Stonewall looks at the woman's uniform and tries to determine her rank and how to address her.

profession: Soldier: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

He rolls his eyes at Odie's amorous advances and bumps him out of the way. "Just trying to maintain order ma'am." Ah, a chance to establish contact with the soldiers! "My name is Kargold Steelpounder recently from Sargavan army at Eleder.

She looks at Odie askance and says, "A drunk? There's more of those here than I'd care to admit, half-orc, but that's a likely excuse for someone looking for a fight."

She turns to Stonewall and says, "Eleder, eh? You must know old captain Tyklanda. Still blaming that limp on his desk job, I bet? Name's Adaela Praet, sheriff of this muggy backwater. Maybe you can tell me what happened here."

Stonewall:
She's local militia, as are the two soldiers on either side of her. Pridon's Hearth is too new to have any official uniforms. Hers seems to come from the city of Freehold in Sargava. Tyklanda was your commander, and she obviously knows what she's talking about too.

Alset, speaking out of the side of his mouth to Odie, "Well played, Ross. He wasn't so drunk that he knew he couldn't win."

Alset helps Gallio to his feet. "Are you well, Gallio? Do you know the sheriff?"

Stonewall looks the most confident you've seen him as he interacts with the sheriff and relaxes his stiff posture, gently resting his shield on the ground and leaning on it slightly as he responds, "Yes ma'am, cranky as ever about it too, but he was a good commander in spite of it. I didn't have much contact with Freehold though." At this Stonewall straightens up and adopts a more formal posture. Well ma'am, my fellow travelers and I were disembarking from our vessel" said with not small amount of disgust, "when this fellow started yelling and carrying on about the merchant over there, Gallio by name. He's going on about foreigner leeches and such when the drunk smashes the bottle and starts waving it around. We just thought someone ought to stop him before he got carried away.". He gestures at the other 3 of the group as though to ask if they have anything to add.

Gallio stumbles around, still shaken from the whole ordeal. "No no, this is my first time to set foot outside of Eleder. But if she gives you trouble come talk to me. I'll have my papayas to attend to, of course, but I'd gladly repay those that saved my life."

Adaela sighs and rubs her temples. "That'll be Theos," she says. "He lost his wife and son to malaria soon after he arrived here. Blames newcomers are going to steal his livelihood, no matter what we say or do."

She motions to the two guards flanking her. "Lock him up until he's sober." They leave to track down Theos.

She sizes up the four of you, nodding to herself. "Like I said before, I'm understaffed. Why don't you four come have dinner with me at the Stone Hall? You're smart enough to avoid trouble when you see it, so I'd like to discuss a local matter with you."

Commander Adaela leads you through Pridon's Hearth, past wooden shacks and tents smelling of fish and filth. As you cross a rickety bridge, you realize you had set foot on a small island outside of the city proper. On the mainland itself the buildings are a little better kept; some are even painted, though all are covered in moss, algae, and the occasional tropical weed. People seem to fill the streets, mostly laborers sweaty from a day of hard work in the muggy heat.

Two stone buildings rise above the wooden shingles on the mainland, and the commander takes you to the shorter of the two near the shore. Inside, the air is cool and dry, and a large pot of soup is simmering gently over a fire by a window, a halfling stirring the broth absently. Adalea motions to the bowls and the halfling nods. She then leads you past a number of small rooms with gates for doors, some stocked with weapons and armor, others with paper-wrapped packages or aging casks. She takes out a key and unlocks the gate to a room labelled "Sharifs' Offiss" in Common and sits down behind a tiny wooden desk. There are two small chairs and barely enough room to stand behind them.

She spreads her hands at her meager office and says, "The perks of government work."

Moments later the halfling brings in five bowls of soup on a tray, steaming and smelling delicious. The commander thanks the servant and awkwardly hands out the food herself in the tiny room.

"I hope you like turtle and taro root," she says. She exchanges pleasantries with you as the meal goes on before diving into her real purpose.

