Shadow of the Runelords

Game Master Yucale

Alternate Golarion, where the gods never gave mortals the gift of magic in abundance. When Xin's successors begin to rise from ages of slumber, a band of heroes must defend the Inner Sea from forces it can't even imagine.

I've chosen Not Point Buy for a reason. If you don't think you can roleplay a character with a few very low scores, you may use 15 pt buy. Not encouraging, just allowing. Considering the setting, even underpowered characters will seem plenty super soon enough.

...

I understand, but in 3.5 (not sure about PF as it never came up before) you could reroll if your scores were too low (if bonuses added together were lower then an average person I think).

So I am simply wondering how low would allow a reroll as my scores for the first two tries are less then even an average person by PF standards (which an average person in PF has 3 PB, my first was negative 9 and second was only 2). I don't mind even a lack of any bonuses, just need to know what to go with.

Sharan's player here. While you were away, I've started a PFS version of Sharan in another PBP here. Thank you for the inspiration. If you'd allow it, I'll try to roll up another toon for your setting and game.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 3) = 19 = 16
4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 3, 4) = 10 = 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 6) = 11 = 10
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 2) = 17 = 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 6) = 22 = 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 2) = 16 = 14

Wow. Far cry from Sharan.

Sovereign Court

I am interested. I am all for low magic. That is the way we play in my face to face group.
I will be proposing a simple human ranger. Not a very complicated guy. Mostly a straight talker who grew up in the mountains and is in town to buy supplies. He did live in town as a child but being quite useless at school, was sent to live with his uncle "to make something of him".

Rolling:
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 5) = 16dropping lowest = 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 3) = 17dropping lowest = 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4, 5) = 17dropping lowest = 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 4) = 21dropping lowest = 17
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 5) = 14dropping lowest = 13
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 3) = 18dropping lowest = 15

Wow!

Hmmm, if you're still recruiting, I'd like to throw in with you all.

DarkLightHitomi, you'd need to get either two scores below six or three below eight to guarantee a re-roll. Or you may take the point-buy option.

Looking forward to everyone's character ideas.

Thorgal was born in a small city in Cheliax. His parents died in a house fire, and little Thorgal was taken in by the local temple of Pharasma.
A short while ago, he was ordained as an inquisitor, to seek out and destroy evil, but also to spread the influence of Pharasma's church.
He is a tall, but slender man with a friendly face. Always thirsty for knowledge, Thorgal can often be found in a library, at a bard's recital, or a good deity’s temple. Because he is still a little insecure in his new role as an inquisitor, and because he acknowledges that his knowledge is still limited, he likes to work with other people. Thorgal does not have an overly agressive nature, preferring to solve a situation with diplomacy, if not dealing with evil folk.

Nimt, that sounds fine, but as a spellcaster it'd be nice to see something in your character's write-up dealing with Thorgal's likely very unforeseen ability to work miracles.

BACKGROUND

History:

Azula was hatched under the city but her family got ousted. Azula escaped to a library where she became friends with a blind woman who lived above the library, eventually she was discovered by the woman's daugther who was the librarian. Azula, at the insistance of the blind woman, was allowed to stay if she helped around. Azula eventually found some forgotten tomes while cleaning out one of the back rooms. While Azula had done a few minor things with magic, the tomes taught her to refine her gift and taught her a few spells as well.

Proffessor Lorrimer was an occasional guest at the library and had many conversions with Azula as she asked many questions and always soaked up whatever knowledge he gave her.

This looks pretty interesting, enough that I'll choke down my dislike of rolled stats and see what I get here...

4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 6) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 6) = 18 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 5) = 19 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 1, 3) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 5, 2) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 2) = 14 12

That's servicable. I'm gonna look over the previous submissions and then think on something. Are you willing to allow 3rd party material? I've recently grown very fond of some stuff Super Genius Games has put out.

Sounds fun. Let's see what I've got.

4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 5, 5, 5) - 2 = 15
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (3, 3, 3, 1) - 1 = 9
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 5, 5, 4) - 3 = 14
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 2) - 1 = 9
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 4) - 2 = 11
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 4) - 1 = 12

Well I have been looking at this thread for a while going back and forth as to weather I should try. and since I didn't make it in the Jade Regent game might as well roll some stats to see when happens.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 4) = 15 = 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 1) = 11 = 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 3) = 19 = 16
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 4, 4) = 12 = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1, 1) = 13 = 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 6) = 15 = 13

right down the middle

I think I can make it work

Background:

Thorgal was born in a small city in Cheliax. His parents died in a house fire, and little Thorgal was taken in by the local temple of Pharasma.

