Before the Deepspeaker can answer, a hefty looking Kalo with a custom rifle and a much louder voice answers, "Can't tell ya, mate. Classified, ya know? More'n our necks're worth to answer. Tell ya after it's all done, eh? In the meantime, I'm Mantarider Ushuul. And this here," He holds up the rifle, which you can barely make out through the grainy video feed, "Is Muncher. Muncher's me baby, see? Custom built high capacity machine gun. She's a beaut!"
Pangea-Kappa |
"Oh? Hello M... Muncher! She IS a beauty".
Then Pangea-Kappa smiles and raises his fist.
He concentrates and the mote of darkness spinning around his head turns into an energized fist of crackling dark energy that sheds dim light.
"I have never thought of naming him... her... it".
Piggy & Porker |
A Ysoki face pops into the feed. Piggy is chomping on something, a candy wrapper can be seen in his fist. "Custom, eh? Next time you're on Absolom Station I would love to see her! Maybe I could pick up some tricks! "
Da'at |
Da'at's cowled face blinks to life in the feed. "Something about a ... Woah! Is that a zyrcon-adamantine ejector? Ooooh, look at that barrel! Xen! Xen! Take a look at this custom job! This guy has a Strandakii-II cooling coil installed!"
Reynold Malkin |
Reynold cracks a smile at the comms screen. "She's a treasure, make sure you don't get her wet, hate to see her rust up when she looks so pretty like that."
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Ushuul grins. "Specially sealed for underwater work. The secret's in the sealant. Use the wrong sealant and PSSH." He breaks off into a long technical discussion about the virtues of different sealants, which is interrupted by a female Kalos, who is accompanied by a silent female Kalos. "Ushuul will talk for hours if you let him. I'm Waverider Suulhu-Huur, and this is Wavetreader Voosh. She's more a sneaky sort, quiet and fast, but I'm a great fan of hand-to-hand. Perhaps I could spar with you if we're ever in the same space at the same time?"
Pangea-Kappa |
"Sparring can be nice, maybe even in water... I wonder what it is like, diving so deep it is all dark and the pressure strong. Like Gravitonic forces at work. The Solarian cycle at work", says Kappa.
Piggy & Porker |
Piggy pops on the com. " What do you think I've been doing down her all trip? Eating candy bars? " At this point, a loud crunch can be heard over the radio. Probably from a candy bar. "I'm best at fiddling with machines, but I'm a fair hacker and pilot as well. Porkers here is the real combat master. "
B4B2, protip: Add some quotation marks around your text. It helps it pop out a little more. Your posts look even better when you add some non bolded description as well!
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The Kalos continue to speak of their experiences, such as they can without violating their orders, but eventually the comm signal gets too faint and you lose their signal.
The next 13 days aboard ship are routine. You have time to do as you please, as the Drift engines basically work on their own. However, soon enough you hear the familiar alarm of the Drift engines dropping out and into realspace. The proximity sensors start to beep wildly - the ship's scanners have picked up an asteroid field surrounding the beacon you're following. You drop out of the drift on the edge of the field!
As you're scanning, your comm chirps. "Unidentified ship, this is the Veskarium vessel the Honorbound. Identify yourself."
Piggy & Porker |
Can the engineer scan? Or is that just the scientist? I'll throw this out, just in case.
Computers: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Piggy gets on his personal computer and begins tapping. Let's see if I can find out more about these asteroids.
Reynold Malkin |
Reynold comes onto the comm. "Aren't you at least gonna buy me dinner first? I don't just identify for any Vesk ship, you know." He grins slyly into the transmission screen. "I like how direct you are, though, Mr. Honorbound. Reynold Malkin and his merry band of Starfinders aboard the illustrious Hell Turkey. So what brings you round these parts? I hear the asteroids are lovely this time of year."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
B4B2 |
B4BS uses Computer to scan asteroids.
Computers: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
"Captain, interiors of these asteroids hold molten stone!"
Pangea-Kappa |
Science Officer is at the computer, for scanning. Anyone can take that spot.
My 2 cents is that it is best to organize a bit, and have some do Aid Another rolls when possible, and one do the main roll (since normally only one can scan, or other things).
________
Pangea bids their comrades: "Safe travels, and may Muncher munch away! See you in Absalom Station for a round of drinks and some tales to tell. May Triune guide your steps!"
As they pop out amidst the asteroids, Pangea helps Piggy with the scan, aiding in aligning the sensors.
If Aid Another is possible - and the bonus from the ship for Piggy's roll?
Computers Aid Another: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Pangea looks at the screens, and tries to recall what these kind of asteroids might be.
