1 person marked this as a favorite.

They stood together around the open fire just as the sun crested the City wall, sharing a breakfast of eggs, pan bread, boiled boar's haunch, and black coffee. The Commons around them was alight with other dancing fires and lamps held by shuffling figures, families and other companies taking advantage of the free open-air fire pits and local food vendors. The recent sugar shortage left the morning coffee tasting bitter, a fact that elicited more than a few grumblings.

The City's problems were relatively minor as compared to some; few went hungry, and bands of roving orcs and rumors of terrible monsters from the deep had become nothing but folklore and tavern talk. Still, the mismanagement of the City without a king, the much-debated rulings of questionable judges, and the questionable authority wielded by town guards, gave the people enough to complain about.

And so, here they gathered. A true ruler could unite the kingdom and bring prosperity to the City, most people agreed. But the Finders' Keep was guarded by ancient magic, the dark and dangerous halls claiming the lives of many naive adventurers or power-seekers over the years. Yet the old tales of abandoned mines and haunted towers holding locked-away treasures offered the prospect of hope; perhaps somewhere in those ruins beyond the City lay artifacts powerful enough to overcome the dangers of the Keep and allow a small band of brave and strong adventurers to finally reclaim the throne and lead the City back to its former glory. Thus, with bitter coffee, strong resolve, and a common interest in the good of the City, they stood circled around the open fire just as the sun crested the City wall.

Melaphi stood only close enough to the fire to feel a bit of warmth from it, but never came any close than that except to quickly snatch a piece of food from the pan in the flames. Fire was pain.

What had once been white gloves, but had turned grayish with dirt and grime, covered his hands and forearms, but even with that covering the worst of the burns, his upper arms still showed some of the scarring.

Other than his arms, Melaphi was youthful in appearance, light brown hair worn slightly long. Serious face when not engaged in conversing with others. Quick to smile when so engaged. The smile always left the impression that his scars bothered him far less than it usually bothered others. The gloves covering his hands and arms was for others consideration, not his own comfort.

With the rising of the sun he spoke aloud his thoughts, "It's time for a change. But change doesn't come on its own, it requires a catalyst." Melaphi looked over the city wall at the wastes beyond. "Surely someone in the city must know something of what's out there, and where we can search for what we need to make a change."

With a mouthful of boar, Ransaq mosey's over to Melaphi. "You know if no one does, that only means whatever it is hasn't been pilfered yet."

Judged already? Harsh lol. I actually read it wrong though, I thought the sun was setting, not rising. I read it again and realized we were eating eggs. A drunken night around a fire is a lot different than an early morning around one. It tends to draw a different crowd lol. I'm sure there is little of interest to me here.

For future reference though, Robin Hood was C-G;) There have been many games where rich nobles were the source of the problem, and from them I do not mind filling my purse.

"What are you two blabberin' about?" Came the question from close to the fire, a gravely voice obscured by the churning torrent of meat filling his mouth. Rising from his crouched position, the voice was given an owner, a tall yet stocky looking man bearing all the signs of a soldier. Hauberk, shield, weapons and an intricate network of bright scars marring every patch of exposed skin. Moving around the fire towards the pair, he introduced himself with a thunderous burp, a surprised look in his eyes. "That was a good one eeh?" He commented, voice once more obscured as he spoke into his coffee.

Emptying his cup with a satisfied "Aaah, thats the stuff." He extended a meaty hand for either of them to take. "Names Garroth." He said cheerfully, a tusky smile causing the two to realize he was not entirely human. He had been covered in shadows from the fire as he approached, but even at this range, it took the flashing of his over sized canines to give away his orcish blood. "Forgive the intrusion and forwardness, but I couldn't help overhear what sounded like an opportunity brewin'" He chuckled. "In my line of work you get good at spotting things, hearing things, not least of which the chance for work." He took a few steps back towards the fire, refilling his cup from the coffee pot.

