"At least zey know when zey are bested yeah." Lu noted as she tried to spot the elementals as they melted away. "And welcome back!"
---
"I zink I can get back up on zat ledge. Zen I'll hammer a piton in and tie the rope for you - should be easy as cake yeah. Mm Janus would you kindly help me out of my armour again?" Lu winked and then looked up, gauging which way would be the easiest.
Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Chaïa Pomala |
Thank the goddess for people who know how to climb, Chaïa mused as Lucrecia zoomed up the chain to the passage above, disappearing to fasten a rope and throw it down so folks who needed a wall to brace against would have an easier time of it. Chaïa let the others go first, since it was enough that she would have to try to get a purchase in her soggy satin, rather than leave the rope slippery for everyone else. Also, let’s hear it for taking 10! I presume that’s not a problem? Making wizards climb is cruel and unusual punishment indeed.
Still, all things considered, despite having nearly been drowned, and even though decidedly more than damp at the moment, Chaïa seemed to have regained her good humour. As she got her bearings above, her face lit up as another errant idea crossed her mind. “Yes, that would do it!” she murmured brightly, waving her hand around as if to tidy up some invisible sum. “Loses a bit of sheer force, but considerably more reliable.”
“With due respect, certainly, O Moonlit Mystery,” she hastened to reassure an invisible interlocutor, before her attention snapped back to where the others were ready to proceed.
Lucrecia Willow |
The alcove hadn't changed much since the last time she was up there - no obvious ambushers at least - so Lu went straight to hammering down a piton somewhere and then securing the rope. Once that was done, she threw down one end of it for the rest to climb up on.
Janus Alistair Eden |
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Having helped Lu out of her armor, once again innocently brushing over her left breast as he did so, Janus stood and watched as she made her way up the wall. When the rope came down, he decided to let Chaia and Saeri climb first(they were, supposedly, lighter than him, plus he could soften a fall by interposing his own body between them and the floor - Janus was nothing if not gentlemanly), while he was staring at the girls butts. watching carefully for any signs of trouble during the climb.
When they reached the top, he climbed up himself, taking a look around. Squinting at the corridor, Janus repeated his earlier tactics of casting light on a small stone and throwing it down the hallway.
Saeri, Professional Harrower |
For what it was worth, Saeri had at least basic training in climbing - she was no master, but by taking it slow and steady, she was able to ascend without any particular trouble... and immediately took out a few more cards, just in case they'd be needed.

Yellowknife's explorers all made it safely to the top and found the darkness at the end of their light silently waiting for them.

"So, water elementals, an earth elemental...in an Auran tomb-thingie. You think there'll be air elementals trying to push us off the ledge next? Guess only one way to find out...", Janus marches off towards the darkness, leapfrog-kicking 2 small stones with light spells in front of him, shield and blade ready.

Catching up, Chaïa offered, “Well, that much I’m almost ready for, at least, though not an unexpected swim.”
She peered down the tunnel ahead, drawing her own sword just in case, before adding. “What about everyone else? Where did that ring go? It will help if there are any risky jumps to make, or if push comes to shove on the edge of a sheer drop.”

Janus sees some scratch marks in the floor, a few reaching all the way to the ledge, but marks nothing else as he starts down the tunnel. After some time, a huge face emerges from the darkness. His spell lights show a visage much like those the explorers have found below, but so large that it fills the tunnel's ten foot width wall to wall. It stares silently at them, hairless and with lips pressed shut and brow creased in an expression of firm disapproval clear even while much of it remains in shadow.
Saeri, Professional Harrower |
"Well, we probably don't have to make it laugh. Think the mouth can open?" Saeri inquired. She didn't draw a card to answer that question, though - it wasn't like she consulted the Harrow for everything.
Chaïa Pomala |
“One would hope,” Chaïa said, meeting the face’s disapproval with an impertinent moue of her own. She took a step closer and started looking for how that might work. Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

Thank you, the suspense was killing me. :)
Stepping ahead, Chaïa felt the stone beneath her feet give ever-so-slightly. The face came to live, the stone moving like flesh with the eyes flying wide open. Brilliant red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet light poured from them. The dazzling array held Janus and Saeri absolutely rapt. An instant later, the mouth opened and emitted a howl of outrage that echoed down the tunnel with a powerful torrent of wind at its heels. Already the four explorers could feel the force of the blast growing in intensity.

