Ah ok. The Father Charlatan encounter was my favorite, it was so much fun. I took the guy into the other room to describe his visions and would go back and forth between him and the party. And it was the cleric, so they had no healing for most of the next fight.

Okay, so let's figure out how to dispense with the loot we recovered.

First of all, we have that ring of feather falling that was in the puzzle-box. I would recommend that Joanna take that-- if we ever have to cross a precipice, the person in the heavy armor is the one least likely to make that Acrobatics check!

Next, we have the two crossbows from Natalya's hired thugs. If anyone wants to keep one, I'd say put it on your character sheet. (I think Joanna has one and Brianna the other?) We should also sell the masterwork whip. Do we have a need for the second-story harness? It could come in handy if we need to climb walls, but there is only one. We should also sell whatever other gems and jewelry, and then split whatever's remaining six ways-- one share to the party fund.

Zed: Would you re-list the remaining things we recovered? IIRC, Natalya's boots were magical. If she's in a coma, it's not like she's going to need them!

We should then figure out what if any items we should buy with party funds, and then let everyone make personal purchases as needed.

I have one of the crossbows on my sheet already... I know Jo does too (cause we talked about it in discussion a while ago)... If Briana has one as well we'll have to buy another.

Regarding party fund purchases- I'm a big proponent of picking up a couple of magic weapon oils or scrolls early on (so we don't get hosed by DR or find ourselves helpless the first time we find something incorporeal). Given where we're headed, it seems like it might be prudent to look for a couple of scrolls of air bubble and/or touch of the sea just in case...

Female Halfling Paladin 8 | AC: | HP: | Fort +17, Ref +16, Will +15| CMB +7, CMD 22 | Init +5 | Perception +

I don't want any of the stuff we pulled-- maybe the boots, depending on what they are, but nothing else will be sized for me anyway. Plus, as for right now, I'm perfectly happy with the shard. (I don't feel too bad about it, because if there are six more of the things then others might be able to claim those.) I'll just take my share of the gold and go get myself a new trident.

So far, I think you have...

  • Masterwork Mithral Short Sword
  • Two Scrolls (both giving of weak abjuration auras)
  • A beaten up wand (giving of a weak conjuration aura)
  • A Tanglefoot Bag
  • A Smokestick
  • A leather pouch containing 55 GP
  • Natalya's boots.
  • A very elaborate climbing harness
  • A well cared for pouch of what is likely to be thieves tools (lock picks, wire cutters, etc)
  • A sack containing 33 GP, 86 SP, 192 CP, a brass comb, assorted buttons (some with gemstones) and a faded printed handbill declaring it's holder to be the 'Rightful owner of the Grand Mastaba of Korvosa'
  • Masterwork Whip
  • Plus the already claimed crossbows

...taking the boots would however leave Natalya with nothing on her feet...

male Human Investigator [empirist] (VMC Magus) 7 | HP: 52/52 | AC: 18/13/16 | F +4, R +8, W +7 (+9 v Illusion) | Init +2 | Perception +17 (+20 v traps)

Well... We can't hardly put her in a bed with boots on, can we?

Seriously though- Ill take those thieves tools... When i rebuilt I picked up disable device but don't have any tools yet... Also, I'd love that shortsword if nobody objects... Right now I don't have any non-reach melee weapon- I'd still use my long spear a lot but a masterwork weapon would be great and Mithril counts as silver for penetrating DR

Briana actually had a crossbow from the beginning, so she doesn't need any of the ones we picked up. Depending on what the scrolls/wand ID as, she might take one of them as well as one of the alchemical items if no one else wants them.

As for the boots, maybe we can leave her with some new (but obviously not magical) ones for when/if she wakes up or at least borrow her current ones until she snaps out of it.