After the death of his parents, both devout Pharasmites, Thorgal's life...changed. He was able to heal slight burns or cuts with a touch, or fill a cup with water only by thinking about it. He avoids using his power in front of strangers, afraid of what they will think about him.

A short while ago, he was ordained as an inquisitor, to seek out and destroy evil, but also to spread the influence of Pharasma's church.
He is a tall, but slender man with a friendly face. Always thirsty for knowledge, Thorgal can often be found in a library, at a bard's recital, or a good deity’s temple. appearance:
Thorgal is a stern-looking young man with blond hair and grey eyes. He wears lxurious clothing, having experienced that it is easier to convince poeple if they assume that he has a high status in society.

Thank you Yucale, Can not wait to get started with Irizati.

DarkLightHitomi, I already said we're not using traits.

Lantern Lodge

Ach! I forgot to delete that from my template! My apologies. Working to many recruitments at once, I guess.

Here's the build, just need to insert background/personality/appearance.
I should have that all up later today.

Alright so finally got the background done. Took a little longer than I had hoped. I know that I may need to change some things (being that I am elven where you said the most changes would be), but I figured it would be easier for me to start and then have you tell me where the changes are needed. Just let me know and I will happily fix it.

BTW: I just realized I never mentioned, this is Runner188.

Hmmm. . . . Bump?

I would like some more full submissions before announcing the party.

Okay, cool. Anything I need to fix fluffwise on Taniriel?

4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 1, 4) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 2) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 4) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 3) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 2) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 5) = 15 13

Not bad at all.

I'll be playing a Ratfolk. They get a +2 DEX, +2 INT, -2 STR. That means I should drop either the DEX or INT, yes?

4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 6) = 18 = 17
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 5) = 15 = 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 6, 1) = 11 = 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 3) = 18 = 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 2) = 14 = 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 4, 4) = 14 = 12

This is rashly5. My character is all set up and I decided to drop the DEX bonus.

Tell me if there's anything that needs changing, and if we should roll for HP or Gold or what.

Thanks.

Bubo approved.

So far as I can tell, the only thing is that I don't use alignment in my games. You may keep it if you want, it just won't affect anything. We roll for gold, hp is max at first level but only at first level.

3/5 of a party acquired.

(Rokku, third-party content is allowed.)

Runner188, elves reach full 'maturity' around thirty and if Taniriel's parents were killed for practicing witchcraft he likely lived in a very superstitious area. As well, most of what his parents taught him for casting magic was probably warped by time. As a child he probably wouldn't have understood human 'normal', though he may have agreed with local humans that he was family was a bit crazy.
Aside from that, looks fine.

so what roles have been filled, I would hate to come up with something that has been done already? Also I understand NO MAGIC, does that include divine casters as well. I was thinking druid, but just wanted to check before I make it. Sorry for the slow reply, real life has been craaazzzyyy lol.

Thanks for the answers in advance :)

What spaces do you need filled sir.
Array 13, 12, 14, 17, 9, 15.

Taniriel's been fixed. I didn't do much with some of the background because a lot of that was intended the way you said above, just wasn't clear enough. (Such as warped casting. That's why he couldn't unlock it until he studied the sword. It changed the way he moved and spoke enough to make it work.)

Don't worry about roles; play the character you want to play. (Though we do have a gunslinger, magus, and alchemist if that gives you an idea of party composition)

And when did I say no magic? The setting is low magic; I've already stated (repeatedly) that PCs are free to choose whichever class they so please. Please please please read previous posts. It'll help your chances immeasurably.

Thanks, Runner188 (you have some competition, future submitters...)

Magic exists its just not common and not widely believed in, Just have to understand how that effects your character background. If you are a cleric who can heal people with a touch then thats going to be a big deal with your character's background. Did he hide it? Does everyone know? How did that effect him growing? Did the church keep it a secret? Was he considered his village's holy man and kept secret from others?

I don't know, lots of ways to go with it. Just keep in mind magic is rare from what she's posted and kind of a big deal!