Round 1
"See? Zis is why you don't wish for silly zings!" Lu mumbled to herself as the statue *did* open its mouth. And caught them momentarily in its radiant display. Seeing as half their party didn't snap out of it as quickly as it came over them, Lu dashed infront of them and waved her arms. "Hey! Snap out of it! Don't make me slap you Janus even if you deserve it..."

Janus ALMOST manages to snap out of the light show, when suddenly Lu appears and starts...distracting him.
Unable to take his eyes off her, he stands there, gazing.
Chaïa Pomala |
Chaïa definitely appreciated the flash, the flair of the trap even as she felt a burst of irritation with the persistently unwelcoming design of the complex. She bent down a bit to peer into the gaping mouth, trying to see if the passage continued beyond, or, in any case, if she could stop whatever the face was doing. Taking note of the slight shift underfoot, she hesitated whether to step back or to try to jam the thing open.
If it’s clear that it’s not a nasty chomping trap – that there’s enough space behind the face even if the mouth closes again – Chaïa will jump through and see what that does, if it’s some sort of pressure plate thing that opens the mouth. If there’s no way forward, she’ll jump back instead to assess the situation. Either way, she’ll poke about to see if she can get the wind to stop, unless jumping forward gets her through but closes the mouth behind her. Disable Device: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Round 2
Seeing as Janus was still all glazed over and staring into a ancient giant face Lu quickly grew both irritated and worried. The howling wind didn't feel like something in their favour after all. I zink I know how zat guy earlier fell down ... But at least Saeri isn't a drooling moron anymore!
"Oh come on you knobhead! I know you want *zis* more zen some bright light!" she exclaimed and planted a kiss straight on his silly face. So silly.

She can use her action to drag Janus along and keep up the dance. Assume it's a bump & grind or something. You know Janus will. :)

Then, seeing as he finally started to come to his senses, she quickly pulled away. And then gave him a slap. "Zat's for making me do zat!" Maybe I should have opened with that instead? "Now let's find Chaïa..."
“Right here,” Chaïa pointed out, without turning around from where she was crouched checking for any other nasty surprises in the trap’s mechanism, poking around with picks and shims even as she let her trained instincts guide her hands to how she might also gum up the works of whatever spell the trap generated, without losing time on invoking a proper cantrip to trace the pattern of magic involved. (Or however we imagine disabling a magic trap works.)
“It will take me a moment to handle this,” she confessed. Catching a glimpse from the corner of her eye of how Lu was getting Janus to snap out of it, she decided the swordsfolk would probably take care of each other if it came to the worst. Takes all kinds, she mused, wondering what the Winsome Rose would think of it.
Setting aside theological questions for another distraction, Chaïa called back to Saeri over the rising wind, “That ring we found should lighten a fall. I’ll be fine, but you might put it on if you haven’t already.”
She forced her voice steady in an attempt to keep calm, knowing that success depended on not letting any one thing push her over the edge into panic. So that’s 2/4 rounds spent working on the trap, so far, and unless weird stuff happens, Chaïa will just keep at it.

Saeri took the ring and slid it on, crouching down a moment later to brace herself and try to resist the wind as best she could while the others got to work. Maybe there was something she could do with Prestidigitation...?

She could maybe clean the tunnel a little bit. Or put on a light show, but probably not one as fabulous as the face's.
Samnell |
Round 3
Janus came to his senses under Lu's tender ministrations as Chaia continued to work on the face and Saeri donned the ring of safe falling.
Yet still the wind mounted, becoming a driving force. If they were not already almost on top of the face none of the explorers could have approached. Even as they struggled against the wind, they felt their feet begin to slip backwards.
Wind is now Windstorm strong. You need a DC 10 STR check to get closer to the face. Ranged combat is impossible.
But everyone is functional, so there's that. :)
Chaïa Pomala |
Chaïa stayed where she was, continuing to work as carefully as she could with the blasting wind occasionally sending a stray lock of hair lashing across her face. Since she could hardly let go any of her fine tools in the gale, setting one or another on the ground as she looked for the right thing for each step of the job, she reminded herself to reorganize in a more logical order, or at least re-memorize, the picks and things she kept tucked in sleeves and bracers.
Janus Alistair Eden |
Janus had been frozen.
Did that just happen.
In a trance, he reached up to his face...the slap had been real...so...
Damn right I want that...
The situation was dire, but Janus had no idea what to do about the Face.
Might as well...
"I...I still feel a bit shakey...I think to fully throw off the curse I may need another afterwards.", he managed to state as he let Lu drag him along, quickly adding:"Kiss, not slap-"
Drawing a blank on what to do here, sorry...I hoped to come up with some idea, but my options are...limited.

