Would casting Restful Sleep help? Granted, we would need to give it a day, but it might extend the usefulness of those potions.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

As I read it, yes. Since Restful Sleep counts as full bedrest, you would gain back two ability points per night instead of one.

Ushari can cast 4th level spell 2/day so if she gets her WIS back, she can memorize them for tomorrow, plus she can use her 2nd and 3rd level slots (total 7) for the Lesser restores. That, coupled with the Restful Sleep from Jofram, should get everyone up to full the day after tomorrow, I think.

She crrently has one memorized so if she can cast it she will on herself (WIS) 1d4 ⇒ 3. If not, she can use a potion for it.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

How are you using 3rd level slots to memorize and cast a 2nd level spell?

HP: 51/79 | | Anatomist (+1 to confirm Crits) | | Fav. Enemy +4 = Humans, Half-Humans, Undead

8 hours counts as full day's bedrest (x2). 24 hours under this spell is 3x.

According to the PRD under 'Spell Slots': Spell Slots: The various character class tables show how many spells of each level a character can cast per day. These openings for daily spells are called spell slots. A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell. A spellcaster who lacks a high enough ability score to cast spells that would otherwise be his due still gets the slots but must fill them with spells of lower levels.

Huh. Learn something new every day. I hadn't noticed that codicil.

There may be a little snag in the plan... I'm seeing potions of Lesser Restoration on folks' equipment lists. I'm not seeing plain ol' 'Restoration'. Am I overlooking it?

Also, everyone good with Jayse's proposed Resto List order?

I thought one of the potions from Isolde was a regular restoration potion. I can check later when I can get on my computer. Jayse's sounds good. I wouldn't be opposed to some guerrilla warfare on the dogs today, too, while we still have spells left. No sense resting without casting a few spells, right? Plus, I'm out of darkvision potions and don't want Jayse to be the only one not affected by their concealment if we rest a day.

From the PFSRD wrote:

Healing Ability Damage

Temporary ability damage returns at the rate of 1 point per night of rest (8 hours) for each affected ability score. Complete bed rest restores 2 points per day (24 hours) for each affected ability score.

Restful Sleep
Duration 8 hours or 24 hours

You cast this spell immediately prior to resting. While under the effects of this spell, you and your allies enjoy a restful night's sleep. If a subject completes a full night's rest, it regains hit points as if it had undergone a full day of bed rest (regaining twice its character level in hit points). If a subject completes a full day's rest, it regains three times its character level in hit points. Any significant interruption during the rest (such as being awoken) prevents any healing that night and ends the effect of this spell on the awakened subject. Any healing acquired while under the effects of restful sleep is considered natural healing, and has no affect on effects requiring magical healing to cure.

So if you rest for 8 hours using Restful Sleep, it is equivalent to 24 hour bedrest. 24 hours of bedrest nets you 2 ability points per stat. The 2x and 3x numbers refer specifically to HPs gained back. I think it is a judgment call how those numbers apply to anything other than HP. Also, it specifies rest without serious disturbance... Depending on how you define 'bed rest', whether it can be achieved lying on a beach instead of in a bed, in an open area where you might be attacked, close to a Shaudran tower, dealing with flies or heat, with no ready food service, etc. it may not be possible.

To me, full rest implies being in a comfortable spot, with your needs being attended to, decent food being brought to you as needed, etc. I can't see the entire team lying around for 24 hours since there would be no one to do all the work required to take care of everyone, guard the group, etc. Now if one or two characters want to rest for 24 hours and the rest of the team is willing to take care of them - OK. But, realistically, I think the best you are likely to achieve here is the '8 hour' version of the spell unless you want appoint a few nurse-maids.

STONE-FACED KILLA

I think a bombing/rapier retrieval trip may be in order. :D

STONE-FACED KILLA

Also, if we're gonna spend a day 'down', you think Isolde could brew up some more Restore potions with Jayse's assistance?

Given the rule Ushari just enlightened me on, Isolde can do quite a bit more than I first thought...

