We're about to embark on our first fight, so I'd like to get out ahead of some logistical things. Therefore:

Fun Time Combat Talk
Like I said way back in Recruitment, I'll be managing fights via Roll20. It's a virtual tabletop and totally free. Here's the map. This will always be the current map link and will soon be up top of every game page. You will need an account to look, I think, but it's fairly painless. Two days I can make it more painless, since I've got to approve you for the campaign anyhow.

1) I can have the site sent you an invitation email. You'd just have to give me an address.
2) You can use this link:

Super-Secret Game Time Fighting Fun Link:

The second is probably slightly faster, but either way is fine.

Once the setup is done, it's pretty intuitive. I don't do anything fancy like run character sheets through Roll20, just the maps and running hp totals. If there's a condition, spell effect, or so forth on only some characters I'll mark it with some kind of icon on the token.

I think it's all self-explanatory, but I'm used to looking at it. :) The green bars are your hp. The pale greenish blobs are solid ground. The blue is water. The brown rectangle is the tree. For convenience, I've just put the scouty-scouts and the tanking brigade in little groups. Mariel and Jakun, who per the plan hang back, I've put out over the water just to have the tokens on the map. They're abstractly a round back.

Confusing? Good? Thinking about exquisite ways to flay me alive?

In the near future, measured probably in minutes, I'll start putting up dice macros in the Campaign Info tab. Simple, prewritten commands for the rolls that come up often: perception, initiative, saves, etc. They're mostly for me, but you're free to copy and paste off of them if you like. I can't stop you and will sit in a dark room and cry about my cosmic impotence at a later date. If you'd like, transmute my angst into your pleasure. Players are usually into that. ...and the dice stuff is all up now.

How do I move and is the Tania still in the game?

Gay Male Inhuman

Between my French and a very small bit of Latin, I understand the other post. :)

Mariel Uth Kaldar wrote:

I need to associate your account with the correct PC. I've done that now, so you're free to drag and drop her around the map.

Tania is still in the game, but her player is away from the internet until Monday morning.

The half-elf is immune to sleep but is there a way she can fake that she is asleep, fall into the muck and hide?

She can try Bluff and Stealth. Bluff for the sleep faking and stealth to slip away to a hiding spot once she's off the radar.

In anticipation of very reasonable concern:
The Companions ducked a couple of fights back in Solace and resolved subsequent encounters without violence, which unfortunately put them up on one that was pitched quite a bit harder for the first real clash of arms. That's less than fun, I know. I've been on the receiving end of a maiden fight gone wrong too. :( I ought to have scaled things back a mite. The opposition are fighting to capture rather than kill, so there's that.

However, the draconians have no idea where Thistletorp or Tania are. Tania's asleep right now, but she's not going to get caught while slumbering. They had their chance to find her. Right now they don't have a way to get Jakun down either. That's a good start on a rescue party. Mariel might yet end up captured, but we'll see. I'll set Goldmoon up however makes the most sense at the time.

Some Thoughts on Languages
It occurred to me just now that I've been using Ansalonian languages and I don't think that I ever gave out a list of them. I'm likely to keep on doing so. The distinction between the draconians who spoke Draconic and those who speak Nerakese, as well as those who answered back with Misspelled Ethiopian when taunted, is one I thought a bit about in world terms before making. Code-switching for the win. :) But the intent is to give flavor, not shut anyone out.

Not sure if that was an issue for anybody, as there are lots of lists online for this kind of thing, but in the event that it is then here are some reasonable accommodations.

1) If it fits with your backstory, you can retrofit your language list.

2) You can always take a rank or two of Linguistics to pick up some useful ones, which would model picking it up as we go, and/or retrofit existing skill selections for that purpose.

3) There's always translation magic.

4) You can just look in the spoilers, language or no. That's OOC knowledge, but I'm probably not going to ever know if you did and if it helps you get the gist for RP then there's no harm in it.

5) Use skills. Sense Motive can get you at least broad indications of intentions. I'd allow Linguistics to do something similar.

That in mind, here's a belated and admittedly partial tour of living languages. I've omitted the racial tongues and some things you're very unlikely to have picked up. So mostly it's human languages, albeit many of which have non-human speakers. Descriptions should be taken as in-character for Abanasinians.

The Ergot Tongues
These tongues descend from Ancient Ergot, the language of humanity's first empire and once the dominant tongue of the continent. Ergot tongues are "normal" for most humans, and so don't carry much in the way of cultural baggage in themselves. As a rule, they retain its alphabet. Ergot tongues are most common in western Ansalon.

Abanasinian. You speak this already.

Ergot. The tongue of Northern Ergot. The direct descendant of Ancient Ergot, but different enough that native speakers still need to study up to learn more than a few canned phrases of the old tongue.

Kharolian The language of the forested land of Kharolis, famed for its port at the Lordcity of Tarsis. Kharolian has significant influxes of elven and dwarven vocabulary, which can make it sound alternately sophisticated and brusque.

