Diego turns to Shaeda with an absent grin as she calls for a spirited tune. You see, it's one thing to tell tales of battles on ship--of the hazy smoke in the air, the metallic scent of blood and panic, and the surge of adrenaline that pushes you to act like animals for the sake of your own preservation. For a moment, he's caught in reverie as if watching the stories unfold.

But now that spark returns, with an eyebrow raise accompanied by a lifting smirk. "A tale with heart, indeed!" He shouts to their current command. "Let me tell you of John-Silver."

We were schooner-rigged and rakish,
with a long and lissome hull,
And we flew the pretty colours of the crossbones and the skull;
We'd a big black Jolly Roger flapping grimly at the fore,
And we sailed the Spanish Water in the happy days of yore.

We'd a long brass gun amidships, like a well-conducted ship,
We had each a brace of pistols and a cutlass at the hip;
It's a point which tells against us, and a fact to be deplored,
But we chased the goodly merchant-men and laid their ships aboard.

Then the dead men fouled the scuppers and the wounded filled the chains,
And the paint-work all was spatter dashed with other peoples brains,
She was boarded, she was looted, she was scuttled till she sank.

And the pale survivors left us by the medium of the plank.

O! then it was (while standing by the taffrail on the poop)
We could hear the drowning folk lament the absent chicken coop;
Then, having washed the blood away, we'd little else to do
Than to dance a quiet hornpipe as the old salts taught us to.

O! the fiddle on the fo'c'sle, and the slapping naked soles,
And the genial "Down the middle, Jake, and curtsey when she rolls!"
With the silver seas around us and the pale moon overhead,
And the look-out not a-looking and his pipe-bowl glowing red.

Ah! the pig-tailed, quidding pirates and the pretty pranks we played,
All have since been put a stop to by the naughty Board of Trade;
The schooners and the merry crews are laid away to rest,
A little south the sunset in the islands of the Blest.

His voice rings out above the boarding clash, solid and rousing. Spurred by his own tale of bravado, he rushes up the stairs to the wheel as well, opposite of Alessandra.

Bardic Performance: Inspire Courage. +1 to you all on weapon attack and damage, as well as +1 on saves against charm or fear.

ROUND 6

Rogar steps forward and throws a ball of,… something at the sailors still around the cannons. The projectile impacts and bursts covering a wide area with foul-smelling goop. Sailor 5 is stuck fast to his cannon by the sticky mess (glued), whilst both of the others seem to be struggling against its clinging tendrils (entangled), one (#4) seems particularly affected by the noxious substance whilst the other (#6) seems to have avoided the worst of it. Shaeda shouts out as she scampers around the stairs behind the second sailor as Alessandra closes in from the front. Stabbing at the Sailor, the half-orc manages to find his chest with her blade, causing a bright shower of blood to coat her arms. Despite the gaping wound he somehow manages to stay upright and tries desperately to strike back at his assailant. Somehow his desperate strike lands, but the weak blow does little against the half-orc (2 Dam).

Sailor #3 moves down the stairs to B6 and slashes at Shaeda, joined by #4 who steps forward onto the stairs (B7) themselves and likewise attacks the halfling. The agile halting, however, manages to dodge easily away from both strikes. Meanwhile, the sailor next to Diego (#6) stabs forward at the bard. Somehow, despite being restricted by the noxious glue of Doc's projectile, the sailor's short sword finds its target, drawing a nasty wound across Diego's flank [ooc] (6 Dam).

As the Sailor (#3) moves past Shaeda to flank her, the spry halfling manages to slash him with her sword, she turns easily and slashes at the already wounded sailor between Alessandra and herself, dropping the sailor immediately to the ground, dead. Through the fog blanketing the rest of the ship's deck, cries of pain and suddenly chocked-off screams provide evidence that the fight for the rest of the ship continues unabated...