The oracle sets to work, endlessly repeating a single spell... By the end she is drenched in sweat and completely exhausted. You are all completely healed, minus the physical wounds suffered by Jayse, Straehan, and Skitter.

BOOM Goes the NPC Dynamite:

SPAM Lesser Resto - 1d4 ⇒ 4 JAYSE Healed!
SPAM Lesser Resto - 1d4 ⇒ 4 STRAE -1 DEX
SPAM Lesser Resto - 1d4 ⇒ 3 STRAE Healed!

Sweet! Now to discuss re-entry strategy. And Jayse, thanks for reminding me to save that Mage armor scroll, cuz I'm definitely going to bust that out this time.

It looks like Strae is missing 11. How many is skitter missing? Here's some wand charges. First Strae, then Skitter.

1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

So Strae heals 11 and Skitter heals 7. Let me know if he's still hurt.

I'll also use one of my pearls of power to re-memorize Chill Touch.

STONE-FACED KILLA

@ Orin: for whom? Jayse is still covered by his own Mage Armor. Does Orin not have armor on?

And while we're passing around heals…
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 -- Jayse is topped off. Scratch 2 more off your wand.

Jayse watches in escalating surprise then fascination as the witch burns through magic and their own fatigue like so much kindling. When she's finished, he can't help but stand for a few seconds -- mouth working like a fish out of water.

"Isolde! That was --" he grabs the exhausted witch, giving her a big ole kiss on the lips. Setting her back down, he gives her a smile that is somehow both mischievous and deeply thankful. "Words didn't seem to cover it. I'm forever indebted to you. You should feel more than free to return home if you want to… we'll do our best not to squander your help."

His blue eyes look back at the black structure -- or more accurately -- at a certain dog therein. "You guys up for payback? I have a b!tch to slap."

Ushari, let's go get that blade!
I say Jayse dances in as a decoy, and everyone else light those b!tches up from the boat! :)

Sorry, I didn't realize you got hit by the dogs. I want to use Mage Armor on myself. Yes I'm wearing armor, but my armor doesn't do jack against the shadows. Mage armor, on the other hand, will give me decent protection against them.

Orin Vanderwhal wrote:

Point of order, Mr. Orin...Skitter is a construct and therefore cannot be healed by the wand. It takes a Make Whole or Mending spell to repair him.

Ushari nods in thanks, overwhelmed by gratitude. "Isolde, when we are finished here, I will treat you to the finest dinner you can imagine!"

She sets her jaw in response to Jayse's plan. "Agreed. You want to pay those mutts back for ripping your jacket...I want to tear their f@%!ing hearts out!"

Whoops, my bad. That makes sense. Ushari, you drank a potion of darkvision, right?

Orin watches Isolde with admiration.

Thank you! Had you not been here and we had to rest for days, who knows what could have happened in the interim? We, and Naladoria herself, are in your debt.

STONE-FACED KILLA

Jayse thinks for a few minutes, chewing the inside corner of his mouth. "Ushari. Don't suppose you know how smart those shades are? Orin, how about the mutts? Also," he fishes out one of his potions (Potion of Protection from Evil), tossing it from hand to hand. … will this work against them? Here's what I'm thinking. Those things seem like guard dogs to me. A very dangerous trap set agains intruders. So, we give 'em something to eat."

"We row out there. I'll take the potion, then hop in and try to stay in eye-line to all of you, most specifically Jofram and Straehan. Hopefully they'll come running to eat me. When Straehan or Jofram gives the word, I'll hit them with the Glitterdust potion we got from the potion-maker in Orfallen, and bolt. You guys unleash hell." He shrugs, "It's risky, but it possibly gives us the best results for the least danger. Plus, if anyone has any additional defensive buffs, I wouldn't' turn them down."

Anyone capable of casting Mirror Image on Jayse as a full-round action? (Orin, just a heads up, SR has kindly allowed personal spells to be cast as touch spells as full-round actions.)
.
Any glaring holes in my plan? Improvements? Suggestions?

