Elebrin opens her mouth at Gwl and then closes it for fear that she too will babble at the cost of Jym then promptly dying from blood loss. Having found one of many described flasks, the elf uncorks the bottle and roughly jams it into Jym's mouth, certain to lift his head slightly to allow for a proper swallow...

I don't think there's really a strict convention for this; in the interest of keeping game play moving, I'd suggest that, hereafter, whoever says, "I administer the potion" also roll the results in the same post.

I'll go ahead and roll it this time.

Pirate lady says, "Arrrr, yer hobbit be downin' 'em like a lusty captain's new cabin boy!"
You're not sure if her unrelenting stream of salty remarks is pure color, or if the Crimson Fleet is really that vile, but you're tending towards the latter.

Jym looks at the pirate lady, still gathering his wits from another near-death experience, but he's as chipper as ever.

"Hi! I bet cabin boys sure drink a lot, huh? I've heard that all seamen do! Hi, I'm Jym Withawye! What's your name? Do you know where Vanthus Vandorborean is? I like your boots!"

Pirate Lady Bluff: 1d20 + 13 - 3 ⇒ (1) + 13 - 3 = 11

For once, Jym finds himself at a loss for words -- he stands in awe as Pirate Lady lets out a stream of verbiage that makes him feel fumbling and stuttering in comparison.

"Aye, everyone and their half-arsed arse slaves is lookin' for Vanthus, now it's too late to do 'em any more good than a pinpricked condom after ye've already died from the slimy doom! That I, Captain Harliss Javell of the Crimson Fleet, should be reduced to bandyin' words wi' the likes of a fishman and a catomite are beyond all gods' reckonin', says I. In this business ye put up or shut up, and aside from a feeble poke with a spear, not one a you can fight worth a lick except Orcsack here, but even he swings like he's choppin' trees for a new mast instead of choppin' heads for a mountain o' skulls."

She briefly pauses to catch a breath and wipe the sweat from her head: she's really not looking too healthy, but she's mad enough to make up for it and then some. Unfortunately for her, she's not thinking clearly and maybe lets too much slip:

"So ye want Vanthus? Too late. I'll learn that poxed whoreson what it is t'foul my business, and right wot he'll be beggin fer buggerin' by a bandersnatch, when he gets home. Th'Vanderboren name be no secret to me, and once Bo'sun Drevoraz gets to that house, he'll do worse than that to the sister and mom and pop while Vanthus be watchin' and cryin' like a baby with a bottle o' acid milk... aye, then kill every last mother's son of the line, and we'll bankrupt their creditors besides, just to underline the note. Cross the Crimson Fleet and we take everything ye have, all ye'll ever be, and throw it in the wake like chum bait. Best not forget that, ye sorry lot of nothing!"

She begins striding down the passage towards the cave mouth again, making poor speed due to a nasty bite wound on her leg that, Jym notices, has also ruined one of her nice boots.

I'm a little confused about the layout of this place. Did she walk the way that we came in?"

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Yep. Imagine a stick figure with one arm. The head is the cave where Cpn Javell was holed up; the body is the tunnel you're in, the legs are the beach, spreading out past the cave mouth. The one arm is the side tunnel that Ripclaw came stealing up.

Not receiving any advice from his friends, Jym sighs and cowboys up.

There's lots of variables here, so I'm just going to give you a list of "If" and "Then" statements in lieu of confusing role-playing. Mea culpa.

Jym tells the others to hang back (so they're not in spell range and thus lessen the effectiveness of the spell), but be ready to save the plump little halfling in case he needs it. Jym tries to get pirate lady to stop long enough to listen to his song.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

If he has to cast suggestion (DC 16) to make her stop and listen, he'll do so.

Then he'll cast hypnotism (DC 15 [+2 if not in combat], 2d4+5 HD) to convince her that killing Vanthus' family is the wrong message since Vanthus is estranged, and that she should help them stop that order to minimize the danger of reprisal. Then he'll suggest that helping this group catch Vanthus is the better course of action to better exact her revenge.

If at any point she becomes aware of Jym's manipulations and attacks him, he'll cast vanish and try to run back to the others.

Sorry, up to my neck right now with work.

Uro will wait for Jytms plan to play out, but will ready himself in case things go badly.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Having already failed to Diplomatize her, Jym quickly realizes that a little bit of "help" might be in order:

HD hypnotized: 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 1) + 3 = 6
Will vs. hypnotism to stop her: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 3 = 14
Will vs. suggestion to follow Jym's plan: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (18) + 7 - 3 = 22

Hypnotism specifically fascinates a target and makes them stop and listen; suggestion compels them to follow some course of action you outline at the time of casting (Chapter 8). Yes, I know Paizo thinks that hypnotism should do both of those things and still be lower level, but meh. Your plan is still a good one!

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Jym employs his hypnotism spell, which nearly always makes people stop what they're doing and listen to him. (Uro and Elabrin, for example, who both happen to be within 20 feet of him, both listen carefully to whatever he has to say next.) Captain Harliss pauses, like she wants to listen as well, but then sneers as if his entreaties are beneath her, and continues on her way. (In game: her HD > 6, so the effects spill over. Which is sad, because she totally would have failed that save!)

Without her standing and listening, Jym's suggestion doesn't carry the weight it normally would, and she resists it easily.