"So, do go on, Im all ears. I believe the last topic of conversation was Loot?" He said, looking expectantly at them.

GOOD MORNING! You all seem like fine fellows, would you care to try out my newest creation? I found a man who raises bees in a clover field, it give the mead a rather refreshing aftertaste. Oh, I am Orald, one of the local Brewers.

The large Ulfen man cocks his head as if listening to someone.

Yes grandfather I know you suggested these people for a reason, I am getting there. Uhummm. My ancestors think that there is a great epic in the making and think that you may be interested in being involved. Tell me, are you prepared to be heroes of legend?

Melaphi extends his hand to Garroth, wincing in pain slightly as the half-orc takes it in a firm grip. "Melaphi Dasan. Don't know for certain about the loot, but you've heard the stories, it's out there for those willing to go find it. Which it sounds like your willing."

He goes silent as Orald barges in to introduce himself, his lips curving into a half smile at the last words spoken by the human.

"New toys are fun and all as my friend...", he pauses just briefly, realizing he never asked for the elf's name, "here will attest. I'm in agreement with your ancestors though. I for one intend to see a change happen. If I get paid along the way, that's just a bonus."

@Ransaq - that's why I specified LG or NG alignments. I'll let it slide, but remember there's a paladin in the party, and non-lethal is generally on the table.
And yes, it's breakfast. The villains got biscuits and mead after dark. ;)

Sorry if it wasn't clear, but the idea was that you'd all at least met, and learned that you are all generally good and would like something better for the city. Specifically, redeeming the empty throne of the Finders' Keep. But you can back-roleplay as much of that as you want.

Aurora stares greedily at the breakfast before her. Breakfast? outside no less? I don't think I can remember a time I did this.

"Oh my this is good." She exclaims excitedly as she takes a bite of one of her sausages, her tail swaying happily in the cool morning air.

She looks on in interest as the elf and burned man converse about loot or some such thing. Lost in her own thoughts about the delicious breakfast she only catches snippets of the conversation. Wonder what they're talking about? Got to be about fixing all this hurt that's going on right now in the city.

She is brought out of her reverie and laughs happily as Orald introduces himself. "A new alchemical creation? oh my yes, I must try this. Mead is after all just chemicals interacting. Oh this is exciting!" Aurora giggles to herself as she takes the offered drink, tasting it scientifically, trying to determine ingredients.

"Heroes of Leg...oh okay I can taste the honey, and a bit of the clover, but there is something else here. Just can't quite put my tongue on it....egend? Don't know if I need to be a hero of legend. Maybe just make the town a bit better. Okay I can't figure it out, you have to tell me Orald what's in this? I See way to many sad faces walk into the shop recently. It's just not fair." Aurora adds with a small pout.

Garroth turned from the first pair to stare at Orald with a bemused look. He wrenched his hand from the handle of his blade, where it had instinctively come to rest at Oralds first boisterous syllables, and walked over to the man. "Well, I dont know about bein' a hero or anythin'. Guess I aint opposed to that bein' the outcome of my actions, but I find coin to be a far more satisfyin' reward." He winked at the large man, producing a stupid grin. "Ale aint bad either though." He added, extending a hand to accept a cupful.

Looking sideways at Aurora as she sipped and chattered, he laughed loudly. "That aint no way to drink pretty lass." He nudged her cup with his and held it up between them. "Cheers." With that, he loudly and messily consumed the contents of his cup, and for the second time that morning a loud content burp rang out amidst the nearby buildings. AAAAAAHH! Oh Orald my good man, I shall most certainly have to accept this little endeavor weve got brewin' here. As long as you keep doin' whatever it is youve done to this here nectar!" Garroth shot Orald a sideways glance, one brow raised in puzzlement. "Ale, mead, beer. I thought these were all just names for the same sweet lady." He shrugged. "Never much bothered with the namin' as long as it went down smooth."

Hands at his hips, he turned to face Orald, looking up at the large man. "Aint no insult intended, to you or your grandfather, and I trust both of you will understand when I say, I wont be apologizin' for a perceived slight I did not intend."