Orin wrote:

Ah, gotcha. If my plan has merit, we might be able to save you that scroll after all. :)

And if someone can cast Light on some item of Jayse's, all the better.. want people to be able to target the baddies.

Also, turns out I don't have a Potion of GLitterdust... it's Grease that I have. Hmmm...

Ushari nods slowly, "That seems a good plan. I can also summon a spiritual ally to assist you Jayse and also make sure you don't get overwhelmed. I can also give you a Shield of Faith and the touch of Heroes to help you as well." Shield of Faith/Heroism.

Other than that, I can't think of anything. Jayse did you want to take Skitter with you? He could have the Light spell on him if you want.

I wish I had memorized Major Image. Just make an image of us running around in there and smoke them all out. Since I didn't, though, your plan looks pretty solid.

I wasn't aware of that house rule, so I'm glad you said that. I can hit you with mirror image before you go in, and I can cast light on something too. I also have a "highly polished 2 by 4 foot mirror" that I was considering angling to reflect the sunlight into the room to see if that could negate the dogs' concealment auras, but I doubt that would work. Strae doesn't worry about concealment, so it just leaves Jofram without darkvision (and he can just focus fire the shadows).

I also have two pouches on my robe that create/call (not just summon) a mule. It's a bit evil (ok, a lot evil), but I could run in (invisibly), create a mule in the room, and see if they take the bait. The dogs and shadows aren't all that bright. But we're trying to redeem our sordid pasts, so I guess I'll save that as a last resort, hehe.

Orin considers Jayse's question, and his suggested plan.

The dogs are stubborn and vicious, but not all that bright. And speaking of bright, you saw them--they draw the darkness around them. It would be rare, indeed, for them to come into the daylight to fight us. My spells will prove more effective against them than the shadows.

I think they're the bigger concern--without reason to stay, they can sink into the floor with ease. Perhaps if we decided ahead of time--say, focus all of our attacks on whichever shadow is closest to the boat until one is destroyed, then move onto the next closest? I'm not sure fireballs will destroy them in time before they flee. Straehan, what do you think?

Just note that protection from evil and shield of faith don't stack, as both are deflection.

HP: 51/79 | | Anatomist (+1 to confirm Crits) | | Fav. Enemy +4 = Humans, Half-Humans, Undead

Jofram is dazed from the sudden healing. Blinking away the shock, he mumbles, "Thanks you... Isolde."

Wasn't there some sort of chandelier in that room? Just sayin'.

Isolde accepts all the thanks with a nod but seems more than a little thrown off by the kiss, clearly the last thing she was expecting. "I will stay until this business is finished. But I may not have many more spells with which to help you... at least for tonight. So be careful."

Given the way the ideas are going and based on Orin's OOC comment, I hope you'll forgive me if I step in with my 'player hat' on...

Straehan listens to talk of traps and bait. He pulls out a scroll which he waves at Orin. "I've been saving this for a rainy day... Major Image is penned on it. All due respect, Jayse, I think it'd be best to use an illusion of our whole group as the bait to lure these bastards into the open instead of you. Much as I'd like to hit you with a Fireball, I couldn't live with the possibility of damaging that fine coat even more."

Orin Vanderwhal wrote:

"Focusing fire is a good idea. But I'd like to lead with a Fireball. It will hurt both the mutts and the shadows. That should make it easier to pick off the rest of them. I think we're at a tipping point here. We walked into their trap and managed to destroy half of them. If we can dictate the terms of the next encounter, where we get the first strike, I think we'll be able to either finish them off or reduce their numbers so far that they can't effectively challenge us."

He thinks for a moment, "We can't know what these Shadows will do. They seem driven by their hunger, though they are clever in how they hunt. We might be too delicious for them to pass up. Even if they vanish into the floor, they have to re-emerge to attack. That's their weakness. If we're patient and stick together, we should be able to exploit that."

