Against all conventional wisdom my most successful campaign as a GM on these forums was an almost completely new group. Therefore for my new campaign I will go against conventional wisdom and recruit an entirely inexperienced party.

This campaign will be mostly set in Lastwall and Belkzen, though other neighbouring countries may be visited as well. Expect many battles against orcs and their allies.

You will start at Castle Firrine, newly added to the ranks of the army of lastwall. Disturbing rumours are spreading that a powerful orc warlord is attempting to unite tribes into an unstoppable horde of destruction.

I will select a party of 4-6 on March 1 and am more interested in interesting characters than OP killing machines.

character creation rules:

Core Rulebook only - no exceptions
1st level characters
Focus/ Foible stat generation -as explained below
Max starting wealth - lastwall is generous with supplies
HP after first level rolled

Include your key stats under your name in your alias. At a minimum I want to see AC (including touch and flat), Initiative, Saves, and Perception.

Focus/ Foible:

This method of stat generation is easy and I find makes for more interesting characters.
You pick one stat as a Focus that stat is an 18
You then pick one Foible that stat is an 8
Third you roll 1d10+7 4 times in order to generate your other stats.
Fourth you re-roll your 4 rolled stats if their total bonus is less than a +3.
Fifth you apply any racial mods to your stats.

So as an example if I am making a strength focused fighter
Focus Str 18
Dex 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Con1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Int1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Wis1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Foible Cha 8

I would then apply any racial stat mods.

I will be using the fast XP chart and also giving XP for important non-combat accomplishments.

I will do one main update a day around 6-7PM EST, normally I will be able to make smaller updates or answer questions several times a day.

I expect people to be able to post at least once per day (and at least once a weekend).

When you post please include your experience with play by post.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

First, I'd like to say that I'm not exactly unexperienced, though I did start less than 2 months ago.

Also, I'd like to apply to play a rogue, since I always wanted to try one, despite their less than optimal power. I'll probably be an archery based human.

Focus:Dexterity 18
Str 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Con 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Int 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Wis 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Foible: Charisma 8

As a whole, I imagine him being a specialist of sorts, fighting the orcs through more cunning and sabotage than brute force, since you don't fight the enemy on his turf. Also being the skill-monkey.

EDIT: Holy cow... I don't think being a rogue is going to be a problem...

I'll provide background and personality in a bit.

That is a crazy set of rolls. Honesty archery and rogues don't really go well together, pulling off ranged sneak attack is super hard and archery is really feat intensive but if you want go for it.

Sczarni

True... I could go for a sneaky-two handed weapon user then, considering that I can pull off the frontline combatant with that Con. A dirty fighter of sorts would be reasonable, fighting only when outnumbering the enemy.

Just as a question, are there any stealth units in the army of Lastwall? I can see my character applying for them.

I believe I'll be using a spear as my weapon, for it's versatility, it can be thrown or used two handed.

Your unit will be focused on scouting and small group (aka the party) operations. Gathering info about enemy movement, removing enemy scouts, looking for routes for larger forces, etc.

Scarab Sages

I'm interested. As with The Lion Cleric, I'm not entirely inexperienced, but I've had no long running campaigns. I also had a long break for training, and have come back looking for games to play. My schedule has very recently settled down for what looks to be quite a long time. (I'm in the military, so "stable" is relative, but I'm currently in as stable a place as I could possibly get.)

I'm a fan of the Lastwall setting and haven't gotten to play a martial character in a long time. So I'd like to present a not-so-disciplined soldier (i.e. barbarian) ready and eager to finally get to fight on the front against the orcs.

Focus: Strength 18
Dexterity: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Intelligence: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Foible: Charisma 8

What, the what?! Uh...I think the dice are broken?

Along with this, I'd like to note that I *completely* understand if I have too much pbp experience to qualify for this game. In either case, I'll write the character up and present him some time this evening. Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

I haven't tried play by post before, but have been playing for a couple of years. But I like to try it so i can be able to get some playing done in between society.