"We are an insular community here at Pridon's Hearth. We've got a few farmlands surrounding us, but aside from ships every few days from Eleder we have no contact with the outside world. To protect ourselves, we maintain a fort 12 miles south of here to watch for any potential problems. But Fort Breakthrough hasn't reported to me in 2 weeks; in itself this isn't unusual, they're a disorganized lot, but my personnel usually jump at the chance to return to civilization, even what passes for it here. But I can't spare any of my recruits, and I doubt they'd make it that far without imagining jaguars and tyrannosaurs behind every tree along the way.

"A confident lot like you though? You'd tell me if anything was truly out of place. I'd like you four to head south and investigate Fort Breakthrough, and report back to me whatever is going on down there." She reaches down into her desk and plops a bag of gold onto the table. "There'd be payment, of course."

Feel free to react/describe what your character does during each step of the way. This is a big info dump so we don't take forever, but feel free to expand the conversation or the walk through town if you so desire.

"Uh, what's a tyrannosaur?" Odie asks "I don't recognize that word."

Will there be a big gate that opens as we head into the jungle? Will the Jurassic Park theme music play?

Odie blatantly reaches for the bag and asks:
"Do you have supplies here that we can use? A map maybe? Also, someone on the boat mentioned there might be a language barrier..."

I've been played before, I'd rather it not happen again... also I assume this whole bag isn't for us, but I'll try this anyway. It's worth a shot, and I didn't really see a place for her to store supplies.

Walking through the city and toward the stone hall, I would think this place that houses the law for the city would be better maintained, also strange that it is on the edge rather than interior.

After eating and loudly proclaimed, "compliments to the chef, excellent soup!"

"I would be happy to help, but I have a question as well. What kind of thing usually troubles Fort Breakthrough? And how many soldiers are stationed there?"

Male Dwarf Tower Shield Specialist (Level 6) [Init+1 | Per:+5 | SM:+1 | F:+9 R:+5 (+2 vs burst) W:+5 (+3 vs Sp,SLA,Poison) | AC: 25(T:10 FF:24) (+2 vs crit) | CMD:25 (+8 vs Bull Rush/+4 vs Overrun & Trip) | Speed:30ft | HP:51]

As they approach the sheriff's office (every time I type that, I want to put sherriff like in LotR) Stonewall gestures to large stone building next to it and says, "Whats that there?"

He elects to stand in the office as they eat and you hear a soft "mmm" come from him as he chews while he closes his eyes and savors the soup.

Stonewall tried to estimate how much money is in the bag.

Adaela laughs. "A tyrannosaur is a dinosaur that'll swallow you whole first chance she gets. I wouldn't worry about them though. By the time you see her, you'll already be dead.

"You can use the money to supply yourselves. I don't have a map, unfortunately. But 12 miles south along a muddy trail should take you 3 hours," she eyes the two dwarfs small stature, "Maybe four. The Whitherroot farm lies halfway between if you need a place to rest. And every one of my militia speaks Common well enough, even if their writing leaves something to be desired." She sighs as she eyes her office's label.

"The reason we maintain the fort is against pirates or humanoid raiders. The gripplis (humanoid frog race) and halflings in the Korir River Delta never give us too much trouble, though I believe that's in part because we have the fort in the first place. The real bad ones, the boggards and lizardfolk, never give us any trouble south of the Big Tiger River. And if it's not any humanoid tribe its dinosaurs or shambling mounds taking out livestock and trampling crops.

It's actually Appraise to determine how much something is worth, which dwarves are better at if it has precious metals. It has about 200 silver coins inside.

"In fact, you'll want to head there after our dinner. I don't quite have enough money, but I'll write you a note of credit for however much makes the total 100 gold pieces. And I'll give you 50 gold each upon your return."

She gets out a piece of paper and writes a note of credit for the remainder of the money.

"Any other questions?"

You've been on a ship all day and the sun is setting/has set. The soup was your dinner.

"If you're looking for supplies, Northwind Smithy has arms and armor. Heri's Conservatorium is run by a crackpot, but she has the only place for potions and herbs. If you can't find anything at those places, Oyin Emporium has everything that's not magical for sale; trail rations, mosquito nets, and so on.

