Hakon rushes towards the remaining dragon-horse with a muttered oath. He swings his sword and shield in a devastating one-two maneuver. As the blows strike, torm's divine grace fills the paladin, and he projects the Truesayer's light in a protective aura that fills Ranek's crushed body and shields Thurvek in a glowing sphere of light.

Hakon's Hackery:

Since no one claimed it, let's give the +8 bonus to Ranek along with protection from evil, immunity to shaken for 4 rounds to first taker in 60' feet.
Enduring Crane Strike on the dragon-horse-thing
heals: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 to Ranek
bastard sword attack,power attack, Barra's power, two-weapon fighting: 1d20 + 6 - 1 - 2 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 6 - 1 - 2 + 3 = 21
damage, power attack, Barra's Power: 1d10 + 3 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 3 + 2 = 16

But wait! there's more! Because he initiated (and pulled off) a strike, Hakon gives guardian shield to Thurvek
that's +8 temp hp, protection from evil, and immunity to shaken for the next 4 rounds.
Also, everyone in 30' gets a +4 vs fear (because he's a paladin)

Round 3
Bolkvar turned at once for the other horse, but even in its weakened state it was just a touch too fast for him to land a solid blow.

Ariyana cried "Ranek!" and called out to Thurvek in dwarven to help the fallen man. After hastily speaking to Thurvek, Ari lines up her bow and arrow for a single (hopefully) perfect shot. The arrow flies true to its destination. She could only hope that the party's combined efforts would bring the monstrosity down in time to save Ranek. It struck true.

Aldon sees Ranek go down and decides that the man could well be stomped to death and that just would not do... Aldon and Ranek switch places, where the Magus was laying Aldon is standing an vice versa.

"You see Ari? This is why we should use the Mindlink, what if this beast can speak Dwarven?" Aldon stares at the remaining creature defiantly practically eye to eye.

Ranek is still dying at this point or he would act here.

And now Ranek can act. Going to slightly bend continuity so his RP with Marcus makes sense. :)

Standing up, Ranek sees many of the others swarming the horse, and decides to stay back and fling a dart of acid at the horse. Unfortunately, the acid goes high, missing the horse.

Damn it! Leaping bodily over the dead horse-thing, Barra tacks wide around the still-living creature to flank it and hopefully distract it from Ranek.

"RANEK!" shouted Marcus as he ran over to him and prayed, "Torm Truthsayer, I beseech thee, come to Ranek's aid!" A nimbus of blue energy shone from his hand and when he touched Ranek's injured form, some of his wounds vanished.

"Thank you. I thought I'd be seeing Mystra sooner rather than later," Ranek said.

With his weapons readied, Thurvek is jarred by the human wizard falling near him. For a second the dwarven cleric considers stopping the attack to attend Ranek, until Marcus offers a blessing from Torm. This beast must fall. NOW! Thurvek steps forward draconic horse, keeping the fallen human to the cleric's right shoulder. "Fu<k your flesh!!" Thurvek lands a solid chop upon the horse's neck.

Rearing, the horse brought its huge, foaming jaws down on Hakon. The paladin just narrowly turned so his armor blocked the horse's bite. As its fetid breath washed over him, he realized that had it not been slowed a moment by fear of him, Hakon might be near death.

Ari raises an eyebrow as Aldon starts talking about using the Mindlink again.

He picked a terrible time to try to convince me again, she thinks.

Still, some small part of her acknowledged that the man could be on to something. She would have to think about it more later. Perhaps when they weren't facing down a bloodthirsty horse... thing.

Ari breathes a sigh of relief as Ranek is revived and removed from harm. The relief only lasts for a moment, though, as the remaining horse nearly takes Hakon's head off. This had to end. Now.

Moving a bit to adjust her stance, Ari grips her bow with determination. Three arrows fly forth from her bow. As they fly off in various directions, Ari tries to look on the bright side.