I like to play a half orc bard focus on social interactions and buffing the others

Focus: cha 18
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Int: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Con: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Foible Str 8

Gronk is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, who wants to help and make everyone like him as all have allways be mean to Gronk while he was growing up.
He joined the army in hope of being more respected, but he is more of a performer then soldier and instead got charged with keeping the morale high during campaigns or just a happy song in the local tarven.

I am very interest but need to figure out what I will play before the roll so dot for interest.

PBP experience - I am currently in my first and only campaign a PFS one and am enjoying it very much. can definitely post at least once a day and once on weekends may be even more if needed.

Okay think I want to play a Zen Archer or plain monk if Zen Archer isn't considered Core.

Wisdom 18
Charisma 8

STR: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
DEX: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
CON: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
INT: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

STR: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
DEX: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
CON: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
INT: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

+1 Reroll LOL

STR: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
DEX: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
CON: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
INT: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Really +1 Reroll

STR: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
DEX: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
CON: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
INT: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Okay finally. Will work up the character

I'm definitely interested. My PbP experience is the current Emerald Spire Level 1 I'm in with a different character. This character is originally for a Giantslayer campaign I applied for and didn't get into. The backstory takes place mostly in Lastwall so it's viable to your location minus the trip to Trunau. With a few tweaks he'll be ready to go.

Stats:
Focus: Dexterity 18
STR: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
CON: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
INT: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
WIS: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Foible: Charisma 8

I believe this falls under your reroll rules.

Stats (Take 2)
Focus: Dexterity 18
STR: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
CON: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
INT: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
WIS: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Foible: Charisma 8

WOW! That's quite a bit better.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the read.

In the rather unlikely chance you needed it/me, I will roll for a Paladin Face.

Focus: Charisma
STR:: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
CON:: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
INT:: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
WIS:: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Fpible: Dexterity 8

EDIT: Oh right, I am fairly experienced with PbP.

Since there are questions I will clarify what I mean by core only. Core only means that the only book that matters for making your character is the core rulebook, if it isn't in that book it might as well not exist. That means among other things no archetypes or traits.

Also when people are putting an alias together please include the type of information a bestiary entry has. So things like skills, feats, spells, special abilities. That way if I need to check something or bot you all the info is in your profile.

So just to be clear, that is a no to the god specific Paladin codes? They just seem to straddle the line between fluff and crunch.

Nohwear wrote:

You can use it as inspiration for how your character should act, but it would have no mechanical effect.

Here is my entry for a human cleric. The concept is a combat medic for the party.

Focus Wisdom 18

Str: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Foible Int 8

Let me know if you need anything else.

FYI: ... I played a PbP for Star Trek about 15 years ago.

Hello everybody. I'm an experienced PBP character and therefore will not be applying, but I did want to drop in and say that I think it's an excellent idea to have this kind of recruitment. It gives a different experience and really helps new players on the boards. Basically, I'm saying good on you for doing this, and best of luck with your game!

Well, as ive made my account today i guess i'd count as pretty new.

i haven't played any pathfinder before but i have dabbled in 3.5

Introducing Castor. Castor is a man of many talents, trained both on the streets and formally. He is a rather too jovial a figure for a man who has a plan to kill everyone he meets (Think Pratchett's Assassin's guild). Has a grim sense of humor and isn't afraid to use it. The reason he's "volunteering" in Lastwall's Militia is because of some disagreements regarding his previous occupation in Geb.

I will say this one last time. Core rulebook only. There are no traits or drawbacks in the core rulebook.

Hey all,

I'm a newbie as they get, tried to play once online but didn't get very far, had to remember how to generate dice rolls online.

