Brin responds to the first attack, depleting his focus on the mind energy as he does so. Spitting out blood, Brin hammers his enchanted/psychic blade into the dog twice trying to stop the lethal onslaught, sure he can't take another hit.

And the black blade plunged into the beast up to the hilt. The beast gave a great despairing howl, then evaporated in a blast of brimstone and hellfire, leaving nothing but a great scorchmark on the floor.

She started looking around curiously.

The marks are of a Circle of Binding (Hedged Prison), specifically made for a denizen of the Hells or maybe Sinspawn.

Translating the runes, you realize that the whole room was designed to confine a creature from the Hells. It was even named; a Greater Barghest named Malfeshnekor. You realize that that creature had been confined here since at least the fall of the Thassilonian empire, countless millenia ago.
Some study and appraisal reveals the enchantment on the ring. It is a Ring of Force Shield.
The candles turn out to be Eternal Candles; they burn without heat or consumption, but only yield shadowy light in a 5 foot radius. Each one is worth 25gp and there turn out to be sixty of them altogether.

You are able to leave Thistletop and return to Sandpoint, taking the heavy warhorse (who's name turns out to be Shadowmist, an advanced heavy warhorse) with you. The mercenary Orik Vankaskerkin evacuated ahead of you, aparently taking Lyrie with him.
You also return briefly in an expedition to get that one ton bronz/gold helm, worth 3,000 gp.
The townsfolk throw you a celebration, parade you around on their shoulders, and do not permit you to pay for rooms or meals.
For a week.
Then everything goes back to normal.
You are in downtime now, to rest, recover hitpoints or stat damage, to train or even craft items.
