Saeri's right eye widened slightly, and a moment later she sent a blast of the Evil Eye towards the beetle, fully intending to render it more vulnerable towards the other members of the group.

Round 2
Dodging the absolute worst of the caustic stuff, Chaïa fairly exploded in indignation, compressing more sharp Elven syllables into her outraged outburst than a couple of heartbeats should allow. “Dead genies, fine, they're historically interesting. Brute elementals, well, alright. But these goddess-damned beetles – HAVE – GOT – TO – GO!”

Remembering herself, she took a deep enough breath to calm herself to recite a battle prayer properly. “Archer of Love, guard us and guide our hands!” Gripping her morningstar more tightly, Chaïa trusted Hanali wouldn’t choose this moment to be literal-minded about their choice of weapons.

"What the...", Janus starts as he is being sprayed, his voice abruptly cutting off as the searing spray burnt on his skin. His weapon already in hand, he steps closer and furiously brings it down on the beetle: "I've had it with these mofo bugs in this mofo tomb!" He cut deep into the bug's carapace.

Lu circles around the front to see what the fuzz is all about - and what is producing that eye watering odour. And then to stab said source with her sword! "On it!" She stabbed into the beetle's head and its shell broke open. Where what passed for its brain ought to have been sat a shattered green gemstone.

That was quicker than expected. :)

"Huh. Zat's not what I expected..." Lu poked the gemstone with the tip of her sword. Maybe it made sense though - keeping a real beetle this size alive down in your tomb/dungeon/something must be hard right? I guess. After a quick sweep around the room she returned her sword pointing towards the dead gem-beetle and called out over her shoulder. "You okay? And hmmm - you zink we would get anything for zat gem even if it is broken?"

: )

Making sure the Beetle was dead, utterly and completely, extracting the gemstone and offering it to Chaia and Saerie, Janus suggested:"Magics, probably, either of you have an idea what this could be about? If not, we may want to take the evidence back to YK. Oh, and group hug!"
Calling on the powers bestowed upon him, Janus then releases a healing wave flooding through the chamber, closing wounds.

Saeri focused on the insect for a few moments, checking for any signs of lingering magic - compulsions, summoning traces, that sort of thing. There might not have been anything - or it might have been too faded to see - but it didn't hurt to check.

Saeri's arcane senses reveal the chill, sinking emanation of death magic and the cloudy tangle of mind-meddling.

Moderate necromancy & enchantment. The necromancy is in the depression around the shattered gem. The enchantment comes from the gem shards. Both are quickly fading.

The healing group hug was welcome, but nowhere near as exciting as mysterious beetle brain gems, and Chaïa quickly extricated herself to follow Saeri’s explanations of what she had found. The elf wizard considered the implications while eyeing the small beetles that still swarmed around the group dubiously. Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

The sheer number of the things was obviously unnerving Chaïa, who mused even more vaguely than usual as she eyed the nearest bug as if wondering if it would be satisfyingly spiteful or merely repugnant and futile to crush it under her heel. She really didn't fancy picking one up for a closer look, certainly.

"That's interesting," she said, before another harebrained idea took over. "On a perhaps unrelated note, wasn't there more of that orange stuff in the rooms we explored yesterday, with the mold and the elementals? I wonder what it is..."

"Unless all of these emanate a necromantic aura, I would suspect it's some form of replenishing nourishment. I don't believe it was originally intended as beetle food, but they don't seem to care much.", Janus comments, looking through the room to make sure no more of the large beetles were hiding, nor any nigh-collapsed areas to other parts of the hive where more of them could lurk.

The mold was a different color

Chaia thinks it likely that the gem was some kind of controlling influence on the beetle, which would explain the enchantment. She's less sure of the necromancy, but suspects that it may have either kept the beetle alive or helped whatever was in the gem keep physical control of the body.

Janu's search revealed three oblong lumps within the orange sludge, the skeletons of three humans in red leathers with an eight-pointed star on their breast. Little else remained of them, but he found three steel vials and a rune-etched pearl nearby.

Turning to the nest itself, he discovered a human hand that still bore emaciated, drawn tight flesh and wore a ring made of blue glass set with a red stone.