I will be at my fortnightly (approximately) PACG game tonight so probably won’t get a GM post up later (hence suggestion you make self-contained posts about what you do until you head back to the Heidmarch Manor – making people and places up as required!!!)…

Also, is anyone going to chance their hand in RPG Superstar this year? Teldon, I think you got a top 32 item a couple of years back? Care to Share?

it was a lot of fun but also a little overwhelming...

i got into the top 32 on my first try, but it was also the last year that the judges picked the top 32 (which I think worked in my favor). my item was the Sunblossom. round 2 we had a short amount of time and the challenge was to create an organization (which I had never done in a formal way before), and it had to be specifically tied to Golarion. I had never played (or read) anything set in Golarion before at that point, so i got a copy of Inner Sea World Guide and started reading but my organization (The Children of Carnage- a cult of Rovagug) was sort of too obvious/simplistic.

Sunblossom:
Sunblossom
Aura strong abjuration, conjuration, and evocation; CL 12th
Slot —; Price 35,000 gp; Weight

DESCRIPTION
Worshippers of Sarenrae treasure these delicate orange glass rose blossoms. A sunblossom grants any creature carrying it a +2 sacred bonus to saving throws against fire spells or effects and a bonus to any magical healing effects received equal to +1 per die. If the possessor has the flame of the dawnflower trait, it also grants +1 fire damage to attacks made with a scimitar. It grants these bonuses even when stored in a pocket or bag, but not if in an extradimensional space.

A sunblossom grants additional powers while held in hand. Spells with the [light] descriptor, when first cast, deal 1 point of fire damage per spell level to evil creatures within the area they illuminate. Any spell cast with the [fire] descriptor raises the light level throughout its area of effect by one step, to a maximum of bright light, for a number of rounds equal to the spell’s level (targeted spells illuminate the spaces occupied by their targets at the time of casting). Once per day as a free action it can be activated to have such a spell deal half its damage as divine power rather than fire (like the flame strike spell) and leave behind the effect of a daylight spell throughout its area for 1 minute per spell level.

A sunblossom has hardness 1 and 2 hit points. If destroyed, through damage or by the wielder as a standard action, it immediately releases a flame strike centered on itself (12d6; DC 17). It is irrevocably destroyed but consecrates the area as a hallow spell (the cleric version) with daylight fixed to it.

CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, cure light wounds, daylight, flame strike, hallow; Cost 17,500 gp

the next year i tried entering again but the first round was decided by the new comparison voting mechanism... my item (the Mongrelkin Vest) was IMO pretty clever and well balanced but relied too much on things with which many average voters were unfamiliar (including the race point system from ARG, and knowing what Mongrel Men were). i got some very positive feedback from people who understood the item, but not enough votes for round 2.

last year i was too busy to enter. i tried to log on some to help with the voting but i was also getting fairly tired of sorting through wondrous items. i'm excited that they changed round 1 and will probably enter again this year (as long as I can find enough time to put together something decent).

I'm thinking about it, too. My item last year (the mantle of butterflies) made it into the voters' top 100.

The down-side for this year is that they changed the round 1 submissions from wondrous items to weapons/armor/shields. While I applaud the change, the item I'd been working on is no longer a valid entry. The deadline is a week from yesterday, and my weekend is booked solid, so I really don't think I'll be able to get one submitted this year.

We'll see. If I get really inspired, I might try.

So... division of loot! I believe that we agreed to divide by 6: Each of use gets one share, plus one share to a party fund for common supplies.

Let's sell the masterwork whip at 50% book price: 301 gp (share 50 gp each, 1 remaining)
Cash: 125 gp (in party loot) + 400 gp + 55 gp + 33 gp = 613 gp (share: 102 gp each, 1 remaining)
86 sp (Share: 14 sp each, 2 remaining)
192 cp (32 cp each)

We then sell the buttons and comb for fair value. Zed: Would you just tell us what we get for them?

So, before the sale of the buttons and comb, each PC gets:

152 gp, 14 sp, 32 cp.

The party fund is at: 153 gp, 16 sp, 32 cp.

Male Probably human Computer Scientist 1/ Character Synthesizer 20/ Crazy 99

Well, I'll see what I can come up with then.

Pity, and I had someting pretty cool in mind too.

EDIT: After looking at the deadlines, I think I'm going to pass.

