Matt, Game Master |
Pretty much, yeah.
We'll see what Matt says.
Matt is back, after dealing with a dumb laptop who decides that internet was not required today =_=
In any case, I let players roleplay reactions and attitudes towards NPCs but I've usually not allowed the use of intimidate for example on PCs as they are masters of their own reactions. You can still use the skills to accrue bonuses or give others penalties.
You can still roll the check but it's up to the responding player to determine his or her actions.
Leylyn Rhydoc |
Leylyn: Oh goodness, I'm not sure if I can deal with Pinkie Pie the bard... XD
Whahahaha!
Seriously though, I don't know what gave me the idea, but if you get past her immature aspects and craziness, you pretty much have a cg bard. I always seem to become board of playing bards IRL games. I want to try something different with this one and that is one of my answers.
Oh yeah, I remember now. When I was reading the game thread I thought "wow, everyone is playing such serious characters..." then the idea of playing a "pinke pie" bard seemed immensely fun.
I guess we will see how it turns out. If it ends up being too obnoxious or something let me know and I will tone her down. :)
Edit: holy crap! the gameplay is already at two pages and the game hasn't even officially started yet?! I hope I can keep up with you guys! XD
Matt, Game Master |
Yeah we've got some serious role playing going down. As stated in the game thread, I officially start the campaign at 8 PM on Friday (Montreal time, currently at UTC/GMT -4 hours) The tavern's getting pretty heated while we wait so you're welcome to jump in. I also am rather glad for some lighthearted characters. It should make for some great interaction!
Koldir Shadowhammer |
Heheh, I should point out that while he is gruff, Koldir is certainly not a serious person at heart. With the trickery domain especially, he's not one to pass up a good prank.
EDIT: Just a heads up, I'm off to bed now, I'll be back in 7 hours or so.
Matt, Game Master |
Same for me lads, the good old bed calls. Keep up the great work and we'll have an adventure to remember! I've been thinking up ways of managing 9 players in combat without having to add more creatures to each encounter and I think I've got something. You'll all be privy to it soon. In any case, I have no college classes on Thursdays so I should be online most of tomorrow while studying for end of term exams.
Leon the Landless |
I've found that Maximizing monster HP works pretty well. If it's still not enough, go to 150%, or even double normal max.
I ran with a GM that actually added HD for large groups. It worked until 5th level. After that monster saves were so high that they never failed, and DCs were so high they couldn't be beaten. That's when we discovered the "just raise the HP, not the HD" trick. (Took about 5 PC deaths to get there)
Matt, Game Master |
That might work actually. I'll have to do some tests on my side for combat NPCs especially. On another note, which Experience Track would you all prefer we keep? Going with the fact that we are 9 players and on a PbP, I suggest either Fast or Moderate. Slow might be... a little lengthy. I was thinking of using Fast myself.
Leylyn Rhydoc |
I can actually do that too. It's my preferred method but I didn't know if others liked it. The campaign is naturally split into chapters (one per level) and I'd be fine with just awarding the level when the milestones are achieved
Fine by me. Pbp is slow though. the longest game I played was 1 1/2 years long and we just only reached level 5. just to give you an idea.
Leon the Landless |
Any chance of tracking progress toward Achievement Feats for this game? I find that satisfies the itch to track game progress numerically, and feels more like a personal goal when you reach the payoff.
I think it would be pretty easy to take the ones listed as a template and adapt them (or similar things) to this game.
Leylyn Rhydoc |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Graverisen prereqs: die and be brought back at least twice For some reason this feat made me think of this.
Leon the Landless |
Spoilers bad!
Some might work though. Healer's Touch and History Of Scars, Gifted Mesmerist, and Relentless Butcher would work in just about any game since they track direct character action, not anything campaign-setting specific.
Anything spoilerific could be tracked by you until it wouldn't be a spoiler.
Tim Deamon |
That sounds good to me as well, I just hope it doesn't take a year and a half to get to lvl 5. That,s when things start to get good and everyone starts at one and none of the games Ive played in the last 6 years went beyond 3, with two really short lived exceptions.
Baster of the Peacock |
Hello all !
I just posted in the gameplay thread and I'm super glad to join this merry band of questers :-) !
I'm all right with levelling when the GM sees fit.
Achievement Feats sound great. I'm gonna have a look at them.
Jevon Ryker |
I'm living in China at the moment, so y'all's bed time is my get up time. If Leylyn accepts Jevon's offer to dance before I get back on, he will be doing that until I post again or she has better things to do.
PS: Hi Baster!
Koldir Shadowhammer |
My vote for exp/leveling: Faster is better. I don't think I've ever been in a game when we leveled up too quickly and were robbed of fun. If you have set chapters for the campaign, might it be possible to set it up so that the low levels advance more quickly, but it slows down around 4 or 5? That makes sure that we don't blow through all 20 levels with no sense of gratification, but also makes sure we we're not stuck at levels 1 and 2 forever.
Just my two cents here, I won't have issue with any sort of advancement :D
EDIT: Let me also just say, letting the PCs mingle before the adventure technically starts and without any DM enforced plot happening is ridiculously entertaining. *High fives Matt*
Baster of the Peacock |
Matt, I have added The life of Baster so far and A tale of Thorns to my character's profile.
The latter text contains some minor geographical elements, which I hope you will be okay with.
Matt, Game Master |
Well then if everyone's alright with it, we'll go with set leveling. I'll shorten the initial chapters as I agree that hitting level 5 is the magic time for character development.
Koldir Shadowhammer |
Well... YOU JUST BECAME ONE OF THEM :D
Also, once we're out of the tavern I doubt the social interactions will be quite so chaotic. I've certainly been part of conversations where you just need to choose what you'll hear. Also, if your character is overwhelmed you can just play that and not worry about the convo itself.
Matt, Game Master |
After tomorrow it'll be a lot simpler. There's going to be less free for all chatter (though you can very well do it if you wish) and NPC interactions will really begin. We have a very "interactive" group to say the least. 17 hours and 15 minutes to game officially begins! And I hope you dont mind that I gave you this three day interactive crash course to get some personality in. I think its going quite well!

