Odenkirk smiles bitterly at the remarks, "We are not there yet," he replies.

Finally, after nerve-wracking hours of this, the boat pushes through the dangerous headwaters of the Taiga into the clear water of this almost uncharted mighty river.Beyond the headwaters is a land of savage wonders. The Taiga winds through a great northern forest that to the best of anyone’s knowledge has no name.

After miles and miles of picturesque pine trees frosted with new fallen snow, the ship comes to a great mountain range. This river flows through a great rift in the mountains that looks as if some impossible huge primordial giant smashed a pass through the grey slate.

You are headed south now, though this appears to have no effect on lessening the intense cold. They are headed to the great interior sea of Talingarde – Lake Tarik as it is known. To the south of that lake sits the Watch Wall. And on the northern banks in a wide wooded valley is your destination – the camp of Sakkarot Fire-Axe. Thousands of bugbears are already assembled. These savage humanoids are not pleased to see outsiders, especially humans. Worse, there are more than just bugbears here. The occasional polar bear lumbers around the camp untended. Fur-clad goblins scamper here and there, laughing with frenetic glee. Even a few hill giants gather at the camp’s fringes.

There is only one place to dock the boat – a crudely made pier that juts into the river. On that pier are four hulking bugbears. They don’t seem pleased to see the Frosthamar. For the first time Odenkirk seems unsure of himself. "So what is yer plan, should we dock?" he inquires.

Nadine sees the savage bugbears on the shore and snorts. "This will be a pissing match if ever there was one. Perhaps the need for something more intimidating, gentlemen. The circlets will allow you to look more heavily armored and even taller and more threatening, if you need. For me, though perhaps something simply more foreboding." She turns to hide the exact change from the bugbears, but when she turns back, she is adorned all in black with a dress with speaks both of dark power and regal authority.

"Now, Captain. Let's meet our hosts."

"My appearance will not be the intimidating presence. But you are correct, I grow weary of this guise."

Robert shifts his clothes to effect a simple, but fantastically well made nobility-level traveling outfit. All in black, with subtle red accents at the cuffs and hem.

"I hope they understand common, or infernal. I have not yet mastered the goblin tongue."

While both Vank and Nadine do their best it is simply not enough and the creature makes its way into the night leaving all of you behind.

Stanislav also takes his AOO, but likely fails to connect. Damn fast that thing. Good that we drove it away. What was it anyway?

Stanislav adapts his features to conceal any outward signs of being sickened from the daylight. His dress is also of black and he adds gothic touches to his clothing and armor. Offering his arm to Nadine he suggests We shall be lord and lady to these creatures.

Nadine takes Stanislav's arm, smiling at the pale, handsome man. "Oh, how wonderful, Captain. Or should I say, my lord." She curtsies in her dress and then looks up to the approaching bugbears. A vicious smile crosses her lips. "Shall we play with them, then?"

Weary Odenkrik orders his men to dock. They bring the Frosthammer next to make-shift pier and having secured the ship port side awaits your move. The four bugbears are more forward and moves closer to your ship fast.

Your move.

Oh yes my dear. Stanislav responds to his lady.

Smiling confidently and wickedly, holding his glaive-guisarme lightly with the Lady Nadine's hand resting on his arm Stanislav nods. Do so. He then moves to block access to the ship so that to board they bugbears would have to move over them. He glares at the approaching soldiers with malice. You shall not board this vessel until we have spoken with your leader. he barks his words with authority as an order.

Vank steps up and shouts in Goblin "Бид холбоотнууд нь, доош нь зогс, харин та нар үхэх гэж байгаа бол би туслах болно!"

Translation:
Stand down, we are allies, but if you wish to die I can help!

The bugbears halt the advance as Stanislav speaks, there seems to be some sort of understanding, this however does not include following Nadine's request. When Vank speaks in their native tongue, a discussion breaks out in Goblin.

Goblin:

Do you think they are right?
Nah, lets eat them.
But the little one with the weird spear seems sure of himself.
He is squishy.
Then you take him.
...

As their internal squabble continues everything is brought to a stop when a great black-furred bugbear separates the ranks of the onlookers. This fearsome beast points his flaming axe at Stanislav and Nadine and demands to know in unaccented common: "Who sent you?"

You must be Sakkarot Fire-Axe. I am pleased to meet you great one. We have been sent by Cardinal Thorn himself and as promised bring arms for your army. Stanislav does not bow but greats the chief as an equal. I am Captain Greymist and this lovely creature is the Lady Nadine Laveau. We have come a long way to deliver this cargo to you.

Female Human Gravewalker Witch 4 (HP: 28/21 | F+1, R+2, W+4 | AC 10/10/10 | Init: +2; Per: +1, SM: +1)

Nadine gives a small nod to the bugbear after Stanislav introduces her. "Chieftain Fire-Axe. May I introduce our companions, Vank Stormfirst and Robert Finlay, mighty warriors and powerful champions for Asmodeus."

