Changing the background a little since at this point women can't join the knights.

Do you have the background written up somewhere? I'll mention your character in the backgrounds for Thomas & Caitlyn in their next (and probably final) revision.

What I am thinking is that she is the granddaughter of a knight, born of a dalliance between her mother and a Qualanesti Elf when the mom came to Solace and the surrounding area. Mom was rejected when she came home pregnant and it was even worse when she had a half-elf child. The Knight of the Rose was not too happy with that at all but "cared" for the mom and his grandchild. When the mobs came to destroy the holdings he sent the daughter and granddaughter to Solace in hopes that the dad would take care of the small family. If you were Solamnic maybe your family came with them and she was childhood friends from the moment they knew each other? They played together but she was never physically strong and she matured a little slower than a human child would. Maybe this is part of why he is protective of her?

They grow up together and your family might have taken her in when her mom finally died. She has always been more scholarly from the time she was a child and loved her books and had a faith in the goodness of humanity despite not being wanted by either culture. Maybe he and his sister traveled with her back to Solamnia on the 5 year journey and they came back dishearted. (Not sure if the sister and the mage went) When she came back she wanted to give herself to something more like the Seeker faith and she was mistreated there as well.

How does this sound?

That sounds great, I'll update Thomas & Caitlyn later.

Here's an updated version of Thomas. Caitlyn is unchanged (post #63).

Thomas Weissman:

Thomas is a man in his prime, about 6 foot, with blue eyes, flaxen hair and an immaculately shaved chin. Looking at him you can tell he can handle himself, and the sword on his back isn’t for show, yet his ready smile and laugh is disarming. In times of peace he would usually wear riding leathers, but of late he’s been sporting a battered and much loved breast plate and matching sabatons. There have been bandits and worse about, and on more than one occasion in the few months, Thomas has been called to defend the tree top homes of Solace. He had been a part time member of the watch for some years, assisting the sheriff when times were hard.

Often a fixture in the Inn of the last home, but never much of a drinker, Thomas liked nothing better than to hear and retell stories of derring do and knightly glory. Yet behind the bonhomie there was a sadness. He dearly wanted to travel like his brother and sister had, and seek his destiny, yet it was his duty to stay. Somebody had to look after mother and father, and tend the farm. They were getting old now, and the debts to pay for Justin’s tuition where ruinous, and the seekers constantly harassed them and his childhood friend Mariel Uth Kaldar. She had been taken in when her mother had died, poor thing had been rejected by her elven father. The family could ill afford another mouth, but it was the right thing to do, ”Charity is next to godliness.” his father always said.

Thomas had spent every hour given to him, toiling away on this job and that where anyone needed heavy labor, whittling down the family debt a little each day. But half of what he earned was given over to the seekers, taxes made sense but what they charged was usurious and for what? Precious little as far as he could tell. It wouldn't have been so bad but trade wasn’t what it was and the price his brother had paid was beyond reckoning. It had nearly killed his mother to see Justin like that, and his father had become withdrawn and distant as if his dreams had died.

Still Thomas was determined to pull the family out of penury, forge a peace as best as he can with his wild sister Caitlyn and follow his dreams to become a knight. A real knight of Solamnia. It would he hard for a commoner but his family were from Solamnia, nevermind they were chased out by a mob, surely the knights would see the merit in his application. He could ride well and was better at the sword and lance. He knew how to take proper care of his mount and his kit. He knew all the regulations, and he lived for the stories where the shining knights in the armor save the day through honor and valor. The stories he shared with Mariel where knights are selfless paragons. He would head out into the world with Mariel and find the truth.

If selected I think it would make for a great (and tragic) story if his family got killed for either standing up to Hederick The Theocrat, or perhaps by the invading Red Dragon Army. This would give a logical reason for him to swear an oath of vengeance.

Thomas Weissman combat vignette (probably a few levels later):

Ahead where several Sivak Draconians, Thomas had been trailing them for days. Able to sift into the forms of their slain victims, the Sivaks were posing as soldiers hoping to infiltrate and sabotage the supply train that was winding it’s way up the mountain from the valley below. Each was a vicious combatant, armed with a wicked sawtoothed blades, scythe like claws and a prehensile armoured tail.

It was now or never, everyone in the caravan would die unless Thomas acted. Keeping low, he crept out of the forest and lightly ran across the gap to a small hillock. Fortune was with him, he was downwind they wouldn’t notice him before he was ready. Thomas could move stealthy when needed, but it was dishonorable to attack an unaware foe. A few feet behind, he bellowed his challenge and salute, “Est Sularus oth Mithas!"