Rounds 4-7
Chaïa finished her work on the mouth as the winds reached a still-greater force. For all her efforts, they showed no sign of stopping. She, Janus, and Saeri lost their footing at once and flew back, bouncing off the walls and ceiling of the tunnel as the wind carried them. An instant later, Lu followed their example.
Saeri tumbled bruisingly over the edge first, the blue glass ring coming to life as it caught her fall and she drifted gently to the ground below. Chaïa followed on so quickly she almost struck Saeri in midair, but then a quick casting of her own let her join the controlled descent just as Janus flew by and seized the chain to stop his own plunge.
Feeling Chaïa's Art settle over her, Lu tucked her arms and legs together and shot forward. She narrowly missed contact with the ground that would have spent the magic and instead pulled out just in time to join the other ladies in a calm plunge down the shaft.
Though the wind continued to howl with growing strength, Janus remained secure on his chain and the others firmly on the ground below.

Does Janus catch himself?
Ref DC 10: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 he does, so Lu can be Chaia's plus one. She's 20 feet out from Chaia at the time of fall, which is just barely in feather fall range.
I'm going to assume Lu feels the spell and stops trying to stop herself.
Saeri, Professional Harrower |
"Well, that was... uh.. that was something." Saeri said, wincing slightly after she landed. "I don't suppose anyone has a brilliant idea for stopping the wind?"
Janus Alistair Eden |
"Thank the gods, she's alive", Janus exclaims after making his way down and hearing the unconscious Saeri mutter something incomprehensible.
"You girls okay?", he turns to Lu and Chaia.
After confirming that they are, indeed, alive, if somewhat battered, he kneels down next to Saeri, placing one hand on her brow and the other on her breast as he incants a healing spell.

"Well ..." Lu remained laying on her back staring back at the ledge. Everything hurt. But thankfully - only the dull 'I'm beaten all over!' and not the sharp 'hey is this bone really supposed to be sticking out here?!'. At least they weren't in any immediate danger anymore. "Zat could have gone better yeah."
With a wince she sat back up and rubbed the back of her head. "Mm our options. I considered hammering down some pitons as ze wind picked up in strength but zat would probably only mean we would be mortared up zere instead. Smashing ze face with a maul, a little bit each time and zen retreating? Or maybe just try and walk past it when it is still weak? Both assuming zis doesn't go on forever but ... zat seems unlikely. A bit at least. Lastly -" She pulled out the ruffled Arun from the pocket where he had been hiding and helped him groom himself a little. "- we could simply find a way to beat ze wind. Making ourselves gigantic with magic would work but maybe not practical?"
Chaïa Pomala |
At least being wet meant that her hair wasn’t tangled too badly in the blast, Chaïa mused ruefully as she dusted herself off and tucked away the pick she still had clenched desperately in her hand throughout the whole fall. It was a small miracle that she had prepared appropriately for such an eventuality, and though Aerdrie Faenya wasn’t the aspect of the One and the Three to whom Chaïa was most devoted, she silently promised to give the Lady of Air and Wind more attention in future.
Catching sight of Saeri’s battered form, Chaïa was relieved (and not particularly surprised) to see that Janus had already hurried over to get the harrower back on her feet. Turning her attention to the problem that they were back at the base of the shaft again, Chaïa furrowed her brow in frustration. In answer to Lu’s questions, she offered, “That does sound sensible, but I’m afraid I wouldn’t know how to go about it. Transmutations are not my strongest suit. I wonder if there’s any hope that it won’t just reset?”
She perked up her ears to listen for sounds of the gale above, trying to determine if it was dying down.
Janus Alistair Eden |
"So, we got watery doom or aerial doom on the menu. Saeri, you mind handing Lu that ring for a moment? She could check if there's some reset timer on that wind channel, albeit I doubt it. If something kills the first explorer without a clue but can be easily bypassed by his body, that's not a very good trap....", Janus muses. Still, there was a chance. And it was a more charming idea than the potential underwater fight against water elementals in a flooded chamber.
Chaïa Pomala |
“Oh, how thoughtless of me!” Chaïa exclaimed, turning to rummage in her pack. “Now, where did those go?”
After exhorting the others, a minute of frantic searching turned up the odd pair of goggles the group had found the day before. Chaïa snatched them up with a mixture of triumph and embarrassment. Oops. I really had forgotten about the goggles of minute seeing we had found. “I should go up again too. With these, and if I leave some of my bulkier gear to fetch up after we’ve had a chance to look the passage over again, we might have better luck. And don’t worry – now that we have an idea what to expect, we’ll slither down the rope before it really starts blowing again, if we have to.”
If she sheds her improbably large bundle of stuff, puts on the silly goggles, and casts guidance, Chaïa will have a much better chance of disabling nasty devices, though it’s a question of how long it will take too.

