Koldir Shadowhammer |
Hey guys, I'm still alive, I'm so sorry, I left on a rather sudden packpacking trip, and haven't been back to the forums since I returned. Koldir was lying in his cabin during the whole storm, so hopefully it hasn't caused major problems- I'll be posting again now if that's alright.
Leylyn Rhydoc |
I might be starting up a P.P.B.P. (Pony Play by post) if there is enough interested people. Here is a link if anyone is.
Matt, Game Master |
I will be going into the woods for a week or so on a camping trip. This means that I highly doubt I will have access to internet.
I apologize for this delay in everyone's gaming schedules and I hope to be back before you know it!
P.S. If bears devour me, give a short prayer to Cayden Cailean for me eh?
Roshan |
Aldus too.
I'm still here, the RP was very insular for a while and I didn't want to clog up the gameplay threads with a random post about how Aldus is magicking in his cabin. This past week I got pretty sick and so haven't checked in a little bit so I missed the parts where you were talking about me but if you mention Aldus that'll flag the post for me and I'll reply if you're addressing me.

Cabin fever ? Noooooo... ;-) !
I love wilderness survival !
In my home game, I even got rid of Create Water and Endure Elements spells so I could tell tales of Humans surviving against Nature (or is it Humans surviving amongst Nature ?)
Leon the Landless |
You get rid of them because with then it's only survival for a night (for the divine casters), or a level, or until they can hole up in a cave for enough time to research (for wizards).
Sorcerers probably wouldn't take those spells due to having a more limited selection, but most other casters it's pretty easy to get new low-level spells.
Tim Deamon |
Well food is needed for survival as well, for the divine perhaps you are right for the short term survival but the for the wizard, why would they have that spell?
That kind of spell would be hard to find as it is a specialty spell only even looked for by those who go into the wild all the time and thus would be had by those who would have mundane ways of doing the same thing if the spell wasn't available.
Thus Bear Grills (however you spell it, since I have no idea how) and the army would have it but for merchants and city folk it would be rare.
The army and Bear Grills don't count since it wouldn't be much of a story for them anyway, so just make those spells hard to find outside specialists.
As for divine casters, one thought I was considering is the need to learn spells similar to a wizard so they have a limited list from which to prep spells, this would explain how divine casters can research personal spells and how deities can give different spells to followers and how a cleric can, not have a deity to begin with.
-
note,
Most casters have a limited list and a lot of them don't include such spells on their list and one change in PF is that only spells on one's own spell list can be researched.
So it seems to me only divine casters get easy and that still doesn't account for trying to find food.
Baster of the Peacock |
It seems simpler to me to just say those spells don't exist.
Actually, I simplified (for the sake of simplicity :-) a bit the way I deal with those spells in my home game:
Endure Elements doesn't exist.
Create Water is a level 3 spell (level 2 for druid)
Create Food and Water becomes Create Food, and is a level 4 spell.
This way, my players get to play in a setting where survival in the wilderness and nature matter until levels 6-8.
Incidentally, this give the rangers and druids characters many opportunities to shine during the game.
A big part of my love for the medieval fantasy genre has to do with the vastness and danger of untamed wilderness, and nature in general.
With a world that has not been thoroughly tamed by humans.
IRL I live in western europe, which is probably the tamest part of the world, nature-wise.
Tim Deamon |
if it works for you I guess,
but truthfully if magic were real creating water would be one of the simpler things to do compared to most spell effects, for it simply requires drawing it out of the air (which wouldn't work as well in the desert for obvious reasons).
The biggest hurdle in survival is lack of knowledge on how to do things, rather then the inability to do them.
Leon the Landless |
Tim, I don't want to start a conflict, but your character is coming off as a jerk. If you're playing it that way on purpose, no problem. It's just RP. If not, there's a few things you should probably be made aware of-
First off, Jevon didn't reveal anything about our mission. He just made a bad joke about Tiny being the reason for the crash. Read his post again. Anyone overhearing it would not have guessed it had any real significance than someone trying to lighten the mood with morbid humor.
