ok that's a little bit of a twist, I thought Zummabu kept a thief around for "acquisitions" to be a thief for "acquisitions" hhhmmmm, how to respond.

Trib drops his jaw is surprise, looking from Namtar and back to Zummabu "Harm? No we didn't Harm him. Anthing to us?" Trib looks quickly back to Namtar.

It's all you buddy!

Namtar grimly steps forward, dropping his gear to the floor. Naked, he kneels before Zummabu, exposing his scarred back, and pressing his forehead to the floor. No, Master, they did not harm us. I stole from a freedman. I took his property, although I did not hurt him. I did this to delay their pursuit of the tombs. I lied to his comrade and pretended to help him to his rooms. And, when we were there, I took his rightful things. His sword, armor, map, and potions. I accept your word and punishment. I thought this would please you, Master. I have shamed your name thrice over, and will beg your judgement. The punishment that Tribim would suffer, I ask that you place on my head as well. I am your property, Master, and acted in your name. As I am yours, it is as though you have stolen, Master. Please, spare the freedman his crimes, and deliver judgement thrice over to me, your slave.

Unanticipated background conflict...but I think we can work it out. Zummabu's not actually surprised you stole stuff off the others; you're adventurers. :)

"Lying is no crime," Zummabu said. "The taking... Tell me, this man is a person of good character? Pious? A dutiful slave of the gods?"

'I stole from a freeman? He really is hung up on this master slave thing. Punishment that Tribim would suffer? Well that's nice but lets not pull the whip out too fast.' Trib keeps his head down, and mumbles under his breath, almost unhearable. "We did help the bugger ta his room, that's gotta be worth something, if we left him there, someone coulda killed him."

Hearing Zummabu say 'lying is no crime' Trib perks up a little. "Ya lying's not a crime." but quickly shuts up realizing he didn't really know a thing about his personality.

'We may get away with this yet, without a beating.'As Regin Ald recommends recompense Tribim smiles and echoes, "Yeah, Recompense!"

Yeah, we did heard bad things about his character too, assuming we're talking about the same lad. - said Dommer, resolute - Still, yar' not authority. The law doesn't respond to ya, neither you deliver it.

He approaches Namtar and Tribim, touching the shoulder of the monk.

You seem sorry for your actions and you seem now to understand your errors. Ya'ra monk! Law and balance should be your heart and road.

Then he turns to Tribim.

As for you, I just see a common thief with no loyalty and no place near me. How can I trust someone like that? 'Aye should deliver ya to the militia guards as we speak. You sought only your own... "Recompense"... - the last words leave his mouth with disgust, as he turns his eyes to Zummabu.

Namtar thinks of himself as a gladiator slave.. not really a monk

He wore the belt of a Champion of the City of Gems. Namtar flinches at the dwarf's touch, but he holds himself still. I am my master's tool. I have shamed him. That is my concern.

'A common thief, I'm an uncommon thief, thank you very much.' Trib smirks slightly and then realizes the dwarf is serious. Nodding his head in agreement with Namtar and Zummabu, "Hold on sir dwarf, it's Dommer, isn't it? I am not a common thief I am a train craftsman, with interests in magic and tha tombs of our fathers and possibly the old gods. My family has been in Dalath for generations. I learned my skill ta better delve the crypts. I do not rob from tha people of Dalath. An' I do see these 'adventurers' as a threat ta us as friends ta Zummuba and citizens of Dalath, they are goin' after what rightfully belongs ta this city." Looking a little sheepish "And I lost a lot of gold to his partner and the people I bribed to find em. saw that you two posted so I changed it a little, if you check his backstory he really isn't a thief, not yet.

Arundel watches all this go on, very carefully keeping his face still and neutral. (Always knew that one was trouble. Lacks the proper discipline for proper magic use, and now is apparently a thief to boot. All the same, best to try to keep the peace.)

"Dommer, I don't like this turn much better than you; during my interactions with their wizard Kassu, he earned my respect as a brilliant and friendly man. However, particularly from Tribim's and Namtar's perspective at the time, they saw this champion-type as a threat, and nothing they heard of the man's antics showed otherwise; to steal from an enemy, from a threat, should perhaps be given more leeway than a theft would normally have."