"And the only place to stay that puts a roof over your head is the Bloated Unicorn."

The Countinghouse of Abadar is a taller and more impressive building than the one that houses Adaela's office. It stands near the southern gate at a crossroads, its imposing edifice visible from anywhere in town. You notice a plaque that states the day construction was completed; the Stone Hall was completed merely a day before. You saw a similar plaque on the Stone Hall earlier.

Inside its iron doors a withered old woman in pale yellow robes and a golden chain with a large key around her neck approaches you with the look of a used horse salesperson.

Alset:
You recognize the key as Abadar's Key, a symbol of a high ranking cleric of Abadar.

"Welcome, weary travelers, I am Banker Baldera. Here to open a new account are you? We have a wonderful discount on signing fees. And we have our adventurer's guarantee to protect any assets you leave in our care, like that shiny shield you have there young dwarf. She sighs and takes the note from you.

"Ah, Commander Adaela has you running her errands, hmm? Luckily for you, she already paid the processing fee."

She shuffles off into some back room and returns after what seems an eternity with eight gold stacks of coins.

"Sorry for taking so long. I rely on my acolytes to run these small matters, but my assistant this week hasn't returned from Fort Breakthrough on tour duty quite yet. I guess the jungle breezes are more pleasing than counting coins."

Interesting, another person effected by the fort breakthrough contact. "When is your assistant supposed to be back from Fort Breakthrough?" Ood said as he rubbed his chin pondering, I wonder how much this town relies on the few men at Fort Breakthrough.

Temple of Theseus, Chimera Cove, Andoran | Kuthona (Dec) 22, 4719 Part Three Map: The Sexton and the Saint

She pulls up a chair and sits down slowly, saying, "It's been five days since Quint was supposed to be back scrubbing floors. I have about a dozen of the young things so we rotate them out regular-like to the Fort to toughen them up, and give those rowdy soldiers some religious guidance. It's nothing to worry about, unless you happen to be headed that direction anyway. But with the Lawgiver's blessings weighing you down, I don't imagine a rough crowd like you would be headed anywhere but the Bloated Unicorn to blow your coin on fights and gambling."

If you mention you're headed to Fort Breakthrough, she says:

Spoiler:
"Well, you folks aren't as hardhearted as you look. The standard private investigations fee is 20 gold, and if you recover Quince or, Abadar protect us, his body, that's another 20 for a recovery of a missing person or their remains. I can't stand the thought of any of my young acolytes stranded in the wilderness. Quest has such a nice mother back home in Kalabuto."

Stonewall grabs his 25 coins and puts them in his coin pouch. While doing this, he asks, "And which way is the Bloated Unicorn?". He walks, clinking and rattling toward the door as she answers. After she tells him, he he leaves, but as he is half way out the door, he says I've his shoulder, "We'll check on him on our way," but does not wait for a response. Stonewall crosses back past the Stone Hall, noticing its less-than-stellar stonework, and heads east along the beach, smaller islands with tents and shacks on them a across the waters. Not far down the road is the Bloated Unicorn, a sturdy building constructed of local lumber, with doors leading directly into individual rooms from the outside. There is no front entrance, only a piece of canvas stretched over a wooden desk and a half-elf woman behind it. She has a knotted mass of curly black hair waving over her thin and pointed face.

"Welcome to the Bloated Unicorn, I'm Maharbel, proprietor of the best inn south of Port Freedom. You must be one of the new arrivals from Eleder. Oh, a private room? It's 5 silver a night, or 2 gold if you want the amenities.

"And don't worry, we have plenty of drink, food, and entertainment if you so desire. It's behind you, on the beach."

She motions over your shoulder to sands, where green and red lights dance over open air tables filled with a dozen patrons enjoying their dinner under the last rays of the sunset, the waves lapping against the beach quite calmly.

She leans in close and says, "You like a good fight? Come to the beach when the tide turns, around midnight, if you want to see a good brawl."

