MUCH better culture roll than last time!

As Arratoi calls for her surrender, he has a sudden realization. He had heard of a "corpse farm" in the Downlow which accepted corpses and didn't ask questions like the pesky station guard. Apparently normal fertilizer is quite expensive. The Vat Garden must be the farm he heard about. Everyone would know that these bodies are probably the origin of many of the Station's homicide department's cold cases. Grave robbing would normally be illegal, but this is even worse.

The Eoxian smiles through pointed teeth. "Aye, I can do that, Breather. " She tosses her gun to the floor, about halfway between her and Ash. Then she removes her backpack and tosses it as well. Her tongue slithers out of her ghoulish mouth. " Fine. Cuff me. "

Cora peeks up between her hands to see that the fighting has ceased for the moment. She scampers down the ladder to join the others in the garden and eyes the ghoul distrustfully. "She seems a little too willing to go, don't you think?" she whispers to Hedd, who happens to be standing in front of her, wondering if the Eoxian will submit as easily as she claims.

Oh!! I had forgotten about that previous culture roll. Sorry if this culture roll technically should not have been permitted...

Keeping his rifle pointed at the Eoxian, Arratoi replies to Cora, "Well no, I don't. But surely Ash does...right? No? D'oh!!

Arratoi turns back to the Eoxian and says, "Okay look, forget the restraints. That human there has a BIG gun with your name painted all over it, so no funny business!"

Arratoi lowers his rifle, climbs down into the vat and positions himself in front of the Eoxian.

"So, Exegara, all we're really after here is information about these Starfinder insignias that you sold. We're not really all that concerned about the legality of what you were doing here in the vat...yet. Where'd you get the insignias? How'd you get them? Do you know where the original owners are?"

COMBAT OVER
It looks like all aggression has stopped, so I'll call the combat here. No need to go in initiative order.

Arratoi, I think the second roll is ok. You're now seeing the room and the bodies, giving yourself a moment to think.

Domaya checks in on the party as Cora looks at the ghoul with suspicion. Cora senses no guile. Rather, it seems that there is real fear beneath the smug attitude the undead woman is giving off. As Arratoi leaps down into the vat, the ghoul returns her hands to her bald head. The ghoul's pointed teeth shine as she responds, keeping an eye on Ash and his enormous cannon. ”Have that filth blow my head off? No thanks. I ain't paid enough for that. I'll be good.”

She turns and looks at Hedd, she continues, explaining why she is here. ”The name is Exegara Long-Tongue, of Eox. I'm an assistant pilot for the Corpse Fleet's Endless Threnody. After picking up a cargo, our ship was surprised and crippled by a pirate ship identified as the Lawblight. The Endless Threnody now floats in the Drift, unable to leave, and I was dispatched to acquire repair materials. Eoxian ships require... unique materials to run.” She bares her teeth. ” Why do you care about me or my affairs?”

At Ash and Arratoi's continued questions and mentions of the insignias, Exegara looks around nervously, possibly looking for an escape route. When none appear, she sighs and answers. ”I didn't kill them, if that's what you're thinking. Our vessel picked up the distress call of a Starfinder vessel. The ship traveled to the Starfinder vessel’s crash site on a desert planet and acquired several treasures, including the Starfinder insignias. I know nothing of the ship or it's dead inhabitants beyond the few items salvaged from the downed ship. Partly because, before the Endless Threnody could get into the Drift, we were surprised and crippled by a pirate ship identified as the Lawblight!”

The long tongue slips between the sharpened teeth. ”Those bloody pirates left once they realized we had nothing the living would value. We were stranded in the Drift so I was sent here. If you're looking for someone to blame go find those pirates, not me.”

Sensing that the woman appears to be dealing straight with them, Cora relaxes her guard. If she is indeed telling the truth, then she and her ship have not done any wrong against the Starfinder Society specifically.

"I'm sorry about what happened to your ship," she commiserates, trying to empathize with Exegara's situation, even though it feels strange to do so with a ghoul. Being stranded in the Drift would surely be unsettling for anyone. "Do you know anything more about the Lawblight? Where it was from, or what kind of pirates they were?"

As for why we care...

Arratoi holds up his hand and activates the Starfinder implant, making it plainly visible to Exegara.

We care because we're Starfinders and we're looking for information about the fate of our comrades.

Arratoi continues...

Let's make a deal. Answer my teammates' questions, give us the location of the downed Starfinder ship, tell us what your ship salvaged from our Starfinder ship, and come back with us to the Lorespire complex. Aside from jumping the gun and starting this altercation, you have not wronged us. You probably assumed we were the police, which we're clearly not. But back at the Lorespire complex, we can verify your story and if it checks out, our superiors may be appreciative enough to send help to your stranded ship. At the very least, we can help treat your injuries there. What do you say?