Spoiler:
For what it's worth, I'm probably more disappointed than you are that didn't work, because it would have enabled me to actually think about the rest of the adventure instead of following on the (very obvious) rails. As it is, your quick ship travel will still put a monkey wrench in the adventure timeline, so there's still a silver lining.

Current HP: 28/28 -- Perc: -1/+1 in cities -- Inspiration: 14/14 rnds -- Vanderboring Estate Map

Well, I did specifically say that Jym asked the others to hang back so that they weren't within spell range. This was implying that Jym would follow the captain until she had walked far enough away.

Quote:
Jym tells the others to hang back (so they're not in spell range and thus lessen the effectiveness of the spell), but be ready to save the plump little halfling in case he needs it.

Is there a map that we're referencing for exact positioning?

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Sorry about that -- others being caught was meant as flavor text, solely to indicate that, although it didn't affect pirate-lady due to HD, it was still an effective spell. I'll be more circumspect (and take fewer liberties) in the future.

Current HP: 28/28 -- Perc: -1/+1 in cities -- Inspiration: 14/14 rnds -- Vanderboring Estate Map

Ah, okay. No worries.

Jym hustles back over to the others, his frustration apparent.

"We need to do something! She's sent people to kill our boss, and she might know where Vanthus is!

"My plan is to wait for that wound in her leg to make her topple over... soonish, but we should come up with a contingency plan on the off chance that doesn't work! Perhaps Captain Van Harden can be of assistance. I'm certain he's not fond of pirates."

HP 59/59 AC 17 Per:10 Rage 0/12 AC: 20 DR: 4

"Let's follow her. She'll probably lead us to Vanthus. If she does anything too crazy, at least we'll be around to stop her."

They follow.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Pirate lady goes stomping out of the cave, stumbling a bit as she hits the sand. She's down on one knee when a mutated macaw comes flying down, trying to bite off her nose; a quick thrust of the rapier spits it like a capon, and she stumbles on. Surveying the wreckage, she sees the ship with the wyvern motifs is still seaworthy; laboriously dragging a rowboat into the water, she begins rowing for it, weakly, the sweat pouring from her face.

Bluff: 1d20 + 13 - 3 ⇒ (6) + 13 - 3 = 16

Harliss wheels at the orc's unexpected outburst, face registering surprise -- but not fear. An ordinary person would have been left gibbering in terror, but a captain of the Crimson Fleet has witnessed sights that would blast a person's soul, and is left without any normal sense of fear.

However, Uro's command, while failing to cow her into submission, is not without effect. "Well, well, Orc-Sack! Thar be a man hiding under those urchin's clothes after all! It may be I'll take ye fer a sail... so, what it be ye think ye know about Vanthus, that I do not?"

HP 59/59 AC 17 Per:10 Rage 0/12 AC: 20 DR: 4

The orc stamps a foot and points out to nowhere. "That Vanthus is a slimier than Otyugh's anus, not just to us, but to his family. They've disowned him and they would be the last people he turns to. Going after them is a waste of your time. Team up with us and lets find him."

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

A cunning look crosses her face. "Aye, then... if ye can sail, ye can come aboard, Orc-Sack. Bring yer simpering cabin-boy if ye must..." and, eying Elabrin, "...and maybe a cabin-girl for me own bunk." Waving a hand at Gwlybwr, she says, "Arrr, but Fish-Bait can be just that -- I'll have no such thing on my ship."

HP 59/59 AC 17 Per:10 Rage 0/12 AC: 20 DR: 4

Uro's bluster didn't strike fear into Captain Javell's stony heart, but did successfully browbeat her a bit, and she accedes to his demand -- albeit with poor grace.

She insists that Uro and Gwl man the oars of the rowboat; when you reach the splendid Sea Wyvern, she yells, "Look alive, ye lubbers! Orc-Sack, reef the sails! Fishguts, pull anchor! Cabinboy, I want all burned sail and rope changed out on the double! Cabingirl, get below and fetch me a bottle of rum! There be no slackers on a ship I run, or a good keel-hauling will be yer lot, ye scurvy bunch of arse-warts!"

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Elebrin has no problem locating the rum; there are any number of bottles in one of the nicer cabins -- but unfortunately locked in a cabinet.

The others are less successful: with zero ranks in Profession (Sailing) among the three of them, they have absolutely no idea where to even start. Therefore, rather than steering while the anchor comes up and the sails fill with wind, Captain Javell is left standing at the wheel looking silly as the ship stays at anchor.

"Procan's prick! A crew o' dead wharf-rats be more useful than this sorry lot! I said weigh anchor! Reef the sails! Step to, dogs, or it'll be the lash for all of ye!"

She grabs a cat-o-nine-tails from a nearby hook and lurches menacingly towards the party.

Perceptioningly find a key or ROCK?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Elebrin takes a quick look around the room and notes a number of "keys" along the lines of (a) a heavy brass lantern; (b) a heavy cutlass; (c) a stout wooden rod with a loop handle whose function is unknown to you, but which Cpt. Javell would doubtless refer to as a "belaying pin."

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

It begins to dawn on her mutant-disease-fogged mind that none of you actually know how to sail. The lash falls from her nerveless fingers, and she numbly grabs the rum from Elabrin, pops the cork, and takes something like a third of the bottle at a swig.

"Thar be no use, then," she says. "There will be nothing left o' yer Vanderboren friends but a bunch o' gibbering freaks after Drevoraz can't find Vanthus.
