Taemin blinks through the pain as he feels the warm pure light of Abadar. He smiles up at the priest of his order, "Thank you, friend Veronnax," glancing down at his less mangled leg near the water.

Paizo Employee (Assistant Software Developer)

Alright, the dice have not been smiling. Both you and Lamm gain one HP each.

As Taemin pulls away, Gobblegut flails about, switching targets. His attacks, however, fail to find any purchase against Karista's dexterity. Karista, in her turn, strikes Lamm down as he begins to rise again. He's still not dead, back to dying, but ouch.

Haedrik is up. Map updated.

Thanks for holding up for me guys. I just finished a 500 mile move yesterday, and am ready to play. I will read the posts and post my own in the next 20 minutes.

Haedrik flinches as Karista hammers a vicious blow into the old man. He looks at Karista with a witty barb half-formed, but lets the matter die as he sees the wildness in her demeanor. He takes a step back and whispers to Verronax as he cuts in front of him, "I'd rather take my chances with the rabid gator." 1d20+5=23 (Roll #2668)Crit! Confirmation 1d20+5=18 (#2669). Damage is 4d6+4= 18 points of damage

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

Not sure if Taemin is up this round, so I'll go ahead and post Verronax's action.

Verronax leans over to get a clear shot around Haedrik, and whispering a prayer to Abadar, looses a crossbow bolt at the gator.

Attack roll (point blank, precise shot, divine favor) (1d20+4=22); Damage (1d8+2=5)
Almost had a crit...

Taemin takes extreme care in standing and stepping back from the edge of the water, and out of Karista's way.

Full round defensive withdraw. Probably away at Convention for rest of the weekend.

With Lamm down, the fight rapidly turns against the alligator. Haedrik turns to face Gobblegut, slashing the beast along its flank with his rapier as it flails for purchase on the wooden floor. Verronax fires over Haedriks shoulders, Abadar's wisdom guiding the bolt to lodge itself into Gobblegut's leg. Taemin backs away from the beast, carefully evading the snapping jaws. The sudden influx of pain seems to have more fully enraged the gator: while his thrashing and snapping becomes more violent, it has also become more pronounced and exagerrated, making him easier to dodge.

As Taemin and Gobblegut's blood mingles in the water, another dark shape slides under the divider. It is a mottled shark.
Taemin, Haedrik, Verronax

Spoiler:
You Kovosa natives (or near natives) recognize the shark as a Jigsaw shark, so named for the pattern on its hide. They live in both fresh and salt water, so they are very common in the rivers in and around Korvosa.

Karista is up again.

(F Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 1)

Karista wheels about, her teeth clenched in a grim parody of a grin. Her blade swings a long arc down towards the gator with a piercing whistle, and she drops to one knee to better her angle. She follows up with a short chop aimed at the back of the gator's skull.

Still raging, two swings with power attack. Hopefully gonna make a mess. Karista is unaware of the shark.

I rolled a 5+5=10, a miss I imagine

Haedrik takes a futile stab at the still-raging beast. "Someone should just throw Lamm's body in the water, the old thing might be content with that."

Haedrik wrote:
"Someone should just throw Lamm's body in the water, the old thing might be content with that."

Nodding weakly, Taemin takes Lamm's limp body by the shoulders and pushes it into over the edge and into the water with a shove. "So it is judged."

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

Hoping these won't become famous last words, Verronax says, "Well, unlike the alligator, at least sharks can't come up out of the water."

He reloads his crossbow and takes aim at the thrashing alligator.

Attack (1d20+3=22); Damage (1d8+1=8)
Critical confirm (1d20+3=17); Damage (1d8+1=4)
Hope that was enough!

The alligator eventually stops thrashing under a bombardment of singing steel and flying bolts. Taemin hefts Lamm into the water: something of a groan escapes Lamm's lips as he is lifted and the air is forced from his lungs. This is of little matter, however, because a short time later he is floating face-down alongside the mangled remains of the gator. The shark fastens itself to the gator, thrashing side to side to tear pieces of the beast away.
As long as you stay out of the water, you're safe from the shark, aside from the occasional splash of bloody water. Unless you want to kill the shark (or try to go through Lamm's pockets or something), we can consider combat over.