Coming from the CN guy, he comes of as young or naive. If that's what you want then great. However if you want him to come off as more experienced, give him a little less lawful and a little more confidence. Not a criticism by any means, I think he's great. Just a matter of the impression he gives. Maybe he's more in his element in the field and not in a bar. -shrug-
Edit: This is the most fun I've had in a PBP game and it hasn't even started yet. This is only my third one, but still. Also the weird thing about being in China is I'm a day ahead. So I totally thought it started today and was disappoint ~_~'
Baster of the Peacock |
Baster, every time I read your name I picture the man in your avatar staring into the oven at a peacock with that expression on his face saying "Yup, needs another bastin'."
That just cracked me up :-D.
Though, to be honest, the name has more to do with him being a true "bastard".
I hope I'm giving him justice in the gameplay thread x-).

The naive angle is what I am pushing. He spent most of his life in blind admiration of Eveldine. He hasn't really had any social interaction outside of his training in the paladin order.
As long as that's coming across, I'm happy.
I'm not too far from your current part of the world living in Australia so I know the feeling.
Having a blast and the game hasn't even started.
Koldir Shadowhammer |
I'm not used to RPing people with 6 Charisma D:
This is quite fun though... and though Koldir has acted like a nice person so far, Jevon and the nobles have been stirring up the parts of himself he tries to ignore...

Jevon Ryker |
You mentioned you would work a gun into Jevon's future at some point. I am planning on using large two-handed firearms, hopefully modified with some sort of bayonet. But I don't like how the Axe Musket and Hammer Musket lose 2 steps of damage dice, for the ability to melee which I probably won't use much. I was thinking a bayonet would do like 1d4 or 1d6 damage and modify the weight (possibly the misfire value?). Along the lines of shield spikes for a shield.
If that's not something you want to mess with then I guess I'll probably go with Quick Draw and crafting a bunch of pistols instead. Just a heads up on my thoughts.

Jevon Ryker |
After reading the class and archetypes more thoroughly I propose the following. I change Jevon's Cha to 12 and his Wis to 13. Then when I take gunslinger I will go Musket Master instead of Mysterious Stranger. Bayonet thing I leave up to you. Is that acceptable?
Leylyn Rhydoc |
I forgot to get my favorite weapon, a sling and I forgot to buy ammunition for that and my bow! I have enough to buy the sling ammo, but I will have to drop my sun rod to afford the arrows. Is it alright to adjust that on my sheet? (this would have been before the 25gp down payment, so I can't use that to purchase these.) Leylyn may be a bit off the wall, but she ain't foolish enough to not get ammo!
Tim Deamon |
yeah at a real computer again! And I am sleeping soundly with my stuff under the blankets and me hanging in my "hammock" from the ceiling. Or is it the other way around? wait Im under the bed actually haha fooled all the intruders. particularly those wannabe troublemakers from the evening. hahahaha ha ha.