I have never played a cleric before, so I want to give it a try:

Str: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Con: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Int: Foilable- 8
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Cha: Focus- 18

Now I have figured how to roll dice, I need to find an online core rule book to flush out the rest #gettingbackintod20

Edit: That's a pretty miserable cleric, against conventional wisdom I will push my luck even though it's a +3 and try again:

Str: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Con: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Int: Foilable- 8
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Cha: Focus- 18

Edit- other people stole all the good rolls =(

I think the dice gods don't want me representing them, to be honest I don't want my re-vamping pbp to be playing an average, mediocre character alongside the wizardry of people above me. I think I'll take a pass.

Will put him together now :)

I havent done a lot of PbP on paizo boards so i'd love to join to get a feel for it. Lets see how it goes

Focus STR 18
Dex 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Con 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Int Foible 8
Wis 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Cha 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Scarab Sages

I think you've got plenty of interested from players with much less experience than I, so I'll back out in favor of them. I hope your game is really successful! It's built on an interesting idea and one that I hope this game encourages in others!

I'd like to apply. Currently I am involved in my first PbP with DM Grimmy set in the FGG campaign world. While being new to PbP I've played Pathfinder in many games and have a good familiarity with the rules.

I'll be going for a half orc ranger focusing on two weapon fighting.

Focus: Dex 18
Str: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Con: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Int: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Foible: Chr 8

This works for me. Will write something up and post.

It's been about a decade since I've done anything PbPish but have a fair amount of table top experience. I've been gently browsing a few of the games here for a week or three, and while I don't remember which it was, I remember one that you were in Browman with a positive note.

I'm very curious if my normal dice failure will follow me online, so please find the base stats of a Gnome Wizard (Illusionist). I saw the core only, and am 100% trying to do so, but ask forgiveness if something turns out to not be core as I rely on d20pfsrd to check sources. Though Paizo's SRD may be more useful to source things down.

Foible: Str = 8-2=6

background:

The early morning breeze chills the shaved sides of his head as he kneels at the recent dug graves of his family. His current meditation is from habit more than faith as the recent tragedies that have befallen his family have shaken most of that from him. First the gods took him from his family and now they have taken his family from him.
His meditation takes him back to his youth on the small farm his father tended on the outskirts of Sand Point. The closeness of the farm to the city allowed for safety from the dangers of the area and his father‘s love of the land had earned him respect from the wood elves of the area. The family lived and worked in relative peace. He remembered learning how to defend himself from his father at an early age and his father always called him a natural. They worshiped Erastil god of the hunt and of farming, for obvious reasons. When several clerics of Erastil noticed his ability they inquired with his father if they could take him and teach him the ways of Erastil. His father thought this was a gift from the god himself to allow one of such poor upbringing the ability to learn and become a cleric or monk so he accepted on the spot.
He obeyed his father’s wishes and went with the clerics even though it tore at his heart to be separated. He studied and trained hard and quickly did become a monk skilled at hand to hand combat, a few weapons, and learned alchemy from the clerics at the monestary. Though he worked and studied hard, he always missed his parents and three younger siblings.
When he received the news of his family’s death he was given leave to bury and mourn them. The story of the house burning down struck him as odd but possible. So he has come every day for the past two weeks to kneel and meditate at their graves. His meditation on this morning is broken by the sound of a falcon’s cry and as he turns to see if he can spy the bird he notices a young man. The unusual young man has returned again this weekend. He looks out of place in his fine clothes walking among the graves. Why would any young man choose to spend his time wandering in this type of place, but the thought quickly leaves him as he turns his thoughts back to his family and his future. Where will he go from here, what will he do. He only knows that he does not want to return to the monastery, and life without his family has left a hole in his soul. He really wants nothing more than the sweet release from this reality, but only if it is an honorable one. And this place he once called home, is celebrating while he mourns. The annual Harvest Festival is almost here but what is celebration with no one to celebrate with... it is lonely.
As he looks up the young man stands before him and the young man begins to speak, “Have you heard of the need at Castle Firrin. It seems there are rumors of orc hordes. It seems they need help there and could use anyone willing to join their ranks.” As the monk stood and looked at the young man with confusion the young man continued. “It would seem that they are desperate need.” As the young man finished his sentence he turned and started to walk away.
The monk called after the young man, “Hey wait”. But the young man continued to walk away. The monk decided he would follow after the young man so he turned and grabbed his back pack in order to take all he had with him, but as he turned to run after the young man he was no longer there. The monk, Eli Montack, just stood there not understanding what in the world just happened. But he now had a cause to die for and he knew where he would go from here, Castle Firrin.

