Yes, you are encouraged to roll dice to solve problems and enrich the setting. Spout lore, specifically, is about establishing features of the setting that aren't easily covered by mechanics. Vampires are vulnerable to wooden weapons. The forest is full of undead ents. Spriggans are afraid of fire. Architects always leave trapdoors in belltowers. The safe tiles match the doors. Dwarves have nartural laser vision and proportionally large privates.
I can put it another way: establishing facts about other players is hard because you are working against their perception of themselves.
Finally, providing an interesting result, even a punishing one, will encourage more rolls like this which do not move us forward and create friction between the players rather than the PCs.
If, say, you were establishing a backstory for the last remaining prisoner and that somehow complicated Imazael's claim to a throne, that would be a whole different story, but this first roll simply asstered that the claim was not true. In improvisation, the only rule is that no is boring.
Could I just ignore the roll or state that the move did not trigger? Yes, that was an option, but I considered that to be harsher than using the mechanics to shut it down.
There is a lot of world to create.

This might help... It shouldn't be too bad if we keep it to downtime and keep the descriptions broad...
Also, Zelloris informs you that the village has food enough for one meal... it might not be all in one place, but there is plenty of food. I've updated the character sheets to show total rations... it might not stay up to date.

How does this sound:
When you host a game of stories, describe the challenge you've posed to your players. For each player, take +1 Forward to using that players' actions as inspiration.
When you play a game of stories and play to win, roll+INT. On a hit, describe how your character personally tackled the challenge. On a 10+, gain 1 xp as well.
When you play a game of stories and play to find out what happens, roll+WIS. On a hit, describe what your character lost in overcoming the challenge. On a 10+ your character shows personal growth, take +1 ongoing to a stat of your choice until the next time you rest.
When you play a game of stories and ham it up, roll+CHA. On a hit, write a sixth Bond with another player. On a 10+ also take +1 Forward to aid another.
When you play a game of stories and cheat, roll+DEX. On a hit, describe what you got past the host.

Currently, Pimrin is a villager under Imazael's control pursuant to a role as a companion per Entourage. Some of the other villagers have become hirelings. Gulirk just got two for coming back from a skirmish victorious and offering the villagers their lives and being all commanding 'n stuff. Muirkohm triggered the generation of the villagers' equipment with an attempt at a priest move.
At this point, it's important to see how everyone feels about characters holding multiple roles, and players having multiple characters. As has been pointed out, there are moves that don't work well on PCs.
For example:
can Imazael have Pimrin gain xp for fighting to save her?
Can Muirkohm be part of Imazael's Entourage?
Can Muirkohm use a mob of CucumberTree's PCs to bring Gulirk forward?
Is it a natural progression of this game that you all have crowd-control characters in order to bring fresh lives into the plot?

Okay, My 2 copper on the issue.
a large part of the reason i'm drawn to The luminary, besides getting a CHA-based character, is that it allows me to experiment with different characters, as the mood strikes me (a Playful, kind character in Pimrin, a devious cloudcuculander in Myxis, a mad-ish sage with Filaurel, and an charismatic, manipulative heel-face revolving door central to it all)
as for the others(Or Imazael, outside of her entourage), unless they take moves for it, DD+Cha, or Parley to control other characters (or at least manipulate them)
and in order for those 3 questions:
Well, when she takes Luminary moves, He will technically count as her (For purposed of mechanics), til then, though, she doesn't get xp for him.
Well, I think that's up for consensus. if we say yes, the two should probably have a bond or something that says as much (and if they resolve it, he leaves the entourage, unless they write another one about his place in her entourage), and she gets her entourage bonuses when she works with him. If we say no, he can still be an ally, and de-facto member, but it gives no bonuses.
and... that last one is complicated... I think, if he has the move (which, is that an adapted news move? cause that's awesome if it is) then technically, yes... but I think we should try to avoid PvP, most Apocalypse Engine games don't handle that especially well (Like, honestly, I've been taking strides to never go farther than ideological differences and light manipulation against the other PC's. conflicting interests are great, actual conflict, less so.)

Ah, okay, I'm following.
My question then is, what are the consequences of death for your character, or is there a mechanical distinction between regenerating and death? (like the doctor could theoretically die if they were hurt while regenerating)
It sounds like regenerating would be a fitting result of a successful last breath for your character, but for that you must be level one.
For now I think the life spell can bridge that gap.

*settles some inventory in front of the dm screen*
Belnip has 2d4 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7 adventuring gear(4 uses 1wt)
Belnip can carry 3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3) = 15 5wt
Phaefaen can carry 3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 4) = 8 3wt
Phaefaen has 1d4 ⇒ 3 onions(4 uses, green, 2wt)
The pig is 75 pounds and serves 50. You have 14 cuts of Pork (3 uses, raw, 1wt) Your tanner, Umlur, was able to make the skin into a stylish meatsack. She benefits from the happytime bubble, but uses her time to make a crude sack. If you had a leatherworker, they might have made a satachel or backpack.
You have the beginnings of a food supply chain, but there are some obvious holes. Luckily the villagers are happy enough with unseasoned hunks of pork. Your peddler might be able to salt or smoke some of the leftovers, but they's more of a hobbyist.
Of course, you now have enough food to rest now, and make the trip back...

Let's give Pimrin some stats!
strength: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2) = 9
dexterity: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2) = 10
constitution: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 4) = 14
intelligence: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6) = 17
wisdom: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 1) = 7
charisma: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2) = 7
That cha doesn't jive with how he's been, I'll reroll than
trying that again: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2) = 14
His str and dex can go down to 7 instead.