Culture (about the Corpse Fleet): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Ash immediately recognize the name Corpse Fleet and his fingers are ready to fire against the undead woman.

The Fleet Corpse is not part of Eox, and not at all friendly with the Pact Worlds! They try to kill anyone not undead. I have already lost numerous comrades against them and their lackey!
I would prefer to put this... creature into the custody of the Stewart or be sure she never put a bone on Absalom Station or anywhere in the Pact World!

Grand Lodge

Domaya, and Ash, recognize the name "Corpse Fleet". The Corpse Fleet is a rogue element of the Eoxian navy who mutinied against the government when Eox joined the Pact Worlds. They hate all living creatures, and exist as a rogue military and pirate organization in the Drift. Think of certain Firefly bad guys... but more undead.

Exegara looks at the Ysoki. "Sorry, lass. I don't know anything about the pirates. They came up on our rear out of nowhere, though. May have been using your friends' beacon as bait. They took several pictures on my ship though. Those may be of use to you."

Arratoi senses that she may be cooperating so well to save herself and distance herself from the organization she worked for. A disgusting laugh escapes the ghoul's mouth. ”Sorry rat. I don't have the crashed vessel's coordinates on me. It was just some no-name desert planet. However, those would be in the ship log on the Threnody." She begins to smile as he welcomes her, but this moment is interrupted by Ash.

She takes a step backward from the bloodthirsty human. 'WHOA! WHOA! I just worked for the Corpse Fleet! I never fully bought into their ideals. Just let me go, I won't be a problem. Promise.“ Her dried flesh is pulled over a look of worry as she glances at the party, then back to Ash.

With a look of embarrassment, Arratoi says,

"Oh!! CORPSE fleet...I thought you said Coors' fleet, y'know, the fleet that infamously includes rations of beer in the pay to their crewman...I once traveled with them for a month, doing research for my future novel!"

This is where as a player, I intentionally fail a bluff check:

No one has ever heard of Coors' fleet because it's pretty obvious that Arratoi is lying through his whiskers to try and cover up the fact that he's never heard of the Corpse fleet.

"But I digress. Corpse fleet...yes, that changes everything! If you don't want my pissed off buddy here to make you dead...errr...dead-er (Arratoi gestures towards Ash), then you'd better continue to cooperate in every way possible - including giving us the location of the Endless Threnody."

Turning to his teammates, Arratoi says, "I suppose it's time to check in with the boss."

On comms, Arratoi will contact Venture Captain Arvin and update him on everything we've learned from Exegara, pointing out that we have two leads:
1) Data contained within the insignias that we can review once we're back at the Lorespire complex, and
2) The location of the Unbounded Wayfarer's crash site is recorded in the logs of the Corpse Fleet ship Endless Threnody. Exegara is sure to give us the location of the Endless Threnody. Note also that there are pirates in the vicinity of the Unbounded Wayfarer's crash site, specifically a pirate ship named Lawblight

After finishing reporting all the discovered information to VC Arvin, Arratoi asks, "Should we bring Exegara back to the Complex for further 'discussion' or turn her over to station authorities?"

Argon listens quietly, collating information. Then she frowns.

"If your ship was crippled, how did you get back here?"

"Oh dear, a fleet that goes around killing people? I'm certainly glad I never ran into them before, but I wouldn't say I feel better knowing that they're out there. Delivering her to some sort of authority would probably be for the best." Cora dithers for a moment, wondering what they should do and thinking, I don't like making these kinds of decisions. At least she manages to stop herself from wringing her hands together.

Finally she goes over next to Arratoi, while keeping a close eye on Exegara. She listens to his conversation with the Venture Captain, hoping that Arvin will have some better idea of the situation with the Eoxians and can tell them what to do.

After Arratoi is done embarrasing himself with his lack of knowledge of one of the Vast's biggest terrors, he goes to dial up the VC. Meanwhile, the Eoxian answers Argon's question. "Ha, thought I was lying eh? Sorry to disappoint. The escape pod I used to get here was taken by dock police. Didn't have the creds to pay the docking fees, I'm afraid. Good thing I'm quick on my feet." The Eoxian winks, in the most creepy way possible.

At the mention of the Eoxian consulate, she sighs. "Better than the station police, I suppose."

She turns to Hedd. "Don't let the big one shoot me." Slowly, she reaches for her back pocket. She pulls out a datapad, unlocks it with a complex combination, and hands it to the dwarf. "This has the coordinates where my captain said he'd be waiting for my return with the... repair materials. Follow those and you'll find the ship. Grab a nerd and search the ship computer. The log will have the coordinates of your downed ship."