You know it's only a few rounds until you get blown away. Chaia would have to roll pretty good on how long it takes. Still trying?
Lucrecia Willow |
"Hmph. We have to watch out zen - I zink earth or fiery doom is going to sting even more." Lu grimaced. She wasn't really looking forward to going up there again and potentially getting battered a second time but it was still probably better then drowning. And whatever terror the last two elements offered. "But if we are to try again you have to stop *before* the wind gets too dangerous yeah? Better to get a few short tries zen just one more before being slammed into ze walls!"
Chaïa Pomala |
Uh-oh. This is one of those GM “Are you sure you want to do that?” moments, isn’t it? :)
Any other ideas, intrepid adventurers? I don’t suppose we could hope to just bypass the trap, get through the door and slam it shut behind us? Or would that just mean we get slammed against a wall instead of off the edge?
“Well, if we put our heads together and catch our breath after this last fiasco, we might be able to figure something out for the water elementals, I’m sure. If any of us knew an enlarging spell or anything else that would help us keep our feet up above too, that would be lovely. As much as I’m grateful to our patron, I may just need to put a lien on his spellbook as long as he wants us to explore this place properly.”
I guess I’m willing to give it another go, and failing that, we slink back shamefacedly to Yellowknife again, try to find something to help us resist windstorms and deal with flooded rooms, call it an early day and try again tomorrow.

If I answer that question, it's no fun at all. Let's handwave her getting back up. There's a rope and the chain and all, so take 10 works. Gimme a disable device?
Also is Chaia going up by her lonesome?
Chaïa Pomala |
I suspected as much. Well, if she’s borrowed the ring of feather falling that’s one thing, but otherwise Chaïa wouldn’t mind if Lu’s around to cast the spell in case she miscalculates how much time she has to get clear.
Taking only the bare necessities – her tools, her dagger (just in case), the usual bits and pieces – Chaïa snapped the goggles around her head and clambered back up the rope. Once she got close enough to the trapped face to have to worry about setting it off again, she paused just long enough to murmur a quick prayer to Angharradh, expecting that she would need all the help she could get, “May the One and the Three guide me…”
She set to work. Disable device: 1d20 + 9 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 5 + 1 = 18 I guess it’s still 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 rounds for what Chaïa’s trying? If the trap’s still active, once it hits windstorm strength, even if the trap’s not disarmed, Chaïa will skedaddle, not looking forward to being blown down the passage again.
Samnell |
Chaïa borrowed the safefall ring and took a second try at the face. It came to life with its dazzling eyes again, brilliant and nearly enough to strike her wits from her head. Yet she persevered as the wind rose until nearly the point of being thrown backwards ere she turned into the wind and fled with it. The ring caught her and she descended to safety.

"So... that was a bust. Think we can get some sort of heavy barrier up there we can position between us and the wind?" Saeri inquired, thinking back and trying to remember if she'd spotted anything that could be useful. If they set it up and all worked together to keep it in place...

"Lu, could you try sending Arun to take a look? Specifically, I wonder if we can figure out what triggers the wind. He flies, and won't touch any floor or walls...if he could move past, we could assume it's some kind of pressure-plate, and see if we can do something about that-"
Not sure if we can brute-force our way through it...I fear we need to find a bypass of sorts...it's also putting on a light show, much like the prismatic spells. Maybe there's a similar method of shutting it down, using a couple cantrips or basic things to "disable" one color after the other, diminishing the wind force?

Not sure if we can brute-force our way through it...I fear we need to find a bypass of sorts...it's also putting on a light show, much like the prismatic spells. Maybe there's a similar method of shutting it down, using a couple cantrips or basic things to "disable" one color after the other, diminishing the wind force?
You also saw that fresco with the colors a ways back.

Her attempt to keep spirits up was sincere, but subdued by her frustration with her lack of progress and by her awareness that the first blast of wind could have ended much more nastily than it did. She mulled over the others’ suggestions. “There might be a way to put up a barrier, though I’d have to think about it a bit more. I know there are spells that would do it, but most of them are far beyond me…”