If someone has 5 or more in Physical Science, following roll is an Aid Another ; otherwise as the main roll
Phys' Science: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
"Starfinders, eh? You must be here for the same signal I'm tracking. I am Captain Yuluzak, of the Veskarium fleet. I am assigned the less-than-glorious task of salvage work, finding any technology or information that may aid the Veskarium in our war with the Swarm. It is not quite the assignment I would have chosen, but in war one follows orders." The Vesk looks regretful.
His ship, however, looks strange. The Honorbound is a normal Vesk transport, although ablaze on either side with three bright-red thrusters, which are reminiscent of the energy blades of a plasma doshko.
You recognize these features as a representation of the symbol of Damoritosh, the vesk god of conquest, duty, and war.
Reynold Malkin |
"I hear ya, Cap. So much interesting stuff out here in space, going garbage collecting hardly seems up to your standards of military expertise. Well, we know this distress beacon came from one of our ships, which is why we're following up. If we stumble upon anything your people might find useful we'd be happy to send it your way once we give the wreck a good once-over."
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The Vesk looks slightly sad, but resolved. "I am afraid I cannot agree to that. I have discovered something that might be of use to the Veskarium and I cannot let it go without a fight. But... you seem honorable, Starfinders. I propose a duel for the prize. You win, I back down and allow you to claim it. I win, you back down and allow me to claim it. Would you be amenable to this?"
Piggy & Porker |
Piggy sighs. Vesk and their duels.
He looks into the monitor closely.
Engineering : 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 11 + 1 = 15
Taking a +1 from this ship, since we're not in combat. Yet.
On the ship's private com, Piggy's face appears. "They've got a sweet paint job but no extra thrusters. Those are just for looks. "
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The Vesk nods. "Not to the death. Merely to disabled or surrender. I propose the following rules:"
• The combatants will not intentionally target the life support systems of their enemy.
• The combatants will abstain from targeting the rear arc—warriors should face the enemy head on.
• Combat is over once an enemy starship is crippled.
• Each captain can surrender at any point during the duel.
"What say you, Starfinders? Shall we honor Damoritosh with battle?"
Reynold Malkin |
Reynold scratches his head. ”To be honest I’m not wild about the slim possibility of crippling our ship in the middle of cosmic nowhere for the right to a beacon we already know is ours, but if the choice is between that and going whole hog with missiles and such because your Veskarium bosses don’t want to stay in their lane, I’ll go with Option A, sure. Your rules sound fair enough. Here’s hoping you put stock in ship repair back home, Captain!”
Xenal Doshbinder |
But think, Captain Malkin. A bloodless duel here could save other lives in the future. There are those within the Veskarium who doubt the wisdom of the Pact. Let us show them that we fight, and that we do so with honor as well!
Piggy & Porker |
Piggy shakes his head in dismay but does not trigger the com. This poor ship. I'm going to have to repair her. Again.
Da'at |
"With honor? I... Oh for crying out loud. Fine" grumbles Da'at. Last guy I heard talking about honor ended with a whole lot of his own meat seared open. Let's hope noone takes advantage of us playing the damn chicken-dance with this iguana.
Pangea-Kappa |
Mysticism: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
"By Triune, let us face these followers of Damoritosh, and let the cycle of life be on the upward swing for us!", then, Pangea adds, telling its comrades: "Be careful of those asteroids. They are strange. They are likely native to the Elemental Plane of Earth, chunks of obsidian that were ripped away and brought here through the use of Drift engines. And I must stress that... the interiors of these asteroids hold molten stone!"
Kappa goes to the gun console, and checks out the targeting system.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The Vesk captain lets out a hearty cheer. "Indeed, good android! Let us make glorious battle!" With a whoop, he ends the comm transmission!
STARSHIP COMBAT: we will be using the new DCs for maneuvers and checks. Please see HERE for more information. What I've found works for PbP is a two phase system - Pilot, Engineer and Science Officers go, with actual moving taking place after we've rolled to see who goes first. Gunnery phase takes place after that. If anyone has any good suggestions for streamlining the process or improvements, please feel free to make them!
Let's BEGIN!
ROUND 1 - Piloting, Science, Engineering Phase
Vesk Piloting: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Vesk Science Officer (Scan, DC 8): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Vesk Engineer (Divert to Engines, DC 13): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Your turns!
Reynold Malkin |
Reynold takes a seat in the captain's chair. "Alrighty folks, looks like we've been asked to dance and we've got some fancy new steps to show off. B, try to keep us away from those molten rocks. Keep the Honorbound in our forward arc, but stick to their flanks whenever possible. That self-conscious vesk doesn't want us peeking at his rear, but that doesn't mean we can't poke him in the ribs. Piggy, keep our forward shields in good shape but give a boost to our weapons whenever possible. Pan, can you scan their systems and find out more about their firepower? Once you've done that, see if you can target their pilot; if there's any truth behind the stereotypes, I'm guessing the vesk hit hard but their footwork is sloppy, so we might be able to outmaneuver them. And no one's better than B for that job, am I right?" He gives a thumb's up to B4B2.