Dommer grunts.

I see your rationality, Elf, as I see the others'. - he starts - However, this lowly piece of an elk's arse stole from a drunk, fainted lad for his own personal gain. Even in his own words he says he was trying ta' recover a loss.

He turns to Zummabu.

'Aye will follow whatever you need, old friend. 'Aye owe you a big, big debt. However, yar' asking me to trust someone with no loyalty, a common thief who coulda rob or slit my throat on my sleep. Cards on the table: I both regret that I didn't see this coming, leading to potentially unfun conflict and am delighted that we're RPing it out without hard feelings. I love you all. :) My agenda here is entirely to come up with an everyone wins scenario.

Zummabu sat for a long moment, considering.

"I never meant to ask for you to compromise your morals. I'm very sorry to not have anticipated the concern. But I can assure you that Tribim is exceptionally loyal to his friends and companions. I know your trust is dear and I can't presume upon it; I'm sure I've already asked too much," Zummabu said, apologetic. "As you may have realized, I myself find engaging with new and different people rather difficult."

"But it is my station to pronounce upon the law. It is true that the victim is a large man and, as Regin says, he has harmed many with his strength. It is the way of the gods that the strong rule the weak, and the law of our empire. But it is also the law that no wrongdoing goes unpunished. And the strong are only strong in relation to others. I suspect that of those worthies here gathered, I am the weakest of arm. But the gods, our Masters, have given me other strengths. With the word of Gilgeam the Great my brother can break a strong man to his will -a man who might break his bones and take his life- and drive the strong man into the dirt, and see him beg to kiss the righteous foot of Gilgeam's martinet."

This is something that happens every month or so, usually to a burly slave, in a public display of Gilgeam's power.

"It is true that Tribim is not this champion's equal in might, as I am not. But in drinking himself to stupor, did he not make himself weak? If a man drank before he oiled his skin and entered the sacred ring, we would not call it wrong for a sober man to beat him. Choosing weakness is itself weakness, so those who do not choose it are stronger for the comparison. Then was it wrong for Tribim to use his strength against this man's weakness?" The wizard pondered again, tapping his chin as he thought.

"Perhaps not. Perhaps so. In either event, he cut no throats even when given the chance. If he has sinned, then he sins with the man. Both wrongs deserve punishment, under the gods' law. For his sins and weakness, it is right to take from the champion. But the law is not a thief, which takes only for its satisfaction. The law takes to punish, without thought to gain. We take the eye for the eye taken, not to become rich upon eyes. It is a right of vengeance given to those wronged."

"Tribim," Zummabu said sternly. "In the name of our Supreme Ruler, may he ever reign, I pronounce on you this punishment: You will surrender those coins and other goods you have taken from the drunken man to his victims, not stinting a copper, and bear that loss upon yourself. So you will wipe away your sin, give them the recompense he owes to them, and be righteous in the eyes of Those Above."

All of this is kosher -if a little irregular- under Untheric law. Zummabu is a pureblooded Mulan of priestly rank. Tribim is his inferior: not of priestly station, Mulan, or even human, so Z has especially broad discretion.

It's cool, Dommer, Trib will grow on you!

'Lowly piece of elks arse? is an elk what I think it is?' Trib puts his hands on his hips, staring at the Dwarf. "There's no need ta call names, ya, ya Dwarf! I stole that map fer all of us. Then covered up tha fact we were after tha map by takin' his other stuff so it looked like a normal robbery. And don't get so high and mighty cause were all plannin' on going ta Rob a crypt, so' ya's can climb down off a' yer high horse, er elk, er whatever it is you think yer on. When Zummabu begins to deliberate, Trib turns back around. ' so's might makes right, that's the problem with this place. But it's fair, the big guy didn't harm me so we should give the wealth to the people he did hurt, I guess the bribes and gambling were the cost of doing business.

