iZombie has a D&D episode on tonight

So how was it? (I've never watched the show. The initial promos when it first premiered with the brains in noodles turned my stomach.)

That was actually one of the best representations of DnD I have seen on TV. They actually had...SHOCKER...players rolling dice (in portrayals in Big Bang Theory and Community I think only the DM ever rolled dice) and complaining about taking 2 hours to fill out a character sheet.

Also pretty positive...one of the characters was endlessy mocking DnD but at the end of game was stoked on making it a weekly thing.

They had a few places with Liv or the dead guy of the week rolled character's saving throws.

I also wasn't a fan of Liv of DnD brain rolling dice to determine what she did while not playing. I felt that was a bit too mocking of the hobby. The scene when all of the characters from the show played a game together was a lot of fun though.

One thing about the show, is that it's clear that Liv doesn't live the life of the person she's channeling - she's living a caricature of that person's life. It's actually a really fascinating thing: if a person was lecherous, she's out of control casual flirt, even when said entity had more self-control or a more suave or nuanced countenance in public. If a person was malevolent, Liv simply channels broad vitriol, failing to latch onto that person's true personality.

That's one thing the show does that I feel conflicted about: Liv becomes so consumed with whatever quirk or passion or vice or skill a given entity had, she becomes a kind of caricature of that person for the time she channels them. In some ways it helps ease any portrayal of things like this - in others... notsomuch. In any event, I'm super hyped for when this (and all the next episodes) get(s) to Netflix!

Finding the new season on Netflix was a nice surprise

Most CW shows are on Netflix within a week of the season ending now.

I would love to see D&D players portrayed as obsessed with power gaming/game theory, etc., AND really bad Star Wars puns ("These are not the druids you are looking for.").

Yep...I tend to have that problem with the show at times as well.

Mostly I think I am just tired of the case of the week format for the show. It's been mostly boring of late, and usually they tend to all feel somewhat similar (a**#+@* victim killed by a sympathetic killer who was wronged by said victim). It also means the background plots get stretched out way way too far.

That's super fair.

I actually preferred the case-of-the-week format of Season 1 to the forced-drama-character-change of Season 2 (and I was suuuuuuuuuper ticked by the <spoiler>* of Liv's relationship(s)), but I've not seen S3 (as I've only got Netflix), so that might just be a me thing.

Over-all, I highly enjoyed this series more than I thought I should be enjoying this series.

There are lots of little quirks about the show that bother me: Liv's over-exaggeration being one (though, on the other hand, it makes a certain amount of sense, as she's experiencing the impulses and nature new, for the first time, and has not had the chance to live her life under the paradigm the ones she's eaten have, so... conflicted, as noted).

I also have no idea how they're going to manage the cliffhanger for Season 2. That was... hm. ANYway...

Very happy to see no references to "7th level Gnomes" and whatnot. D&D nitpicks:

*Paladin nodding approval of drow assassin's plan to skip the quest and take the old lady's stuff up front. Perfectly fine for Major to be cool with it, since he's completely unfamiliar with the game, but Dungeon Master Liv should have called him on it.

*DM rolling dice for PC's skill checks.

*Liv rolling a d20 for something that called for a percentile check. Yeah, sure, as long as the probability is divisible by 5 it works, but Real Gamers roll percentile dice.

Two hours to make characters? With new players who don't have their own books. I buy that. I've been there.

It was nice that Clive got into it by the end of the game session, but meaningless since I'm sure we'll never see another reference to the game on the show.

I like how it's a combo of Buffy and Veronica Mars minus the teenage angst.

Actually there was a earlier reference to D&D in a episode. When the crime boss was about to kill somebody he made a reference to when he was a DM he used to give his players a God shot.

I over all liked the episode.

Freaks and Geeks is amazing! It's super cringe-worthy comedy gold.

I've known people who do that from time, but with actual physical dice. No different from flipping a coin, aside from allowing for multiple answers (such as which of these three restaurants is better for dinner). Really, it's comparable to using a magic 8 ball (which I've also seen people consult for inconsequential choices).
