Up the spiral staircase and on the second floor you find a huge library stuffed with books and scroll casings. Every wall on this level of the tower is covered in bookshelves, though after a quick scan of the titles any of you that are literacy inclined find that the books are mostly 'penny dreadfuls'. A style of serialized books featuring mostly bad stories populated with square jawed heroes and buxom maidens fighting dark wizards with bad facial hair. The more scholarly bookshelf has more interesting books.
Knowledge (Arcana) DC 15 or Appraise DC 20:
Your discerning eye catches sight of a copy of Astra Mysterii, a rare treatise on astrology written by the mad monk Clivarus. A rough guess puts the value of this tome at 75 gold pieces.
Knowledge (Geography) DC 15 or Appraise DC 20:
While noticing a copy of The Travels of Titus the Merdicant you notice something odd about the printing and upon checking find that this rare book was a first printing, made far before the author became popular. It would sell for roughly 125 gold.
Knowledge (Nature) DC 20 or Appraise DC 20:
By some splendid luck you happen upon a copy of The Floralegium by famous scholar Branthus Hart. This book of flowers containing illustrations and extensive descriptions of uses and knowledge is easily worth 250 gold pieces to any who would be interested.
Coming upon a library, Lyrysa can't help but scan a few of the titles, hoping the supposed 'wizard' who lives here might have left his spellbook out. "Hmm, crap, garbage, what a terrible selection of books." Coming upon one set of titles, her interest is suddenly peaked. "What have we here now. So it seems he has a few interesting titles." She leafs through a few pages, then proceeds to see if there's a sack or other such nearby.
Dantes will keep an eye out for anything he can use to carry valuables away. A backpack, sacks, etc. If others indicate items they want to go with them, Dantes will stash them if he has the containers for it.
"I suppose a library is fitting for a wizard to have, though I have to wonder at all this terrible reading material. I suppose they haven't had enough excitement around here." Ezekiel shrugs, leaving the book hunting to the others.
"I think we should move on. We can't stay too long in one place."
As you all rise up onto the next floor you find yourselves on a bare landing lit by one torch. Two doors open ahead of you, the one to the right is labeled with a small plaque reading "Office". The other is similarly labeled "Private: Keep Out!"
Marius moves up the stairs and stops at the top, holding up his hand, he crouches down, frowning at the doors. He turns, pointing towards Slevin, Devon and Dante, before gesturing at the door marked "Office". He turns and points to Ezekiel, then to himself and Lyrysa and gestures at the door marked "Private".
He stands slowly, before moving towards the door, keeping his dagger out and ready.
Just a suggestion, since Ezekiel and myself are both kinda ranged at present, it might be best to split us up so each can cover a different room from the doorway.
How about Devon and I switch then, so Ezekiel, Marius and Devon to private, Slevin, Dantes and I to office, that way Ezekiel and I can cover the rooms.
This door opens into a tastefully adorned office, paneled in oak wood and dominated by a massive desk with several documents in orderly stacks on top of it.
Bedchambers
This is a very large bedchamber, each piece of furniture extremely nice and well fitted to the room. A wardrobe sits across the opposite wall, with a massive four poster bed next to it and a large oaken chest tucked into the corner.
Perception:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Luckily Marius' light feet cause no noise on the rugs to be heard by the older wizard within, who sits at a small table near the bed looking at one of the penny dreadfuls with a large owl perched on a small peg near him.
"Is that you Blacker-" The older man's voice is cut off and his turn toward Marius abruptly stopped as he recieves a dagger to the back. Had he been unmoving the dagger would have killed him, but his wound seems bad anyway.
Slevin looks through the desk, finding various prison documents and a folded map. One of the drawers is firmly locked. As Slevin begins examining the map he hears the sounds from the other room.
Slevin dashes out of the office and into the other doorway. Immediately assesing the situation he guestures, pointing at the owl as he casts a spell through the open doorway, attemting to instill abject terror in the familiar.
Casts cause fear at owl. DC 15 Will save of flee in terror, succeeds, shaken for 1 round
Barely missing unfortunately for him, as the wizard, even though struck by Devon, seems to have gotten his feet.