Haedrik watches the grim spectacle with a slight grin. "Admit it. That was satisfying."

"So what's say we loot this shack?"

(Male Elf Diviner 1)

"Stay here," Taras admonishes the children, putting a comforting hand on the older boy's shoulder for a moment. He then crosses the road back toward the fishery, hearing the muffled clunks and shouts of combat. As he approaches the fishery, tilts his head curiously at the splashing and squats to see the alligator thrashing around and snapping at things up inside the structure.

With little else to do but watch with hopeful worry, Taras powerlessly sat down and waited.

...Soon enough, the obese corpse of old Lamm tumbled out into the water below, setting off the frenzy of the shark haunting the water.

"Taemin!" Taras calls, hoping the sound will travel easily over the water and under the fishery. "Verronax! Haedrik! Find the other children and get out here!"

Taras worriedly looks over his shoulder at the huddled cluster of orphans and the bleak, false-sunset glow on the horizon. The alarm bells clang on from the castle.

"Hurry!"

Taemin nods in agreement at Haedrik and clasps his hands together, beginning minor chants to calm his nerves, edging around the walkway to open the door in the northeast corner.
"So you'll check his rags Haedrik? He may have kept keys. We are still looking for an elven boy after all."

Perception (Listen) for Taras' calls [11,7] = (18)

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

Verronax lays his hand on Taemin's shoulder. "How badly are you hurt, comrade? I can pray for healing from Abadar, but it will take some time. Can you hold until we're in a safer place?"

It will take me 10 minutes to cast cure light wounds without preparation, but I'm willing to do it now if you need it.

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:

So long as the shark seems fully occupied, Haedrik will wrench Lamm out of the water, give him a quick search, and then kick him back in.

Verronax Therellion wrote:

Taemin smiles softly, "I can hold, the greatest wounds are beneath my skin, and now begin to heal." He glances around, then comments, "Haedrik, perhaps those rags?", pointing to Lamm's small habitat in the corner.

Reserve points will heal me full in 8 minutes.

(F Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 1)

Karista exhales a long breath and gives Lamm's floating body a good hard stare. She shakes herself from her reverie in a moment and her lip curls in distaste as her companions root through the wretch's belongings. Of course...if someone is going to benefit from the plunder - it might as well be her. She kisses the hilt of her falchion, and sheathes it, then begins idly toeing through Lamm's knick-knacks.

Haedrik, Lamm's clothes are filthy and ratty (and of course, now waterlogged). He coughs weakly when you haul him out of the water. His pockets contain nothing but a keyring. Of course, that's something in itself. A fine, sharp dagger is tucked into a sheath on his belt, as is a smaller leather sheath containing nine small crossbow bolts.

Karista, the junk scattered about Lamm's floor is mostly worthless. Some of it might be worth something secondhand, but likely not as more than scrap. His hand crossbow lies where he fell, however.

Now that things have calmed down somewhat, and you have time to look around, you notice that there are two sets of rusty manacles chained to the ceiling, over the water. The chain for both sets is strung over to Lamm's junkpile, implying that the manacles can be raised and lowered.

In addition to the door to the east (through which you entered), there is a door to the north.

Loot found here (condensed):
Hand Crossbow
9 hand crossbow bolts
Keyring
Dagger

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

If no one objects, Verronax will claim the hand crossbow and bolts.

"We still need to deal with him," Verronax says, gesturing to Lamm's body. "I doubt the Korvosan Guard will be of use - they've been less than helpful with my inquiries thus far. And now that I'm here, I find myself wanting to be judge, jury, and executioner less and less. At least until he's had time to answer some questions."

Verronax goes over to the chains and brings the manacles closer. "Perhaps we can put him here for now, while we find this elven boy and any others held here against their will."

