Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

I was thinking Mountain Dew Code Red, myself.

Auric drains the contents of the vial and finds himself invigorated. Fatigued condition removed. Party now has four potions of lesser restoration remaining.

Perhaps another half an hour passes. The sky brightens as the half moon rises into the night sky, casting strange shadows and making the mist that drifts across the graveyard seem to glow. Occasional gusts of wind swirl the fog and it seems to caress the wooden markers upon the graves.

Perception checks all around.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Male Half-elf Paladin 4/Champion Tier 1

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
"Damn fog..."

Male Halfling Bard 2

Perception : 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Unfortunately for William, a thick bank of fog has settled over his hiding spot, hampering his vision...

Either that or I've fallen asleep...

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

Perception check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Auric seems a bit overcome by the eerie scene, to wrapped up in the strange way the fog caresses the graves to note much else. William, crouched among the bushes, gets caught up in wishing he were somewhere with a warm fire, instead of getting leg cramps squatting in a chill fog.

About this time...

Gendo:
You hear a faint sound, like a wordless, melodic tune, drifting in from somewhere nearby. Outside the radius of the light from the lantern over the back door, you think you can make out a form moving in the dark.

Jon:
Peering through the window, you think you see a shadow or silhouette of someone moving along the wall by the well to your right.

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

I remain motionless, waiting, hopefully for the shadowy figure to come more fully into the light.

Jon pulls out a sling bullet, holding it tightly in his hand. In a whisper he says the words that bring out the inner light in the stone, causing it to glow like a candle. He keeps his fist tightly closed around it, muffling the light, but makes ready to throw it toward the shadowy figure to illuminate it.

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Gendo & Jon:
The figure continues at an unhurried walk along the wall outside the graveyard, moving along the wall toward the entrance. It continues humming an odd, lilting melody. Updated Map

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

I'm beginning to get a bad feeling, particularly with the fact that the figure has been persistently humming that odd melody. Having not seen or heard anyone else with the figure and not wanting to have to deal with a plethora of dead walkers, I drop down to the base of the tree, tumbling on the way down to land on the balls of my feet.

Acrobatics check: If possible I'd like to take a 10 for this, which would give me a 16. If not here's the roll 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21.

"You're actions end here. Surrender!!"

If possible, I'd like to combine my drop to the ground with an Intimidate check to attempt to demoralize the figure.

Here's the Intimidate check if it's allowed: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Jon sighs as the young man drops from the tree. The impulsiveness of youth... He throws the bullet toward the figure, hoping to give illumination to the scene.

Touch Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

This done, he turns to Auric. "They need us. It's time for action."

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Gendo & Jon:
Gendo drops gracefully out of the tree and addresses the figure, which stops its humming with a sharp intake of breath. Jon tosses the bullet, which unfortunately grazes the corner of one of the open shutters, causing it to ricochet and fall short, dropping beneath the window sill. Still, the radius of the light is enough to reach the figure and reveal it.

A sudden flaring of light from near the back of the chapel illuminates a single figure standing just outside the north wall of the graveyard. It is a slight figure, perhaps five and a half feet tall and feminine in form. It wears a filthy, torn robe that likely does little to keep out the chill of the night air. Recoiling in surprise from Gendo's challenge, it holds up thin hands with fingers topped by overgrown, pointed nails. The woman's face is difficult to see, as her grey-streaked, black hair is long and wild, concealing much of her face. She gives a high, thin, wail that ends in a frustrated grunt, punctuated by muttering. Then she bolts for the entrance to the cemetary, moving swiftly on bare, dirty feet.

Jon & Auric:
You are close enough to make out the mutterings after her cry of frustration as she dashes past the window. "No, no, no, no, no...filthy flesh, filthy. Want the pretty, pretty bones. Clean and beautiful and strong..."

From this point we'll be going by initiative, so go ahead and roll them and give me your actions.

Male Half-elf Paladin 4/Champion Tier 1

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Auric runs after her from the church, trying to grab the fleeing madwoman.
Grapple: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Keeping two hands free- so I don't have my shield or warhammer in hand.

Init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Jon will leap through the window, well, fall through the window, more like, not trying for grace. Once out, he'll load his sling and get ready to fire.

Male Halfling Bard 2

Initiative : 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

"Ugh, so much for our surprise..."

William jumps to his feet, bow in hand and dash towards the church as quickly as his feet will take him.

Run action to get as close to the woman as I can.

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

Initiative check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

I immediately charge after the figure, hopefully getting close enough to unleash a leaping side kick.