Then you went and said
"...try not to go revealing every little piece of information the should be kept quiet!
...there may not be an insider at all, which is another reason why we were to investigate, which doesn't include throwing accusations around because you're angry."
Which basically revealed the full scope of the plan and our purpose to anyone in earshot. You can't call someone out for revealing things, and then reveal even more with your next breath.
Finally, you're jumping to conclusions about what's left of the ship, and about the possibility of enemies near by. You might be right, but rather than tossing out contradictory directions, you might try asking for more details or making a few relevant rolls to gain more information.
Tim Deamon |
He wasn't making a joke for he said in the post he was angrily kicking things and a lot can be inferred from what he did say including prior knowledge of a traitor, though I admit not everyone thinks as deeply as I do, therefore maybe others wouldn't catch as much from his words as I do.
Tim revealing everything afterwards was because he believed it was revealed enough that at least the traitor would have caught onto it so he wants the traitor to believe that Tim has given up trying to catch him or her.
As for the ship, if it hit hard enough to NOT be significantly intact then no one would have survived the crash, not to mention you also assumed, rather illogically, that the ship was so destroyed that you would have to gather timbers to make a roof. From what I recall we are supposed to have a little play with our descriptions anyway.
Edit, the enemies
Tim saw creatures in the storm, the storm seemed odd, and the group had recently been attacked by a dragon. Tim feels it very likely that enemies are nearby.
Leon the Landless |
regardless of whether any or all of these things are the case, your character is making people pretty angry.
If that's just RP, no problem. If it's not, well, I thought you might appreciate it if someone brought it to your attention.
Even if the ship is even partially intact, it would be a really bad idea to stay at the crash site. If there are enemies, that's the first place they'll head.
Jevon Ryker |
I'm not mad or anything. However when I posted that, I just assumed that it was only seekers present, and it was intended to be mostly a joke. I think what we're lacking here is information on what exactly the situation is. We don't know what's up with the ship damage wise, we don't know how many people lived, etc...
In character Jevon has antagonized Tim from the beginning so it would be totally understandable for Tim to go off on him. I'm also trying to have Jevon "grow up" a bit now that we've been playing for a while. The intent is for him to become slowly less of a dick.
Matt, Game Master |
Sorry for the delay, I'm not used to explosive campaigns like this one quite yet.
To fully clarify the situation:
- No one aside from your group still knows your mission.
- The ship is very badly damaged and certainly in no flying condition. I'd say at least a good 1/3 of the ship is scrap and the rest badfly damaged. It was luck that saved you all on this one.
- As for enemies, the airborne creatures have not been re-sighted but the sky above is still dark.

Neither it was the GM! (Herbert if I recall correctly)
If you don't know, go Here
Baster of the Peacock |
I took the liberty of moving our search party to the lake's shore. But that doesn't mean I'm not interested by our conversation during the trek in the dark forest - quite the contrary, in fact.
Feel free to do some flashback woodland dialogue if you feel like it, and Baster will be happy to reply.
Leon the Landless |
Goblins starts out kind of cheezy with self-aware gaming humor (kind of like Order of the Stick), but after about a year in the archives it turns into a really engaging narrative with flat out amazing artwork. Also, some of the villains and monsters are pure distilled nightmare fuel.
Leylyn Rhydoc |
I used to read goblins too. Been a while though, I should check up on it.
I recommend you guys check out Dominic Deegan: Oracle for hire! It's probably my favorite web comic.
Baster of the Peacock |
I second what Leon just said ! No, I triple it !
Well, you get the idea, Matt... I love this campaign :-) !
You have to understand: The Grail won't escape my grasp, and then my power will be absolute !
Huuu, I mean... Sorry, I had a cliched evil character moment there (must be an allergic reaction to the pollen in the woods, or something) ;-) !
Ithriel Latairn |
I'm with Leon and Baster on this one. The first PbP I joined has just been shelved, so that makes this the longest one I've been in. Besides, I really like Ithriel, he's had so many incarnations from Pen and Paper to WoW (had at least three versions there) that I want to see how he fairs here.