Both of them jumped slightly and veered into their hideous Draconian forms. Before they could react further Thomas was upon them, swinging his blade around in a wide arc forcing the first to back up. The second charged in and at the last moment, Thomas swung aside, his blade whistling as it describing an arc intersecting the the monster’s neck. Such was the force of the bow and the anger of his god, that the head came neatly off with a look of surprise.

Thomas’s moment of victory was short lived for the first Sivak had run him through from behind. The wound burnt like a shard of molten fire, and Thomas’s face was contorted in pain. He gasped and lurched forwards unsteadily as the monster ripped out the serrated blade. With his free hand he tried to staunch the flow of blood and whispered, ”Kiri-Jolith!” Instantly a faint radiance enveloped his hand and there was a momentary feeling of coolness and pulling as the skin reknit below his hands.

Acknowledging the score with a half bow, it was without rancor he cried his salute, “Est Sularus oth Mithas!" The draconian knew a moment or fear and doubt, it wasn’t supposed to be like this! It leapt forwards snarling and Thomas parried it’s blow and danced aside from a powerful tail lash. Cutting low, he took the things leg off and followed up with a blow transfixing it with his blade. The creature screeched it’s defiance but the blow was a mortal one and it sagged and stirred no more.
Stripping off his pack and pulling out a shovel, Thomas remarked to nobody in particular, ”I hate this bit.” In death the Sivaks had one last vicious surprise, they turned into the image of their slayer. Thomas had to buy himself twice over...

Do we have a list of all of the characters that have been submitted so far?

Talinthal Uth Mondor wrote:

I haven't made one. Here's an effort. I'm only counting PCs I have stats for:

Mariel Uth Kaldar half-elf cleric of Paladine (eventually)
Jakun Stormhoof minotaur wizard (transmuter)
Thomas Weissman human paladin (oath of vengeance, one of Fangdragon's)
Caitlyn Wiessman Human barbarian (superstitious, one of Fangdragon's)
Justin Weissman human wizard (one of Fangdragon's)
Gavin Carroway, human cavalier (inspiring commander who I totally did not forget about ask anybody)

Plenty of other ideas heard, of course.

He was on the list. Really. You've got to believe me. Yeah, that's the ticket.

What about the kender?

Sovereign Court

Seems we lack a "Skulldugger" in the group. I am willing to make such a character for the game. How does a a Kender Investigator sound?

Sounds good to me, I like the inspiration mechanic too.

Talinthal Uth Mondor wrote:

The kender rogue's stats aren't done yet, so he didn't make the list.

Dreaming Warforged's application: Tania Teg. She's a slayer (sniper, stygian slayer) focussing on range attacks and skill monkeyism.

Let me know if you have questions or comments. I'd be happy to coordinate backgrounds with other players if the character gets selected.

Thistletorp Babblebrook (Dragonofashandflame's guy) reporting for pocket exploration and item protection!

Background:
Thistletorp Babblebrook grew up in Solace. He never really knew his parents. They died in an attack by hobgoblins while traveling. But, that's how life is, right? It wasn't a really big deal, anyway. Sure, it was sad, and he was upset. He loved his parents, after all. But, they were dead, and he couldn't change that. Besides, he had all his friends in Solace to keep him company. As he grew up, the wanderlust took him and he felt the pull of the unknown. He loved exploring and discovering things. Every hill was a new treasure, no matter how many times he'd seen it before. There was always something new to see or find!
When his friends decided to travel Ansalon to find evidence of the gods, Thistletorp leaped at the chance. After all, he'd only seen Solace, there was bound to be something amazing to see! And there was! There was a half-ogre! And a Minotaur! With horns! They became fast friends, as good as any he had back in Solace. When it was nearing time to return to Solace, he made sure his new friends came along.

[ooc]Pretty embarrassed by the small bg, actually. But, I figger I'm supposed to work in with 2 others, and i didn't want to step on toes.[/oob]

Thistletorp:
I will send you a PM re Background :-)

No hoopak or chapak?

Sovereign Court

Crap, someone beat me to it. Oh well...

You could still make another kind of kender or character, High God.

Talinthal Uth Mondor wrote:
No hoopak or chapak?

Hoopaks aren't considered light weapons. Thus, they're not useable with finesse training from Unchained Rogue.

it's unfortunate to not have a hoopak-wielding kender. But, thems the breaks.

Simple weapons? Quarterstaff, sling and spear?