Attack roll (if possible): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
critical confirmation if roll a 20: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Damage if hit: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Damage if score a critical hit: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Round 1:

Initiative Order:

Gendo
"M" (your mystery opponent)
Auric
William
Jon

Gendo covers a lot of ground this round, zig-zagging around grave markers, and closing with the mysterious woman this round.

The ragged crone rushes through the open gate into the cemetery. She whips her hair wildly as she turns her head this way and that, making strange crooning and coaxing noises, as if attempting to call a small child or a pet.

Auric bursts through the back door of the chapel and makes his way into the cemetery.

William leaves the cover of the bushes, moving swiftly across the graveyard to close on his opponent.

Then, as if in answer to her calling, the ground around several of the graves begins to shift, buckling up and then sagging, as if things were burrowing up from beneath.

Jon wriggles his way through the open window, awkward but effective, and then grabs up his sling in preparation for an attack.

Combat Map

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

I continue moving toward the mystery figure and unleash an open-handed strike, seeking to subdue the figure.

Unarmd Strike: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Possible Crit Threat: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Non-lethal Damage if I hit: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Possible non-lethal crit bonus damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Male Halfling Bard 2

I am finding it rather hard to consider my actions for this round, with Gendo's actions listed, would it be possible to find out the mysterious crone's actions before deciding on ours this round?

You can always delay your action. If you want to wait until after she acts, you can do so.

He's saying that in the initiative order you have posted, everyone but Gendo goes after the crone so it would be helpful to know what she's doing before we act because it may effect what we do.

Male Halfling Bard 2

Exactly, I just think it would be easier than posting 5 or 6 contingencies based on how things may go before my turn. As it is I will still probably have 2 or 3 after I am aware of her actions this round...

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

I see what you're saying. No problem. I'm apparently just being more obtuse than usual today.

Beginning of Round 1:

Gendo moves in on her, throwing a palm strike at the woman, who ducks the blow.

With an evil hiss, she swings an arm in a wide arc, striking back at the monk. He easily sidesteps the blow, but her long, jagged nails put tears in the fabric of his cloak. She then backpedals from him. 5 foot step.

Updated Combat Map

Carry on.

Male Half-elf Paladin 4/Champion Tier 1

Auric half-circles the crone to get her between himself and Gendo, drawing his weapon and shield in the process.
I'm going to double move to N10 and get on the opposite side of her. Pulling out my weapons now that it seems like grappling is a bad idea.

Male Halfling Bard 2

William moves to a better vantage point, "Take her alive if you can, but we must stop her at all costs!"

He then draws an arrow from the quiver on his back and in one smooth motion fires it at the crone now engaged with Auric.

Move to O7 and attack.

Shortbow : 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 7 - 4 = 15
Damage : 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Jon moves to I-9, staring at the woman. What is wrong with her? Is she mad? Evil? Inhuman?

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Auric moves around to cut the woman off, weapon and shield at the ready.

William maneuvers and then launches an arrow. It flies true, striking the woman in the hip. She lets out a cry of pain.

Bony talons begin thrusting from the sunken graves nearest the combat, as several skeletons begin tearing themselves from the earth in a burst of unnatural strength. Those close enough can see movement in the mist covering the ground, as other grave begin to sag and buckle, as if some call from the woman was spreading outwards in a wave, washing across the corpses and instilling them with unlife.

Jon moves, carefully studying the woman as he does so.

Jon:
The woman wears nothing but a dirty, ragged robe. Her black hair is long and shot through with gray. It hangs long and loose, framing her face, and has bits of twig and dead leaves caught in it. The woman is tall, about 5'9" and very lean. She is barefoot. Her nails seem to be thick and tough, more like talons. Her only possession seems to be a canvas bag slung over her shoulder and hanging at her hip. What you can see of her face through the mane of hair shows a gaunt face, thin-lipped, with wild eyes. As the skeletons pull free of the earth, she glances at the nearest one. The look holds wonder, adoration, and a sense of longing that puts a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. Other than her claws and her strange fascination, nothing strikes you as inhuman but her ability to go about in the cold as she does without protection.

Map

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

I take a 5 foot step (to space L9) and stepping into two rapid strikes to the woman's chest with the flat of my hand, continuing to seek to render her unconscious.

Flurry attack 1: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Flurry attack 1 if hit: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Flurry attack 2: 1d20 ⇒ 17
Flurry attack 2 if hit: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

I'm not sure what just happened. I editted my post and then I get new numbers for the dice rolls. The first attack should have read a 17 on the attack and the second should have read a 4. Is that normal to get new numbers?