Stature- Tall, thin, but well muscled he looks unimposing. He is not handsome but is not ugly and his bald head does not lend to any attractiveness.
Eli Montack is distraught over the loss of his family and has lost some of his faith because of the tragedy. He looks to do good in order to make up for their death and may want to have the sleep of forever.

Dossier of one Castor DuChamp:
Castor had a hard time growing up, being head and shoulders above almost all others in Galt. Raised in a well-off household, he attained full membership in a guild at an age where most people just start getting given apprenticeships.

The guild in question, a rather ambitious project, was a shady organisation with the goal of producing infiltrators from Galt to other neighbouring countries in order to sabotage them from within and bring them at Galt's level. Training was provided in infiltration, social interaction, and other skills needed by cloak-and-dagger personnel. Excelling at all the physical and mental challenges and tests, social interactions were Castor's only problem, and the first one he had his entire life, which infuriated him.

After a while, leaders of the guild managed to make their way to the high positions in Galt's mob rule. Having need for skilled deep-cover agents, Castor was sent to Lastwall to infiltrate and establish a network there. However, a mere month after arriving at Castle Firrine, Castor received a message that the government in Galt was overthrown again, leaving him stranded many miles away from home. Swearing never to go back to that filthy, hungry, stupid, disorganized waste of landmass, Castor snatched his daggers, slapped the messenger in a fit of rage, and left the safehouse. The next day he was the first one to arrive at the recruitment post for Lastwall's army, proposing his considerable skills as a, well, everything.

Personality:
Castor is a rather prideful man, aware of his numerable skills and abilities, and isn't afraid to tell people about them. He has quite the high opinion of himself, and while he will listen to suggestions, he'd call someone names if he feels that they are failing at doing their job.

Appearance:
Castor is a physically impressive man, with dark hair and eyes. He could be called handsome if not for his disheartening grin and abrasive personality.

I decided to go on the character of a man who knows that he's really good at what he does. He isn't a sociopath, but he is close to it. This doesn't mean that I'm going to be a murderhoboing stuff, or that I'll be a disruptive party member, however. It just means that I may some times be rude to other characters in character, and if it gets too much, please do tell me that out of character, and I will absolutely tone it down.

The backstory just happened like that, and I decided to go by feel.

fluf:

Twiks grew up surrounded by wizards as family members on both his mum and dads side where renowned for there skill with spells

He was groomed to become a wizard from an early age and did very well in his study's however when his sorcerers powers started to develop on there own academics began to take backstage to more enjoyable activities.

This was why he now sat in a coach heading of to join the defence of the nation. He wasn't sure why he had singed up, but it probably had something to do with the 3 bottles of wine he'd had and the busty barmaid who said she loved a guy in uniform.

Twiks is a very fun loving gnome with an eye for the ladies. While not a drunk he has been known to over do it on the wine.

Twiks? Languages: Gnomes begin play speaking Common, Gnome, and Sylvan. according to both the d20pfsrd, and the paizo PRD. (3 languages!?!)

Fluff pending. (GM Browman and Twiks permitting, not currently opposed to being related, should things make sense)

Depending on what our party make up looks like, I'm willing to make minor adjustments for the betterment of party cohesion.

I would really like to try a PBP. I haven't done one before, and finding a skype game when I'm located in Japan is a pain thanks to time zones. Once I weave together a Core-happy character, I'll post her!

edit: Planning on a barbarian; my last few characters were far too pacifistic.

