Atol, having rushed in to see what was the matter, spies the man drop and the badger get smacked hard by the Doctor. He shrugs and says simply, ”Gentlemen, you’ve got this.”

He peers to the North to make sure no one sneaks up on them while they’re busy with the badger.

Toffitt stays his hand. "Mercy is misplaced on this one, Glimm. It is not a natural thing." He makes his way through the Cagewright's things, laying them out for Dyrant to examine.

Dyrant examines...but not before exacting his own deft cudgel to the man's head.

"I'm glad we not argue over the lives that we take this day. Retribution will be ours."

Dyrant quickly sorts through the man's stuff, handing away what might be useful, pocketing what is not.

Finneas shrugs.

"Leave the badger then, but we need to hurry."

What did he mean though. Are there others?

Atol looks with satisfaction on the carnage, and wonders a little at his blood lust. Are we becoming what we oppose? Is Glimmil not more right?

He keeps his thoughts to himself, but he scowls a bit as the party moves on. These people have killed many by their deeds. And would have killed more. Perhaps they are not due our pity.

He rushes to keep up.


With a minute to look over his things, Dyrant deduces the man to be Alurad Sorizan. His possessions include:

The unconscious badger wears no magical collar, rings, or other such items.

As the party waits for Dyrant to work out the items, at least one person would notice that one of the pillars has a mural of a masked pureblood yuan-it priest holding a viper and an eyeball. The eyeball appears as if it could be depressed.

Dyrant hands the potions to Finneas.

"These both might help. I see no reason not to down them when we move again," Dyrant utters as the packs the gear away (either on Atol or an appropriate dimensional space).

Dyrant looks at the push button, and then looks around.

"If you give me a moment, I might be able to espy our route better," Dyrant suggests from Finneas' suggestion. "Let's hear what the angels would whisper in my ear."

Dyrant will cast Prying Eyes, 1d4 ⇒ 4 + 16 of them, sending them in groups of 3 groups of 3 (keeping the rest with him for later) to explore his level and return if they are attacked or see threats medium or bigger sized. He will send them each a different unexplored direction.

Finneas steps back as the button is pushed, certain that one smoking eye is enough.

Glimmil nods at the magical finds as Dyrant identifies them, seeming to approve of their capabilities.

As Toffitt flies up, pressing the button, Glimmil picks up his lance and stands ready should more do-badders need "resolving".


Toffitt presses the button and the pillar drops quickly into the floor. It continues sinking and reveals a hole to a chamber 25' below. From the edge of the hole, four statues can be seen, one on each side of the room. The statues are of half-blood yuan-ti with bodies of men and serpentine heads. Also part of each statue is a stone chest.

Atol looks down the hole and considers his options. He starts fishing for rope, when Doctor Toffitt cuts him off.

Glimmil jerks a thumb at the stone chests.

"Trapped?"

As he waits for the others to investigate, he searches his addled brain for heroic stories where the heroes needed to open up urns or chests on their way to meet the big, bad do-badder.

"I remember this story with Garl where he had to solve puzzles on his way to outsmart and beat up this big bad leech... somewhere hidden in that leech's lair was a fly-factory or something. Anyway, Garl needed it to super-power his jokes and beat the leech. We should be sure we're not overlooking picking up hidden fly-factories or things, right?"


Not sure who is floating down. Assuming someone does, nothing happens.


Some of Dyrant's angels return.

Directly north a six-foot-tall black marble statue that stands at the end of a fifteen-foot-wide hall, facing west. It depicts a humanoid creature with subtle snakelike features clad in a black robe and wearing a coronet. In one outstretched hand it grasps a viper, and its other outstretched hand has an unblinking eye set into its palm, staring blindly down the passageway. Behind the statue is a five-foot-deep empty alcove.


To the northwest is a large chamber with slimy black walls with bits of painted plaster clinging to them. Around the base of the walls lie the broken fragments of murals. Four pieces of furniture rest in the middle of the room: a wooden cot, a monstrous wooden chest with claylike feet, a table covered with clay jars and lit candles, and a wooden chair draped with skin.


To the northeast is another room filled with pillars. To the north of this is a room with two-foot-high niches in the east and west walls. A one-foot-tall gold statuette of a yuan-ti abomination stands in each niche. An eight-foot-diameter, semicircular stone basin emerges from the wall opposite the doorway, its sides carved with serpentine engravings. Water pours out of a stone snake's head carved above the basin, filing it.


To the east of the pillared room is a fifteen-foot-wide hall. The plaster wall murals have broken away in places, revealing slimy black stone beyond. Most of the murals show yuan-ti engaging in morbid rituals or hunting humans in the forest. One particular graphic mural along the western wall depicts a twenty-five-foot-long serpent with maroon scales, a pair of arms, and the vague shape of a human torso. In place of a head, six long serpents project from the top of its torso. Yuan-ti priests wearing black robes and golden masks genuflect before the horrid abomination. Wrapped in the creature's coils are several human sacrifices.


To the south of the pillared room is an empty room except for the serpentine wall murals, pieces of netting in the coroners, and iron hooks jutting from the ceiling.

Toffitt does descend, Atol in tow. He looks about the chamber below, seeking secrets.

Dyrant listens to the final prying, angel eye as it snuff from existence. "Did you hear all that Finneas? I have described what they have seen."

Still floating above, Dyrant casts Detect Magic and does a slow and thorough scan of the stony area, waiting to see what Dr. Toffitt and Glim decide on the matter.

It's hard to tell much floating above the room 25' below, but Dyrant does get strong conjuration magic from the southern chest. Dyrant finds no magic on the main level within sight.

Glimmil waits atop the hole, nodding as Toffitt relays the method to return the pillar to the top and potentially transport him down without having to resort to magical flight or rope.

"Hmm... should we go back and check the rooms that Dyrant's describing? Heroes always explore the current level before heading down, right?"

Glimmil trots ahead towards the black statue and peers into the room with the wooden chest.

Glimmil begins to trot ahead astride Cog, wondering if Dyrant or Toffitt will give the chest a closer look before he tries to open it.

Glimmil brings out his spoons and prepares to make sweet tones with them once again to dissipate the magic on the chest.

Glimmil brings the spoons together too quickly and a cloud of roiling smoke shot through with white-hot embers explodes forth from the chest and fills the room. At the same time the pillar rises up through the floor to the ceiling trapping those in the room.

Why always fire. Give me cold any time. Toffitt quaffs an extract and sprays it on his comrades. Resist fire 30 for 40 minutes, except 30 for Cog. He then turns his attention back to opening the chest.