(Just rambling, ignore me)

Awesome! Thanks much! And ditto on what TheRonin said. My character, for example, doesn't believe in magic. Only that there are some unexplained phenomena in alchemy that no one seems to bother to figure out. He knows it works but he doesn't know why (the why being 'magic' because alchemy seems to be a mix of science and magic). At least, that's my assumption on the world.

I'm somewhat curious about the level of technology they have in the world, since it affects my character a great deal. In terms of science and microbiology, I'm assuming they have crude microscopes and that they've discovered about bacteria and such and know they have a correlation to disease, but the information isn't common and, even among practitioners, is deemed unimportant. So bad hygiene and usually overlooked.

Seems 'bout correct.

(Though people will rationalize alchemical phenomena only until, say, a fourth-level alcehmist's abilities. Possibly earlier, depending)

Just checking in to say that I'm still interested in this happening. I sure hope it's still on.

I am a newbie to PbP and want to try it out a couple of times. Most days I should be able to post 3-4 times a day but Thursday-Sunday I might only be able to post 1 or 2. I am working on an Elven Cleric of Cayden Cailean if that is ok with you.

Makes sense. Thanks!

Are regional languages in effect by the way? That is to say, Chelaxian, Varisian, and so on? Just tweaking my character and doing the final touches.

Rolling for gold!

3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6) = 11 x 10gp = 110gp

Yes; regional languages are strongly recommended. I will be using them.

doing some rolls

4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 4) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 6) = 19 16
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 5, 5) = 17 15

4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 6) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6, 1) = 14 13

Nice definitely going Bard!

EDIT: I think the idea is a Bard that knows all the legends, about magic etc. Perhaps focusing on spells that are not so obvious. Buffs, and charms. He might not even realize that he is performing real magic. What do you think? Am I too far out there?

4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 4) = 16=13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 6) = 14=12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 2) = 15=13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 2, 1) = 7=6
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 1) = 9=8
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 4) = 13=12

Wow, I managed to roll a 2 point buy. That really wasn't what I was hoping for...

Lantern Lodge

That's okay, I rolled a -9 point buy then a 2 point buy. Eventually heard back from GM and had to take first set.

hmmm looks interesting, if this is still open that is.

Rolls:

1. 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 3) = 14. For 13
2. 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 5) = 17. For 16
3. 4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2, 1) = 13. For 12
4. 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 3) = 14. For 12 again
5. 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 4, 2) = 12. For 10
6. 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 2) = 9. For 8

bare-bones back-story:
Comes from a farming family with a mercenary background. Grandfather fought for Cheliax back in the day and was paid in land. (There may be a family link to hellknights. Grandfather could even have been bought off/put to pasture for knowing too much?)
Grew up fascinated by the family history and the trappings of war. Trained in the local militia and was considered as a possible Arminger by the hellknights. Came to the attention of Sir Nicolo Cosma. Pushed out by politics. Worked a couple of courier/messenger jobs for Sir Cosma between stints as city watch and suchlike.

motives:
Desires to make his mark on the world. Has read too many romances with knights and dragons to be really healthy. Quietly dislikes what he has seen of the Cheliaxian government. Feels they are not living up to the standards of a just government. He is however not currently considering rebellion. [/ooc]

[spoiler=Vague idea for a build]
Human tactician fighter. Able to hold front line but more flexible that the standard specialist grunt. May well take a level in rogue at some point or at least use a feat to get traits to get more class skills. More later.

Background:I wasn’t born under a full moon, nor did a star sparkle when I came out kicking and screaming. Being born from a whore was not really the best start. I learned many things growing up that would make the strongest men blush. Humility was not becoming of a person with my lineage. I was a whore’s daughter and that is all people would think of me as. I wasn’t shamed by this, I embraced my heritage. I figured if they were all ready going to look at me I might as well make sure I can use it to my advantage. I joined the rogue’s guild very young. They made me to use my beauty so others could make us gold. A little strutting over here with a sly wink would damn sure buy me food for a week if the right partner was working the crowd.
The only issue I have ever faced was that certain men could not keep their hands off of me. I may be a whore’s daughter but I am not a whore. This is how I came to know Sir Nicolo. He saved me from a brute one time. The man would not leave me alone, when I refused him he struck me across the face. As I stumbled near the bar I reached over the counter and pulled out my enforcer, an Earthbreaker named Betty. I swung Betty as hard as I could and broke that brute’s neck. Sir Nicolo saw the encounter and took it upon himself to make sure I was not harassed for my self-defense.
A week later he sent for me, he offered me a life, no more strutting unless I wanted to. Sir Nicolo always laughed because he said even when I didn’t want to attention always seemed to be drawn to me. He called me Diva; I figured it fit, so why not go with it. I accepted his offer and for 6 months I have trained until this fateful day I hear of his demise.
He was my sponsor and my only true friend. Not only do I want to know who killed him, but what is going to happen to me?