Loot:

3 potions CLW
pearl of power (1st level)
ring of feather falling

"We seem to be seeing these symbols a lot lately..." Saeri mused, leaving the loot for the others. That said, given the amount of climbing they had to do, that ring might come in pretty darn handy if they passed it between themselves.

Making an effort to concentrate on the issue nearer to hand, Chaïa focused on the monstrous beetle’s remains, but shook her head at how quickly the trace of magic on them was fading. “There’s not enough – mercifully, I suppose (Let’s hear it for not having to face mind-controlled beetles that have enough necromancy in them to refuse to die properly!) – for me to unravel everything neatly. At a guess, I would say, since insects don’t normally have enough personality for an enchantment to easily override, that it looks like someone used necromancy to enhance some charm on the gem. It’s not the sort of thing I’ve heard of, planting mind-controlling gems in creatures, so a rather deft refinement?”

There was definitely some grudging admiration in her voice. “Someone seems to have known what they were doing.”

Saeri, Professional Harrower wrote:

“Then again,” she added, upon hearing Saeri’s remark on the human remains in the sludge, “someone else seems to have been quite free with their staff. That letter we found mentioned thralls, I know, but to lose so many … they must have been extremely eager to find out exactly what’s in here.”

Chaïa fell silent as she wondered how many more star-marked corpses the group would find, and what that might suggest about the callousness of the poor dead souls’ leader or the threat the previous explorers had faced.

"Only zings with gems-for-brains I've met before were merchants from Amn - and zey seemed more zen happy to skin someone too. Maybe a common origin?" Lu suggested in jest. So until we start seeing piles of five or more we should be good to go! Unless, of course, we find where zey ran dry ..."

"Should we continue onwards? Zis seems like a dead end..." Lu concluded as she took an proper look around in the chamber.

Despite her best efforts, Lu found nothing else in the chamber worth noting. Satisfied, the explorers tried the southern hallway. Last place you haven't checked. They came in short order to a spot where two niches cut into the walls. Numerous pegs extended from the walls there, all of stone and angled sharply upward. All were bare.

Pressing on further, they came to the flight of broad stairs. They descended into clear water that filled the hallway.

"Well, I do know how to swim..." Saeri noted. She wasn't exactly a master of it, but if she wasn't in imminent danger, she could generally make her way through calmer waters without much difficulty. It'd be better if they could drain the water somehow, though... was there a mechanism for that? Tugging on the pegs, perhaps? They did look a bit like levers...

“I can more or less keep my head above water – when it’s calm, at least –” Chaïa nodded, “but depending on how this passage was cut, above might be precisely the problem.”

After a few moments of intense concentration, she admitted to herself that she couldn’t actually guess how this level might be arranged based on what the group had seen so far. Scuffling a toe over the ground of the hallway, Chaïa pried up a promising bit of debris, lit it with a cantrip, and sent it skimming at an angle into the water, trying to see how deep it went and if the water-filled space extended below where the passage closed down to follow the stairs. If no suitable pebble presents itself, she’ll use a copper or something. This isn’t one of those “need to hold your breath for an unpredictable length of time and of underwater passage” things, is it?

Chaïa peered down into the water before, as if making up her mind, starting to tighten the laces of her robes’ sleeves. She muttered in muted displeasure, “Air and earth yesterday, water today, and if we do get a chance to warm up, it probably won’t be entirely friendly…”

It will take a few moments before Chaïa gets herself sorted out, shucks her pack, and works up the nerve to explore the pool in more hands-on fashion, so if anyone’s got any ideas before the party has to deal with a rather wet elven wizard/priestess squelching around the rest of the dungeon in unhappily sodden sandals, now would be a good time. ;)

The copper plunks down into the water, lit by enchanted flame. It shows that the stairs descend only about ten feet, where the stairs seem to open into a chamber. There's no way to tell if there might be air beyond.

"Yeah, I'd rather not get set on fire." Saeri said with a sigh. "Shall we try swimming our way through, then? Or at least enough to try and get a sense for how long the passage might be?"

Safely leashed and equipped with a waterskin of air, Chaiawent into the water. She made good progress in the still, cold water. With the copper shedding light in her hand, she reached a narrow partition and went around the side. She found a chamber dominated by pillars of a tan stone, each bristling with spigots high on them. At even intervals about the floor, clumps of debris held fast to their spots.