Finally, Arratoi is able to convince the secretary to let him through to the VC. His crisp voice echoes over the speaker. "Well done! Keep those insignias. It will take weeks to decode them here, but they will interface perfectly with the Unbounded Wayfarer. We're one step closer to finding those lost agents. Now, I must ask you to continue your mission by finding this Eoxian vessel you speak of. We need the coordinates to the Wayfarer. Let me prepare a ship. It should be ready by morning!"

There is a pause. "Before morning, drop your Eoxian off here at the complex. We will interview her for more information and then hand her over to the Eoxians. Their rebel, their problem."

As this, the woman objects. "Hey! I just worked there! I'm no rebel! I'll explain that to the embassy. It will be fine." She doesn't look as confident as she sounds.

Part 1 complete!
Well done! Feel free to interact with Arvin, the Eoxian or to shop. But, if not, I'll move us into the next Part!

"One more question, Exegara. What are these special repair materials you keep talking about? And do you have any information or pass phrase that will help us circumvent hostilities with the Threnody? Might be a stretch considering they want to destroy all living beings, but I gotta ask the question."

I assume we'll all also search through the mercenary bodies as well as the confiscated belongs of Exegara. Can we get a listing of items/cash found? Once we've divided up the loot, I'll be ready to move on!

Exegara pauses and looks at Ash, nervously. "Uh... Eoxian ships aren't made of cold metal like yours. We prefer our ships all natural. So... I needed to bring back some... bones." She flinches, waiting for Ash to blow her brains out. Assuming she survives the next 6 seconds, she continues. "Specifically some skulls, our drift engine uses a lot of them and this station doesn't have the proper manufacturing capability to grow some."

Then she laughs. "Sorry rat, but no pass phrase is going to get a breather ship past my old captain. Most likely he'll fire first, ask questions later."

Thanks for the reminder, Arratoi.

Upon the bodies, you find four Azimuth laser pistols with half drained batteries, 3 assault hammers, 6 doses of Anti-Toxin and Exegara's datapad.

Part 2!
After dropping off the prisoner with the VC's secretary, the group does a little shopping then crashes at the free lodging provided by the Society.

The next morning at 0800 the group files into one of the arms of the station. Venture-Captain Arvin stands next to the entry ramp of a sleek-looking starship. He waves his hands over the side of the starship affectionately. “This is the Loreseeker, a Pegasus-class ship that’s one of the fastest and lightest in the Society’s fleet. He stops and appreciates the ship for a moment.“We know that a lost Starfinder vessel, the Unbounded Wayfarer, was discovered by undead creatures from a starship called the Endless Threnody. We’ve pulled some strings with our more reputable Eoxian contacts to get more information, but they’ve disavowed knowledge of the Endless Threnody entirely; this likely confirms our suspicions that the Endless Threnody is connected with the Corpse Fleet, a group of Eoxian separatists who refuse to work alongside the living.” He shakes his head and sighs.

“We have the location of the Endless Threnody in the Drift, courtesy of that ghoul you tracked down. According to her, its Drift engine is incapacitated, so it’s unable to escape the Drift. Take the Loreseeker into the Drift, cripple the Eoxian ship—as a Corpse Fleet vessel, they won’t be open to negotiations—and recover the location of the lost Starfinder vessel. Any questions?”

Arratoi will grab one of the antitoxins. As for the datapad, I assume we hand that over to VC Arvin for inspection?

Arratoi asks, "Are we to bring those Starfinder insignias with us? Or will you keep those here for decryption?

"And what about after crippling the ship? Without mincing words, are we to board her, kill the crew, extract the data, then leave the ship adrift? Sounds kind of brutal."

Arvin looks down at Arratoi and nods. "Yes, please keep the insignias. Their contents can be unencrypted once you find the main computer of the Wayfarer. They, and the computer, hold priceless Starfinder data which those agents probably died for. We need to bring it home. "

Then, he smiles sadly. "Let's put it this way. If you can get on the ship without disabling it, go for it. If you can get the coordinates without killing the crew, go for it. But I doubt those bloodthirsty mutineers will be willing to talk. " With a shrug of his shoulders, he continues. " After you're done, send us the coordinates and we'll forward them on to the Eoxian embassy. They'll take care of the rest."

He frowns at Argon's question. "I'm sure you're excellent with computers, but an Eoxian ship is not just a computer to be controlled. Their living ships can't be driven or controlled by a living soul. They run as much of Necromancy as they do technology. "

Cora simply nods along with the explanation and the discussion. The mission sounds straightforward enough, at least in theory. Cora nods solemnly in response to the Venture Captain's words, and then goes on board. She heads to her quarters to make sure her belongings are settled, though she has few enough of those. She prefers to pack light, to make transferring between ships simpler. The exception is her fine collection of cooking tools, which she takes care to maintain properly for a little while every day. If no one objects, she also takes it upon herself to improve the flavors of their shipboard food.