Alessandra, as Diego moves out of Doc’s way, steps forward and slashes forward with her two blades. Although one swings wide, the other slashes across the sailor’s neck, raising a plume of crimson as the sailor drops to the ship’s deck, dead. Almost immediately Doc launches another lump of filth at the two sailors on the raised deck. The missile impacts against its target and his shipmate is caught in the explosion of sticky gunk, unable to avoid any of its effects. Both sailors choke on the oily, smelly substance and, coughing their last, slump in death, morbidly held to the ships rail by strands of stinking ichor.

Looking around, the only remaining sailor frantically yells out for help as he slashes at Shaeda with his shortsword. In his desperation, however, his strike misses the Halfling. Meanwhile, through the fog blanketing the rest of the ship, eerie shadows of combat shift and move. A light breeze shifts a little of the fog, revealing a Rahadoumi sailor cowering near the ship’s rail, next to the body of one of her shipmates. Jape and Fipps suddenly emerge from the cloud and hurl the poor woman overboard into the shark infested waters , laughing as the fog once again closes, obscuring the rest of the boat.

Diego lets the end of his whip drop to the planks at his feet, still grasping the handle, and lets his lingering song begin to fade over the din of the continuing battle. It's a good tale he'd love to finish, but would rather save his voice as the salt air is less than forgiving.

Quickly clearing his throat, the bard then roars across the deck. It's an unusual thing to hear a man genuinely roar, but the command that this one has over his vocal chords allows him to do so with a ferocity that's actually somewhat intimidating---but also with a focus that centers that rumbling wave on one man in particular, hiding in the rigging.

Diego can see the thick ropes swinging from the force of the shout all around the Rhahadoumi sailor, filling his mind with all sorts of fears at this situation he's gotten himself into.

ROUND 8 (cont.)

Alessandra's dagger streaks forward and takes the Sailor in the throat leaving an impressive wound that showers blood over the Captain standing below. The sailor, himself, is dead before he hits the deck. Pausing only to run a wounded sailor on the deck through with his sword, the captain turns, his steely gaze meeting Alessandra's and he gives a small nod of recognition before the fog once again swirls about, obscuring your view of the rest of the ship.

ROUNDS 9/10

As the noise of battle seems to be moving mostly below-decks, the fog swirls and you wait, guarding the wheel and aft-deck from any attackers,... although all that emerges from the fog are the wailing cries of the wounded. That is, until, the noise of a mighty explosion from somewhere below shakes the whole ship, accompanied by the sound of splintering wood as the mainmast crashes down.

ROUNDS 11

Moments later, three sailors and an officer, adorned in a long silk blue coat stained with blood emerge from the mist with their swords drawn. Seeing you, they pause in their flight and the officer yells, pointing at the boat being guarded by Rogar: "Take the boat! The Promise's lost!"

MAP Sailors are 1, 2 & 3,.. Officer is "O"

PEGLEGS and EYEPATCHES:

So, this seems like a good opportunity to introduce my take on the "Peg-legs and Eye-patches" rules.

Essentially, very easy...... If you (or your enemy) roll a natural 20 to confirm, the target must take a DC15 (+1/2 additional damage rolled) fort save, or be reduced to -1 hit points and gain a permanent debilitating scar or handicap. These effects are randomly determined by rolling 1d20 on the table below.

d20 Battle Scar or Amputation

1-5 Minor scar—interesting but otherwise cosmetic
6-8 Moderate scar—cut on face (+1 bonus on Charisma-based skill checks for first scar only, consider subsequent cuts as a major scar)
9-10 Major scar—severe cut on face (-1 penalty on Charisma-based skill checks**)
11-14 Loss of finger (for every 3 fingers lost, -1 Dex)
15-16 Impressive wound (-1 Con)
17 Loss of eye (-4 penalty on all sight-based Perception checks)
18 Loss of leg (speed reduced to half, cannot charge)
19 Loss of hand (cannot use two-handed items*)
20 Loss of arm (-1 Str, cannot use two-handed items*)

There are protheses etc. to overcome these wounds available..

scatter, 1is the square above: 1d8 ⇒ 3
so it would land in D2

Sorry for the delay everyone,... Lizard collection should be slowing down for a few weeks, so hopefully my posting rate will improve. Thanks for your patience!