Talinthal Uth Mondor wrote:

The hoopak's rules essentially say "use it as one of these weapons". Slings aren't melee so finesse isn't pertinent for them. Neither a staff nor a spear are light weapons in PF. Nor are they on the list of non-light weapons covered by weapon finesse. So I ruled that it doesn't qualify.

I'd be open to a custom feat that let you finesse a hoopak, though.

That is kind of sad but then again I don't think that I have ever really heard of a hoopak master kender running around. I do like that they count as simple weapons for kender.

If you wanted to use the hoopak, does it have to be a dex based build? It always feels like going that way is fighting against the grain so to speak.

That is a good question.

FangDragon wrote:

I don't see why. It's a melee weapon. Unless you need the Dex for something else, like rogue skills or an archery-oriented build, no reason not to use it with regular strength.

It would be neat to see a kender weapon specialist in one of their weapons. I always liked the chapak better for some reason than the hoopak.

When are we looking to start the game? I am really excited!

Not if I can help it.

AH!
This whole time I thought I was 100% done, but I forgot about the fluffies!

The Fluffies:

History
Gavin is the son of Mariner Kallos Carroway and his Herbalist wife, Saria. Often moving to wherever the money takes them, the Carroways were well-seasoned travelers. Saria became pregnant, and Kallos decided to settle in where they were: the Minotaur Isles. It was an odd place to raise a human child, but the Carroways managed to eke out a living and provide Gavin with a strong upbringing that put equality and acceptance above all else.

Kallos soon introduced little Gavin to his fellow mariner and drinking buddy Karsh Stormhoof, whose son, Jakun, was around his same age. The two quickly became best friends and were rarely seen apart. From ages 6 to 16, the two were their town's resident mischief makers, always searching for laughs but never to harm others. Gavin liked to think of himself as the more mature one, who watched over Jak-Jak and backed the runt up whenever he got them in trouble. When playing, Jakun was the wily wizard, and Gavin, his sworn protector.

Nearing his 17th year, Gavin received news that left him heartbroken. While working at sea, Kallos was dealt a considerable blow that nearly broke his back in two. Unable to continue the strenuous work, aging Kallos decided that the family would move back to Saria's familial home of Solace, where they could take over her family's business. Gavin wasn't sure what to make of it. He'd never lived anywhere where he wasn't the outcast. Living among humans? It was a preposterous idea to him, and he dreaded it. He also dreaded leaving his best friend, who he had grown so close that he considered him a brother. Without any other options, Gavin had to go.

In Solace, Gavin was constantly picked on, made fun of for what they saw as outlandish Minotaur culture. His late teen years were rough. Constantly in fist-fights, Kallos was worried that the boy would ruin their reputation and business. Unable to afford any sort of formal schooling, Kallos sent him to live with Saria's brother, Tov, who had gone to (and graduated) from a school of magic, though he failed the tests in Wayreth.

Recognizing his inherent brightness and a natural talent in physical activities, Tov taught him the basics of spellcasting, enough to recognize which gestures are used for what spells. To hold his interest, Tov would incorporate swordplay into his lessons, reciting incantations while the two sparred.

Now in his mid-twenties, Gavin is growing restless in Solace. Strangely enough, a chance meeting with his old friend may change Gav's life for ever.

Appearance
Gavin is as ordinary as ordinary can be. Medium height, medium length hair, brown eyes, a typical, unassuming smile, a decent tan that wouldn't draw too much attention from many places. When it comes to appearance Gavin is the epitome of normal. That all seems to change when in combat though, almost as if he were under possession. His features become more pronounced and he carries himself much differently. See Image

Personality
Gavin is kind-hearted and accepting of everyone, so long as they don't give him a reason not to be trusted. He sees himself as a guardian of those he considers his friends and loves to be in good company. While out drinking with friends, he holds back so that he could be sober enough to get them home safely. He tends to put others before himself, sometimes to his detriment.

And to make things easier,

Gavin Carroway, an Order of the Staff Inspiring Commander

If Tov failed the Test of High Sorcery then he died.

Talinthal Uth Mondor wrote:

Sounds like Uncle Tov is a damn liar then.

Lol

I said I could go to six and I had six players with completed submissions. That works.

The party shall be:
Mariel Uth Kaldar half-elf cleric of Paladine (eventually)
Jakun Stormhoof minotaur wizard (transmuter)
Caitlyn Wiessman Human barbarian (superstitious)
Gavin Carroway, human cavalier (inspiring commander
Thistletorp Babblebrook, kender rogue
Tania Teg Human Slayer (Stygian Slayer, Sniper)

I'll get the discussion set up with some canon notes and housekeeping matters.