As we move toward traveling, check the conflict map to arrange marching order among your squads. Be mindful of who is carrying what. Especially food.
LASaROS |
A description of who has how much food is at the top of the character sheets page.
We can do a spot EOS for the crypt encounter, and, since the danger came since the last beat, feel free to retroactively eat to level, but there isn't any time to rest or cook the pork. Monstrous races can get away with raw meat, but eating raw meat makes yours a monstrous race. If everyone eats their meat raw, the world will be a more hostile place.
The Eternal, you will need something more than your face-swap to resolve a bond for xp.

I blame Muirkhom for losing my icon of Ibris! Definitely played out. replacing it with: Muirkhom is well meaning, but requires subtle guidance. +1 xp
I trust Phraanz implicitly because he’s kin to me. Yeah, I think this advances to: Phraanz is my lieutenant, I trust him with my unlife. +1 xp
I’ll learn the secrets of Gulirk’s origin. just replace Gulirk with the Eternal, it's not over yet
I respect Krenin for their sacrifice. ...Yeah, this makes no sense for our characters, scrapping this and replacing it with: Krenin is a leader like myself, I will forge an alliance with him.
I lied to Kyrillosr about Ibris. Also kinda boring, scrapping and replacing with: Kyrill is a good friend to me, and under my protection.
Did we learn something new and important about the world?
Yep, apparently there is actually some legitimacy behind my claims... also, Tuning fork's aren't good for churches, and giant caterpillar monsters are horrifying! +1 xp
Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy?
Well, We did... I like to think I provided moral support. +1 xp
Did we loot a memorable treasure?
I got Pimrin and Myxis, and Filaurel, and that scroll and the gun... and Pimrin, did I mention Pimrin, cause he's great! +1 xp
Did we witness the horrible death of a comrade?
Umm... are we counting that gravedigger? and a few of us witnessed Gulirk's death (again).
Motivation
Lady Ascendant
I think so, A few people joined me, and apparently I made reality accept my station! +1 xp
Leveling
6 xp +Nummy gravedigger blood =level 1 Imazael (upping Wis, taking entourage!)(and 1 xp carrying over)
The Eternal |
Bonds
Imazael owes me a kiss.Yeah she still owes me
I owe Muirkhom so much he owns me. Contract has been torn up +1 xp
Kyrillosr cursed my momma. No discussion yet
Did we learn something new and important about the world?
Yep, meddling with the forces of creation does have consequences +1
Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy?
A gigantic disco worm is nice, But turning a vamp is better +1
Did we loot a memorable treasure?
Pork is the other white meat. And we have alot of it +1
Did we witness the horrible death of a comrade?
Yes, an orc I once loved is gone forever. Someone give me a tissue +1
.
Motivation
An Eternal Heart - Mend what was left behind.
Doing my best, but it went horribly wrong (Sanctify)
Leveling
+5 xp. Upping Cha +1 for Sage of Ages Level 1
Kyrillosr |
I had been ready to level to 0, so I'll start with that. Does this let me polymorph without the chalice?
+1 to Wisdom again for 11+2, which gives a modifier of +1. Is HP equal to Constitution now? If so, I should have 9.
I haven't propagated merfolk morality, so nothing for alignment. We learned of worms, overcame a few vampires, and saw Gulirk die. I'm not sure about the treasure, at least for my part.
I think that adding the bond "Imazael's errand boy" fits. The others are unresolved, if Gulirk's bond moves to the Eternal.
Adding 3 from end of session to 1 from the failed detection of blood earlier gives 4 XP.

Oh the subject of minions:
My entourage are Noble Courtiers as befits the companions of the Lady Ascendant of the House of the Despoiler.
They have: Dissent +2, Eloquence +1, Fighting +1, Learning +1.
Their accouterments are: Finery and riches, and Many weapons (most concealed)
They are Skilled in: Crime (assassination, theft, forgery, coups) and Diplomacy.
and they are Hedonistic and prone to religious heresy.
Muirkhom Garathal |
Bonds: I’ll protect Phraanz from ‘imself.
Not...not really. I have to get that hammer off him, and he's still got deeper issues besides, as Muirkhom knows it.
Gulirk tells it how it is, and I respect ‘er for it.
...nope! Definitely not relevant anymore after their last interaction. +1 XP, and I'm not writing up any more bonds quite yet, since Muirkhom doesn't know about the new situation with Gul yet. I don't feel quite right writing a bond with someone that might not technically exist anymore?
Kyrill needs ta learn about power.
Haven't explored this really.
I'll learn Em's secret about Phraanz.
Feel like this could do with changing. It isn't resolved, but I feel like this doesn't want to focus on Phraanz now.
"Em's afraid'a vamps, an' I'm findin' out the REAL reason."
Because being afraid of something just because it's powerful and dangerous is implausible.
Questions: The others have covered things well enough here, and I'd rather not reiterate the same thing. XP for me.
Hand of Midas: I'm not sure whether to say no on this because I really haven't had many active opportunities here, or yes because I still have all the gold in the vicinity safe in my possession. Leaning not.
If I'm going to need to eat that raw pork to level, I'm passing. I'm perfectly happy with dwarves not being a monstrous race, even if it isn't currently convenient for me.
Muirkhom Garathal |
Munga, Munga? What does that even meeeean?
If I can get some bread or something though, I'm bumping my Charisma up again and taking Divine Guidance.

You don't have to make the new bond with the same person, and you can have more than one bond per person (that's how you increase your aid roll)

What about finding and dispersing pyrite to increase the number of safe hands? It's a bt tenuous, but it's effort toward the greater goal.

There's all kinds of food, you just have to find someone who has a reason to feed you. (list is at the top of the character sheets page)
