what does "rolls only" mean...
-Posted with Wayfinder
Kai Starchaser |
is that in the scenario or something? It's odd to exclude taking 10...
engineering, computers, or Physical Science: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Kai has an unusual lapse of technical aptitude and can't seem to tell what's going on.

Lucky Sevens |
Engineering: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Okay, we've got more to work with than I expected. The inverse capacitor isn't properly elastanced though.
Pangea-Gamma |
Not used to be being led along by young humans, you see the circuits under Gamma's cheeks' derma-skin glow red.
Gamma then checks over the racer, using its personal computer to analyze various elements.
Computers: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Gamma smiles at Laboni: "You did a great job, I mean, you put this together with random pieces of junk. Remarkable! But, as Lucky pointed out, there's a problem with the inverse capacitor...".
Not sure if we can each spot a detail that she could tweak, or if it is one for the group. If for group, then stop here. If for 'each', then below:
"Oh!", Gamma raises an eyebrow, "my analysis shows that a couple of the bolts you used to hold the frame together are unsound. Too old. And, actually, after replacing these two, maybe we could simply solder the whole thing together. More integrity".
Chogas Steelskin |
Oba just cleans her nails with a knife, since she knows nothing of these technical matters.

Theshe |
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Theshe starts their normal procedure of ignore everyone but blinks and points at something with both left hands.
"I'm not technically inclined but should this wire be hanging loose like this?"
As Gamma said I'm not sure if we can each spot something or not.
GM Bugman |
These must be special rolls then... muahaha!
Lucky Sevens, Theshe, and Pangea-Gamma indeed do find unique details about the junkracer that Laboni has overlooked in her frazzled haste. "By the God's own circuits! YES! Thank you, I've been running in circles here, I had no idea how much work even a junkracer was. Could you help me finish piecing this thing together? Please? Or anything that you think would help?" The girl is pleading with you all now. "I, I, just ran an analysis ond the rules and see there is nothing mentioned about it,.. I found these remote controls earlier. I'm thinking we can install them and you guys can help me drive the thing or shoot the turrets. What do you think?"
Everyone can make 4 checks total to aid Laboni in any way you see fit. For those who can't directly do an Engineering, Computers, Perception, or Physical Science check on the racer itself, we can get creative here and talk to people or whatever else you devise. Those first checks count as one of the four, so Oba can make 4 more while the rest of you have 3 left.
Chogas Steelskin |
Obozaya wonders if growling at the components might help them work better. She shakes her head and looks at the weapons, to see if she can recognize anything that might help.
Perception checks: 1d20 ⇒ 161d20 ⇒ 21d20 ⇒ 191d20 ⇒ 6
"Obo sees that your weapons need cleaning. Obo will do this for you, for the greater glory of the Starfinders!"
The big vesk works on cleaning rust and grime off the turrets and weapons mounted on the racer.
Pangea-Gamma |
Pangea-Gamma is actually quite excited at the prospect: "I once had to repo' a PANGEA bot' that someone had on leasing. The man was using it on his hover-hauler, and so I reprogrammed...".
Gamma swings its industrial backpack off and opens it, pulling out its various tool-kits.
Its first move is to tinker with the racer's streamlining, cutting some pieces, using Mending to fuse a couple others together.
Physical Science: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Then Pangea tests the racer's balance, running computer analysis to see how to better move parts from front to aft, so the weight is distributed in a more efficient fashion.
Computers: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Finallly Pangea-Gamma takes apart the whole exhaust system, files some parts down to open them wider, and puts it all back together in a more power-efficient fashion: "That should boost your acceleration".
Engineering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
The work done, Gamma wipes its hands of all the grease, and smiles: "I hope that helps!".
Lucky Sevens |
Mechanics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Mechanics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Mechanics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
My droid has a module allowing it to make Perception checks autonomously, so I'll go ahead and roll for that - let me know if that doesn't work
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Lucky ends up spending quite a bit of time on properly tinkering with the first problem she'd spotted, but at least now Laboni would be able to coax a little more power out of the engines.
Afterwards she turns towards her own preference: overwhelming firepower.
One sizable laser cannon later, she looks on with excited anticipation at the Racer.
+5 speed and Energy Weapon

how are we looking in total right now?

Kai devotes all his time to getting more thrust out of the engines.