Chaïa kicked vigorously forward, arching up to see if she could spot the tell-tale horizon of water meeting air above her. Or is the room flooded to the ceiling? Spotting the pillars’ spigots as her glance swept upwards, her instincts took over. While she still had a fair bit of air left, she swam up the side of the nearest pillar to see if the spigots were open. Accounting for why the room was filled? Or preventing it from draining? As her hand closed over the nearest spigot, Chaïa gazed around the room again, peering through the water to check for anything else suspicious.

Chaïa tried one of the spigots and found no help there at all. She could turn the valves either way and nothing changed. Moving on to the debris, she bent down and began to pull at the mix of dirt and stone. It was all stuck well to its spot, to the point where when she dislodged some she felt a current pulling it back into place. Chaïa caught a few glimpses of some kind of metal grate beneath the debris before she felt a great rush of water come up behind her.

Almost invisible, two watery creatures the size of halflings flowed up to within arm's reach. They had two arms, small whirlpools for eyes, and looked most displeased with her.

Maybe if we cleared that, Chaïa thought for a moment, before a sudden current warned her she wasn’t alone. She had the presence of mind to remember that trying to shout to scare the watery things off would be a bad idea, and silently cursed the luck that had brought a wizard with vocal incantations and no water breathing spell into her current predicament. She contented herself with waving her arms in what she hoped was an alarming gesture (Boo! Boo? Oh, she’s not the most terrifying thing anyone’s seen by a long shot.) before tugging twice at the rope around her waist and backing water as quickly as she could.

She contented herself with waving her arms in what she hoped was an alarming gesture before tugging twice at the rope around her waist and backing water as quickly as she could.

Up above, Saeri, Janus, and Lu felt the sharp tugs of alarm before the rope began to go slack as Chaïa swam above the elementals' heads but it was slow going and she barely cleared them before they reacted. One reached out and passed a watery hand over her flaming coin, but it had no power over elven magic. The other swam in a tight circle, creating a great whirlpool that dragged back at Chaïa and sucked her in. She spun wildly, rope tangling about her.

Chaïa isn't that heavy, but she is under water and that's a lot of drag. Also the rope goes around some corners. Let's say it's a DC 10 Str check to haul her a square toward safety. Every five points above that is another square. Hauling her this way is a full-round action.

"Oh darn!" Lu muttered under her breath and wondered what sort of trouble their mage had wandered (swam?) into. But regardless as to what it was not being there anymore would probably help. Let's hope she simply isn't stuck ... With a grunt she also grabbed the rope and started pulling.

Jauns followed their example and together the three hauled Chaïa through the water and up the stairs. She fresh air filled her lungs when he head broke the surface.

The yank was startling, but Chaïa wasn’t complaining as the tug pulled her past what she guessed were cousins of the creatures they met yesterday. She redoubled her efforts to get herself back. Chaïa regained her footing just in time for the water creatures to reach up and seize her legs from below.

With new air in her lungs, she recognized the creatures as water elementals. They were very dangerous in their native habitat, but much less so to people standing on solid ground.

Rules Stuff:

Janus Yanks: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10 no love. Total 3 squares for Chaia.

Wet guys move up and grapple. Note: they are still underwater. Chaia isn't armed at present, so they don't provoke from her.

CMB1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
CMB2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Chaïa is grappled: –4 penalty to Dexterity. A grappled creature takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and combat maneuver checks, except those made to grapple or escape a grapple.

Chaïa's breath: 24/24

Wet guys are underwater, which means they have total cover vs. mundane attacks from on land. Magic could still get them, provided it doesn't need an attack roll. If you want to hurt them with fire, it's a caster level check (DC 20) to get it to work.

Order is Chaïa, Wet Guys, Saeri, Lu, Janus. Everyone is up!

Well then! Their mage seemed a bit wet but not much worse for the wear - yet. Better get her out of the water! Lu reached out to try and get a hold of the mage proper, but couldn't quite get a firm hold. [b]"Dammit!"

Drag vs CMD 11: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

I think Chaïa is flanked as well so she won't be getting any AoOs to fend off the drag :P Not that it even hit ... >.>

Saeri continued dragging, but the effect of the grappling meant she ended up heaving at the wrong time - and was entirely unable to pull their friend closer to safety.