Haedrik will pick up the dagger turning the blade over in his hand. He tucks it into his belt next to the gnomes small kukri. "I am gonna add this one to the collection. Perhaps we should heed Taras, sounds like trouble out there."

Haedrik nods in agreement with V's suggestion to tie up Lamm.

Taemin opens the door to the north and investigates.

Taemin:

Spoiler:
This foul-smelling room seems to be a combination bedroom and study. A wooden bed with a lumpy mattress stands against the east wall, while a round table heaped with dirty plates, bread crusts, stained goblets, fruit rinds, and scuttling cockroaches sits nearby. At the foot of the bed sits a large strongbox, a slighty rusted lock securing its lid. A sagging dresser filled with moth-eaten clothes well past their glory days is in one corner—what appears to be a wooden hatbox surrounded by a small cloud of flies sits atop this dresser. Atop the footlocker sits a lovely (if obscene) statuette of a succubus entwined with some sort of feminine angel. The angel is carved of ivory, and the succubus of ebony or another dark wood.

By letting the chains all the way out, you are able to chain up Lamm without dangling him out over the water. You note that one of the sets of manacles is corrently sized for an adult human: this is the one you use on Lamm. The other is smaller, as if sized for a halfling. Or a child.

Just a reminder, Lamm is dying, and honestly you're lucky he's made his fort saves thus far. If you're wanting to interrogate him, act quickly.

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

Verronax whispers a small prayer to Abadar to close Lamm's wounds.

"We're coming back for you," he growls between clenched teeth.

"Or maybe not."

Cast stabilize.

Taemin drags a strongbox out of the room and leaves it for the others.

With a deep breath, he returns to the room to make a brief but thorough search for anything important, flipping the bed, and carefully opening the hat box. If nothing else important is found, he will return with the statue and press it into Haedrik's hands without comment.

Taking about a minute, I'll spend a round taking 10 (17 total) searching each section of the room.

Taemin:

Spoiler:
Flipping the bed reveals a chamberpot that has not been emptied in far too long, and forces a number of bedbugs to scuttle out of the matress. The hatbox, however, contains something far more gruesome: A severed head, coated in poorly applied makeup. It doesn't take you long to realize that it's Zellara's head. Examining more closely, it becomes clear that it has been dead for several weeks. Under the head is a small wooden box.

Haedrik, you find one of the keys on Lamm's keyring fits the manacles, and you use it to lock his wrists in. As Verronax applies Abadar's magic to the wretch, he exhales softly, relieved of a good deal of pain. However, he is still unconcious.

Ross:

Spoiler:
Extract the box and open it carefully. If it contains Harrow cards, tuck it away for now.

Taemin returns from the room with a small hat box, buzzing with flies. "We have been setup," he says simply. Tilting the box slightly he shows the long-dead face of Zellara within, before dropping the box.

"Indeed we should heed Taras and be quick in our remaining search." He hefts the strongbox to his shoulders and makes his way around to the door and out to the trapdoor. He waits for another take the chest before climbing up the side and returning to the inside to assist the others up.

Taemin:

Spoiler:
Taemin wrote:

It does. They appear to be identical to the ones used by Zellara in her reading.

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:

"He kept her head?" Verronax looks again at Lamm, his face a grimace of disgust. "What kind of monster is he? And who was Zellara, then?"

Verronax picks up the dropped box and puts it in a sack. "She deserves a proper burial, at least."

"Taemin, any sign of any more children? What's back there?"

Verronax Therellion wrote:
"Taemin, any sign of any more children? What's back there?"

"Simply Lamm's vermin infested bedroom. No signs of children, thankfully, and no doors," he grunts as he carries out the strongbox.

(F Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 1)

"It doesn't matter what kind of monster he is - he is one and deserves death." Karista lies a hand on her blade. "I won't allow the chance of someone coming here and pulling him down. I have no desire to go through all this again. Let it end tonight."

Unless anyone has something super compelling to say, Karista is going to run him through.