As he moves forward, Diego once takes up his song whilst Shaeda steps forward to attack the Rahadoumi officer with her rapier, wickedly wounding the woman and causing a red stain to blossom on her white linen shirt. Alessandra steps up next to her small companion and delightedly stabs at the officer with her short swords, however, neither of the blows lands. Doc, seeing the Rahadoumis clumped together, hurls another package at them, however, this time, his aim is off, and the foul-smelling goop lands next to Shaeda, exploding in a tangle of mucous-like fibres. Both the sailor caught in the vile stuff (Sailor 3) and the Officer manage to avoid becoming entangled, however, both are hurt by the searing substance which also engulfs Shaeda.....

Shaeda: Ref (DC13) or entangled and 3 damage (Ref 13 save for 1/2) - I think this is right Doc?

ROUND 12

Managing to avoid becoming entangled by Doc's foul bomb, the officer slashes at Shaeda with her sword and drawing blood (4 Damage)

Round 13

Also, you guys definitely get the impression that these guys are not exactly what they seem. Their discipline seems lax, and their uniforms appear dirty, damaged, and bloodied.

Alessandra frowns as she notes some of the details her earlier bloodlust prevented her from seeing. Something isn't quite right, but now isn't the time to worry about it.

Swinging her two swords around, she does her best to end this.

His friends already in melee with the remaining enemy, and his bombs having a history of not going where he intends, Rogar decides the bombs are not the best approach now. Instead, he raises his crossbow and moves to find the best line of fire and unleashes the bolt towards the sailor.

If possible, move to a position where the enemy doesn't have cover. If not possible, use move action to reload after shooting.

Crossbow attack, Bard, Bane, PBS, Firing into melee: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 19
Damage, Bard, Bane, PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 1 + 1 = 11

Rogar finishes off the final sailor attempting to escape with his crossbow.

Shaeda rallies her little group to continue defending the boats from escaping sailors.

Shortly after the last attempt at escaping through your area is thwarted, you hear a cheering up and down both ships. Glancing around you see the victorious members of the Wormwood's crew cheering as the surviving members of the crew of the Man's Promise lay down their arms in defeat.

Groups of pirates start rounding up the survivors, including several prisoners in the hold, as well as gathering up the booty from the newly captured ship. It turns out the Man's Promise was carrying a good deal of fine food and drink, and the pirates cannot help but start a frenzied party atmosphere that lasts for 36 hours.

During that time, Alessandra and Doc, you guys can each take 5 ship actions. That is diplomacize 5 times, search 5 times, etc. With the usual chances of being discovered or caught, so just let me know what you're doing and roll the bones!

On the morning of the second day following the capture of the Man's Promise Captain Harrigan has the entire crew called out on deck. There is a pile of booty and treasure laid out on deck, in addition to roughly twenty captured persons from the Man's Promise.

Captain Harrigan holds out his hand to halt the crew's cheers. "All right you scurvy tars! You've done a right good job by me - we've got a second ship now, and she's quite a prize from the looks of her, but I still only have one crew."

He scans around the crew and he draws a bead on Doc, Alessandra, Diego, and Shaeda. "You lot there, you may be new to the crew, but you did yer assigned jobs and ye did them well, and Barnabas Harrigan rewards success. He points at Doc, "be careful that ye don't be burning me ships to the ground, but those missiles you toss were very effective today," and he hands Doc an amulet. He motions to Alessandra, "this gutter rat here saved my life during the fighting," he pulls a short sword from his belt and hands it to her. Finally, he goes to the pile of loot, and grabs out a couple bags of gold and tosses them at Shaeda's feet, followed by a pack from his shoulders. "Now distribute that to your folks, and don't be skimping them."