Profession (cook): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

When she has a moment, Cora goes to the weapons station to familiarize herself with the ship. The controls don't look too complicated, even though her experience with ship weaponry is more theoretical than practical. To Ash, she humbly says, "I daresay you're better at this than I am. How about you take control of the turret, and I'll fill in with whichever laser cannon points in the right direction. As long as they don't manage to get behind us."

She leaves 'they' as a vague mention of generic space combat opponents, but the truth is that she knows they're going out there to fight a rogue Eoxian vessel. Heading somewhere specifically, knowing that an enemy is there waiting for us. This is rather a different experience than just flying around hoping to avoid space pirates, she muses. I guess this is what it's like, being a Starfinder.

Better I don't know, more experienced may be. Don't worry, It's quite easy to learn and to manage to use cannon and such in a vessel like that.

Says Ash as he explains to Cora how the cannon of the ship works.

After a few greats meal, Ash says to Cora Hey Cora! Don't be so good at cooking, if we continue like that I could stop being able to get into my armor !
It's far better than what I was eating on mission.

He agrees to take control of the turrets.

Ash has also Computer, Engineering and Piloting on average if needed.

Argon seems lost in thought as she looks through her files on her portacomp. Eventually she realizes that Domaya was talking.

"Hm? What was that?" She says as she looks up, not noticing the flashing red light on her console.

After the six person crew piles into the spaceship, Hedd starts the engines and, soon after, the ship takes flight. Space travel is quite boring, even with the colorful landscape of the Drift outside the bulkhead. Thankfully there are no planar accidents during the trip. After 18 days, Hedd comes over the intercom and announces that the coordinates are just ahead. Unfortunately, there is nothing but empty space!

Argon, at the captain's behest, gets to work scanning for the enemy ship.

Threnody's Scans: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30

Unfortunately for the Starfinders, the Corpse Fleet vessel also has operational scanners and was ready to use them! Klaxons wail as the enemy ship appears behind yours! The Eoxian freighter is a massive vessel made of bone and steel. The front of the ship is a single enormous red lens, appearing as a sullen, bloody eye. The ship bristles with bone protrusions, as though it were some horned, skeletal beast. Some of the bones are charred and broken, indicating past battle damage. Laser cannons protrude from the front and sides of the freighter; but its rear weapon mounts are a twisted wreck. Gaps between the bones show the ship’s interior, but this is not from battle damage—this ship was never intended to accommodate living creatures.

Map is updated! And so is the NPC picture slide.

For the record, Argon-42 is not the pilot. I believe Hedd is, though I don't know what his piloting modifier is. Usually you want to use one of the computer bonuses on initiative because that is commonly the most important roll.

My apologies, I didn't notice the that difference between my estimation of Hedd's piloting skill and his actual would make the difference. The enemy ship has moved. I'll post a comprehensive post tomorrow night after our pilot and gunners have posted.

Cora sees the enemy ship come into sight directly ahead of them, and as soon as they enter range she lets loose with the forward laser cannon.

Helm Phase
Despite the less-than-inspiring words from the captain, Argon-42 is hard at work in the lab, scanning the enemy ship's capabilities. She sends the following report to all ship members. Wow! What a great result!

Report:
Basic Information
Living Crew: Zero
Ship Class: Heavy Freighter
Size: Large
Speed: 6
Maneuverability: Average

Defenses
AC 11
TL 11
HP 100/100
Shields None
PCU 150

Weapons
Forward Weapon: HEAVY LASER CANNON!!! Oh, the humanity!
4d8!!! Damage

Meanwhile, Sal flips the ship around and prepares to attack the enemy ship, reacting as the Eoxian vessel weaves through space, using basic evasive manouvers, it's bone spurs shining.

Enemy's Helm Phase:

Target weapons, DC 16: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 2 = 15

Gunnery Phase
The enemy ship fires a large laser from the gaping red eye at the front of their ship. Unfortunately, the enormous laser spears right into the small Starfinder vessel. During the barrage, the front shields fail and the front of the Loreseeker begins to heat up.

Enemy's Gunnery Phase:

Fire!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage!: 4d8 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 1) = 12

Ash returns fire with the main turret, scoring a direct hit on the body of the Eoxian ship, knocking off some bone spikes. Cora attempts to follow her lead and is partly successful, firing her smaller laser into a little spur.

Next Round's Initiative
Hedd: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 9 + 1 = 23
Foe: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Foe, back up: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
You win, so the Eoxian ship moves again! It backed up. Alright, everybody roll!

The enormous Eoxian freighter reverses it's engines in an attempt to keep you within reach of the front cannon. The lightning bolt represents the Eoxian front arc, because it can be hard to tell with these small tokens.