Ranek curses as the magic fades. He examines their foreheads, cutting open the scar where the original magic aura had been with his dagger. "I fear we will get little from the corpses. Still, I will collect what I can. Perhaps we can determine what corrupted the creatures."

Marcus glanced at Ranek out of the corner of his eye and bit his tongue when Ariyana spoke. It was kind of funny but he didn't think Othic would be amused.

In a sober voice he asked Othic, "What will you do now? I imagine loosing a pair of horses is quite a blow, and it may not be safe in town. If the gods are kind, I'll be able to get you another pair to replace these. We need to investigate Brother Bolvkar's concerns first, though. It wouldn't do to get you fresh horses only for this to happen again." Marcus points at the twisted draconic corpses. "Might take a while to sort things out, but once they are, is there some place I can leave a message for you?"

"Once Ranek finishes collecting samples, burning their bodies is probably a better plan. I'm not sure where we'll find dry materials to burn them with, though. On the other hand, this ground is probably as hard as a rock still."

Ranek had little trouble opening the scars on the dead horses. From both a fine stream of grayish-black ash spilled out. It looked to have been packed tight around slivers of topaz, which were driven through the skull and into the brain.

Ari smiles at Othic's words. He clearly didn't mean any harm by them. Still, she couldn't resist having a bit of fun herself.

"If it makes you feel any better, I'm not from Waterdeep. Most people from Calimshan consider it our worst city."

"Everywhere's got one of them," Othic said. "Like them elves up in the Cold Wood that go murderin' and thievin' as soon as look at a man. Don't know what's got into them."

Othic nodded thoughtfully, "It's a loss, to be sure. I'd be grateful if you could replace them but if you can't, I don't want to think about what they'd have done for me. Anyhail, don't see as I'll need a team for a few rides yet the way this spring is going."

"I'm just inside the gate, not too far back. Anybody knows how to find me...but if there's a need then I can check up at the Copper Dwarf."

Aldon gives a slight bow to Othic, "We are quite sorry for the loss but your safety I think you would agree is paramount. If we can find some way to compensate you, rest assured, we shall".

Speak for yourself, monk. We weren't the ones with the cursed horses; the man's blessed that we came along when we did.

After crouching down in curiosity to watch the horses' heads get slit open and satisfying himself that whatever happened here wasn't nearly natural, Barra looks to the others. "Do we want to take the stones? If we can get them looked at they may give us some hints." He makes no move to grab them himself.

Though unaware of Barra's thoughts, Ari's own echo his. Why... would would we compensate him? It wasn't our fault that they were possessed, or whatever those things did to them.

Ari bit her lip. Her thoughts were something Oretholn would have said. Ilmater called for better. While it was objectively true that they owed the man nothing, it was still important to be sympathetic.

"We are sorry for your loss, Othic. But like Aldon said, we're glad you're safe."

Ari walks over to where Ranek is examining the corpses and looks at them herself to see if she notices anything useful.

Marcus intends to buy Othic new horses out of his own pocket. Why? Because Paladin. Might need to wait for a while before he can afford it and before it's safe to do so.

Marcus examines the grizzly evidence and sighs "I suspect we probably should Barra and once we have learned all we can, we should destroy them. They have been used for a filthy purpose and are tainted." I don't really want to throw away loot btw. If they are not tainted, Marcus won't insist.

GM, is it 1) possible to extract the topaz shards, and 2) if so, how would we do it?

Godsdammit! thought Thurvek.
With great reluctance, the dwarven cleric grumbled, "I have the tools you seek in my healer's kit, wizard. I suppose with your assistance we can see about getting those shards."

Othic listened to the condolences, looked at the corpses of his horses, and finally shrugged, "I'll just be in Auvandell then. No sense staying out here now. My thanks for your help." He politely took his leave.

Ariyana detects fading enchantment and necromancy about the stones and ash, respectively.

A Heal DC 25 or Sleight of Hand DC 30 should get them out intact. They're fairly narrow so you'd have to be careful but it's doable.

If Ranek and others agree, Thurvek can take a 20, getting a Heal 31 check.