Also, from our party fund, I would recommend purchasing the following items:

2 scrolls of cure light wounds (50 gp total)
1 potion of cure light wounds (50 gp)

One each of Brianna, Jo, or Zee should hold the scrolls; either Teldon or Nalathi should hang onto the potion.

That would bring our party fund down to 52 gp.

Ideally, I'd like to get a wand of cure light wounds shortly, but I think that can wait until our second sortie into The Crow.

What to the rest of you think?

I'm okay with all of that. In a pinch I have better than 50/50 to use a 1st level scroll, it might be a good idea to let me know where on your person you store them... Given where we're headed (and how low some of our swim checks might be) it seems like it might be prudent to grab like an air bubble and/or touch of the sea scroll or two but if nobody else is worried about that then so be it.

I'd be very surprised if they didn't have huge UPSes or a backup generator on all their servers, but since they were down for like an entire day (I first noticed it yesterday afternoon) they probably lost power pretty early and didn't get it back for some time.

That's pretty much what happened. Also, servers are thirsty, thirsty machines, especially web servers.

What I wonder is why they have them on site instead of in a datacenter.

Hard to say for sure.

If I were to hazard a guess: Paizo started out as a scrappy little company at a time when it was cheaper to host your own Internet operation than it was to outsource, provided that you had the in-house technical know-how.

I've seen time and again how organizations decide to keep doing things the way they've always been done rather than make a drastic change. I mean, the company I work at ran its own e-mail service for decades, before finally outsourcing to Microsoft just three years ago.

That said, outsourcing isn't necessarily going to improve performance: Our downtime numbers were lower before the cutover, and our response time to fix e-mail problems was signifantly faster.

Another thing they might be concerned about is intellectual property theft, and a desire to keep all of their IP physically on their own equipment. But that would probably be a question for Vic Wertz.

I'm working on Briana's next gameplay post, but I'm curious as to how GM Zed prefers to handle issues of encumbrance?

Suppose I should have been more specific. I meant their web servers. I can understand why they'd have their file servers on site, and I really don't blame them for hanging on to them.

I also understand that outsourcing isn't necessarily going to improve performance, but I work with websites on a remote server and don't have too many issues, so that may be coloring my thinking.

GM Zed's view of encumbrance is that it isn't something fun or exciting to be keeping track of...unless we get to a point mechanically where we need to think about it (severe STR damage for instance), we will deal with it on a common sense basis...

Looking forward to seeing what Nate has put up for RPG Superstar... Still up in the air as to whether I try something this year...

Good advice!!! I normally write my posts, if they are any length, in a separate editor and then cut / paste them...I have had too many posts disappear into the void to be caught by that trick ever again...

Plus...voting starts tonight!!! What fun...until I compare my item against the first few I see and get all downcast...

I've been a little bit disappointed by how many items seem to be wondrous items slightly reworked to meet the new guidelines... I've even seen one that they called a weapon but was clearly still a wondrous item :(

also, I don't want to cut into your voting time but was Sir Canayven able to help me out at all?

The Crow is quite a large dungeon area so you may find that, on occasion, I will summarise a few rooms in one go (like current gameplay post)...it'll help to keep things moving along but I do appreciate that it does take away some 'player agency' - I will try to find a good balance...

Also, anyone voting within RPGSS? There have been a few cool items so far...but nothing that I have felt compelled to throw at you!!!

That actually works for me. I've seen a lot of GMs and players alike suggest that method for PBP gaming in the spirit of keeping things moving, as you said. As far as voting goes, I'm afraid not. I've not really had much time to look at any of the submissions, let alone pick favorites!

Regarding Briana's vision in the gameplay thread...it's a class skill but given her background there is no way she'd know anything about tracking or getting along in the wild without a little outside help ;)

In random news, DeviantArt is the best thing ever for finding cool character portraits! I was looking at stuff the other day and finally found what I think is a good picture for what Briana looks like (sans being dressed up). I was actually looking for a portrait for a different PBP character but I ran across that one and knew I had to link it for her.