Backstory:
. Darius Glokensmith

His family have been smiths, tinkers, alchemist, arcanist, and inventors for ages. Darius learned all of these things at the side of his father and grandfather as he grew up showing a special talent for alchemy. However he showed no arcane talent what so ever. With his father unhappy with him and his mother. Fighting at home over the fact that he might not be his fathers son drove him to the temple there he found solace in prayer. However that peace was not to last one day he returned home from his prayers to find his father had beaten his mother. He flew into a rage seizing his fathers latest clockwork creation and beat his father with it. He didn't stop hitting him when he stopped moving in fact he didn't stop until the clockwork long since broken shattered in his hand. As the guards took him away his mother pleaded for mercy for her son. "Bribing" the Magistrate to give him a chance at life he now works for Magistrate that spared him with the understanding that should he fail his mother will be cast out on the street to suffer. Unknown to him this Magistrate is really his father and had been seeing his mother for quite sometime, he intends to test his son to see if that Devilish Dar'kest blood really runs in his veins. Thus he was sent to Nicolo for training in some of the more subtle arts. Darius has now revived a a letter sent by The Magistrate informing him of his teachers death he would prefer not to go as leaving has ruined his cover for a job. But has little choice given who is hosting the funeral.

This is Varin will come up with more crunch later if picked. Going cleric with the artifice domain and not sure on the other....

Liberty's Edge

4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4, 1) = 11x 10

I just took average gold, but if you would like rolled:

4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 5, 5) = 21 x 10 gp = 210 gp

No offense, but I really don't think a lot of you get the whole starting out in a low-magic world concept.

Daemyn and Poor Wandering One, I'm interested. Would like more info.

Poor Wandering One here with more details.

Re: low-magic: No problems with low/no magic. This might give do something about the famed martial/caster disparity.

More on personality/background: I am basically lifting Malcom from a couple of my favorite books. The family background is d'Artagnan's from the Three Musketeers and aspects of Malcom's personality come from the Don's in Don Quixote. Hmmmm writing this out gave me a different picture of the background.

Revised background:
The d'Varre family has a long and noble history in Cheliax. They have provided generals and fine officers to the army since time out of mind. Recent generations however have been less successful and the family has faded into the kind of genteel rural, impoverished, nobility that is so lampooned in the theaters of post-Thrune Cheliax.

This was the world Malcolm was born into, the world of the manor farm, the village and the countryside. Malcolm is the second son, third if you count the brother who died as an infant. His elder brother Rykert is being groomed to become Lord of the manor leaving Malcolm to pursue what career he can find. Growing up as he did amongst the histories and relics of a noble past a military path seemed the most likely. So young Malcolm spent his time training with the sword and reading what histories and manuals of tactics had survived in the family library.

Finally there came a time for him to leave. His father had helped a man when he was younger. A simple soldier who later became Sir Nicolo Cosma. Though they had long ago lost contact the d'Varre name was remembered fondly enough for Sir Nicolo to arrange a post in Kintargo as an arminger in a command loosely connected to his Order. Malcolm served for a year but was ultimately unsuited to the harshly ordered life of a Hellknight in training and is currently on an 'extended leave' to as his commander put it 'decide if he is an asset in the service of Cheliax, or a problem for it to overcome.'

Build details:
The idea is for a flexible, skilled fighter. He will not win any DPR contests but he will function well out of combat and be quite a threat in a fight. In a low magic setting where commissioned magic weapons and armor may be rare Malcolm will avoid focusing on any weapon too heavily. Will likerly change between weapon and shield and switch hitter based on resources and circumstance. Likely 1st level feats: Human (fast learner) Level one (iron Will)

Did that help at all or do you sktill have more questions?

stats, raw rolls:
13(int). 16(str). 12(dex). 12(con). 10(cha). 8(Wis). Hmm 15 pt build exactly.