Trib nods his head in agreement with Zummabu's ruling. Addressing his friend and mentor "That's at least reasonable. Can we keep tha map? Their going to do harm to Dalath by robbing from tha crypt. We all know were tha best way ta stop them, and were going ta need tha map ta do it." Looking from Zummabu to Namtar to the rest of the team, finally to Dommer. I didn't mean ta disparage anyone's honor, even yours Dommer. I just wanted to cover our tracks lookin' like a robbery. Yes and recoup my losses, which will not happen now, are ya happy? If not I'm happy to leave tha team. But let me ask this one question. Did any of ya get as much information as Namtar and me?" pointing at the map.

I must admit I'm a little confused. Your character, who is lawful, has a wisdom of 16, has been using insults to express himself, and his original point is that Trib is not 'law enforcement.' Is now going to result to 'taking the law into his own hands' and punish trib, for saying that robing a crypt is robbery?

He even said he didn't mean to 'disparage anyone's honor' even Dommers and volunteered to leave...

Amarekashu looked at the others. Slowly, ponderously, the strange man had been considering the situation, the morals of what was done and how the others were reacting. It wasn't a simple situation, really, but it was done, and now its aftermath must be dealt with. "Our methods differ. Our strengths differ. Our skills differ. We must learn to accept this, to embrace these differences, to make our allies strength into our strength. Only by functioning together will we survive what is to come."

His strange eyes turned slowly to Namtar and Tribim. "Stealing will never sit well with me, and I ask that Tribim only use such skills to disarm threats to us and others. The man whose things was taken was, from my understanding, an abuser of women and of drink. If he retained the things that were taken he may have done harm. I cannot excuse that Tribim and Namtar have done, but I cannot condone removing a wanton drunkards ability to harm the innocent. I ask them to keep these things in mind when next such an option arrises. The Masters judgement has been made in this affair."

Looking over at Donmer. "Friend Donmer, insulting others of our band is not the be taken lightly. We are one group, by our vow to Zummabu. I ask that you retract the harsh words spoken now that he has accepted his punishment and understands our reaction. For us to function and survive, such words cannot stand between us, or they will stand between us and our goal."

Very well. Let's see this map, then.

Zummabu doesn't care much either way about the map going back as restitution. It's unlikely that the injured parties would get much use out of it. If you want to give it to them, then he can always make a copy.

Zummabu sat silent for a pregnant moment before unrolling the small map.

"As you can see, it is not the finest of the gods' creations. The markings are in a fairer hand, likely that of Wizard Kassu. There we find welcome news. From Eannatum I have the strong indication that this Cairn of the Whisperers sits somewhere on the near side of the river, in the environs of the abandoned Lidish Mine. All their sites of interest are on the far side."

"Now you see, if the map reached here," Zummabu gestured just off to its side. "You would find the Lidish camp, gone these sixty years. Like Pit Lord Dourstone, Lidish preferred to keep his slaves away from Dalath and under close watch. I'm sure the quarters haven't survived, but the family lived there as well. They had a proper house. Something of it may remain and serve as a landmark for you. From there, I'm afraid you will have to search. Eannatum's letter tells only that the last discoverers thought the entrance quite near to, but not within, the mines. It may be worth your while to search the ruin there as well, in the event they used it as a shelter before whatever befell."

Taking in the opinions of everyone else, the elf nods and says "Leaving at first light sounds good to me as well. We can make for this house and make camp from there. How far of a trip is it to this site, sir?"

"Not more than half an hour's walk, I should think," Zummabu said. "Perhaps longer, but not by a great margin. The shadow of a trail remains, if you follow the stelae. Most of them should still stand, though I expect they've been much defaced."

Zummabu is referring to erect stones bearing Gilgeam's face, which are supposed to line every road and path in Unther at regular intervals. They're usually no more than waist-high and often have the face smashed or otherwise marred.

'I should go home and get my traveling gear then.' Tribim stands up and stretches, "Than I guess all that's remains is ta get a good nights sleep, what's left of it; an' head out in tha morning." tuning to Zummabu, "With your leave sir, I will go home and sleep for a few hours, gather my equipment and be back here by dawn ta head out." After the last few bits of discussion, Trib heads home, keeping a keen eye out to make sure he isn't followed.