Solamnic A refined, civilized, if often quite formal and verbose tongue spoken in Solamnia and by its famous knights. It's probably the most widely spoken human tongue on Ansalon as a whole at present. Speakers of Solamnic are often perceived as somewhat stuffy and particular, but well-meaning. In Abanasinia, Solamnic is a common language for well-off, cosmopolitan humans to learn. Texts brought in from abroad, often at great expense, are usually written in Solamnic.

The Istarian Tongues
These are the daughter languages of Ancient Istarian, a tongue which once threatened to eclipse Ergot and its children. The ancient version grew tremendously in complexity over time, taking many influences and direct borrowings from Celestial. These collectively gave it a very intricate system of polite address and social status marking. Since the Cataclysm, it and its descendants have largely fallen into ill repute. Istarian tongues are most common in eastern Ansalon and usually retain its intricately flowing calligraphy.

Kalinese. The language of the Blood Sea ports, little known beyond them except as a typical tongue of pirates and other exotic and untrustworthy sorts.

Khur. The tongue of the desert reavers of the same name, sometimes called Khurrians, who gather in great hordes and rise up to bring down the realms of men...or so the stories go. In other stories the same Khurrians are an exotic and noble group of nomads, much like the Plainsfolk.

Nerakese The tongue of the land of Taman Busuk, far away in central Ansalon and noted mostly for its obscurity. Since the Cataclysm, an unimaginably far away place beyond which the world turns decidedly fantastical. The people of Taman Busuk are famously poor, desperate sorts who would as soon cut one's throat as say hello. If one appears rich, an honest person should be twice as wary.

Nordmaarian A tongue of the tropical north, spoken by fierce horselords famously jealous of their freedoms nigh to the point of madness. A Nordmaaran, or Nordman, meets the monsoon without fear and learns to ride before walking. Or lives in a city with as much sweat as air, dueling on any point of honor. Some fancy themselves knights in a humble manner, but of a far ruder sort than the famed Knights of Solamnia.

Saifhum Tongue of the island of the same name, which uniquely adopted the Ergot alphabet. Its speakers have a somewhat better reputation than their Blood Sea port neighbors, as they incline much more reliably to trade in lieu of piracy. If the stories are true, they ride wheeled sailboats from town to town rather than horses.

It might be tempting to pick some languages up. Currently Caitlyn knows Common (Abanasinian), Elven (Do the elves have a common tongue or should I say Qualinosti here?) and Solamnic due to her family history.

Qualinesti and Silvanesti elves share a tongue. There may be some dialect differences, but nothing that renders them mutually incomprehensible.

You can certainly put them in now. A tavern wench in Solace would likely have heard Elven, and Solamnic. She may have heard Ergot too.

In 1st edition the elves had different languages such as the Silvanesti spoke Silvanesti while the Kagonesti spoke Kagonesti, which 3.5 got rid of. I kind of liked that.

Mariel Uth Kaldar wrote:

I'd forgotten about that. Remembered the Kagonesti, but they're an insular people at this point in the story. I recall from the novels that most everyone was a bit surprised to find the Kagonesti.

Hm. They have been separate polities for thousands of years. Even for elves, that's a while. It would make more sense if they spoke separate tongues. Ok. Retcon: they do.

PCs who know Elven would almost certainly know Qualinesti and might not be aware of Silvanesti at all, given the significant distance to the nearest native speaker.

Elven Languages
The Elven tongues are held in high esteem for their musical qualities, great descriptive power, and their association with the Elven people. Both Elven tongues require a sensitive ear, making many fine distinctions of tone and accent in speech. They use their own flowing script, which often features in Elven art as a form of decoration as well as communication.

Qualinesti. The tongue of the Elven nation of the same name, which conducts some trade with Solace and the rest of Abanasinia. To most, Qualinesti simply is Elven. It's a tongue for artists and poets more than traders, though those who do regular business with elves often pick up a few words. Elves generally prefer to transact business in Abanasinian, but usually humor good-faith efforts to accommodate them.

Silvanesti. The tongue of the elfland of the far east, little known beyond its borders. The Silvanesti are considered, even by other elves, extremely formal and hidebound. Their tongue preserves many features that Qualinesti has abandoned or much reduced over the centuries, particularly an extremely elaborate set of forms of address with distinctions based on both ordinary social status and interrelations between peers of different houses. Infamously, the most casual form of address is used almost exclusively with non-elves.

I may dip into other languages later but I think based on where Jakun is from, what he took makes sense.

Since she is part Qualanesti she would know Qualanesti elven. Would she know about the Silvanesti? Kagonesti? Dimernesti or Dargonesti?

Mariel Uth Kaldar wrote:

If she grew up in a fairly conservative Qualinesti environment, or just hung out with lots of elves who could remember before the Cataclysm, I could see her picking up Silvanesti. The Kagonesti aren't in general contact with either conventional elven nation, but Mariel might know of them as the wild elves which Istar hunted down. Most likely she'd think of them as an extinct people. The Dimernesti and Dargonesti would likely be little more than legends to her. Maybe they existed at one point, but they likely all died in the Cataclysm.