Theshe walks around the vehicle looking critically at its defenses and weaponry. As they walk they point out possible fixes and suggested arrangements that could be better.
+2 EAC and +4 KAC
GM Bugman |
So far:
Obo has 2 successes
Pangaea-Gamma has 3
Lucky Seven has 7
Kai has 2
Theshe has 4, but has only picked 3 upgrades
Mods are:
+2 Piloting
1 additional Energy Weapon
+20' move speed
+2 EAC
+4 KAC
Laboni's racer had an energy weapon already installed, so currently there are two guns on it. Domaya has 2 more "actions" to roll.
Domaya |
Domaya tries to find out more about Ratrod in specific. What's his tactics?
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Then one look over the nearly finished racer!
Engineering: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Boo these rolls!
GM Bugman |
Final Mods are:
+3 Piloting
1 additional Energy Weapon
+20' move speed
+2 EAC
+4 KAC
Domaya meanders through the crowd a bit more but is unable to gather anything else of note. Upon returning to the pit, she sees a much more impressive junkracer than before.
Upon seeing everyone in the pit again, Lobani huddles you all together. "We don't have much time. So this is it, time to roll out to the starting line. What, uh, should we call this thing anyways?" She nods to the racer.
Once named, Lobani dons her helmet and straps into the vehicle. miraculously it starts on the second attempt and she is able to idle it out to the starting line without stalling, joining the others. An exotic alien clan in silk scarfs walks onto the track, holding a green lace above their head. An announcer chimes in over the loudspeaker. "It is that time again Absalom Station! The hour is neigh for the most famous race in the Pact, the Botscrap 300! Today, folks, we have a special treat, the esteemed Laboni of the Starfinder Society has given our champion, RATROD!!, the honor of taking him up on his humble offer... Stay tuned to find out what fate has in store, as the mayhem is about to begin!" The crowd cheers for Ratrod, boos for Laboni, and goes all out crazy for the start of the race. The vibrations of the music, engines, and yelling mass of people in the stands can be felt in your chests.
There are two guns and one pilot that can be remote controlled. Let me know who is piloting and gunning each weapon and who is aiding each position. This is a single lap of the race in the campaign link. You have line of sight to fire down straight-aways and across hairpins, but not both.
Kai Starchaser |
Kai steps forward; "I'm a pretty good pilot; I'd like to help fly it."
+11 piloting
-Posted with Wayfinder
GM Bugman |
Ah, my bad. I blame tired eyes but nonetheless it is true after another glance through this section, no aid to piloting. As there are no allies to control, I'm going to have multiple people can aid a single attack so that everyone has something to do. The Piloting aid is explicit in the text, but the attacking is not so black and white so we'll go with it for fun and inclusion's sake :) Your vehicles stats are:
Speed 60 ft., full 600 ft.
EAC 12; KAC 16
x2 Attack energy weapon (Effect: –4 to Piloting check, Duration: 1 round)
Modifiers +5 Piloting, –3 Attack Bonus
To everyone's disappointment every time I run this, checks are made using the Junkracer's stats above. Final formation is one Pilot, two primary gunners, and three people aiding their choice of shot. So far sounds like Kai has Piloting interest, how about primary gunners?
Chogas Steelskin |
Obozaya can use one of the weapons.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Lucky Sevens |
Awww, Sparky couldn't help?
Regardless, Lucky's sitting at a +4 for gunning, so I think it's me an Obo as the primary gunners
Lucky finds a perch to watch the mayhem from, trying to get the hang of the remote-lasers before the starting-pistol.
Kai Starchaser |
so instead of his +11 Piloting, we'll be using the racer's +5 Piloting? Super lame.

GM Bugman |
Alright, good news! The gunners make ranged attack rolls with their bonus plus the vehicles modifier, the pilot makes a piloting check with their bonus plus the vehicles modifier.
"The Seeker, I like it!"
At the starting line
The alien drops the green lace and then fizzles from view, revealing it was a hologram. All of the engine's rev up as the pedals are slammed to the floor!
Gunner! Roll for weapons and tell me who you're attacking! You can shoot anyone that is within 200ft of you. 3,000ft to the finish!
Racer: distance down track
Ratrod: 0ft
Velocity: 0ft

sweet, just let me know when to make a Piloting check. With the other racers shooting at us, I expect taking 10 is not an option, Right?

Velocity, 400ft: 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 12 - 4 = 15
The starting line is a frenzy! Laboni's shot hits Ratrod squarely, causing his tires to lose some traction momentarily but then he fires back as the rubber catches. The other competitors trade shots while the field starts to initially spread out.
Roll for piloting! -4 to your check

Kai confidently kicks the racer into high gear and it leaps forward.

You had a -4 penalty against you Kai, please always roll when I ask. The gunning rolls are your personal ranged attack bonuses - 3 from the vehicles poor attack modifier.
Lemgem Kinetic -4, EAC 10, KAC 14: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

Velocity Kinetic -4, EAC 12, KAC 14: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Ratrod curses as two of your shots strike his vehicle and slows his down considerably. He fires again on Laboni as she passes him, striking her again. Lemgem fires on Laboni as well, targeting the leader of the pack and landing another blow on the Starfinder at the head of the field. Velocity fires upon Lemgem, causing her to skid into the debris along the tracks edges.
Roll for gunning (600ft range)!

Kai Starchaser |
ah, I see the -4 now; from firing our weapons, right? Or from being hit?
Kai continues to press the racer forward at full speed.
Piloting: 1d20 + 11 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 11 + 5 = 30 I don't know if the penalty is still active, so I'll let you apply it
