming that I can get a car.
"Disappointed" doesn't really convey how I feel right now.
Briana Kaddren |
Zee, that's awful. I'm actually really upset for you right now because I think the frustration and disappointment of such a thing would probably lead to tears if it had happened to me. I hope you're at least able to get some your expenses refunded since the flight issues were beyond your control.
@GM Zed - I hope you didn't mind me taking the initiative to bot Teldon through that combat. I try to help bot other players when I can (and with permission) but if it's something that you'd rather handle yourself then let me know and I'll back off. Also I'm not very familiar with the workings of the kineticist or I'd be a little more willing to bot Shadlah if needed (and if it would be okay with her).
Ziomarra Callinovo |
I'm back home. I did rent a car and drive home yesterday.
The SeaTac Doubletree gave me a full refund with no cancellation fee due to the canceled flight.
I invoked the "trip in vain" rule, and American Airlines re-credited all of the frequent flier miles I'd used for the trip. There's a chance they will also refund the hotel stay and rental car fees, too. That's "under review".
Chris Lambertz responded to my request for a refund for my badge and banquet ticket...they'll take care of that after everyone is back at the office on Tuesday.
My wife and daughter had planned their own trip to Washington DC this weekend. I decided to let them have the one-on-one vacation together, so I'm staying at home by myself. I'm trying to get some of my gamer friends together for an RPG one-shot...I'd run one of the games I'd prepped for Paizocon.
Joanna Whitehall |
Glad to hear you made it home safely. Hope you have fun playing the one-shot. :)

Thanks for botting Teldon - it's kinda handy!!! ...and saves him for repeatedly delaying!!!

Sorry for my silence. Some issues in my local lodge came to a head and overwhelmed me. I've been trying to get to all my games in between the stress and fatigue.
Joanna Whitehall |
Let me third the hang in there's! Hope things work out for you sooner rather than later.
Teldon Moore |
Hey, sorry for the extended silence. As I mentioned before I'm moving and starting a new job and returning to full-time work on my masters, which is always stressful but I also have a lot of home improvement projects I need to finish. A lot. On top of all that I talked to the school about a course I had failed to complete and they're letting me redo the work (which saves me 4,000 USD and lets me graduate a semester earlier) but it's a 7 credit hour course (9 credits is considered full time) and I have to finish it before the end of the summer term.
So, I really hate to do this but I'm going to be awol for a while. I'm hoping to come back in 6-8 weeks but I can't say that with any certainty. You guys can bot me if you want, or write me out and if/when I come back maybe (hopefully) we can work Teldon back in. I've really enjoyed this game and will definitely miss it while I'm gone. Thanks.
Shadlah Broken-Earth |
Got the lurgy, post coming in the morning.
Teldon, take care, and hope to see you back once you're able!
Briana Kaddren |
Checking in; hope everyone has had a good weekend! I went with my brother today to my first face-to-face Pathfinder Society game (but not my first PFS game ever). Despite being a little nervous, it actually went really well and everyone seemed to have a great time :)
I think I still prefer PbP for most of my gaming but I'll definitely try to go again in the future, when my schedule allows!
Joanna Whitehall |
Once things have settled into a steady rhythm with a game I'm taking over and the Nordholm reboot, I want to try my hand at a Sci-FI themed GURPS game. I'm taking suggestions over here. so if that sounds like something you're interested in, then pop on in and put your two cents in. If you've never played GURPS, then don't worry. I plan on helping people as much as possible, so not know the system shouldn't be a barrier to entry.
But, like I said, it's not going to happen until things with these two games I'm trying to get off the ground have settled.
Shadlah Broken-Earth |
Site's been dodgy as all get-out lately, and always when I'm available. It's up right now, but it's quarter to three in the morning. I'll keep trying tomorrow, but if you're waiting on me, don't. I haven't been able to get more than a few minutes of working site time a day for over a week now.
