1 was the island of fake treasure and certain death. 2 was death by chitterlings if not by falling. 3 is death by falling, probably. If you're lucky, if you're not lucky whatever is below will eat you.
Peering over the edge, Caitlyn told the others in a harsh whisper, "So then we go down past the chitterlings to whatever is in the abyss below. We must drive pitons into the wall and descend via rope."
It was possible her earlier exploration had alerted whatever was below, so a little nervously she listened before making her new decent. This time she had found several cunning places to attach pitons and soon had a long length of rope snaking down into the abyss below.
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
Carefully but efficiently she started to descend.
Climb: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Jakun Stormhoof |
Jakun sighs and nods, "Come Thistle".
The Minotaur Wizard casts fly and allows Thistle to "hitch" a ride. He will descend at the same rate as Caitlyn, there to guard her and aid her should she slip.
Once they all reach the bottom, Jakun will fly back up and aid the others in a similar fashion.
Samnell |
Caitlyn climbed down, with Jakun and Thistletorp descending alongside. It made for slow going as she hammered pitons in place and lowered herself inch by inch. They passed clear of the chittering place, where Caitlyn could see movement within.
At length, she reached the bottom. The remnants of several collapsed floors formed a mound of melted slag and rubble. Girders and chunks of rock jut from the mound like giant, gnarled hands reaching upwards. At the center of the mound was a funnel-shaped hole. She, the minotaur, and kender barely touched ground before some of the loose rubble began to shift as if something moved beneath.
Caitlyn Weissman |
"There's something under there!" cried Caitlyn in alarm as the mound shifted. Anxiously gripping her hammer, she stepped in front of Jackun and Thistle. Whatever it was would have to come through her first!
Perception can she see it? Can she see it?!: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22

Caitlyn can tell that the things beneath the rubble are roughly human-sized and struggling against the weight, but she catches the glint of old steel and a few bits of stark white bone as they begin to extricate themselves. There are at least six and she thinks they will be free before the carefully descending companions could reach her.
Jakun Stormhoof |
Jakun grimaces, "I can fly us up out of their range but then we will still have to deal with them when we come back. I say fight now".
If Caitlyn agrees to fight, Jakun wil cast Stoneskin on himself. If not, he will fly her and Thistle back up, at least out of the creatures' range.
Caitlyn Weissman |
Caitlyn blanched at Jackun's words but held firm, they weren't here for a pick nick after all... She grips her hammer so hard you hear her metatarsals creak and grind. "Bring it on!" she mutters. Any buffs welcome, before Caitlyn goes all I don't like magic.

Round 1
As Jakun casts a warding on himself, the skeletons burst free from the rubble. Each wears a suit of chain and wields a heavy axe. Pinpricks of hateful red light flicker in their eye sockets and the moan as they raise their arms and start forward:
"Free us. Destroy the circlets..."
Inits!
Skele: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Thistletorp: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 never flat-footed
Order is Thistletorp, Jakun, Skeletons, Caitlyn. Thistle and Jakun are up! Anyone intervening from above will come in at the top of the round.

Round 1
Jakun will cast Enlarge Person on Caitlyn as she will be the only warrior standing against these foes until the others arrive.
Thereafter, he will attempt to locate these "circlets".
Heroic Surge for extra action to search the area as best he can while being attacked! Let me know if I need to make any rolls here.

Mariel recalls tales of cursed undead bound by black robe wizards, who control them by holding items of power. They could be freed by placing the correct item in their possession or by destroying it, but short of that they were thralls to the last person to hold the things. She believes they would be powerful warriors, with a cunning and skill beyond that of mere skeletons.
Loren uth Brasel |
Lol. 300' feet. Just a small step.
Loren will be moving down the shaft, using the stairs where they appear safe and relying on the pitons and otherwise using the ropes and climbing tackle deployed by Caitlyn and the others.
Have him arrive whenever you feel is appropriate.

Caitlyn Weissman wrote:Samnell are there any obvious circlets visible? There are not. It's a very un-fabulous ruin. The little black robe is a classic but Jakun has no idea how to accessorize.
Pretty sure that's true for Caitlyn too. Armour is her fashion statement, and if she was to accessorise it would be by clutching a hammer rather than with a clutch bag... Of course will her physique you kinda get away with these sorts of things. The black robe is a sparrow by comparison, doesn't eat enough with an unhealthy jaundiced appearance. As for the novelty hourglass contact lenses, what was he thinking?! ;)

Can I cast Detect Magic with my Heroic Surge action in Round 1 and use that in conjunction with a Perception check? - Perception (in case I need it) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21. As we don't know they asre not there 'till I look, I suppose the Round 2 option will be to retreat up by lifting Thistle and Caitlyn, especially if Caitlyn cannot drop one this Round.