Strength - Focus - 18
Dexterity: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Intelligence: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Charisma - Foible - 8

edit again: I see my luck with rolling stats is still terrible online. Wonderful. Is it a reroll with +3 and lower, or lower than +3? I'll reroll just in case, but otherwise I can deal with that.

TAKE TWO
Strength - Focus - 18
Dexterity: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Intelligence: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Charisma - Foible - 8

last edit I promise probably: Ah, yes. The traditional high intelligence and wisdom, low dexterity and constitution barbarian. I can work with this.

It is if the total bonus is less than +3. So go with the first set you rolled.

Silver Crusade

Fluff:
Lost in a sea of Burly men at arms, there in the courtyard of Castle Firrine, practicing at Arms and those waiting to be seen is a slight figure, maybe 3', or perhaps a smidgeon over, easily overlooked at least once, until the light dancing between his fingers draws ones attention back for a closer look.

Dressed in sturdy, responsible clothes of thick cloth and leather, or drab earth and forest tones, yet sporting a shock of vibrant red hair that peaks out from beneath a wide brimmed hat, and from within a hooded cowl.

It is his hands that command attention, thin boned, delicate fingers spin about briskly, between which flash what appears to be beams of light, in Gold, Red, Silver, and Blue. The threads of light glow very gently, barely enough to be noticed, but noticed they are by a few of those waiting nearby.

With the grace of hours of practice as opposed to that of inspired talent, fine threads of light flicker into patterns of a Cat's Cradle. For those truly observant (and nearby), the beams of light are merely a length of string glowing one impossible shade after another.

After maybe 5 to 10 minutes of actively watching, one of the Burly gents nearby steps up into the small space near the Gnome and jeers in a not completely unfriendly tone. "Nice light-show, but the 'Wall is a dangerous place. How is that going to save you, or the men beside you when the horde next comes up and over?

The little hat tips up, to reveal an intense set of ice blue eyes, and a gentle smirk, as tiny puffs of smoke appears followed immediately by a thin line of ice blue flame that begins to slowly circle around the Questioning Soldier.

In but moments it is clearly the beginnings of a Circle of 1-3" of blue flame surrounding the Questioning Soldier, starting at 4 points around, and slowly inching towards each other to close the ring.

Simultaneously small puffs of colored smoke appear soundlessly in the air around the Questioning Soldier, as the smoke drifts skyward it leaves behind glyphs, maybe 6" tall, glowing the color that the smoke was. Each glyph is quickly joined by another, and another. 6 bands of color begin to arc around he who Questioned.

For a fraction of a second, the burly man freezes, and then stares closely at the Red glyphs arching in front of him, and then begins to laugh. For the words repeated in a half dozen languages were the words to a popular ong, spelled out in several enemy and allied tongues.

Concentration check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 DC 16

As the human man begins to laugh the "Portal" opening in front of him shows just a hint of flame within as if from another plane, and the entire construct shatters into a million mufti-colored fragments, to vanish completely with the young gnomes concentration.

"Don't worry, I know a trick or two" spoken with a quiet clarity, yet deep pitch.

The young gnome looks down at his string that no longer glows and blinks.

"Creativity, that's the key. That reminds me of a time that an 8th cousin, twice removed drank a quart of Blue Beer. Care to hear the tale while you wait?

The story is told as a take 10 perform for 12, of a brew, that kept changing colors and flavors. Mechanic note: Silent Image was used for both the Cat's Cradle, and the "Portal", duration: Concentration. There is no "String" in the CRB, UE has it 50' for 1cp, mind if I deduct 1 cp, for any length between 2' and 50'? (Note: No objection if someone wants to tie themselves into the story as he who Questions or any other witness. Please let me know if I'm missing anything, or everything looks good. Thank you.

GM CAN pick which roll I go with

Use the second set.

I'm interested (depending on rolls) in either a cleric of Nethys or a wizard, aiming at Mystic Theurge. I have no PbP play experience, though I'm an avid reader.

Focus Int or Wis 18, foible Cha 8

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

I make that a total bonus of 3 (shame)
