Filios takes several minutes to examine the lock more closely, and eventually manages to disengage the mechanism. As Noran opens the door, you can see a portion of the western wing. A black stone altar sits near the northwest wall, and the crumbling remains of wooden benches sag in front of the altar. You can make out carved symbols and writings along the walls. You hear no noise and see no movement.
Noran Kekmore |
K(religion) (untrained): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Not recognizing anything, Noran mutters, [b]"spooky..." under his breath. He takes a step into the room to get a better look around, bow at the ready, confident in the team at his back.

"Certainly flaunting the line in the sand here, eh? Someone, help be overturn this black monstrosity, until it can be properly cleansed of whatever evil these creatures invest into it."
I'll, again keep following, and renew my Light.
GM Sean |
We'll back up just a little...
As you enter the room, you notice that it's a bit different from those on the previous floors. A second altar, this one white, lies at the other end of the large chamber that takes up two wings of the tower. Rotting tapestries decorate the ceiling, and you notice the burnt corpses of two troglodytes near the center of the room.
Filios, Quartes, and Jareth can still make Knowledge (religion) checks.
Jareth Grimald |
Know(Religion) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
These writings are straight from the lore of the God of Magic. Nethys is said to have gone quite mad, the splintering of his mind made one side of him wants to destroy everything in existence, while the other is set to save it.
I'd wager these two altars are meant to symbolize that.
[i] Jareth eyeing around the room notices the two corpses, keeping his shield and weapon at the ready, he slowly enters the room, keeping close to his allies and keeps on the lookout for anything suspicious.[/]
Perception While taking full advantage of his Darkvision :p ) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Quartes |
Quartes follows the others in, nodding to Noran as the dwarf sets up position. He walks to the white altar, noticing the note, and leans over it, inspecting the language, and reading it if he's able. He's careful not to actually touch the altar unless he needs to.

Filios walks closer to the altars to examine the contents and revisit his search for traps in the event any items are taken or moved.

Beckett of the Bleeding Rose |
So, is this correct: We walk up the stairs into the new room, and there are two alters. One is Black and the other is White, both dedicated to Nethys with silver holy/Unholy symbols, and each has a still smoldering corpse of a dead Trog in front of it.
Is there any other noticable exits from the room(s)?
I'll go ahead and Detect Magic on the room and renew Light
GM Sean |
That's correct for the most part... I wouldn't call them unholy symbols. Nethys is a pretty mainstream deity. The corpses are towards the middle of the room between the western and southern wings. There aren't any other exits from the room.

Hectic day at work... fixing all sorts of other people's stuff. I'll move things along when I get home later tonight.
GM Sean |
Ok... sorry for the wait!
As the group enters and examines the room, you begin to hear a faint whispering sound. As the unintelligible words grow louder, they seem to come from everywhere at once. Suddenly, in a flash of light two masses of bones burst into existence and fly together to form two skeletons wreathed in auras of flame, their mouths open in silent screams as they advance toward you, their dilapidated chain armor nearly falling from them. They wield rusty, cracked scimitars, and you can feel the heat they exude even from a distance.

I'll handle removing the skeletons from the map for this combat.
Beckett's up first. Anyone trained in Knowledge (religion) can make the check at any time and say something quick as a free action.

Initiative
Beckett - 22
Skeletons - 15 <--
Filios - 12
Quartes - 9
Noran - 4
Jareth - 3
The skeletons reel back from the wave of positive energy, but then continue their advance towards the intruders.
Scimitar 1d20 ⇒ 7
One moves to Quartes, swinging his scimitar at the magus with an arc of flame. Its attack falls short, the scimitar hitting the floor with a clang.
Scimitar 1d20 ⇒ 8
The other advances towards Jareth and attacks, but Jareth easily avoids the swing.
However, the intense heat radiating from the undead creatures is overwhelming, seemingly searing you from the inside! Quartes & Jareth: You take fire damage at the start of your next turn if the skeleton next to you hasn't been destroyed by then. Quartes: 1d6 ⇒ 5; Jareth: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Filios Philandril |
Round 1, Init: AC: 17, HP: 10/10
Filios circles around to the square directly south of Quartes to attack Skeleton 2.
Someone be so kind as to move me - I cannot do it from office. Thanks!