STONE-FACED KILLA

"If you think that'll work. Im' all about not being in the center of it all. I guess I'll take point on the boat and attack anything that tries to come out."

I didn't know if it would take something 'living' to get them to come out and attack. I'm not sure what triggered them in the first place. But if an illusion will work, all the better.

"Any other preparations we want to make before we take another stab at this?"

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Some undead have defined life-sensing abilities. In that case, I'd give them an immediate save to disbelieve the illusion because it wouldn't be 'complete' enough to fool their senses. With Shadows, there is no mention of life-sensing so I'm playing it as their darkvision and normal senses are somewhat x-ray like (to allow them to see through stone) but are otherwise conventional, so an illusion will function well. Major Image has the distinct advantage of being all inclusive - it even gives scent properties. It is as close to real as you get - which I think should be able to fool the Shadows and certainly the mutts for at least a round or two.

If you guys are ready to push on - what is the exact plan? Who will be casting the scroll? I assume you'll be starting it before you get close to the cube otherwise a watcher might notice the discrepancies. Who is where in the boat, etc.?

STONE-FACED KILLA

wrking up a suggestion.. give me a few minutes.

STONE-FACED KILLA

Here are my initial thoughts. The Illusion thing seems to be the safest bet, though it has some interesting hurtles we need to overcome.
.
We cut the two sacks from Orin's robe into sheets, and use those to cover people on the floor of the rowboat, with illusions of everyone (except Jayse at the paddles) sitting on top. We row up to the opening. Jayse secures the boat while the illusion team jumps inside, creating a small perimeter around the fallen sword (or -- if it's not visible or is in a corner of the room) in the center of the room, in defensive stances. When they come and attack, we wait as long we think we can to get as many of them as possible in the blast-radius, and Straehan drops concentration (giving the illusion another 3 rounds in existence) as he begins blasting. That's everyone's cue to stand and open fire.
.
I had wanted to do this thing at range, but because of limitations on LoS, creating an effetive illusion through the crack, as well as targetting opponents in there, would be an issue.
.
thouhgts?

HP: 51/79 | | Anatomist (+1 to confirm Crits) | | Fav. Enemy +4 = Humans, Half-Humans, Undead

Obviously, I'm willing to try this from range, if everyone else can.
.
In lieu of Inspire Courage +2, I can use Rallying Cry. Thoughts?

Seems like a good plan, Jayse. Agreed Straehan should cast the scroll. Not sure what will trigger the arrival of the shadows so best to keep it simple. Ushari can wait until the shadows arrive and Strae has firebombed them to cast her Spiritual Ally spell. Heroism is 10 min/level so she can cast that on Jayse before we arrive at the ruin.

Jofram, a HUGE thumbs up on the Rallying Cry there, he he.

HP: 51/79 | | Anatomist (+1 to confirm Crits) | | Fav. Enemy +4 = Humans, Half-Humans, Undead

Of course, that means lower AC against all that Will damage.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

Alrighty, I'll work from that plan. Let me know what spells you cast on the approach in the boat. Good luck.

STONE-FACED KILLA

I'd actually prefer you stick with Inspire Courage until someone fails thier save against fear. Not only does INspire Courage boost their save, but it'll improve our combat efficiency until that happens. When someone fails their save, drop Inspire and activate Rallying Cry as a move action.... then that person can re-try the save using your Intimidate roll instead of their own Will save. Just my thoughts on it.

And Jayse isn't going to cast any spells on himself, though he will switch his stone to his hand (augmenting his mind blade) and have a Potion of Protection against Evil in-hand.

Let's wait on the Heroism until we know whether we'll need to wade into combat or not.

OK Shari can wait on the Heroism spell. I can see where that spell will be useful later on, he he.

STONE-FACED KILLA

Well, we might end up using it here, but I"m hoping not to have to.

I'm ready to roll when everyone else is.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

OK, I'll get things rolling. I'm assuming you are going synch your actions to the same init roll and delay until just after Strae who will delay until the quarry is flushed out. That being the case, the rolls are unneeded.