He crossed his arms, widening his stance as if expecting Orald to get violent. "Never could tell with these Ulfen."

Spirits? hmmm, I'll have to study that one, yep. If he really see's spirits I could learn something from him.

Aurora sits back with her glass of mead (which she continues to scientifically sip), and sits in silence for a moment before quietly speaking up again. "Umm, so we've gathered, you all seem very nice, but what exactly are we planning on doing? Grand gestures probably aren't going to work. Orald looked like he was about to launch in to an epic explanation of the differences in alcohols when Aurora steals his wind. After he stops flapping his gums about like a dumbstruck fish he continues.

Erm yes, I guess we should try and find out about the situation. But first we will need a name for our group and a proper banner. That way everyone can take note of the force for goodness that we represent! My great great-grand uncle, twice removed, says that in his day he was part of a small group of warriors known as the Radiant Cup. I think their banner is hidden somewhere in my attic. I could probably find someone to refresh it's iconography.

Garroth pondered Auroras question for a moment, running two fingers across his chin as he did so. "Thats a good question there lass." He shrugged, not having thought of much. "I think I heard tell of a failed Dwarven hold, out in the forest. Apparently there wasnt enough metals to be had, so they picked up and left after a few years." He paced a bit, lightly punching his head with his index finger, as if the act would shake loose more information. "They probably took most of their stuff with them, but there might still be somethin' there worth salvagin'." He held his hands out to either side. "Thats all I got, any of you hear of somethin' worth lookin' at?"

Listening to Orald, he smiled slightly. "Well, a group like us hardly makes a military unit. Having a name seems sort of grand, when we dont even know if we make a good team. Still, its not exactly a bad idea." He toasted the large Ulfen and emptied his cup. "Radiant Cup, I wonder where that name came from." He smirked knowingly and chuckled. Ransaq looks at Orald for a moment after he finishes speaking to him, then turns to address the group. Given that no one is looking for anything specific, and most of you have rolled, I'm going to assume you all decide to follow Melaphi's information about treasure nearby.

GM Rolls:
North, South, East, West: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Female Kitsune Ninja / Bard

"I don't know if we should just go and take this person's treasure. That doesn't seem like a very good thing to do. Just because people call him crazy doesn't mean he deserves to get robbed." Aurora contemplates.

Never know what he might be saving it for. Maybe he's going to go and rescue a town of puppies. That would be nice. If I was crazy that's what I would do, or maybe I would build an amazing lab! Oh just think of the things you could do if everyone thought you were crazy. No one looking down on you when you roll a dice and start mixing random things together. Plus explosions where no one bats an eye! Aurora shakes her head quickly, dispelling the images collecting in her mind.

"That haunted dungeon could be dangerous though. Maybe we should go deal with that? Oh! It would probably make the person who lives there happy too!" She suggests with enthusiasm.

GM:
If they are readily available Melaphi would like to pick up 3 vials of holy water before we head out. If not will go without.

Melaphi returns soon, a horse in tow with saddle and saddle bags. He double checks the straps then mounts up, "I'm ready."

Based on AC and HP I'm going to recommend Garroth take point during our travels. Ransaq is slightly better perception, but one solid hit could take him down.

Between Aurora's survival skills and Orald's knowledge of the terrain, the party manages to arrive safely sometime late afternoon. Fragments of headstones and old, rusted holy symbols litter the area, now overgrown by weeds in most places. However, once central tomb stands open, large stone doors long since toppled over. The ground surrounding it is barren, seemingly unfit for even grass to grow. Low groans and sharp whispers echo from within the tomb, warning away the weak of spirit.

"That's an easy one Garroth." Melaphi chants for a few seconds then touches his finger to the half-orc's shield. A soft glow spreads over the shield. In the light of day the glow is barely discernible, but as Garroth steps just inside the crypt the glow casts back the darkness.
