Thurvek Noclan |
Thurvek kneels down to examine the bodies. The dwarven cleric delicately brushed the hair out of the face of one of the bodies.
"F#<king bastards!" Thurvek muttered under his breath.

Ari smiles at Marcus's words and says, "Thank you. Between the two of us, we should be able to keep the group on track."
Once the group arrives at the site with the bodies, Ari joins the others in examining the crime scene. She tries to help Bolkvar in his examination of the bodies, but also looks for clues among the tracks left on the ground.

Not sure how much I can determine, but I'm seeing if it looks like the tracks were made by the people whose bodies we see or if it looks like they were dragged here by whoever burned them. And if they were dragged, were they dragged from the direction of the copper door or from the direction we came from?
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek feels sorrow at the sight of the bodies - it appeared they were too late to save some of those who had gone missing. Leaving the examination to those who had studied such things, he turns his attention to the copper door, studying it to see if it had been opened recently, as well as examining the green tears.
Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
For the green tears, are we talking normal copper oxidation, or is this something else? Any signs the door has been opened recently?
Marcus of Torm |
"Torm have mercy!" exclaimed Marcus upon seeing the corpses. While the others bent down to determine the causes of death, Marcus decided to check for the presence of magic before keeping watch and helping Ariyana read the tracks.
Casting detect magic. Also Samnell do these corpses match the descriptions of the lost adventurers?

Couldn't get on last night.
What kind of bodies? Children? Adventurers?
”Proof we are in the right place.” Bolkvar held has nose as he moved forward to investigate. ”Wonder what it is that killed these, and who they were.”
[dice=Perception on bodies to tell about who they were and for any physical loot or clues]1d20+10
[dice=Heal on bodies for what killed them]1d20+10
The corpses look to have died from a combination of battle wounds and something that burned them but didn't leave much scorching behind. Bolkvar thinks it was probably Art. The bodies are a mix of goblins and troglodytes.
Thurvek believes they were holding up their end of the fight before being dispatched; several of the wounds look like an arm was thrown up to block a blade.
Ariyana sees that the bodies do appear to have been dragged. The tracks turn into a welter of scrapes, steps out of line, and so forth that suggest a battle site. Then the bodies would have been hauled out of the way before whoever left the tracks moved on.
Ranek believes that the green tears on the door are the normal work of time and water. The door appears still functional, but he can't say if it's been used recently or not.
Marcus finds no magical auras about the bodies or door.

Ariyana Dawn |
"It looks like the bodies were dragged here. And a battle took place here as well. Whoever did this dragged the bodies out of the way afterwards so they could pass by."
At Bolkvar's comment, Ari says, "If these are all goblins and cave-folk, could the other adventurers still be alive? We should make haste. Every moment we linger is another that the children or adventurers could die."
Lightfooted Barra |
"Maybe. More likely they ran into something nastier than they were - all the more reason to be cautious. Last thing we want is to wind up like them just because we couldn't wait another minute."
Aldondrick Volharan |
Aldon nods at Ariyana's statement, "It appears the Adventurer's encountered these creatures. That may be why there has been no response to the alarm. Those creatures that would normally respond have been dispatched or are deeper in the complex somewhere dealing with the result of the earlier incursion.
Still, that was days ago"...
Marcus of Torm |
Marcus asks Ariyana to show him where she thinks the battle was fought and tries to follow the tracks of those who dragged the bodies to determine where they went and if the tracks are the ones they have been following.

The tracks do continue on and appear to be the correct ones, though Marcus isn't completely sure given how confused the trail is about the bodies.

”Goblins and cave-folk. Best be on our guard, our quarry aren’t the only ones down here. Let’s see what’s behind this door.”
Bolkvar finds no sign of trickery about the door. As he steps forward to open it, a voice comes from beyond.
"What do you want?", it asks in thickly accented Illuskan.
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek allows his shock at the voice to show, looking at the others who are more skilled at speaking to people than he is.

Marcus peers into the gloom behind the door, trying to locate the speaker.

"Greetings." he replied, "We're looking for some lost children and their would be rescuers. Don't suppose you've seen them?"