Hey guys, seems solid. A few things: If needed, I can cast the major image spell and maintain it, making the Illusory "us-es" react to the fireballs (like, illus-strae drops a fireball on "himself") if you think that would keep them around longer. Also, if it helps, I can cast obscuring mist as we approach and we can sail so that we are at the very edge of the mist, then cast the major image spell from there.

STONE-FACED KILLA

I don't see Major Image on the witch spell list... am i just missing it?

I have it as a patron spell, I believe.

STONE-FACED KILLA

Ooooooooohhhh... that opens up opportunities. You csting it and keeping the images "real" through concentration may give us a few more rounds of free nuking before they realize what's up.

Yep, and if you are proficient with a bow, I was going to give you mine to use.

Rat Bastard, Cheeky Monkey, Sly Fox, <insert anthropomorphic animal metaphor here>

It's a good plan... but you can't help but second guess every element of it as you row out to the ominous Shaudran cube for the second time. Halfway across the lake, Orin rattles off the words of the scroll and a light mist, conjured into existence, drifts across the lake obscuring the fortress from view. Once the boat is mist-shrouded, doubles of everyone, save Jayse, appear as the witch continues to cast. Even an uncanny doppleganger of Isolde springs into existence. She licks her lips and looks at Jayse in a way she never would in real life. The monk sees the witch's lips moving silently but it is Isolde who speaks, "Why don't you make a wanton woman of me - Mr. tall dark and well-dressed."

Ushari misses the exchange - oddly fascinated with her fantasy double sitting next to her and mirroring her every move. However, she notes wryly, there are some distinct differences between them. The acrobat-cleric is fairly certain her outfit doesn't have a plunging neckline, her chest doesn't resemble over-blown balloons trying to escape a tight blanket and her rear certainly isn't that huge. Orin chuckles but continues working the spell and faux-Ushari's assets deflate to their true proportions.

There is little time for chat as the crew gets beneath the ersatz tarps. Once everyone is hidden, the mist rolls away across the lake and vanishes quickly, bringing the keep back into view. Jayse rows the boat closer, surrounded by his phantom crew... with lascivious Isolde staring at his groin. But even her look becomes blank as they fall into the shadow of the keep. The phantom crew readies itself for action. Faux Orin whispers the words of True Orin to Jayse, "See if you can back us up to that opening. I think it's the only way we'll all get a view of the interior."

It is long tense moments as Jayse maneuvers the rowboat around and backs it up... no shadows or mastiffs are visible. No howls greet the team. The faux team points to a spot near the far wall, close to the Corridor of Crypts (E26). Resting on the floor, seemingly discarded, is Ushari's rapier glinting in the delicate light of the Shaudran lamp. It is far away from where she dropped it.

Faux Jofram hisses, "Could be a trap. We should get the blade and be quick about it." The rest of the team agrees as Jayse tosses the anchor into the keep. The assault team prepares itself and then leaps from the boat, which fails to rock at all despite the massive shift of weight. In a tight phalanx the team rushes across the intervening distance - weapons at the ready. They are nearly to the sword when the trap is sprung. From the northern corridor and the darkened 'star' corners of the room, the three Mastiffs charge and converge on the group while, from the floor, the remaining Shadows spring up - flanking and encircling the group. The attack is so sudden and successful, the assault team instinctively closes ranks, bringing the attackers in closer... They fend off, as best they can, the teeth and phantom claws slashing at them. The Mastiff's enjoy bringing down their screaming victims, but something doesn't sit well with the Shadows. Even as they strike the living souls, they are not fed by it.

Then an ember, like a tiny firefly, streaks into the room and lands amid the stunned defenders before blossoming into a roiling ball of fire. The Shadows gain shadows as the flash of the blast outlines them and their canine friends. None die in the blast, but neither do they walk away unscathed. One hound looks like it is about to drop. More than the mutt's shadow smokes and there is a distinct odor of burning hair wafting across the room.

OK, guys, you are UP! Unleash HELL!
