hmm. Everyone but me so far is first level. Stormy would be level 4. Should I create a new Core character?


Up to you, we have 2 4's and 4 1's, so we're at APL 2, so we're low tier. You have the option to start a new character, but keeping in mind someone said part 3 was 3-7, so... there's that. Can't get to 3 from 1 in 2 scenarios and it's technically against the rules to play these characters in anything in the intermittent times...

OK. That makes me feel better about being level 4, but less understanding about having four level 1s at the table. In theory people were signing up for all three parts and cannot do that with a level 1.


No but they can run 1-2, then pregen part 3 if need be with a level 4 pregen and apply it once they reach level (or have it applied at level 1)

Offering my 2 cents, I suggest tackling the tasks in the following order:

1) retrieve artifacts from the well - instructions say they are already there and, as far as we know, the well is not guarded and retrieving the objects doesn't require special spell prep

2) plant book with scholar - instruction say he is leaving for expedition, so there may be a time issue. Also, it seems relatively easy to create a distraction, while the stealthiest member slips the book in place. Some illusion spells may be helpful for prep or our
shapeshifting druid may be able to pull off slip the book in on her own. I suspect that both Farzinel and Nitre, if not others,
would like the opportunity to chat it up with an Osirian scholar.

3) the dance club - we know at least a little bit about the establishment and that the owner is looking for elves. Again, some illusion spells may be helpful as would an animal spy. I, for one, really enjoy Iago's banter and am looking forward to his trip to the club.

4) retrieve info from the cutthroat gang - we seem to know the least about this group and they appear to be the most dangerous. Also, if we slip up in the prior tasks, this group may hear about it and be prepared for the characters Perhaps, we can use illusion/disguise to pose as Torch and his goons. Maybe this is a mission where we can cut Theld loose and let him cause some mayhem as a distraction or calling card to get the gang's attention.

The above are my ideas, anyways. Let me know what yours are.

Full disclosure - I ended up playing Destiny of Sands- Part 1 at the con in Standard, though only part 1.

It was really fun and also interesting to see how the different party came up with fairly different ways of completing the tasks.

I realize that spoiler probably isn't necessary, but just in case you plan to play this scenario again:

At the con, the party used Disguise and Sleight of Hand to slip the book into the merchant's personal belongings. I understand we just barely avoided discovery.

Down the well, the party was attacked by the snakes in the water. The druid, pregen Lini level 1, used speak with animals to learn the background of the shrine and probable location of the rod, before we killed the snakes and one of the party got poisoned. The bigger dilemna for the party was how to get the rod into the city, which was a far simpler matter for this party. It eventually took some stealth checks and a bit of treasure.

At the dance parlor, the GM said he had to improvise a good bit due to the party's unusual tactics.

I am really looking forward to the other encounters and seeing how they end up differently as we continue this adventure!


I've run and played this numerous times, so no worries there. I actually ran 8-01 Nine times before I played in it, I just took a backseat and didn't metagame. I'm not particularly worried about this scenario as long as you don't go blurting out secrets you haven't learned. :)

Moving the strategy discussion over here.

We've initiated contact, for good or ill. We have to follow up on that. 2 possible approaches: ask for jobs, or lay it all out and hope she'll agree. If we want to do more scouting, we can go with the jobs approach. Whether or not someone gets hired, we get to meet her and talk to her. Sure, this kind of diplomacy/investigation isn't our party's strength, but if we don't try, we can only fail. I see little potential harm from it.

Regardless of whether jobs are acquired, we can still also come back tonight as customers. We can still do some low-key investigation. Since we don't really have a true stealth or diplomacy focused character, I'd recommend we not take too many risks, but it's still worth the effort.

If we get nothing out of those two strategies, we can always approach her again before we leave--or tomorrow morning--and then show her all our cards and present her the "subvert Grandmaster Torch" option.

I'm fine with the plan proposed by Nitre. As the token elf, Farzinel can say that he heard the Madam was hiring elves and that he can perform a number of jobs that don't require much physical labor - bussing trays, kitchen hand, etc. and suggest that his friend, Iago, wanted to Madam himself for, perhaps, more personal reasons. The others can just continue on as walk-in customers.

@ Nitre - if this doesn't fit with what you were proposing, let me know.

@ Rest of party - to avoid miscommunication, I will wait for agreement with the above from at least two of you before I proceed.

Another trip...

I leave for New York City around noon tomorrow and from there will leave for 11 days in China on Wednesday. I will be back late on Saturday April 7 and begin to catch up on April 8th. And yes I know I just got back from a trip.

I will have an iPad with me (better than posting from a phone) and should have internet most of the time but there are three days that are remote so I am almost sure I will not have internet all the time. I will do my best to post some but please both me instead of waiting for me. This is my last trip longer than a long weekend I have planned for the entire year.

Now, normally I'd go jumping right in to part 2, but I'm going on vacation next weekend, so in order to not have us on a long hiatus DURING mission, I'll post chronicles probably tomorrow, and then we'll start after Memorial Day. (Probably May 30th/June 1st) with part 2.