(Male Elf Diviner 1)

Taras nervously crosses the road again, lifting the wide sleeves of his robes and folding them up, buttoning top to bottom and making them less cumbersome in case of a need for quick movement. As he approaches the gaggle of children, he smiles reassuringly, gently ruffling hair here and there as he rejoins them.

As he stands in the middle of this crowd of children, he keeps keen eyes on the street, cautious still. This is a neighborhood that supported (or at least tolerated) the likes of Lamm, after all, and the children aren't safe until they're with their families again...

Unconsciously, Taras reaches into his shirt and lifts the small, purple glass butterfly pendant into view, idly toying with it in his fingers. He looks, in his robes and finely kept hair and fey, aristocratic features, like nothing less than a schoolmaster, with a patch of scandalously unkempt students surrounding him.

Ross:

Spoiler:
I figure it's only been a few minutes, but what's the scene on the street like? What's the general mood of the people? Are the bells still ringing? The guardsmen still reacting? Are there any guardsmen on the street that Taras can flag down to find out what's going on?

Haedrik puts his hands up to pause the multiple conversations, "Wait. She's dead then?" He is about to offer more, but sees Karista approaching Lamm with her blade.

"Karista, don't. Don't soil your blade with the blood of a man to whom death would be a favor."

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

"Should we search upstairs before we leave then? It seems everything down here is taken care of."

Gesturing towards Lamm, Verronax adds: "We'll leave him here for now, Karista. I'll come back for him once we're ready to leave."

Taemin waits for another briefly at the trapdoor, then sets down the strongbox and makes his way up the post carefully.

Haedrik nods along with Verronax. "Yes, but lets be quick about it." He glances at Taemin. "By the by, am I the only one here a bit offput by the head in the box? Hmm? Just trying to gauge the moral fiber of my new friends here." Haedrik arches an eyebrow along with his only half-mocking query.

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

"No, Haedrik, you are indeed not the only one. And as I said, I intend to give her - what's left of her, at any rate - a proper burial. Perhaps he is just a monster, truly beyond redemption. And even if he were to provide an explanation, it wouldn't bring Jacaranda back."

Verronax seems to almost be talking to himself. He pauses in thought for a moment. A shadow passes over his face, and his eyes and features harden.

"No. Karista is right. He brings nothing to the world. He is an enemy of humanity and civilization. He takes what he wants, and prospers on the backs of others, killing those who stand in his way. His guilt is clear, as is the Law, even if the Guard has chosen not to enforce it."

Verronax strides purposefully back to the chains and lowers Lamm to the floor. Standing behind him, Verronax unlimbers his crossbow and loads a bolt, his movements slow and ritualized. His eyes close and his lips move as he whispers a prayer to Abadar. Verronax opens his eyes and levels his crossbow at Lamm.

"Gaedren Lamm, you are guilty of horrendous crimes against the people and laws of Korvosa. You are a liar, a thief, a slaver, and a murderer. Your presence on the earthly plane shall be suffered no more. Your life is no longer your own. I proclaim you irredeemable. May your soul go to its just reward."

"So it is judged."

Barring any interruptions, Verronax will execute Lamm.

Haedrik doesn't interrupt, but he doesn't watch either. After he heres teh click of the crossbow bolt, he says, "Let's go upstairs now and give a quick run through of this shack."

Coup-de-grace to the face. Lamm is dead. I'm going to presume that Karista helped kill him in some manner, because, well, I'm not getting between her and her vengence.

Oh, and Haedrik did receive that lovely statue from Taemin. In case you didn't read how it was described:

DM Ross wrote:

The shark, apparently saited on gator meat, has resubmerged, and while still swimming, is doing so much more lazily.

Taemin:

Spoiler:
As the bolt passes through Lamm's braincase, a profound sense of relief sweeps through you.