"Oh the usual sins of a militant life. Theft, drunkenness, laziness, and occasional cruelty. Having a fresh face there keeps them on good behavior better than an old woman like me. Not that I could make the trip anyway. The acolyte also performs weekly religious ceremonies on Sunday and can serve as a neutral party between disputes. We're the only temple here, you see; we had a priest of Erastil, but he's been missing for, oh, six months. A year? Long enough for his temple to fall into ruin, that's how long.

"I'll be honest with you," she says, a look of resignation coming over her. You can tell she hasn't had another mature religious figure to talk to in some time. "It wears me thin, dealing with these folks. They like to cheat and lie and kill, breaking what little law we have here as often as they can. Judging by that symbol," she says, pointing to Iomedae's sword, "You'd like the evil acts to stop as well. And judging by the fact that symbol's on a shield, I'd say you've a strong enough temperament to do something about it. You might be able to knock some sense into them. And I do mean knock."

Her eyes wander off into the distance, imagining a few specific heads she would like to see get knocked in. You're not quite sure if she's fallen asleep or not when she refocuses her gaze back to you. "Enough from an old woman like me. We can talk more once you find out what's going on out at the Fort."

Alset replies with as comforting a smile as possible, "I'll be more than pleased to talk to you on our return about straightening up a few morals and lives. It is amazing what a little faith and motivation can do for the soul, which, of course, usually results in improved behavior." Alset turns and leaves in search of the shops and his traveling companions.

Alset finds Odie at Heri's Conservatorium. The room is filled with potions, vials, bottles, and strange liquids, stinking of ammonia and iodine. The floorboards are stained with all sorts of murky colors, a few of the wooden planks burnt straight through from acid.

"This poor man needs some help," a halfling woman with stains up her arms to match the floorboards says.

She points to Odie, who is standing slack-jawed in front of a small pen with a dozen goats, two mules, and five pigs.

"I need this pig," Odie says.

Stonewall hands over a gold piece, "Just a room" and gets his change. He heads to his room and heaves his pack off with a sigh. On to this Oyin Emporium I guess. He takes off his armor and most of his weapons but keeps his flail, dagger and Igvir.

He goes down and asks Maharbel, "I need a few things. I need directions to Oyin Emporium. Also, I will need bread, cheese and honey in the morning." After getting directions, he heads over and gets his list:

2 yards canvas
1 water skin
1 hunting knife

After getting his items, he heads to the gate and makes small talk with the guards. I need to learn more about the town if i'm going to be staying here.

diplomacy (gather information): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17

He also checks over the fortifications near the gate while he's at it.

knowledge engineering: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

After that, he just trudges his way back to his room and hits the sack.

Anyone is welcome to come with me but i'm not waiting around

I count 3.7 gp in expenses.

Maharbel will have Stonewall's breakfast ready in the morning, at the expected cost of 3 silver. Oyin gives him no trouble with the remaining items, though she is a bit cantankerous.

At the gate, a young guard named Farad chats with Stonewall. "I was here with Count Servius Narsus, been four years now. I was a slave, but he done freed all of us when he founded the city. Would of been nice, but then he didn't think he had to provide any meals or protection, the old coot. But then he done gone died from malaria. His son, Lethar Narsus, runs the place now, but he don't seem to like it much. Only reason he hasn't left us is that fever tree in the Narsus Forest makes him too much money. The bark from that tree cures malaria, yellow fever, and all sorts of them diseases. The Count sent out them letters that sent you here just this past year. Lots of lumber and mining jobs, perfect for a dwarf like you. Uh, no offense meant."

The fortifications are quite sound, obviously done with a skilled hand, though not a dwarf's hand. They must be in near constant repair from the humidity, and you guess whoever is paid upkeep on the walls has good job security from repairs alone. There are not, however, any breakwaters, levees, or dikes on the surrounding islands.

Remove the cost from your character and on the excel sheet (I think that's how the excel sheet works...) and you'll be good to go.