Much as she was vain enough to rather like the idea of being a girl folks would fight over, this was not quite what she had in mind, Chaïa reflected ruefully, trying to keep panic at bay as she felt the rope around her waist pulling one way, and watery hands around her legs pulling another.

“Get back!” she just had time to shout before being pulled off her feet before she had a chance to explain her plan.

Hmm. I’m not sure this is going to work. Chaïa will try to use her school power, shift, to teleport out of the grapple. Problem is, she’s currently got a truly astounding range of 5’, so unless we assume Janus or Lucrecia did step back, I’m not sure it’s going to work. I also don’t know if, as a supernatural ability, as opposed to a spell or spell-like thing, Chaïa needs to make a concentration check. If so, here it is: Concentration: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 (vs. DC 10 + grappler's CMB+ spell level, whatever that would be?)

Failing that, I guess Chaïa will try to break the grapple and drag herself out of the water the old-fashioned way, trying to get at least just behind the party’s front line. Combat maneuver check: 1d20 ⇒ 11 Yikes!

Strenght: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9

Realizing something tugging on their wizard below the surface, Janus did not let go of the rope, instead trying to pull Chaia further to safety - with little success:"Something mighty powerful is trying to pull her under. I would pull harder, but I'm afraid we'd tear her apart!" Yeah, no, he's not a strong guy... - but you can assume that holding on to the rope, he moved back while holding on, to get it stretched again and be able to apply force to it meaningfully.

Round 3

“Get back!” she just had time to shout before being pulled off her feet before she had a chance to explain her plan. She called on all her magical training and slipped between spaces, suddenly free of the elementals and standing on dry land.

They vanished back into the depths.

Rules Stuff:

Ok, so new situation. This is a tug of war, at least for as long as the elementals can maintain their grapple. Let's say it's the party's best str check plus bonuses from aid another vs. the elementals' str check. Every 5 points either way moves Chaia a square.

So let's do that now, to cover last round.
Ele1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Ele2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 so a 7.

Janus' 9 is the best, since no one else beat the DC 10 to aid another. Looks like she's basically still in place.

The Shift, then. It's Su, so no AoOs. Does it need concentration? I don't think so, since it's not Sp. So she gets her 5 feet. That puts her on solid land and out of the grapple. Bummer.

The bad guys take a powder.

I would have drowned her too, if not for those meddling school powers!

Saeri let out a sigh of relief as Chaia got onto dry land - but she kept a few cards ready to fling in case the elementals decided to come back.

Chaïa winced a bit as she caught her breath, as her inhalation tested the bruising caused by the rope that had saved her life. As she turned to face the others, she reflected, not for the first time, that it wasn’t the being wet part that made looking graceful and elegant, as a priestess of Hanali should be, difficult. It was pretending the water dripping from one’s robes and pooling at one’s feet was perfectly normal.

Still, she did her best. “Thank you,” she said simply, letting how close things got speak for itself. Scurrying wetly away from the flooded stairs, she threw a cautious look back, and offered, “I think we can hope they won’t follow us. They’re water elementals, so breathing aside, they’ll have an advantage over us in their own… well, element. It looked like there were some fountains or something down there, and quite a bit of litter. I thought I saw some grates underneath. Could someone have stopped them up? Even the elementals themselves, getting restive after who knows how many centuries, exactly?”

She considered a limp sleeve absentmindedly. “I think it might be best after all to check the long passage we found above yesterday and talk to Yellowknife before we try to sort these out.” Preparing a shopping list of spells as we speak! Yay! An excuse to fill her spellbook! I’m trying to resist the impulse to make awful jokes about wizards’ dreams.

The moment Chaia got back on dry land, Janus starts an incantation...only to have the water elementals vanish again before it is done:"Curses, they are fast, too."

Tried to use Command: Approach on one of them...forcing them on dry land would have been much preferable...

You're second level now. Have fun.

With Chaïa's dignity somewhat restored, the explorers head back to the sarcophagus chamber and come to the end of the blue tunnel. There the fallen skeleton still sits. Up above, at least forty feet high, there looked to be some sort of ledge or shelf. The easiest way up would be to climb the lantern's chain.