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Hmm. Odd. Usually the rolls stay the same. Even if you change modifiers, the roll itself doesn't change, as far as I know. Still, I didn't see the original rolls, so what's in the post can stand.

Male Halfling Bard 2

Not a major issue but I had thought Auric was moving to N10 rather than N9?

If the crone is still standing on William's turn, he will move somewhere closer to the cemetery gate that still provides him with a clear shot and fire another arrow.

Shortbow : 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 7 - 4 = 18
Damage : 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

-------------------------------

If the crone has been brought down and yet the skeletons are still advancing on us, William will move to M7 and cry out to rally the others. (Move + Inspire Courage)

"That's one threat down but the real danger is still ahead. Stand fast my friends, we will drive them back!

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Thanks for the correction. I've adjusted the map accordingly. Also adjusting Gendo's move to take tactical advantage.

Initiative Order:
Gendo
"M" (your mystery opponent)
Auric
William
Skeletons
Jon

Gendo swiftly moves in and strikes the woman in the solar plexus twice in rapid succession. She staggers back from the hits, gasping for air.

The woman manages to croak out a few words while working her fingers in an intricate gesture, continuing to move and weave so Gendo and Auric are unable to strike her and disrupt the spell. Upon completion her right hand flares in a cold blue light and she lashes out at Gendo with it, stabbing her talons directly for his eyes. Gendo's training kicks in and he is able to turn aside a split second before she blinds him, the clawed fingers raking the side of his head instead. (Nat 20. Failed confirmation roll.) As her nails dig into his flesh, the blue light burns with a deathly chill. Total of 6hp damage, and a Fort Save is needed.

I'll save the rest of the round until I have Auric and Jon's actions.

Male Half-elf Paladin 4/Champion Tier 1

Auric swings his warhammer with a prayer to Baal.
Smite Evil: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 81d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

"AUGHHHH!!!" I scream as the pain and cold wash through me.

Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Oh please, oh please random work in my favor!

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

End Round 2:

Gendo: You feel the cold begin to seep into your muscles, but through force of will bought with long hours of training, you fight off the lethargy, allowing your mind mastery over your physical condition.

Auric, invoking the fury of the Forge Father, swings for the woman's head, but she whirls away.

Taking advantage of a momentary opening, William lets fly with an arrow, catching her in the side. With a weak wail, the woman crumples to the ground. However, her skeletal friends continue to advance on the party.

The first wave of skeletons converge on Gendo and Auric, flailing at them with bony hands. Gendo blocks a strike from one skeleton. Auric brings up his shield against one attack, talons raking across its surface. The other skeleton gets through his guard, clawing at his weapon arm. 3 hp damage.

As they attack, three others manage to pull themselves free of their graves this round.

Jon loads his sling and fires it at one of the skeletons just emerging from the ground. Attack Roll: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21 Critical Confirmation Roll: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 The shot shatters the skeleton's skull, and the rest of the bones collapse in a heap.

Map

Male Halfling Bard 2

William raises a fist as the mysterious crone falls to his arrow, and he calls out to bolster the others.

"Stand fast my friends! We're not out of the woods yet, but we will drive these nightmares back!"

5ft step to M7 and Inspire Courage (+1 to attack, damage and will saves vs fear).

Male Half-elf Paladin 4/Champion Tier 1

Auric grunts with pain at the skeleton's assault and swings his warhammer in retaliation.

Warhammer: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 111d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

I execute a jump spinning back kick to the Skeleton closest to me Square K11.

Jump Spinning Back Kick: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Damage if I hit: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

"Auric! Step back, make them come to us!" I call loudly, as I take step back myself a 5ft step into square L9.

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Initiative Order:
Gendo
Auric
William
Skeletons
Jon

Round 3:

Gendo's kick breaks ribs and knocks the skeleton back a step, allowing the monk to backpedal toward the cemetery wall.

Auric swings his hammer, but fails to connect with his target. He too steps back, putting himself shoulder-to-shoulder with Gendo.

William falls back, exhorting his party to battle with rousing words. Five foot step puts him in L7

The skeletons press in, stepping over the fallen form of the one that raised them, intent on clawing the life out of living. Gendo and Auric find themselves facing a flurry of dirt-encrusted talons, as all but one of the skeletons is able to close and attack. Gendo parries one claw, only to have another tear into his chest, and he topples. 6hp damage[ooc] Auric desperately tries to fend off the attacks, but there are too many, coming too fast, and he is struck twice more. [ooc]6hp damage

Jon, seeing his allies hard-pressed, casts a spell, and the browned grass of the graveyard begins to twist and writhe, grasping at the skeletons, entangling four of them. He shouts instructions to the rest of the group.