In the morning he will be outside the compounds gates at sunrise, waiting for the party to leave.

Amarekashu nodded. "I shall eat, return to my chambers, and rest before the trials begin. Treasures and glory shall be found in the next few days, and I look forward to seeing how they fall." With a fluid motion and a flicker of the rich robes he wore, Amarekashi nodded with respect to Zummabu and went to rest, before arriving the next morning, munching on the remnants of breakfast.

He heads home for the night, watching for any signs of trouble.

Day 2: Flamerule 20 in the Year of the Worm. (2,090th year of Gilgeam's rule)

The morning came all too soon, and with it fresh lashings and prayers in the square. Today, Lord Teuman had two women tied to the posts and a somewhat larger crowd to watch the blood fly.

Across the street and a few doors down from Zummabu's tower, Arundel saw a man sitting up against a wagon wheel and nursing a bottle. He nearly passed the drunk over, especially as he seemed to be nodding. Then Arundel caught the drunk's eyes rise from his bottle just as the wizard passed.

Anyone else who wants can also just be coming up at the same time.

Dommer arrived in slow steps and steady pace. He patiently walked, arriving at first light. The Dwarf mostly ignored the Humans around - even the crowd, cheering to the blood - and focused on greeting the Elf.

Howdy, Elf. - he said, the voice still sounding as if he woke up only a few minutes before - I trust ya meditation went well?

Nodding to the dwarf as he approaches, Arundel replies "It is always a peaceful time, preparing for the day. I enjoy it thoroughly. And how are you, Dommer? You sound a bit tired yet."

Noticing the drunk, and particularly the drunk's gaze as he looks up, the elf pauses in consideration. (A bit early in the day for that level of drunkenness...) He motions to Dommer to wait just a second, and approaches the drunken man.

"Good morning, friend. Are you alright? Do you need any help?"

Paying close attention to any response

"Oh, I'm fine, sir elf. Bit too many, but the disease is its own cure," he held up his bottle amiably and slurred his words a little too well.

So the place were going isn’t to terribly far, at least were not going out into the deep desert.’ Relieved that they are not going so far from the city, Trib, ruck sack on his shoulders is in a pleasant mood until he sees the two women being beaten in the square. ’I hope someday this can be stopped.’

Nearing Zummabu’s compound he sees Arundel talking to what appears to be a drunk. ’that’s odd, I wonder what prompted Arundel to speak to a drunk.’ Trib steps in to the nearest doorway, hiding in the shadows and looks around for anything suspicious.

Namtar completes his morning exercises, as his is daily routine. Life as a gladiator is very regimented and precise, every day is much like the last, only the bouts in the fighting pits gives any sort of change to his life. Recently, though, that order has been upset. He will be leaving the city soon. The very thought excites and terrifies him. He's only just recently walked the streets of Dalath, and now he's to leave? His arm trembles at the thought. No. He will not think of such things. His master has commanded him to do this thing, and so he must obey. He girds himself in his leathers and weapons and then walks out to the edge of the grounds to greet his fellows adventurers.

He leans against the gatehouse, staring at the drunk. I don't like that man... there's something off about him. He's drunk, that might be it. I don't trust wine, not since my last master ordered me to drink from his cup. Still, I'd better stay close in case master's friends need my strength.

The elf looks dubiously at the man. "That's what I thought. Bit early to be this drunk, words slurred a little too good, and taking entirely too much interest in people. How about you tell me why you're really here?" As he is saying this, Arundel tenses and tries to position himself in a position to stop the man if he bolts.

The man sat still for a moment, looking at Arundel with suddenly clear eyes.

"Ain't worth my life or the coin to tell you what," the man said, voice lower than before. He showed no sign of spotting Trib.

"Got important friends!" the drunk said.

Regin doesn't see anything odd with the drunk.

Hearing Arundel name the drunkard as a spy, Namtar growls and marches forward. He forces himself to stare at the man, and ignore the press of people around him. The road was so EMPTY! And, anyone could have a weapon.