He makes several more callouts for bravery and actions that were carried out during the recent fight.

"As for these fine fellows here,” Harrigan gestures at the remainder of the captured ship’s crew, "some of them will no doubt be worth a hefty ransom from their families back in Azir. And for the rest, if the life of a pirate’s not for them, they can spend the rest of their lives at sea!” To make his point, Harrigan grabs one of the Rahadoumi sailors and throws her overboard to the accompaniment of cheers and laughter from the Wormwood’s crew. As the unfortunate woman sinks beneath the waves, many of the remaining sailors scramble to swear their loyalty to Harrigan.

"So here’s the plan—the Wormwood will sail on to our planned destination with our new shipmates here, while Mr. Plugg will pick a skeleton crew to sail the Man’s Promise to Port Peril, where she’ll be worth a pretty penny as salvage."

I’ll wait to have Mr. Plugg pick his crew out until we’ve gotten the reading on what the 5 actions from Doc and Alessandra are.

Doc, that’s an amulet of natural armor +1. Alessandra, that’s a short sword +1

There’s enough gold for Doc and Alessandra to each get 300gp. You can spend this at the ship’s store now if you want. As you guys have befriended Cut-Throat Grok, she will offer you a gift of 100gp of gear from the store as well. The extra bag that Harrigan gave you contains 3 potions of cure moderate wounds and 1 potion of invisibility.

Ok, so get me those 5 ship actions each, and what do you want from the store, and then we can get you guys off as the prize crew, and get the new party together.

Yay, loot!

Alessandra grins wolfishly in the aftermath of combat, and quickly checks that the few people she cares about are still standing. Her own wound is superficial, and in fact she enjoys the celebrations that bit more for having acquired a few marks. The post-combat thrill mixes with the alcohol and she feels well-disposed towards the world - well, most of it. She keeps a wide berth from Plugg and Scourge, but uses the time to make one final attempt to win the undecideds over to the right side - starting with the fop Conchobar. Praising his courage and his dress sense, she points out some choice pieces of loot that Plugg or Scourge have kept for themselves and suggests that the gnome would look better with it. "Face it sweetie," she slurs, refilling his grog cup, "you don't get this sort of service from them, do you?"

Diplomacy, Conchobar: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

The teenager also does her best to ensure that Grok and Ambrose are plied with good quality rum and anything else plundered from the ship.

Diplomacy, Grok: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Diplomacy, Ambrose: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

She also makes a point of visiting the giant, Owlbear: she's not sure what happened with their fight, but it marked some sort of epiphany for her - a new direction. She feels some, badly-defined, sense of duty to him and tries to see that he gets some of the food and drink.

Diplomacy, Owlbear: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Finally, all of this do-gooding gets too much for her and she kicks over the traces by exploring the new ship.

Perception (sneak action, Take 20: 20 + 5 = 25

She does her best not to get caught.

Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

When Harrigan throws her the sword, she captures it, triumphantly. With any luck, I'll get to use this on you, sooner or later... Oh well. A girl can dream.

With her newly acquired gold, she pays a visit to Grok. "Hey, there - whatcha got by way of longbows? Mine's nice, but a girl needs something she can pull on without worrying it'll shatter in her grip, ya know?" Alessandra doesn't do innuendo as a rule (growing up around a whorehouse will do that to you), but she thinks Grok might appreciate the earthy humour.

Looking for a composite (+2 Str) longbow (300 gp) - will trade in existing longbow (37.5 gp) and old shortsword (5 gp) - with the 100 gp worth Grok is giving me, I'm spending 157.5 so I have 142.5 gp left.

She also picks up 2 more flasks of alchemist's fire, another quiver of 20 arrows, and a masterwork backpack (91 gp), and saves the rest for a rainy day.

51.5 gp remaining

No problem on the purchasing.

I'll get your diplomacy stuff handled when I'm back at a computer. I'll also work on getting my own pictures of the Man's Promise posted, but in the mean time, here she is