Taras:

Spoiler:
There are not any pedestrians out on the street, save yourself and the children. However, move and more heads are popping out of windows to peek and figure out the commotion. You begin to hear a herald's voice cut through the din. At first you cannot tell what he is calling, but it becomes clear: "The King is Dead! Long live the Queen!" From the din, you can pick out a few particularly loud replies: "Hang the Queen!" and the even less polite "Kill the usurper whore!"

"Karista, my dear, you mind leading the way up. I feel safer behind you; I am sure you understand." Haedrik smiles politely.

He also finally seems to notice the statuette pressed into his palm, he studies it and then slips it into his pack. "Reminds me of the Queen," he says just loud enough to be heard.

Taemin on the upper floor beside the trapdoor, arm extended to help the others up. A big smile fills his face, and he hops lightly from one leg to the other, eager to move on.

(F Human (Shoanti) Barbarian 1)

Karista whispers softly to herself in Shoanti as she grimly stares while Verronax executes Lamm. Gaedren's chest falls for the final time and Karista seems less harsh, almost contemplative for a moment...at least until she spits on his inert body. She turns to follow Taemin out, "Let's leave this rubbish heap."

Taemin waits for Karista to get on the boat beneath, then reaches down and helps her (i.e. provides minor assistance) pull herself up through the trapdoor.

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

Verronax hands his halberd up to Taemin and follows it upstairs.

"A quick run-through of the ground floor before leave then?"

Taemin helps everyone else back up through the trapdoor, and help heft Lamm's footlocker upstairs. With Haedrik still carrying the light, you are able to make a quick search of the rooms you have already explored. Map of upper level..
You find relatively little of value. In the room with the trapdoor, there are a number of small hammocks hung under the walkways. At a rough guess, there is one ratty hammock for each child. There are also a number of empty barrels and crates, painted with a fish symbol. The collossal vat that dominates the room is mostly empty, though the bottom is coated in a fishy, acrid residue. If you touch the goo lining the tank, it tingles lightly on the skin.

Searching the bodies yields a number of items. The acid thowing man still clutches a polished wooden wand in his hand. Three glass jars are thrust through leather bands on his belt. Next to them are tied two squishy, thin cloth pouches, and a stone marked with alchemical runes. He carries two keys, and a slightly rusted dagger. He is dressed in leather armor. A crude stamp on the armor reveals his name: Yargin Balko.
Haedrik

Spoiler:
Haedrik, you recognize the face now that its paired with the name. He's Lamm's right hand man: His advisor, accountant, and fence. They'd only barely started working together when you escaped Lamm. You recall he was fascinated by alchemy, particularly acid and its effects.

The half-orc possesses an iron flail and a small iron shield, and was dressed in leather armor.
The dog is still sleeping the sleep of the violently knocked out.

In the office, the desk is covered in slates, messily covered in accounting notes. The cabinet, unlocked with one of Yargin's keys, is filled with similar notes, only on parchment. Judging by the dates, the slates are transferred to scrolls every two weeks or so.

Summary:
3 vials of acid
2 tanglefoot bags
1 thunderstone
1 wand of acid splash
Medium Leather Armor
Dagger
Medium Studded Leather Armor
Flail
Small Steel Shield
Yargin's Keys

The dark rooms and the rooms shown as only partially visible have not yet been explored.

Disliking the one on one aspect of any fight from the stairs, Taemin suggests the group make their way through from the open door in the office, where they first entered.

"Hopefully we will not find further minions of Lamm, but best to find them on equal footing should we do."

Taemin will heft anything found that others don't want to have on hand now up to a set of armor - and will secure the wand for Taras assuming no objections. Discussion Thread for divvying plans?

Paizo Employee (Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 2)

Verronax takes a look through the papers and slates to see just what sort of business Lamm was running here.
Ross, feel free to use any of my knowledge skills, if needed. Also, if there's not enough time to look through them now, I'll take a pile of the parchment to peruse layer.

"I agree," Verronax concurs with Taemin, after going through some of the items. Reloading his crossbow, he heads towards the western door.

I've stated my divvying preferences on the discussion thread.