Ari's grip on her bow tightens as the voice calls out from somewhere unseen. She eases herself up against the nearest wall to cut off at least one angle of attack. Along with some of the others, she listens and watches for a response to Marcus's question.

Marcus could see a small crack in the door, about waist high. Something was behind it but he couldn't see more than a red eye. Hakon caught a glimpse of greenish flesh.
"You mean lunch?" the voice chuckled. "No small meat here. Check with the trolls."
Bolkvar Stonebeam |
Lunch, trolls? The children... The dwarf’s hands balled into fists, but he kept his temper in check. The creature was still talking, and more information could be gained. But he did not trust himself to speak just yet...
Ariyana Dawn |
Did that.. thing... just refer to the children as lunch?
It's all Ari can do to keep herself from firing an arrow into the crack in the door. No one worth keeping alive would ever consider a child lunch, no matter how terrible the kid was.
Ari pulls back her bowstring and aims an arrow at the crack in the door. If the creature's usefulness ends or if it decides to attack, Ari is ready to end its miserable existence.
If anyone were to look over at Ari, they would see a woman with a grim face and an iron resolve. Joking about children being lunch is one thing an Ilmatari will not tolerate.
In case it wasn't clear, Ari is readying to fire a durable cold iron arrow at whatever is talking should it become clear it's no longer helpful to keep it alive or in the event it decides to attack.
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek's face goes grim, and his sword slowly comes out of its scabbard. The battlemage is ready to deal with whatever creatures are in here - but, if the children aren't there, they may be better off hunting down the trolls.
Hakon "Tormveir" Hakonson |
Hakon girps his sword and shield, his face a dark scowl of righteous fury.

Marcus of Torm |
What if anything did Marcus make of this reply? Was it a joke? He rolled a 23 for sense motive.
Ariyana Dawn |
I don't think, in-character, Ari knows yet that the person in question is a goblin and that he's evil, so she's still standing with bow and arrow at the ready till someone informs her of such things.

And kill him, Ari adds to herself.
Thurvek Noclan |
"Goblins are like cockroaches", spoke Thurvek, "if you see one, you can bet there are more in hiding."
Ranek Clifton |
"Should we even be wasting time chasing the Goblin? If trolls are about, and they are more likely to have the children, we should find the trolls. The goblins can likely wait, and we'll kill them later. Surely if trolls slaughtered these, there are tracks we can follow to their lair?"
Marcus of Torm |
Doh! Well I guess Marcus said that to the wall.
"You may be right. I suppose we just need to follow the tracks and see where they lead. I can well believe where might be trolls in here somewhere, we shall have to be careful." replied Marcus.

He then attempted to follow the tracks but found the footprints of his companions to have obscured the earlier ones of the group they had been following.

Thurvek steps forward through the group to the small door. Unhooking his battleaxe and jamming it between the door and surrounding wall, the battle cleric intones a prayer to Clanggedin Silverbeard.

Marcus picked himself up and tried again to much the same result.

On the floor once again, he grins, "Think I've been here before, but I'm too stubborn to know when to stop!" He picked himself up again and whispered a prayer to Torm for guidance and with the insight of his patron he adjusted his stance slightly and this time he was able to get a proper grip!

After some less than dignified attempts that future bards may neglect to mention, the company force the copper door inward. A bear behind cracks, then breaks and everyone spills into a large, square chamber empty save for various bits of debris and what looks to be a none too comfortable bedroll. Rough stone tunnels lead out to the west, north, and east.
Ariyana Dawn |
Ari's shoulders slouch once they enter the new room. How many different passageways can this blasted place have?
A moment later, she reminders herself, Well, this is a mine.
Squatting down, Ari examines the room's floor, trying to ascertain which way the goblin went.
Survival (to follow the goblin's tracks): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek sighs. There were two other perfectly valid paths back the way they came that would probably lead to the trolls, but the others insisted on going after the goblins. He just hoped this wasn’t a waste of time.
”Shall we follow the tracks, then?”
Marcus of Torm |
Well the tracks did come here and unless we've got epicly unlucky with rolls I suspect they carry on down one of the passageways.
Marcus does what he can to help Ariyana follow the tracks, "Look My Lady, that appears to be a boot mark over there..."