"Auric, grab Gendo and fall back to the chapel! William, there are some berries in my pouch. Feed one to Gendo when you can. Of the three remaining, one more to Gendo, the others to Auric."

Updated Map (I've marked the upper edge of the entangle radius.)

Male Halfling Bard 2

Wow, that round did not go so well...

"I can hold them at the gate, we just need to get through it!" Continue Inspire Courage

William reaches into Jon's pouch and grabs the berries in his free hand. Move action I think?

He then steps forward to interpose himself between the remaining free skeleton and his companions, preparing to fend off it's attacks. 5ft step to K8 and use total defense

Back. Sorry, moving and internet lacking...

Jon hands the berries to William. "Don't spoil your appetite!"

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Good to have you back. Oh, and I remarked the map to indicate the entangled skeletons.

Male Human (Tian stock) Monk 3

I'm not unconscious! I am merely suffering from a mild case of narcolepsy triggered by the trauma of seeing skeletons pull themselves from the ground and being tickedoff at us for waking them up! :p

All kidding aside, no, that round did not go so well. That last attack that dropped me, put me to -3HP

Male Half-elf Paladin 4/Champion Tier 1

Auric grabs Gendo by the collar and limps back toward the chapel, cursing a blue streak.
Withdraw action to J4 or as close as I can get to the chapel.

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Round 3:

Auric drags the fallen Gendo away from the pack of undead. (Stabilization Check for Gendo: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 Gendo stabilizes this round.

William steps forward to cover Auric's retreat, prepared to fend off the skeletons for as long as possible.

The skeletons surge forward, tearing their way from the binding grass and closing on William and Jon. William avoids the attacks of the three that converge on him, dodging this way and that as they attempt to tear into him. Jon suffers a hit as one of the skeletons tears a gash into his upper arm. 3hp damage.

Jon steps back, twirling his sling and letting fly with another bullet at the one skeleton not in melee at this point. The bullet impacts and shatters vertebrae in the neck, and the skeleton topples.

Combat map for Round 4

Male Halfling Bard 2

William leaps backward, away from the skeletons, hoping to dodge their wicked claws. Move to I5 provided it is no longer occupied.
Acrobatics : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Having fallen back, William makes several precise gestures and speaks a few incantations. The ground around several of the skeleton's feet and between Jon and the others seems to shine slightly in the moonlight and the two skeleton's in the area seem to have a hard time keeping their feet. If William is unable to cast with the berries in his hand or to pass them off to his bow hand/Auric, he will drop his bow in order to cast the spell.

Caste Grease on K-L, 7-8, DC 14 Ref saves from both skeleton's in the area.

"I think I've slowed them down, we can hold them at the gate! I'll be able to trip them up again, buy us more time."
I'll keep inspire courage up, try to rally some moral.

Male Half-elf Paladin 4/Champion Tier 1

Auric pulls Gendo behind the fence and away from the skeletons, eating the (two?) berries in the process.
Moving to H4 and putting Gendo behind me, eating the berries to regain 2 hp.

Jon pulls back to J-5 and fires off another sling shot at the nearest skeleton!

Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Male Human(ish) Level 7 RPG Monkey

Round 4:

Auric grabs the berries from William, and then drags Gendo through the cemetery gates. He stuffs the magical berries in his mouth, feeling the throbbing pain of his wounds lessen somewhat.

William falls back amidst a flurry of flailing talons, taking two nasty rakes to the head and neck. 7hp damage. William casts his spell and the two skeletons immediately within the effect loose their footing and fall, clattering to the ground, managing to be both comic and macabre simultaneously.

The other skeletons surge forward towards Jon, the nearest opponent. One hits the grease and likewise sprawls to the ground. The other manages to get through and takes an attack on the druid, a wild swipe that Jon is able to easily avoid.

Jon moves back to the other side of the wall, sending another bullet hurtling toward the only skeleton still on its feet. (Adjusted attack and damage by 1 to reflect William's performance.) The bullet shears through its skull and fells the thing.

Combat Map
Prone skeletons marked as S*.

Male Halfling Bard 2

Two questions good sir :

I believe you may have missed William's acrobatics check to avoid the attacks of opportunity from the skeletons? I may be missing some other consideration but I would have assumed my 22 beats their CMD?

On the other hand, the two skeletons I tripped initially should still have been able to attempt to stand up (twice?) on their turn? Was this simply rolled into the description of their falls?

I could easily be mistaken in some fashion on both accounts, just satisfying my own curiosity more than anything.