"Gunners, do what you do best. I'm hoping the turret missiles can home in around those asteroids, but whoever's on coilgun you might want to think about taking a shot at any rocks Yuluzak winds up parked next to. Let's see if that vesk enjoys the hot lava surprise inside every box of Asteroid Flakes."
Captain check to inspire Pilot via Piloting check. @GM How many missiles do we have?
Piloting (aid B4B2): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Pangea-Kappa |
Kappa starts scanning the Vesk ship, and is rather amazed at how easy it seems to analyze it compared to previously. Thanks for the changes, Paizo!
But the enemy vessel is far away and there are a lot of asteroids in between.
__________________________
Science Officer!: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 • I count 21 squares, so I put in -4 to sensors, and the Drake has a clunker of a computer, so +0
DC=5 + 1-1/2 x tier of starship scanned + bonus from defense countermeasures
Piggy & Porker |
Piggy's voice comes over the com. "B4B2, you've got extra juice in your tanks. That should get us where you want to go. "
Engineering, divert to engines, DC 16: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
New FAQ'd DC should be 16. Pilot, your speed is increased by 2.
Piggy's face appears on Reynold's private feed. The round Ysoki face looks apologetic. "Sorry, Captain! I wasn't close enough to the guns to supercharge them at the moment. I'm heading there now. "
Reynold Malkin |
Reynold connects to engineering. "No sweat, Piggy. Good thinking on the thrusters, we gotta close the gap before we can start shooting."
B4B2 |
Piloting +2 from Captain: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 2 = 14
it looks like we're going first
B4B2 engage the thrusters and ship starts to move full speed forward and then turns left.
Da'at |
Did you say that the asteroids hold molten stone at their core? Could one near the enemy ship that be something Xenal takes a shot at?
Da'at aims at the enemy starship. "Hey Xenal! How do Veskarium ships respond to molten rock? Asking for a friend..." he voices over the comms.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 1 = 23
Can't find what sort of damage I am doing with the turret gun. Someone let me know please?
Edit:Oooooh... Crit!
Pangea-Kappa |
"I confirm. Molten stone inside the asteroids."
Reynold Malkin |
@Xenal I think our ship is facing “north,” so they’re still within your firing arc.
@Da’at Woohoo go crit! I think the missiles are 4d8 if my memory serves.
Xenal Doshbinder |
Using a node of the computer
Xenal cranks the coil gun around and fires!
Coil Gun: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 + 1 = 15
Damage: 4d4 ⇒ (3, 4, 1, 2) = 10
At either our foes, or the molten asteroid if out of arc
Piggy & Porker |
Piggy runs into the room beside the turret. "Hey, Xenal. Not that I want to worry you but... Got any duct tape?"
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Apologies, had a stomach bug knock me down. I'm back among the living now.
The coil gun barks, erasing the Honorbound's shields. Da'at sends a missile at the ship, which hits, dealing 4d8 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 6) = 19 damage! Crit system: 1d100 ⇒ 62 The engines are glitching!
The Honorbound returns fire!
One Gunner fires the flak thrower in the forward arc! Flak Thrower: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 for 3d4 ⇒ (3, 1, 4) = 8 damage!
The other fires two light laser cannons from the turret! Light laser: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 4 = 6 for 2d4 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 damage and Light laser: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 4 = 14 for 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 damage!
ROUND 2: Science, Engineering and Pilot phase!
Science (balance shields, DC 13: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 Success!
Engineer (Patch engines, DC 13: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 Success!
Piloting: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Your turn!
Pangea-Kappa |
Kappa keeps on trying to scan the Vesk ship as the space battle rages on.
__________________________
Computer: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Piggy & Porker |
Piggy pokes head back out. "Never mind! Porkers had some! "
Engineering, Divert to Weapons, DC16: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
All weapon rolls of a 1 this round are a 2.
Reynold Malkin |
Reynold claps B4B2 on the shoulder. "Spin circles around these lizards."
Assist Piloting check.
Piloting, DC 10: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
B4B2 |
Maneuver DC 18: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
"Captain! I try, I try really hard but I can't turn this ship more then this." Shouts B4B2 to Captain.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
I believe there's two rolls. The first pilot check is just basically initiative. The second is for any maneuvers. Feel free to roll again for your maneuver!
B4B2 |
I've been rolling for Maneuver already, so I'm going to roll for a pilot check
Piloting: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
I need to move our ship back, because I have already moved it