Warden Matthias throws himself desperately away from the blades and into the last bit of space before he's backed against the wall and then desperately goes through the motions of a spell. A sphere of some sort of spongy substance, clearly aflame, spouts from his finger towards Marius, attempting to strike him. Reflex Save DC 17 For Half Damage:3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6
Ezekiel's arrow is right behind the spell and the warden avoids it handily.
Will Save:1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9
The Warden's owl begins attempting to fly from the room.
Drawn by the action in the room, Lyrysa glances in and sees the orb of flame. Knowing she cannot dispel it, she instead decides to attempt to prevent him from casting another spell. "He is a spellcaster, perhaps my own book was brought here!" She thinks to herself.
Ready action to cast Magic Missle, trigger he casts a spell.
Gritting his teeth, Marius takes a step back, away from the Wizard. Staring around, he frowns confused, before locking eyes on the Owl. Drawing his arm back, Marius lets fly at the Owl winging above their heads.
Dantes that should probably be aimed at the owl passing overhead out the door.
From the DM's description, I didn't think the owl had made it to the door yet, so I was preparing for it if it did, or in case one of the humans bolted for it before the owl's turn.
The wizard seems to barely remain standing, moving his arm to point at Devon with a snarl of, "Then allow me to correct myself." These happen to be his last words, as when he attempts to cast another spell Lyrysa's magic missile and the rests grouped strikes drop him to the floor before he can finish, though his sphere does manage to roll into Devon first, burning him horribly before winking out.
Marius missed his reflex save so I'll go for him, then Devon needs one.
Marius Reflex:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 for full 6 damage. Devon Reflex:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 For full 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) = 11 damage.
Seeing the spellcaster drop, Lyrysa restrains herself from charging in to see if her spellbook may be here. Slevin's earlier warnings a cautious reminder, she casts a spell and examines the room, a warning passed to the others. "As before, which Slevin stated, be cautious. All because he's dead, it doesn't mean the room is less dangerous." She spares a worried glance at Marius and Devon, not knowing what she could do for them.
Sorry. I keep using the wrong dice for a dagger. Dont know why, I just do. Haha
Marius swears sharply, feeling the burn tenderly. "Damn Wizard..." Drawing the sword at his belt, Marius plunged the blade in to the unconscious mans chest, twisting it violently, before tearing it free. "You burnt my arm you son of an ogre!"
Dantes shakes his head when the fire trap is set off. He stays at the door where he sliced the owl to keep a watch while the others ransack the office, just in case the noise attracted attention from outside. He grimaces at Marius's outburst, but says nothing.
Lyrysa spares a glance at the unconscious body of one of the other escapees. "Can anyone help him? He may yet prove useful. Also be careful of that chest, there is an aura of power about it." Lyrysa will continue to focus on the chest, moving into the room, attempting to determine the nature of the magic.
Ezekiel lowers the bow as the wizard falls. "Well, I expected more of a fight really." He quickly examines the room for any sign of his firearm. As for Devon's state of emergency, "Marius, why do I get the feeling that you can pry open that little box with ease? I think Devon might need something to put him back on his feet."
Slevin looks at Devon as if appraising the man before walking over to him and crouching. He removes the stopper from the vial, bringing it to the warrior's charred lips before allowing the contents to dribble into the dying man's mouth.
There is still a drawer locked and unopened in the office.
Marius checks the chest over carefully, then opens it with a flick of the wrist. Inside is a large collection of vials and powders. It seems the late Warden was a student of alchemy.
Craft (Alchemy) or Appraise DC 15:
The collection is heavy, but would be worth 200 gold to the right buyer. One could also remove enough materials for a portable lab, but that would reduce the price to only 50 gp.
Upon searching the Warden's body, you find a dagger, a gold ring set with diamonds, a vial labelled Healing in careful script, four scrolls, and a small clear rock that radiates magic.
Spellcraft DC 15:
You recognize the rock as an Ioun Torch.
Apparaise DC 20:
The ring is a wizard's college class ring. It is worth 250 gp.
Read Magic:
The scrolls are of Magic Missile, Sleep, Hideous Laughter, and Invisibility.
If you don't mind, going to try Spellcraft to decipher the scrolls since I don't have Read Magic prepared. Let me know if for some reason I can't and I'll rescind the action. DC 20+spell level