I meant a loaf of bread and block of cheese and a jar of honey, multiple servings. That would be 1gp, 1 sp and 2 cp according to this site

Noted, gotcha. She'll give that to you now then, or whenever you want it.

Alset takes Odie by the arm and leads him away from the pen and toward the supplies. "Come on, big guy, there will be time later to roast a pig on a spit. We've got to get ready to leave in the morning. And, that means getting our supplies and then a room." Alset helps Odie acquire whatever is necessary. When the transaction is complete, they head toward the Oyin Emporium to get the rest of their supplies. Then they'll head to the Bloated Unicorn to get a couple of rooms.

After getting a room, Alset returns to the building where they last saw Commander Adaela. He wants to ask her about her Iomedaen tattoo and her current religious beliefs and standing. He also will ask about other religions in the area if Adaela is receptive to questions.

Odie buys whatever was on that list of his from the Discussion page at Heri's and at Oyin Emporium. I think it was ~15 gp worth?

Odie comes away happy, not only having bought the possession needed for a day of travel in the jungle, but he also purchased a pig; a big, fat pig not for eating, but for hauling everyone's possessions across the jungle. This only cost him 3 more gold.

Odie says, "Worth every copper. He won't go into anyplace dangerous, but he can carry all our stuff! And they can sniff out mushrooms to eat if we find any. I haven't decided on a name yet though..."

Pig Stats.
Light load: 38 lbs. or less, Medium: 39–76 lbs., Heavy: 77–115 lbs. If you don't want a pig we can retcon this, but I figured Odie would really want a pig ;)

Commander Adaela is standoffish. "That was a long time ago," she says. Even if you try to coax more out of her, she refuses to say anything else.

As for other religions, she repeats the same information Valdra gave you: there's a ruined temple of Erastil where the priest disappeared some months ago, and the Countinghouse of Abadar; nothing more.

Ood followed Stonewall to the Bloated Unicorn,

After Stonewall secured a room"I also will take the basic room. And perhaps some Ale or mead when I get back from the room."

Ood left his pack and Kama in his room and went back down stairs to sit in the common area and enjoy the evening with a beverage and engage in mild conversation with the other patrons.

With all that's going on with the fort, and the commander being short staffed I wonder how the people in the town are dealing with it.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

After an hour or so I think I'm going to get some sleep, we'll have plenty to do tomorrow.

Temple of Theseus, Chimera Cove, Andoran | Kuthona (Dec) 22, 4719 Part Three Map: The Sexton and the Saint

Ood pays for the room and board and sits at a table by the beach. The air is surprisingly cool and the waves are calming, despite having heard them all day on board the ship. A bard with a withered leg sits on the sand and sings throughout the night, accompanied by a half dozen cats charmed to play the lute, flute, or drums.

Most striking of all is the bloated unicorn himself: a pygmy rhinoceros draped with a wooden saddle stuffed with kegs, bottles, and a small stove frying chapati. Maharbel leads the animal around, offering Ood his choice of the house's special of Red Foam rum or Open Palm Wine in addition to the more regular offerings.

The other patrons are mildly talkative, but speak mostly of their dislike for their boss or how the weather has been particularly stormy lately. The trouble with the fort is of no matter to them, and being short staffed means they can get away with a little more carousing than they could back in the civilized world.

One patron makes an impression on you, however: a dwarf. The only other dwarf you've seen living here.

"My name's Diomco Haftledge," he says in Dwarven. You can tell he has not had a chance to speak his native tongue in some time. "Did you try my wine? It's not very good, but what can you do without a good beehive or wheat field, eh?"

He asks for news from dwarven communities back home and is eager to hear anything about dwarven lands, about dwarves, even in Dwarven itself. He listens as long as you're willing to talk, enjoying the gruff sound of his native tongue once again.

"You must be exhausted from that horrid boat ride. Once you're settled in, be sure to come out here and for some Mud and Foam. We have a little fisticuffs around midnight, just for fun, and I'd love to see a dwarf take the title from that blasted half-orc Blackeye."