"The Cardinal sends Asmodeus' blessings, as well as these gifts. He has sent us to help guide you on your path of glory." She smiles and raises her free hand. Suddenly four balls of light appear and circle around, slowly rising until they are above them, illuminating the immediate area.

"And it shall be glorious!"

The black bugbears demeanour changes and he flashes a toothy grin. "Then you are welcome here," he says. This is followed by him turning to his horde and proclaiming: "These humans are my guest. I will deal with anyone who harms them. They are our allies!"

He walks to the Frosthammer and board the vessel, slinging the canvas aside and tearing one of the crates open, he produces a finely made axe. He tosses this to one of the nearby bugbears. "Behold they bring us steel!" he bellows. His answers is a terrifying chorus of cheers and growls.

The Frosthammer is quickly unloaded and the weapon distributed. Seeing the now armed horde is a awe inspiring site before where they only a crude, ragtag, poorly armed mob, now they wield steel weapons and are protected by iron shield bearing the flaming axe of Sakkarot. Well most are.

The bugbear chieftain is displeased. "We are short on steel, have the cardinal weaved from his promise?" he inquires.

We swapped all our captured weapons and armour apart from the magic trident, I don't mind giving that if that is what other people want.

Speaking aside to the Bugbears that "greeted" them Vank says

Goblin:
"He is strong but not as strong as Stormfist clan. I'll be happy demonstrate my strength to you later. Now however I need to help move your presents so you could have a chance against me."

Female Human Gravewalker Witch 4 (HP: 28/21 | F+1, R+2, W+4 | AC 10/10/10 | Init: +2; Per: +1, SM: +1)

The Cardinal told us we were to help them breech the defenses of Balentyne by getting inside and opening the gates.

Nadine waves away the bugbear's concern. "Cheiftain, you will have more than enough weapons for your task. We are here to see to that. Allow us to do our work and we can get you inside the walls. Then your fearsome troops will need little more than your hands to tear apart the soft humans!"

"It'll have to do," Sakkarot grumbles not happy with the missing weapons. "It makes it more important that you hold up the other part of the cardinal's promise," he continues.

Goblin:

The bugbears are surprised to see Vank and here their native tongue spoken. "What is such a little one doing here?" One asks, while another bemuses: "Be careful we might teach you some respect."

While they might not fear you, they certainly have a healthy respect for Sakkarot and dutifully helps you unload the Frosthammer.

However weapons are weapons and Sakkarot is pleased with his now armed horde, his army. He orders a feast to be held in honour of the weapons and you the allies of the Fire-Axe.

It is a brutal thing this bugbear feast. Not only are there several fights among the bugbear and not all are friendly squabbles, in addition many of the monsters you saw earlier attends from the small goblins to the large polar bears and a giant. The highlight of the party is when a shaggy dire boar recently captured are brought forth in shackles. From your place at the high table next to Sakkarot himself all your sense capture this one ton of angry pig as a dozen bugbears drags it before their lord. He beheads it with a single mighty stroke of his fire axe. A roar of approval rises from the audience and goblins pile in to prepare the beast for consumption.

Vank will sit and enjoy the the feast for a little but pays little attention to what is happening close by and is instead watching for other hobgoblins and the fights. Once he has eaten his fill he will turn to the others standing "Please excuse me, I have a few duties to my clan to see to."

Stanislav, a dark lord, sits at table with his lady looking intimidating and cold. He eats and drinks little and tries to take some enjoyment from the feast. He keeps his weapons close. As the sun sets he begins to feel more "alive". He will eat more, choosing the bloodiest portions of the boar for his cut. He smiles more and participates more in any festivities. Do what you must do Vank. He tells the hobgoblin. But do nothing that interferes with our mission.

Female Human Gravewalker Witch 4 (HP: 28/21 | F+1, R+2, W+4 | AC 10/10/10 | Init: +2; Per: +1, SM: +1)

Nadine sits next to Stanislav, eating the only real way sheknows how, quite properly and with full etiquette. It makes for an almost comical dichotomy with the savage bugbears, as she cuts the boar meat delicately with her knife and takes small bites.

After a great deal of ale and boar has been consumed Sakkarot turns to you, "I trust you have satisfied your apatite? Come now we must speak in private."

Following Sakkarot you see that the cruelty of the bugbears are not quelled by food and drink as many are either asserting themselves over other bugbears or goblins. A deep growl from Sakkarot clear your path to his private quarters, here two joined rather large tents. He finds himself a field chair and gestures towards a few others. genuinely interested he asks: "You are traitors to your own kind. You must know, that when Balentyne falls and my horde pours through its shattered gates, we will slaughter the Talireans by the thousands. Yet I see no regret in your eyes. Tell me how can this be?"

Vank, any special plans you need to complete before we proceed?