No reason you can't perc in the same round as you detect magic, I think. But detect magic takes a few rounds to play out. First round is going to show you that there is magic in the AoE, because Jakun and Caitlyn at least both have some on them. You need round 3 for locations of auras.
Jakun Stormhoof |
Fair point, well as the items are not there my Perception shows me nothing. So my Round 1 is over! I will cast Detect Magic as part of my Heroic Surge.
Caitlyn Weissman |
Er Sorry I kinda forgot we where in rounds.
Holding her hammer tightly, Caitlyn nervously steps in front of Jackun and waits for the undead to approach.
Move action: Stand in front of Jackun.
Free action: Rage
Swift action: Lets engage dragon style in case they have nasty abilities.
As the undead approaches, Caitlyns hammer whistles through the air before smashing into the closest one with incredible force!
Hammer time: Rage, Power attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 31Damage (+1 from axe to grind) If they have any SLAs that's +2 more from witch hunter: 1d12 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 16 + 1 = 22

Looks like I can't read my own posts and thought I needed Caitlyn for a while when I didn't. I'll resolve through her anyway unless something radically changes.

Round 1
Mittens rushed down the stairs, but the treacherous, twisted metal shifted under his weight and the minotaur's feet flew out from under him. He clattered and fell ten feet before his hands found purchase and stopped his uncontrolled descent.
Loren moved down the shaft, using the stairs where they appeared somewhat safe. He managed only a few steps before his own weight shifted the stair out from under him, but luckily grabbed a railing as he went down and arrested his fall as soon as it began.
Thistletorp pops out from Jakun's pockets. {b]"Hiya! I'm back!"[/b] Then he stabs at the monsters. His blade landed, but did far less damage than it might have as it flashed clattered about the dusty bones.
Jakun cast a divination and looked about for the skeletons' circlets, finding nothing with his eyes and only sensing magic from somewhere -it could even be Thistle or Caitlyn- with his spell.
Two of the skeletal warriors converged on Thistletorp, one slashing him across the shoulder as he dodged the other. The remaining three rushed toward Caitlyn and Jakun.
Mittens descends. Climbing is a move action, so he can do two a round. If he just goes as-is, that means a descent of 10 feet per round (quarter move rounds down to 5, twice) for 20 rounds to go 300 feet. If he does accelerated climbing, he can upgrade each move action to half his normal speed, so 15+15. 10 rounds. The first 270 feet are DC 10. After that he's out of stairs and needs to scale the wall, which is DC 20. Harder but he's a tough guy.
Climb DC 10: 1d20 + 4 - 5 ⇒ (2) + 4 - 5 = 1 oh dear, that's a fail by 5 or more. Mittens falls off the stairs. He has three chances to grab on with a Ref DC 15. Each fail gets him 1d6 falling damage, unless he fails them all in which case it's a lot more.
Grab!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Grab!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 Grabbed!
Falling damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
10 feet down.
Loren. Same rules.
Climb DC 10: 1d20 + 2 - 5 ⇒ (5) + 2 - 5 = 2 Same result!
Grab!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 no damage, no progress
Thistlestab: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10, 5
Sneak: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 1) = 13
Skele for Thistle
Chop: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 miss
Damage: 1d12 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18
Another
Chop: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 hit
Damage: 1d12 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15
The others move in
Mittens at -10 feet, 290 to go.
Loren at 0 feet, 300 to go.
Order is Mittens, Loren, Thistletorp, Jakun, Skeletons, Caitlyn. The party is up! Anyone from above coming in comes above Mittens.
Loren uth Brasel |
LOL! Loren really seems to be vertically challenged. Can't keep his feet under him to save his life. Literally.
After Mittens... Loren pulls himself up then continues his descent. I need to put some glue on these boots or something. At least I have my talisman if the worst happens...
If the worst does happen, Loren has a greater talisman of beneficial winds. Once per day, if he falls more than 5 feet, it activates feather fall.

Sorry the site was down last night for maintenance, couldn't post.
Samnell did Caitlyn's readied action not fire? I think she should also have gotten an AOO from the one NW of Jackun because it passed through a square she threatened.
Caitlyn shouted, "Fly Jackun. Let me deal with these!" She then lightly stepped back and headless of the danger she was in swung her weapon in a great arc aiming to smash the ones at the rear!
Hammer time, Primary: Rage, Power attack, Reckless abandon: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33Damage (+1 from axe to grind), if they have any SLAs that's +2 more from witch hunter: 1d12 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 16 + 1 = 20
Hammer time, Iterative: Rage, Power attack, Reckless abandon: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19Damage (+1 from axe to grind), if they have any SLAs that's +2 more from witch hunter: 1d12 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 16 + 1 = 22
Both those attacks are at the one NW of Jackun (I'm assuming he flew up so there's no soft cover). If that goes down she'll aim attacks at the one NE.