Quartes |
Quartes blinks away the heat from the skeleton, cursing his own foolishness for getting away from the group proper. His actions are lent a sense of desperation due to his discomfort from the heat. He utilizes the fighting style he had learned long ago, combining his attack with the use of his magics.
Use 1 point from arcane pool to enchant weapon as swift action (overcomes DR.) Cast true strike with off hand, and attack with main hand; included a concentration check in case the heat applies as ongoing damage

They can be critted (and sneak attacked). Yay, Pathfinder!
As Filios brings his curve blade through the skeleton, it explodes in a burst of flame!
Reflex saves:
Filios: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Quartes: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Fiery Death 1d6 ⇒ 4
Filios and Quartes dive out of the way avoiding the brunt of the explosion, but the flames still manage to singe them. 2 fire damage to Filios and Quartes!
Skeleton 1 - HP 3/5; AC 16, T 12; Fort +1, Ref +2, Will +2
Quartes |
Quartes winces at his singed flesh, then nods in thanks to Filios before turning from the now really dead undead corpse. He rushes to the remaining skeleton and takes position across from Jareth, then slashes with his dueling sword.
Move to flank skeleton, swift action to enchant weapon, attack!
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
GM Sean |
Noran's first arrow hits the skeleton, shattering several of its rib bones. His second, however, just nicks one of the skeleton's femurs and bounces off without effect.
Skeleton 1 - HP 2/5; AC 16, T 12; Fort +1, Ref +2, Will +2
Since the skeleton is still 'alive', Jareth's up next and takes 2 fire damage (from above).

Taking advantage of Quartes' flank, Jareth drops his scimitar, and in one single arc, Jareth draws his Light Mace and brings it towards the Skeleton!

Reflex saves:
Jareth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Quartes: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Fiery Death 1d6 ⇒ 6
Jareth's mace slams into the skeleton's skull which shatters under the full force of the bludgeoning damage! With another burst of flame, the skeleton explodes, bone fragments flying through the room. Quartes again manages to dive out of the way, but Jareth is too caught up in apparent victory and is enveloped in the fire. (6 fire damage to Jareth, 3 to Quartes)
The room is once again still, though for once not everyone escaped unscathed. (I have Quartes at 4/11, Filios at 8/10 (with 3 nonlethal), and Jareth at 4/12.)
Quartes |
Gah! Quartes curls up with a groan, to no avail, as his skin is sliced through by bone fragments and singed by fire. A bloody and smoking mess, he stands...very slowly, and with a deep groan. He doesn't even make an attempt to stand all of the way up, but hunches over his knees. He manages to look up at Beckett. So...any of that healing available, noble priest?
Beckett of the Bleeding Rose |
"Yes, gather around, and hear the whispering song of freedoms call. Let us join hands, and pray. Noble and just Milani. Look into these noble warrior's hearts, and heal the wounds of one to many battle faught in your name. Let not their morale fall, let not their hearts be made bitter or become hardened against the hidden goodnesses still in the world. Guide our souls, so that we may come out of this, and see the true hope that you promise awaits all the faithful. Grant us the will to continue the fight against evil and tyrrany, renewing our spirits so that one day, perfect brotherhood might be achieved.
There, do you feel better? "
:)
GM Sean |
The burnt remains of the troglodytes hold nothing of value. It looks like they fell victim to the attacks of the skeletons.
Like the black altar, the white altar also has silver altar services and a silver holy symbol of Nethys. As you get closer, you can see that the paper on the stone holds magical writings of some sort.
Noran can also see that the black altar has a spell scroll on it.
