Glimmil |
I realize Glimmil was down 50hp after the derro attack, but I don't catch any post-combat healing.
Glimmil wouldn't have let people continue injured, and would've used a channel to heal folks up.
Channel: 7d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2, 4, 2, 5, 6) = 24
If he was the only one hurt left, he'd drink one of the potions.
Cure Serious Potion: 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (6, 4, 3) + 5 = 18
This takes Glimmil from 104/154 to 146/154.

Oh I'll deal, Cheezemaster. Just didn't realize until just now how much Toffitt's become specialized around his blade. And me without a back up. Good thing he's got that Holy Bow.

Evil, but sound tactics.
At high level play, I often use AoOs for the disarm and trip maneuvers with anything that has some smarts, reach and a decent CMB. I'll use trip if the monster is alone, and disarm if the creature has a buddy who can pick up the weapon.
It actually makes a lot of sense - most heroes aren't so heroic without their weapon, regardless if it's a scimitar, greatsword or rapier - especially if the weapon is perceived to overcome the creature's DR (whether by crafted material or sheer magic power and raw damage).
Sadly... weapon cords exist.

Why would, say, the bearer of an artifact sword need a 5 gp weapon cord? That just sounds unnecessary to me. :-p

My initial impression is that there is a lot you could do while paralyzed. Ages ago I had a character built with that idea in mind. Before getting into the house-rule, I'd say the RAW supports it. Paralysis reads in part:
A paralyzed character cannot move, speak, or take any physical action. He is rooted to the spot, frozen and helpless. Not even friends can move his limbs. He may take purely mental actions, such as casting a spell with no components.
A winged creature flying in the air at the time that it becomes paralyzed cannot flap its wings and falls. A swimmer can't swim and may drown.
It's not like being stunned or dazed. You aren't losing your standard action, your physical abilities are just being limited. The flavor text of smite evil says "call out", but I don't believe a literal shouting is required. So, you're good on smiting.
Likewise, though suspiciously not affected, most of Dyrant's hexes should work.
Atol is out of luck as channeling requires him to "be able to present" his holy symbol. Even if pinned to the chest, emblazoned on a shield, there is definitely an active physical action required--at least in my opinion. Similarly, Glimmil can't lay on hands as he does not have a free hand to touch himself.
Finally, in regards to the fly, I believe you could fly. However, I would impose a penalty to fly checks for being helpless (Helpless: A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent's mercy. A helpless target is treated as having a Dexterity of 0 (–5 modifier)). I'm not sure what people's fly checks are at, so I'm not sure how much of a problem this will be.
Glimmil |
Dex 0 would alone be -7 on Glimmil's Fly checks. Then, he has the added fun of full plate and a heavy steel shield.
He wouldn't be attempting anything complex though, which is apparently what mandates a check.
You generally need only make a Fly check when you are attempting a complex maneuver. Without making a check, a flying creature can remain flying at the end of its turn so long as it moves a distance greater than half its speed.
I'll update in a bit, but assume Glimmil uses mental control over the Fly spell to withdraw and to activate a Smite Evil.

As far as presenting my holy symbol goes, remember I do have a birthmark of my holy symbol on my left wrist. Dunno that I can 'present' it, but I am in contact with it.
I'd agree that I can't channel because I can't 'present' it, but just throwing that out there to muddy the waters.

I find that most of the encounters presented as options in the book are very easy for a group of high level characters--and I'll acknowledge that I'm having a hard time coming up with non-combat hazard encounters that can't be easily overcome by the party.
You had the opportunity to fight two BBG's and there's at least one more I want to give you the chance to fight so I'm going to move onto this when the party is ready. We might be able to get some roleplay out of the temple, but after that be sure to spend a couple minutes healing, etc. I'll then fast forward 1d??? minutes to the next BBG.

If you don't mind, I think I'd like to switch up Toffitt's level feat and formula, taking Furious Focus instead of Extra Discovery (wings) and Overland Flight for his formula.

Providing a little game mechanic advice here--partly to get my goals clear in my head also. Partly it's stalled because of my availability this week, but also it doesn't feel as if the party has tipped the scales in any one direction. Obviously diplomacy has been attempted without much success, but also without provoking a fight at this point. At the same time the party seems aware of the potential for violence. I think I'm just looking for a bit more resolution before I go one way or another. And of course, there are always out of the box options.

Any recommendations for a laptop capable of handling video editing?
No recommendations here. Just wondering how many ice bucket challenges you'll be doing to need all that video editing.
Atol Lem |
Assuming you're going for a Windows box I can't help much as that's not my forte. If you head over to the Apple side of things let me know and I can give some buying advice.
That said, the video software should have some minimum suggestions. You might head online and do a little Googling to see if folks have any success at that level or if you need more like double the RAM they indicate (that was my experience with image editing software back in the day).
Good luck!

True, Macs are more expensive. But, you can get some good used stuff at PowerMax (link).
I haven't bought a new Mac in, er, over a decade now. Nor has anyone in my family. I've never had a hardware problem (until end of life - flaky hard drive). You can save a bundle this way, and it's a good outfit. They're very helpful when there's the unexpected. Good customer support.

Our own little Glimmil! Just don't give him an adamantine hammer until he's at least 30 lb. Congrats, man!