"Our kind saw fit to brand, beat, and imprison us for simple misunderstandings. Stanislav leans forward, dropping Nadine's hand for a moment. He speaks with passion. I once served my kind and they branded me and sent me to be executed. So I have little remorse for what you might do once through the gates. Sometimes betrayal is necessary great Sakkarot. One order must be destroyed for a new order to rise up. You may not know it but we all we all act as part of a great plan dictated to us by Cardinal Thorn. But the plan itself comes from our lord Asmodeus. If your part of the plan enriches you and sates your people's blood lust, that is fine with me. And the terror it brings will weaken the Mitran leadership further and faster.

Female Human Gravewalker Witch 4 (HP: 28/21 | F+1, R+2, W+4 | AC 10/10/10 | Init: +2; Per: +1, SM: +1)

"Oh yes, our kind. I gave everything to my kind, my husband. And what did I get in return? They took my little boy away from me! Ripped him from my arms and destroyed him!" Anger rises in her voice. "My Robbie was a special, bright boy and they ended him far before his time was due! And now I will have my revenge on them, Bugbear! Asmodeous has promised me revenge and if you don't help me with it, I will find someone who will."

Sakkarot smiles, "I know these feelings you speak of. I am no more at home among my kind than you are among yours. When the time comes I believe we will take the same actions towards them." Finishing his statement he to leans a litte forward and pulls his breast-plate aside revealing the upper part of his chest and a symbol of Asmodeus burned into his chest. "We all have our scars," he remarks.

Nadine smiles. "Indeed, Sakkarot. Ah, what a nice surprise to meet such a devoted bugbear." She leans back in her chair. "Now, what do you have planned for your army here? Or shall we retire for theevening and discuss plans tomorrow?"

The great black menace smiles coldly at Nadine's words "As devoted as you my small friends." he says continuing: "Over the next week, more tribes will rally to my banner. I will promise them blood and give them steel. Then at last I will be ready to march. A week after that – I will be poised to strike. I will move my horde to the valley just north of Balentyne. There we will wait for your signal. Fire this rocket into the air. Within the hour, we will attack. Make sure that the way is ready."

Work is back to manageable. Sorry for my absence. Luckly Vank didn't have much to add to that conversation and the chief's reply would have disturbed him, probably better that he wasn't there.

While the others have meeting with chief Vank goes among the troops searching for one of the bugbears that met and insulted them at the dock. Nadine's eyes widen at the thought of being accosted by some brutish bugbear, but then she smiles and turns to give the Captain a smoldering look. "And who would protect me, Captain? Would you be willing to stay with me to see to my safety?"

"You seem to be far more energetic in the evening."

While the rest of you peacefully concludes your parley with Sakkarot, vank is somewhat more violently engaged. The bugbear looks in disdain at the smaller opponent before him and growls: "You brought the steel, now you can die by it." Infuriated the monstrosity set upon Vank, who is ready and eagerly awaiting this fight. It is not as decisive as both parties could have wished for but in the end Vank stand victoriously over the corpse of the offender.

I would stay with you Lady Nadine, and you would would be safe, from all but me. His dark eyes flash his meaning and he leads Nadine back to his tent.

In the morning Stanislav is up early hexing with the preparations and is happy to put this port behind the team. No problem Stanislav, you just left in the morning, so perhaps and hour or two later there are many hours left.

On another note this is Day 1 in the total count Sakkarot gave you.

I take it everyone is agreeing to wait.
As night comes so does the anticipated darkness, under the weak light of the new moon Odenkirk masterfully takes the string oar himself and guides the Frosthammer the last stretch to the south eastern shore of Lake Tarik just half an hours walk south of Watchtower Balentyne and the village of Aldencross. Satisfied as the ship reach a soft stop close to the shore Odenkirk say: "Now your business is concluded, leave!"

Of course Stanislav is content to wait to when he is not sickened. :)

Nodding to the others Stanislav stands and shoulders his backpack and picking up his pole arm. Why captain, you have made good coin from this voyage. I am not sure you are showing proper gratitude for our business. I had so hoped we would part as comrades if not friends.

Resting his hand on a finely crafted great axe beside him Odenkirk confidently retorts: "We were never friends, now get your feet wet, I have other business." A small gesture from Odenkrik rouses the men and they slowly move to their weapons.

In the early morning, Nadine is seen exiting Stanislav's tent. Her hair is the dirty gray again and her clothes decidedly rumpled, but she has a quirky grin on her face. She's halfway to her own tent before she realizes the circlet isn't on. She pulls it from her belt and settles it on her head. Instantly, a milky-skinned redhead in a golden gown is standing where she was and she strides confidently toward her tent with a slow roll of her hips at each pace.

Nadine stands on the ship as it drifts towards the shore. She's in the image of a short blonde woman with pigtail braids and stout traveling clothes. When Stanislav stands, she does so too, gripping her bag in one hand. "Come now Robbie, it's time for us to get back to steady land."

She looks over the side of the boat at the inches of water and huffs. "Captain, you expect me to splash into the water like a fool? Please. Have your men lower a ramp." She looks up to see the crew moving towards weapons and sighs. "And now your men betray us?"
